@balearicsoundwave89 I don't try to be witty, I'm making the point. A point you would never be able to even see or consider as you're views are too narrow minded. Tory's arn't the only ones to blame. The working class has never been fine under a Tory, You only have to see what they are doing now. Every time they ruin lives of hard working people Thatcher crushed mineing communities , sold everything she could .A tory would have us back tomorrow liveing with no NHS low pay and conditions and very little education and still steal from us to pay for tory selfish greed.
@escortmk112 That's just what the Tory party was created for, to -protect the idle rich from the workers, it was a created from and for the landed gentry, the factory and mill owners and the aristocracy of the old "Unionist" party in response to the formation of our unions and our gradual political awakening. The dressing might have changed but it's still the same turd underneath.
Every social change for the better, from voting for everyone to the NHS, there've been the Tory party, opposing it.
@escortmk112 and both times we have been pushed into a terible economic situation by labour and the torys have had to pull us out of it, after thatcher we were back on the road to sucsess untill blair and brown decided to borrow more than we can pay back and give all our money to scum bags who want to sit on there arses at home, and she had to close the pits because mineing was extinct, I am one of the very few who still has a coal fire but the demand is not there so why have these pits open
@MrKarldoran Educated guess you were nothing more than a sperm cell when the most evil PM the uk has had was in power. NHS run down, schools run down, miners strike which that cow engineered, and lets not forget the poll tax. A tory is a greedy selfish capitalist party funded by the rich for the rich at the expence of the working class. Thatcher was then and now hated by the working class and destroyed this country to the extent we are still paying the price for a dictator of a pm.

@TheFidd77 You sir are no more than a sperm cell with the grey matter of a plank to say such a thing. Hope you and yours suffer under the Tory of today
@TheFidd77 It is easiest to explain by just saying what other parties did not do, run down NHS, take away a working mans only way to fight for decent pay ect, bring mass unemployment then patronize us by saying TORY selfish greedy policies are for the good of all take from the elderly let school buildings go to rack and ruin , i could go on all day but to say a TORY will take slash cut and undo most anything our parants fought for and got just about sums them up. Tory giving us well ?
@TheFidd77 I would like to say i found NEW labour under that greedy liar blair an absolute disgrace but it was a fact that anyone who never made money through a ten year period before the last election would never make any . The wars ect and now seeing the life that blair lives should make every old labour voter sick . The answer to this problem i am at a loss but the Tory ideology is a no no.
@TheFidd77 Well the Tories opposed votes for women, and even for men who didn't own land. They opposed the NHS, social security, affordable housing, free education, better working conditions in mills and mines, the 40 hour week, paid holidays and sick pay, legal aid, God, when I think of what we used to have before Thatcher got in, we could be here all day.
The Conservatives opposed all the above and more, just to keep the workers in our place to make them and their own class richer.
Back in the day yes - maybe look up some up to date policies? Labour when created, was needed. Conditions were poor for workers, change needed to happen. However, in their more recent history, haven’t really proven any better in their honesty, spending, social policies or even half as reliable to better people or govern. Labour continued with countless torie policies throughout their time - and ballsed up a lot more. I vote green myself - but comments with no substance irritate me

@baxterbasics They were a minority elected govrnment, and as for dimgwalltameiben, why bring crass materialism into the equatin? You really do sound like a prat when you seem to hold a couple as the high alter of life as opposed to values. Pathetic.
The decline of Unions has seen accomplishment and the importanceof doing a task well fall by the wayside in favour of vested intrests. However why let reason into the argument when there is the good old Brown Shirted Daily Mail to follow.
