  • I preferer more cantabile, but I think Wieniawski could love it.

  • Henryz's play is the best

  • She won heifetzs violin and she sucks at it

  • she should be looking at the audience at the end, not the stage - fast doesn't mean good, either

  • Too fast?? too slow??

Does a car meant to be driven fast or slow? There is no right answer, it depends on the person.

  • Obviously she plays really nice, but legendary pieces like this don't sound very well when they're modified in speed....

  • she's not crisp on the important notes

  • wow! i think she could have played a little slower, but it was very good! i am playing this right now, and i couldn't imagine playing it this fast.

  • don't like

  • that was great!!!!!! it looks like the whole thing was put on face forward. so fast!!!!

  • why does it take so long to load!!!

  • I'd rather hear it played slower, with precise intonation, no bow swells, and all the notes ( like Heifetz).

  • Beautiful (:

  • The part at 5:45 isn't actually all that difficult. Sad she missed it.

  • @halneufmille Don't be sad. Enjoy.

  • 技術・容姿・人間性すべてに満点。こんな上手い人はそういないだろう。

  • I really love her violin, but im really sorry cuz i feel more dazzled when Maxim Vengerov plays this same piece. I hope sometime i could head hillary hahn play this same piece~

  • @ravenfyhre

What is the point of comments like yours? Is it to just show how much you love and respect someone else? Maxim is amazing, (which is old news.) I will edit your comment for you.

"I really love her violin (playing)!" - Ravenfyhre

  • This is way too awesome @.@

  • It's bit fast, but AWESOME!

  • A bit fast for my taste but maybe I'm simply not used to this tempo. An excellent performance nonetheless.

  • This is fantastic. It's nice to see Heifetz's Dolphin Stradivarius is still being put to good use.

  • She plays toooooo fast!! I cant even heard each note clearly

  • that wz simply awsum!!!

  • 1:44

  • I love this violinist she's so good but what's with the 'epilectic' speed of the opening of the piece? I'm sure it must be just me but I found it way too fast, sorry.... great fantastic violinist though I can only but dream to be like her in another life time :) (and the ending too by the way ;) hehe)

  • I love this violinist she's so good but what's with the 'epilectic' speed of the opening of the piece? I'm sure it must be just me but I found it way too fast, sorry.... great fantastic violinist though I can only but dream to be like her in another life time :)

  • Woah... This makes me smile uncontrollably and not know what to do with myself. Whoever said the Japanese have no souls.

  • WITH BORIS!!! DANG

    amazing combination

  • Brilliant!

  • this gave me goosebumps. (in a good way)

  • more than 1 minute of aplauses.Wow!

  • Is that the Stradivarius?

She is an incredible violinist but I do not believe she is worthy to play Heifetz's second favorite violin.

  • @wowdanalise i don't think that anybody is worthy to even play HEIFETZ'S 2nd favorite violin...lol

  • @BBRENTTAGHAPP

True, I believe that Heifetz has no living equal. About the violinists of the past, I cannot say.

Even so, I would think that the violin would want to be played, even if not by its master.

  • @wowdanalise do you know how she got it?

  • @sijas

I cant say I do. Enlighten me.

  • @wowdanalise oh i have no idea lol.... i wanted to know =)

  • @sijas she explained it in another youtube video:"Akiko Suwanai at BBC Proms 2009 (5/5) "

  • that's what you call a lot of claps, I thought it was a recording!!

  • 4 minutes of clapping -.-

  • It's good! clear sound.

  • Y el premio a la velocidad y mejor Micro Estacatto es Para..... Akiko!, (aplausos) XD

  • Sounds so unnatural - extremely fast and then those chords suddenly too slow ... I don t like it at all ...

  • I listened to it 5 times and on fifth time I noticed small mistakes only 1 word. WOW

  • Good thing she took such a sprightly tempo... Things tend to slow down once we hit the big 3 0 :P

  • she's so pretty!:) and an AWESOME violinist:) most of the notes were totally nailed.

