JUST MADE IT... In 1966 "Sweet Talkin' Guy" peaked at No. 10 thus just making the Billboard's Top 10 and it spent a total of 10 weeks in the Top 100...
Played in the commercial discotheques but i absolutely love it!.......thanks for the post and it brings back memories of trying to hit it off with a nice lady on a Friday night.......and if i didnt.......there was always the Highland Room or Wigan on the Saturday night.....K.T.F.yeah and i do like rare stuff....its just i still think sounds like this are worth a spin Dave from York
wow, its incredible if you listen to the CHIFFONS singing this song when they were younger, then when they are older like on this album. of course the better electronics helped to, but i can hear the deeper, stronger sound they have on this album, compared to the one i just heard. GREAT JOB! thanks.
When I first heard this song on the jukebox at a cafeteria close to my high school, I broke down and cried. Had to run to the bathroom to hide from everybody. The song described in detail the sweet talkin' guy I was dating and gave me some good advice: "stay away from him...you'll never win." Of course I never followed the advice and my senior year turned into a huge tragedy. Still I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks Chiffons!
Prior to this, the Chiffons sued Laurie Records to get a release from their contract. They won in court, but the victory was a hollow one, as they had trouble finding a label that would take them. The bitter pill was they ended up back at Laurie, but they scored a big winner with this tune. By '66 the classic girl group sound was well on its way ou;, so for a non-Motown female group to go Top Ten, that was rare. This is a great tune!
I heard somewhere the '50s didn't really end until 1966. I wouldn't doubt it. 1966 was the last year for anything & everything that had to do with the 1950's. Sweet Talking Guy by the Chiffons was one of the last great songs that had a '50s feel and sound. Everything changed in 1967. The 50's era was over.
What a great record, right in the middle of the British Invasion the Chiffons bring out a super slick record like this, and the only other artists I know of who recorded on Dion's label Laurie.
This was really that last song by a non-Motown girl group to have become a big hit after 1965. After that, only the Motown girl groups (The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes) scored high on the charts until the 1970's.
While the rest of the world was getting caught up in Beatlemania and all the sounds from England The Chiffons were bringing out super slick songs like "He's so Fine" and this one a bit later on, also proving Laurie wasn't a onw artist label with Dion.
I used to dance to this in my pram it's stayed with me ever since a real message of love and gr8 expectations that get fked by real life