@baxterbasics MMmm I notice you omitted the adverb "democratically". Of course to use such a term would surely include the existence of a free press. If the press were truly free many of these news clips from the time would be markedly different. I believe this was proved in court a number years ago after the BBC took Channel 4 to court over a documentary which claimed that footage had been manipulated to portray the miners as instigators. The BBC lost.
what was the real reason the thatcher miners strike happened and did it have to happen and did other countries like france and germany have 2 go through this i bet they didnt and did the miners strike make any difference to how the united kingdom has turned out today
maggies boot boys in action. This whole episode in time done the police no favours. Robo cops without doing there masters bidding, Oh yer and claiming S*it loads of over time while stamping on the people who pay there overtime. Made me loose a lot of respect for police. Im sure if they were given guns they would have opened fire if ordered (Army ants with there brains cut out)
@gopconservative78 fighting for your rights as a worker, for better earnings and work condiotions is truly a crime. well, i am, in fact, a communist, and after the revolution, scumbags like you can chose between a year in the mines and a bullet in the head, harharhar:D
im a labour man. great deal of respect for the miners and their cause. great hatred for the tories, but ultimately, British industry was doomed. Thatcher just dismantled it too fast
Yay Unions! Go them! Just like in Greece, where their Unions' actions will protect their workers from all harm and in no way destroy the economy of their country and half of Europe! :-D
Seems absolutely ridiculous that David Cameron is now banging on about rebuilding British manufacturing and industry when the Tories spent a large part of the eighties trampling all over it.
Yeah true. I don't think they robbed anyone of electricity anyway becuase they started using other ways to get electricity and started closing most of the mines down.
To be fair Labour done a better job of tearing apart British mining then the Tories ever done, as more mines were such down under Callahan or Willison then under Thatcher.
When Unions were first setup they done a lot of good work and protected people form bosses who abused it's workers. Sadly by the 70's & 80's this situation had gone full circle and it was the unions that were abusing their power.
@R0undAboutMidnight 'British Industry' was an inefficient and uncompetitive mess, which badly needed opening up to the free market and competition to make it viable. The Unions, as they are now, were short sighted and narrow minded, and refused to accept the victorian working practices British Industry still operated under were simply not viable in the global market economy. Unions never see the big picture, only their own narrow agenda. This is why they lose.
@edj66 Yeah sure. The unions were narrow minded to try to protect British jobs. They should have just allowed their members to be sacked so some poor Chinese bastard could dig for coal for less than a dollar a day so more profit could be increased.
@R0undAboutMidnight ..........no doubt spoken by a man who's never holidayed abroad, driven a foreign car, bought a Tshirt & pair of jeans for less than a tenner, taiwanese lap top etc etc
@R0undAboutMidnight No, the unions were about economic disruption at the behest of the politburo in Moscow. Thankfully Margaret Thatchcher has the balls to crush these maggots and the flying picket scumbags that helped to cause disruption.
I wouldn't want a bunch of commies deciding whether or not I have any electricity...
@kewlfonz Don't talk shit that's all bollocks. All tabloid lies. Anway, I'd rather have money from anywhere other then dirty yankee money. Fuck the police.
@kewlfonz I wonder if you understand that 'Commies' as you call them would actually have more reliable energy supplies because they believe in equality, no the elevation of an unjustified elite?
if you mean violent attacks as people getting beaten up, then perhaps you're right (i don't know the stats), but as for mass killings, surprisngly we don't get those (maybe a couple in ireland or some makeshift guns, but nothing on the US scale)
and its agood thing that people with hunting rifles are monitored. period.
and i think you should trust your government a bit more. yes they have turned on their people in the past, but a working democracy with a working law court and effective policing doesn't need civilians to have guns, all that ever does is prevent a robbery every few years at the cost of several massacres
if a person want to kill a person, they shall do it
whether it be shotgun, knife, poison, beating, crowbar, scissors, paper cut, bare hands.
america fairs well enough, everyone using guns for sporting purposes, target practice in the lawn, and robbery rates there are around the same... a lot more school attacks and "almost" massacres in Britain. a lot more violence in schools in britain. a lot more drunken violence. a collection of bolts that happens to make a rounded thing go fast isnt to blame
now you're not making sense. it is infintely easier to kill someone with a gun than with anything else, hence murder rates going through the roof in many US cities. its not acceptable that civilians can buy assault rifles, they have no need for them.