  • I am familiar with gypsy people and gypsy music because I have lived in Hungary & Romania for a year. What Akiko is playing is a laughable immitation of gypsy music. Her playing is her style , not gypsy style. She should listen to the way real gypsys plays it. Their videos are on YouTube.

  • poor. She doesn't know gypsy music.

  • @freeqwerqwer Do you know Gypsy music?

  • Wow best !!!!

  • OMG! I almost pissed myself! that was the best and fastest recital on youtube i have ever seen in my life!

  • No white person could do this

  • @Unafavola1 ahahaha!

  • wow you are sooo good! i play this at the moment bt i really wish i was as good as you are! (:

  • Easy as it looks...

  • Heifetz tempo, not Heifetz articulation and clarity though. Still extremely impressive.

  • way too fast, but she handled it

  • how long are they going to clap??

  • played really well, although i don't like it at this speed, is it meant to be this fast? cos i've heard other version and it was no where near this far

  • THAT IS NOT EASY!

  • this is heifetz tempo.

even though i like suwanai as a violinist, she butchered this piece with the speed. Some of the dynamic nuances are good, but most of the rubato and tempi don't really work. The gross ritardandos are a bit ridiculous, but in the tranquillo and cantabile passages she has a nice tone. I think she's having fun with this piece, which i guess is important, but this rendition doesnt give wieniawski nor the piece justice.

  • Undeniably a splendid rendition. Although quality of sound leaves something to be wished for.

She is not a street musician, that is clear.

  • Amazing!!

  • I like Her very much!!!Thanks for posting this video !!!

  • It's like she's playing in fast forward!!!wow

  • Amazing! What nationality is she? Japanese? She's awesome. The piece too!

  • how old is she?? she looks young tho

  • The concert was given Feb. 6, 2002, or just 1 day before her 30th birthday.

  • @haneem95 she should be around 40 by now. I used to hang out with her sometimes when she was living in ny.She was so pretty in her 20s(so is she now) When she was making her NY phill debut in 1998, she didn;t want to go shopping new dress for her most important debut performance, so I went out to get dress for her. Couldn;t believe such a beautiful young girl wasn't into stuff like that! She said that she didn't want to be disturbed for things like that. All she cared was music

  • too fast, like she was late for her train and trying to run after it

  • HOLY CRAP HOW FAST IS THIS

  • I love her playing!

  • Is this working?

  • There are 500 characters allowed, yet the character counter is not working.

  • I know a girl who is 10 years old. She playes it nearly as fast as her but she playes it not so.... uncontroled. I didnt like this performance... But everyone has an other intrepretation of a piece of music

  • SUGOI !!!

    amazing suwanai san!!!!

  • Oh my God...I'm scared...This is the most beautiful preformance I've EVER heard...

She is so amazing and wonderful.I adore her... :D I feel like I am in the magical fairytale...

  • It doesn't matter whether it's a tarantella, presto or adagio: If you are glossing over notes so the whole thing sounds like a mush there is no point. Even fast music has to have rhythm and the rhythm here is destroyed because the pulse is lost in trying to go break neck speed. Still, it was an encore and she's VERY gifted...so I suppose fair game.

  • its nice to see her smile:)

  • one last time...

a tarantella is not just FASTFASTFAST

    it contains more

  • Comment removed

  • This was out-fucking-standing. Maybe it's faster than Heifetz, but it's a FUCKING TARANTELLA! the faster the better, it's not like it's some pretty mozart or something.

  • Comment removed

  • What are you talking about can't control the piece? She was in total control. The style is perfect. Tarantellas defy rational thinking. Normally, the faster you play a piece, the less control you have, and the less you can express to the audience because the nuances fly out the window. However that is not the case with a tarantella. The tarantella is a fast piece, if you can control it (which she has the technical proficiency to be able to) you should play it as fast as your skill allows.

  • Comment removed

  • It's a real shame you have no clue what you're talking about.

  • I think, she can play it as fast as she wants, if she was able to do so, without getting it a bad sound...

she's running, its not clean, at all. There is no good synchronism between the both hands, she sticks the bow to the strings, so you don't hear it that much, but its meant to be played spiccato

if you wanna hear this piece in a good version, hear it with menuhin with arthur balsam from '32, because it's clean, the notes are the right ones and there is unbeleavible emotion and musicality!

    cu

  • Maybe she plays it fast due to time constraints. Can't have an encore being too too long.

