The Japs attacked the British Colony of Hong Kong the next day in a massive battle that lasted 2 weeks. There had been a significant military buildup for months so why the Americans were taken by surprise who knows?

BTW it was Britain that had far more extensive territories in the Pacific when the War began, not the US and we wouldn't have let them have any, at any cost.