& as for britain being more violent, you're wrong, the statistics show that the US has more violent murders (allbeit fewer burglaries), and there have been massacres in america every few years, we've had practically none in the last few decades.
i never said it wasnt easier to kill with a gun. my argument was that a person will kill another person regardless of how easy it is to do so.
assault rifles? no need, agreed, but hunting rifles? the cost is immense, the paperwork more so, and the constant checks terrible, as well as the fact that anyone committing a murder by gun in the surrounding hundred miles means that the police come running to your door.
i said "school attacks" there has been more violent attacks at british schools.
and hardly anyone, antime (in the UK) needs the firearm police, but when they do they are available with a shitload of backup, helis, special cameras etc. a little more effective than an untrained frightened, triggerhappy civvy with a revolver
maggie destroyed the social fabric of britain when she anlawfully turned the police and worst still, the secret services on her people, this was the year real justice died in britain. on a lighter note, the illness maggie has now is causing her to loose her marbles, shes going insane, how ironic is that.
hi i just read ur post that u made to someone else saying that reagan did not take ur guns away but if u want to look up ur history. reagan created the Presidential directive "REX 84" and one of the orders within that horrid document state that if martial law is declared in america the american consitution is taken out of political power i.e put on hold so that would also include the right to bear arms. u can go look that up amaerica are no more free than britain is now. btw im open to debate
aye, but Reagan failed, you still have your arms. i could go to jail for 4 years for having a pen knife. i could go to jail for 6-8 for having ANY other type of knife, because almost every type of knife is illegal in britain. police dont even get guns! only drug dealers have guns, and we live in fear and cannot protect ourselves from anything. America still has its guns and its freedom, and a drug dealer that has a gun is met with thousands of law abiding citizens who protect themselves well.
u misunderstood im british and i live in britain and i do agree with u in every way but when u say america have there freedom they dont they have a fail safe for public control i.e if the goverment wanted to do somthing the public dident want and the public started to riot in more than 3 states then martial law would be put into power then Reagan's "REX 84" would also be put in place which takes the rights of the public and put them on hold i.e the consitution they have the illusion of freedom.
ahh, i apologize, but a false sense of security and freedom is better than not having guns! the government plays more by the publics rules when they know they could cause VERY serious rioting i suppose though, more so than some british people with bricks, more easy to control. personally i would abide by any rule for guns. and america still has them, even if their right to bare arms is getting slowly diminished.
ever heard of firearms police? y'know, the guys who receive better training and have much faster response times because there's so little gun crime they're rarely tied up?
and the penknife stuff is BS, you can carry a knife in public if you have reason to; e.g.: scouts and penknives, chefs and kitchen knives, putchers and cleavers etc etc (its when a hoodie wonders around with a jagged dagger that people get shifty)
ahh, but who really has a valid reason to cary a pen knife? who is in scouts nowadays? tescos should really be banned, kitchen knives are twice as dangerous, and far easier to get hold of. i'd rather be up against a teen with a 3 inch flick blade than a teen with a butcher knife. ahhhh firearms police are good and all, but.... dont see many around when you need em do ya? a crime is a crime, most people dont commit it and stand there with the gun waiting for fire arms police to get there.
scouts have a valid reason, they're a useful tool. and kitchen knives are also useful. in short knives are tools with many uses, guns have only two (killing and recreation, and recreation can be kept in designated ranges where they can keep the guns)
aye, my point is....very few people are in scouts, and kitchen knives are only acceptable to carry if you are a chef, going to or from a workplace. though a pen knife may be used innocently enough, you have to prove you intended no harm with it, and that is a little hard. in the case of knives its guilty until you prove yourself innocent.
the sight of the revolver would be enough to reinforce social norms, people would see the possible consequences. no rash moves
i dunno. it works in America. i use shotguns and air rifles recreationally all the time. no freedom to the people you know. if the government one day decided "screw this, lets kill everyone and start again" there would be little effective resistance.
