Funny how exactly the same airline stuff is still going on today and still not really resolved today. But if passengers then knew that in 2011 they would not be able to take their own scissors or bottled water onto a plane and that they would get their balls fondled before getting on, they'd be shocked. Same as we'd be shocked now if someone told us we'd be going through metal detectors to go on trains in 5 years from now - but the way things are going, don't be surprised.
@michtyme3 I heard the awful news re Death of Elvis...on Tuesday 16 Aug 1977.The News at Ten was just about over when news reader Reginald Bosanquet read the "NewsFlash" " Unconfirmed reports are coming in from Memphis Tennessee that Elvis Presley has died".
@michtyme3 I remember I first heard the announcement on News at Ten, it was Sandy Gall, we just got back from holiday in Bournemouth, Im sure it was News at Ten.
I remember it exactly as I was working in my first job on British Railways in 1979. When I got home there was a screen up on ITV saying We're sorry we can't bring you any programmes at the moment, we will give you more information when we can.
This meant "Ludvig The Egg" or Rhubabrb & Custard had just finished!!!, & your parents saying "Shut Up" I'm trying to listen to the news", History repeating itself, "But your not watching Spongebob I want to watch the news!!!"
@crusher19860138 Good post. My Dad used to get home at about 7.30 in 1972 and on a Thursday he always had a big bag of sweets for us kids as it was payday.
I love 1970s British TV, It's so much interesting than the USA telly of today. Fox News has no idea of how to do charming graphics like BBC or ITV. Don't you hate the annoying 3D animation TV promos use now? It's distracting and ugly IMHO.
Yes of course - this was the first program after that blasted ITV strike.
RIP Leonard Parkin. The news at 5:45 basically signalled the end of children's programme's - including John Craven's Newsround on BBC1 - and the start of "serious news."
I remember the ITV strike. The screen just had a message on it for weeks saying about industrial action. I was 9. Then, when ITV returned, there were little promos with voices singing "welcome back to ITV!". Unfortunately Crossroads hadn't improved.
Fantastic picture! I remember coming home in the evening, switching on the TV, and seeing a slide which said something like "Due to industrial action by technicians, blah blah no telly on ITV tonight mate." And it went on for months too!! Hard to believe it happening now...Well, it wouldn't.
THANK GOD FOR YOU TUBE

I know what you mean. They get C list celebs to watch the clip first, then pretend that they can 'remember' obscure details about the clip, which makes it look like they have 20 year memories.
Made me laugh, when I saw a 20 something year old singer talking about something from the early '80s. I thought to meself: "Hang on! You weren't even born in 1982 as yet. So obviously faked. (It may have been Rachel Stevens) Ugh!!
The picture quality's very impressive. This is how ITV news should be done, instead of focussing on D-list celebrities and banging on and on about the royals.
Sir freddie was 25 years ahead of his time trying to introduce cheap flights, only to be forced into bankruptsie by the likes of Britishairways and other majour airlines who wanted us all to pay through the nose for air travel...
good to see this again. this was just after the 1979 ITV strike. ITV news today is just horrible. too tabloid and to americanised. just like television overall today, it treats its audience as though it has a learning difficulty. cheers.
Well Funny Love nastalgia ! ,I remember this News reader and the theme music , not seen this for nearly 30 Yrs years. And seeing this again triggers other things in my memory from this time, when i was a kid
it shows that a whole generation has been influenced by TV , you cannot escape it !
Totally agree. If only ITV brought back everything from those days! What I remember from 1987 - 1992 was brilliant (I wasn't born until 1985 so I missed out on a lot of greatness sadly)
ITV was great in 1985 certainly and it was up until the 1990 Broadcasting Act eventually turning it into the equivalent of hospital food - bland and tasteless. The one hideous factor about 1985 was having Maggie Bloody Thatcher as PM and the other was Dire Straits. Mike S.
From what I read somewhere that Thames TV did the 1st link from London for the whole ITV Network after the strike, The Thames Clock was altered to show ITV at the top. The announcer is Peter Marshall.
After watching the 2nd part it looks likes Thames TV must have done the announcement for the rest of the week, i wonder if LWT were used over the weekend?.
Is that reporter wearing make-up? The one in the red tie?

It was from Leonard Parkin that I discovered that ... Summerland had burned down in the Isle of Man - killing many,
I was about 1974 and we'd just returned from holiday having been in there daily as kids.
