Creativity is the defining quality of humanity. Jazz and the blues were born in Africa. They flourished in America and Europe only because of technology. But when the transplanted musical forms were brought back to Africa, they were given new life. Many of the contemporary African blues artists hold their own or surpass even the greatest of American or European artists.
Geography and the inability to trade ideas with other cultures, not a lack of sophistication, is what limited Africa.
Jazz, Salsa and Reggae they are all from West Africa guys. NO wonder Hancock and the rest had to visit West Africa. If you want to improvize, don't look down at the musicians of West African oringin or Africa in general. YOu'll just have to ask the cubans and the brazilians on that if not Hancock and the rest.
if you didnt know Jazz originated in america, now Latin music has had a huge influence on jazz music, but this style was drawn from american culture, just a heads up.
@LOCCH8901 Well... yep & nop. Jazz originated from America, from black people... guess where their forebears came from? American Culture is a wonderful meltingpot of European and African influx... that makes it so rich!
@samopdrift Pretty much so, but the "blacks' that so greatly influenced jazz music were slave for the greater amount of there life, most were born in America, so even though there backrounds were European and African, there souls were purley American: hey dont listen to me though, im just a 14 year old kid XD
@pillaisachin hmm.. actually i wasn't talking about blues, i was talking about jazz in general: be-bop, swing, ect. plus i dont have anything against anyone, but i can tell that you have strong racist judgments about people you dont know. i hope for your sake you can realize that everyone is equal.
@LOCCH8901 please child! read your earlier statement. Don't try to self righteously correct yourself now that you've been told. I'm not racist honestly, I just cant stand yanks who try to take credit for anything and everything under the sun.
@pillaisachin look, im not taking credit for anything! i was not around to do any of these things, so how can i say i did any of these things. all im trying to say is that a lot of jazz forms originated in america, regardless of race, or steryotype, or origin, it blossomed in america. and i cant self righteously correct myself because i believe all ive said is how anyone can make beutiful music, regardless of race, its somethiing that grows in the soul.
correction; jazz actually blossomed in western europe, before the wave came back to america.... miles; dexter gordon; and so many of them had to travel to europe, bluid a fan base there before they were even taken seriously here in America.
I do agree with you in the bases that most the jazz from in not all of them were created in America....
@LOCCH8901 Your wrong! Black people created Jazz and the Jazz musicians were not slaves. Black people in America are not American, they have never been treated like Americans nor seen as real Americans so white people can't claim Jazz, Blues, Rock 'n Roll, Bi bop, Hip Hop, Rap nor R&B music. The souls of Black people are pure Godly in nature and if white people leave us alone we will create a whole new reality in this world because we are the Original people of the planet earth.
@ShabazzAllah1 first off, i would like you to try and tell Barack Obama that he is not american, second of all, it doesnt matter if your black or white, we are all the same, no matter what you say, we all have equal oppurtunities to do great things with our lives, third and lastley, music comes from the soul, anyone can create music, so how dare you say that only a select few of us can make music becuase there skin is a diffrent color
@LOCCH8901 i'm sorry, music made by africans is way more sincere as are their people, as the white race has basically got a history of enslaving the rest of the world, and appointing themselves overlords. And now that imperialism is called imperialism, they tend to use things like terrorism to make excuses for sitting their asses down where theyre honestly not wanted. And if youre gonna bring up the taliban justice argument, remember it was the yanks that empowered them in the first place.
@pillaisachin im also sorry that my ancestors were idiots and couldn't coexist with the rest of the world becuase they were stubborn morons and couldn't respect other people. I have the belief that even though people may have cultural diffrences, that we should all recognise that everyone has the chance to be sucessful and anyone can make music, art, and anything else that comes from the soul
It is the same half of a pumpkin (?) the Kora body is made of. I don't know the name, but I know this instrument is sometimes played as a "water drum"; floating in water. As a water drum the sound is impressive deep! Here it is played with a microphone underneath I think.
The calabash like drum is often placed in a plastic trashcan or something like that to give the drum a nice deep bass sound.I guess they use ducktape to keep the drum on it's place.
saw them at docs du sud (marseille) a really responsive crowd - brilliant stuff - just another case of styles that have been semi-digested by the west returning to their roots - Ali FT would be proud.
that's a ridiculous statement to make about music. I understand that you are espousing strong sentiments regarding the beautiful music of Africa. I share those those strong feelings and find African music deeply spiritual and beautiful. However, I think to say "Africa is the richest continent" in regards to music is way off. How exactly are you defining rich?
This is awesome