i use air rifles and occasionally a friend's dad's licensed bolt-action, but there's rigorous testing before you're allowed one, regular checks and there should be a reason for owning one (like woodland management or target practise, not defending yourself because you think the government's out to get you). in that sense its ok, but anything better than hunting rifles for anyone without good reason to have them (e.g.: in urban areas) is not on
@MWCRail Great deal of respect for the miners? What about the poor policeman who had to face a full wrath of an angry mob! you need to think differently.
why do you care about thatcher then harvey? what did she do for you? your a fucking prick, im 18 years old and i know more than you, you should be ashamed
id fucking giv myself cancer if i was called harvey, loooool harvey looool i bet you got some abuse at school. or did you go private?. fucking no good middleclass prick with nothing better to do than argue with a 18 year old on youtube.
Yes of course I went to a private school, though the correct term is actually public school - not that you would know that, you enemployable welfare addicted CUNT.
Nothing wrong with being middle class. Then again, I am from the North and hate Thatcher as much as the next guy (She is the reason half my mums side went unemployed and had to move south)
The BBC were exposed for reversing the coverage of the Battle of Orgreave. The violence was started by the police when the BBC presented it as the other way around. In times like this, the bourgeois stick together and the BBC, along with the rest of the media, went out on a limb to discredit the miners. It made me ashamed to be British to see our police officers attacking fellow citizens like that. BTW, the army were also involved in battery against the striking miners.
Like I say: retrain and relocate to find work, there's plenty out there IF you have the right attitude. Otherwise sit in your decaying towns living off welfare checks and STFU.
The more of these clips I see the more proud I feel of my working class roots. I often find it hard to understand how stupid most people on the right actually are, politics is about morality, I am yet to meet a conservative who can morally justify to me how oppression of working peoples and the poor is fair.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Plenty of jobs available, then as now. Just need to be willing to relocate. If you want a better paying/more exciting job then perhaps, just perhaps, some of you tonks should've studied harder at school/college and acquired skills RELEVANT to the 21st centuries. Stop your bloody whining and moaning and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for the failure you have made of your own lives.
ipi5hl I'm glad you posted this. A lot of Thatcher's supporters seem to think that it's oh-so-easy for people whose families for generations have worked in mining to start new jobs in retail or similar. In the North-East, whole towns were built near collieries. The Tories seem to think that mining is a footloose industry and forget that coal is located in certain areas. I've seen the scars for myself, when the mines closed the areas were finished, one such example is Easington. No mine, no town.
My dad was a miner during this strike, he stood out on the picket lines from beinging to end because it was something that he and many other men around the country believed in. I couldnt have done what they did back then and i couldnt have worked in a freezing cold pit all hours of the day and night... could you?! Think about that before you call them losers!!
We could power this country for 300 years with the coal that's left underground. And without pollution. Instead, because the Tories destroyed the mining industry, we have to buy electricity from France. There's some 21st Century relevance for you. You clearly don't know anything about what happened here, and what it was about.
The miners were greedy and arrogant. They tried to boss the country in 1972 and again in 1984. In 1984, they got their arses handed to them though! The Iron Lady had 'em for breakfast!
rentaghost it says your 21 from japan, what the hell do you know, if only you knew half of it, scargill was dead right, and weres maggies blacklegs who worked through the strike, all their pits are closed down to, whole communities ripped apart, law abiding people rightfully striking ,beaten and thrown in prison, criminalised,if the miners turned up with 2 by 4s and helmets, and really wanted a fight the,d have kicked the polices ass,s easy
maggie passed laws to stop flying pickets and to seize the unions money, the tories ripped the car,the steel, the shipbuilding ,the fishing and mining and manufacturing heart out of britain, and new labour has done nothing to change it either, less jobs, less apprenticeships and skilled trades, thats why theres a shortage today , shipbuilding thrives in france germany and italy ,the few left of ours are barely ticking over
It's a job - you wear the uniform, you earn the overtime, and no matter how much you sympathise with the strikers you shut up and obey orders.
Everyone concerned knew that there would be violence, that some folk on both sides wanted a fight, that the cops were better armed and organised, had the state behind them and were less nervous, but the miners were more motivated and unpredictable.
