Gaining confidence is something I've spent a lot of time on the last few years.. I think you just have to force yourself to interact with people.
An exercise that helped me: go to a shopping mall and force yourself to talk to 20 people(especially opposite sex). You'll find that many people are actually quite friendly, and if you have negative interactions.. well why do you care about those people?

Most people read off from your body language than what you say. You can blabble all you want about yourself, but if it doesn't match your body language, people won't buy it.
It's a sad thing because parents are the ones that are supposed to teach these things and many parents do not. My parents never taught me anything about life lessons and society. I had to learn everything from trial and error, not the best way to learn it.