Most cops voted Tory in '79 and became cannon fodder.

Andy1ad 1 year ago 3
@baxterbasics MMmm I notice you omitted the adverb "democratically". Of course to use such a term would surely include the existence of a free press. If the press were truly free many of these news clips from the time would be markedly different. I believe this was proved in court a number years ago after the BBC took Channel 4 to court over a documentary which claimed that footage had been manipulated to portray the miners as instigators. The BBC lost.

Stupid trade unions!!! Forced everyone to strike. Destroyed British industry. Tried to rob people of electricity and heating.
cool80090 2 years ago
It was their electricity they were getting it out of the ground. So they can't rob what's their's
cook119 2 years ago
Yeah true. I don't think they robbed anyone of electricity anyway becuase they started using other ways to get electricity and started closing most of the mines down.
cool80090 2 years ago
I think all the trade unions did though was encourage the government to close them down quicker, making a lot of people jobless.

What are you on about? The unions were all about protecting British industry, while the tories were about ripping it apart.
R0undAboutMidnight 2 years ago 35
To be fair Labour done a better job of tearing apart British mining then the Tories ever done, as more mines were such down under Callahan or Willison then under Thatcher.
When Unions were first setup they done a lot of good work and protected people form bosses who abused it's workers. Sadly by the 70's & 80's this situation had gone full circle and it was the unions that were abusing their power.
Freddie1980 1 year ago
@R0undAboutMidnight 'British Industry' was an inefficient and uncompetitive mess, which badly needed opening up to the free market and competition to make it viable. The Unions, as they are now, were short sighted and narrow minded, and refused to accept the victorian working practices British Industry still operated under were simply not viable in the global market economy. Unions never see the big picture, only their own narrow agenda. This is why they lose.
edj66 1 year ago
@edj66 Yeah sure. The unions were narrow minded to try to protect British jobs. They should have just allowed their members to be sacked so some poor Chinese bastard could dig for coal for less than a dollar a day so more profit could be increased.

if you mean violent attacks as people getting beaten up, then perhaps you're right (i don't know the stats), but as for mass killings, surprisngly we don't get those (maybe a couple in ireland or some makeshift guns, but nothing on the US scale)
and its agood thing that people with hunting rifles are monitored. period.
Marnerbanana 2 years ago
and i think you should trust your government a bit more. yes they have turned on their people in the past, but a working democracy with a working law court and effective policing doesn't need civilians to have guns, all that ever does is prevent a robbery every few years at the cost of several massacres
Marnerbanana 2 years ago
if a person want to kill a person, they shall do it
whether it be shotgun, knife, poison, beating, crowbar, scissors, paper cut, bare hands.
america fairs well enough, everyone using guns for sporting purposes, target practice in the lawn, and robbery rates there are around the same... a lot more school attacks and "almost" massacres in Britain. a lot more violence in schools in britain. a lot more drunken violence. a collection of bolts that happens to make a rounded thing go fast isnt to blame
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
now you're not making sense. it is infintely easier to kill someone with a gun than with anything else, hence murder rates going through the roof in many US cities. its not acceptable that civilians can buy assault rifles, they have no need for them.
& as for britain being more violent, you're wrong, the statistics show that the US has more violent murders (allbeit fewer burglaries), and there have been massacres in america every few years, we've had practically none in the last few decades.
Marnerbanana 2 years ago
i never said it wasnt easier to kill with a gun. my argument was that a person will kill another person regardless of how easy it is to do so.
assault rifles? no need, agreed, but hunting rifles? the cost is immense, the paperwork more so, and the constant checks terrible, as well as the fact that anyone committing a murder by gun in the surrounding hundred miles means that the police come running to your door.
i said "school attacks" there has been more violent attacks at british schools.
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
and hardly anyone, antime (in the UK) needs the firearm police, but when they do they are available with a shitload of backup, helis, special cameras etc. a little more effective than an untrained frightened, triggerhappy civvy with a revolver

fudge1monkey 2 years ago
hi i just read ur post that u made to someone else saying that reagan did not take ur guns away but if u want to look up ur history. reagan created the Presidential directive "REX 84" and one of the orders within that horrid document state that if martial law is declared in america the american consitution is taken out of political power i.e put on hold so that would also include the right to bear arms. u can go look that up amaerica are no more free than britain is now. btw im open to debate
grant11102 2 years ago
aye, but Reagan failed, you still have your arms. i could go to jail for 4 years for having a pen knife. i could go to jail for 6-8 for having ANY other type of knife, because almost every type of knife is illegal in britain. police dont even get guns! only drug dealers have guns, and we live in fear and cannot protect ourselves from anything. America still has its guns and its freedom, and a drug dealer that has a gun is met with thousands of law abiding citizens who protect themselves well.
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
u misunderstood im british and i live in britain and i do agree with u in every way but when u say america have there freedom they dont they have a fail safe for public control i.e if the goverment wanted to do somthing the public dident want and the public started to riot in more than 3 states then martial law would be put into power then Reagan's "REX 84" would also be put in place which takes the rights of the public and put them on hold i.e the consitution they have the illusion of freedom.
grant11102 2 years ago
ahh, i apologize, but a false sense of security and freedom is better than not having guns! the government plays more by the publics rules when they know they could cause VERY serious rioting i suppose though, more so than some british people with bricks, more easy to control. personally i would abide by any rule for guns. and america still has them, even if their right to bare arms is getting slowly diminished.
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
ever heard of firearms police? y'know, the guys who receive better training and have much faster response times because there's so little gun crime they're rarely tied up?
and the penknife stuff is BS, you can carry a knife in public if you have reason to; e.g.: scouts and penknives, chefs and kitchen knives, putchers and cleavers etc etc (its when a hoodie wonders around with a jagged dagger that people get shifty)
Marnerbanana 2 years ago
ahh, but who really has a valid reason to cary a pen knife? who is in scouts nowadays? tescos should really be banned, kitchen knives are twice as dangerous, and far easier to get hold of. i'd rather be up against a teen with a 3 inch flick blade than a teen with a butcher knife. ahhhh firearms police are good and all, but.... dont see many around when you need em do ya? a crime is a crime, most people dont commit it and stand there with the gun waiting for fire arms police to get there.
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
scouts have a valid reason, they're a useful tool. and kitchen knives are also useful. in short knives are tools with many uses, guns have only two (killing and recreation, and recreation can be kept in designated ranges where they can keep the guns)
Marnerbanana 2 years ago
aye, my point is....very few people are in scouts, and kitchen knives are only acceptable to carry if you are a chef, going to or from a workplace. though a pen knife may be used innocently enough, you have to prove you intended no harm with it, and that is a little hard. in the case of knives its guilty until you prove yourself innocent.
the sight of the revolver would be enough to reinforce social norms, people would see the possible consequences. no rash moves
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
well the knife stuff is common sense. but civilians can't be trusted with guns.
Marnerbanana 2 years ago
i dunno. it works in America. i use shotguns and air rifles recreationally all the time. no freedom to the people you know. if the government one day decided "screw this, lets kill everyone and start again" there would be little effective resistance.
fudge1monkey 2 years ago
i use air rifles and occasionally a friend's dad's licensed bolt-action, but there's rigorous testing before you're allowed one, regular checks and there should be a reason for owning one (like woodland management or target practise, not defending yourself because you think the government's out to get you). in that sense its ok, but anything better than hunting rifles for anyone without good reason to have them (e.g.: in urban areas) is not on

It is not cost effective to import coal especially when you consider the fact that people lose jobs. But that doesn`t seem to bother you.
And who the fuck offered to retrain the miners? who was going to employ 45 year old ex miners?
ipi5hl 3 years ago 4
ipi5hl I'm glad you posted this. No mine, no town.
mofi500 3 years ago
I'm sure these miners would have loved the chance to retrain. Only maggie didn't think of that.

My old man was a cop during the miners' strike.
Most cops voted Tory in '79 and became cannon fodder.
groinhat 3 years ago