  • No, she plays always fast. I have been listening to all her pieces on YT but she speeds. She is definitely very talented, but needs to know that we are not always in a hurry. Good she is, no doubt about that.

  • She plays fast, but not too.

I listened to Vengerov's interpretation and the one of Heifetz and Milstein.

Heifetz and Vengerov are playing just as fast, so her tempi might be justified.

Without any doubt, this samurai-lady will let us hear more in the future .....

  • She played too fast ( but excellent )

  • too gosh darn fast. i'm hearing duplets instead of triplets. the last note of each triplet isn't sounding, so it's not even a tarantella pattern. the whole thing's just a big scramble.

  • This man speaks the truth—Too f***ing fast. She's just showing off, although this piece is pretty showy.

  • Was dis Strad belong too Heifetz.????

  • Yes it is his "dolphin" strad

  • Absolutely incredible. I've never heard it that fast. As soon as the piano started playing, I was pre-amazed...

  • @jaressloo you might wanna checkout the Heifetz interpretation that for me is the best one yet. but the her interpretation totally live up to the song

  • Very nice job, Jascha Heifetz

    will never be surpassed.

    He is the benchmark to

    all violinists. He was

    the greatest.

  • ella es simplemente fantastica, aunque la prefiero con esa candides e inocencia que derrocho en su participacion en el concierto de Tchaikovsky en el 90. i like it.

  • starts at 1:40

  • probably the most mesmerizing performance on youtube. too bad they don't have ricci..

  • this rendition didn't touch me... though the first part can do (remember Heifitz)..

don't like this sound at all

  • This piece should be played Presto. I hate it when it's played at a slower pace!

  • i love her playing!.....GREAT!

  • Not quite a virtuoso but almost.

  • Are you kidding!? She won the international Tchaikovsky competition!!!!

  • My bad, but I compared her to the best of the best (Heifetz, Menuhin, Hassid etc.).

  • She's not quite that level, Noone is ever going to match Heifetz... But she does play on the violin Heifez used to use...

  • Akiko Suwanai q bello bellisimo

  • Wow, interesting. Find it amazing how she brings out things I´ve never heard before in this piece. Interesting tempi. The question answer play between piano and violin comes ou so good. Indeed very different than the others, but hey, think that´s a goog thing. Also like the very fast tempo and changes in tempo.

  • This is ridiculous, even if she CAN play the piece this fast doesn't mean that she SHOULD play the piece this fast. One could play Twinkle Twinkle Little star very fast too, couldn't they? yet it still wouldn't make the piece sound any better. I really dislike this interpretation; it is much too fast

  • No way! Listen to Yehudi Menuhin playing this piece, he plays it just as fast, if not faster. I don't hear anyone complaining about his playing.

  • non-understanding... and, Whatt??!!

  • peut-être !!!que la musique est autre chose,néanmoins personne ne peux jouer aussi vite!!!!

  • 此人根本就不按节奏来,,,

  • 那么我猜想这是她的一块版本, 它非常好.

  • why to play so fast ? Is it music or a race ?

  • Not really........ she's got great technique, and she's got Heifetz' strad, but she is NOT the female Heifetz as she does not have his tone and his non-stop speed, as she slows down sometimes. AND this is not criticizing.

  • non-stop speed? hahaha! I think you and I both know this lady is MORE than capable of playing this piece through without slowing down.

  • lol,,,, do you get what i'm saying? I never said she wasn't able to play it without slowing down, I just said that she doesn't happen to play how Heifetz does.... Heifetz never slows down playing this piece, whereas she does....... and she slows down for reasons, not that i said she couldn't play it at non stop speed..... dude, think before you post a comment

  • LOL the female Jascha Heifetz!!

  • she has a very... unique vibrato. but i love her as a violinist. very very talented and underappreciated

  • Is accomponiment is Berezovsky?

  • @takhirviolinest It's Boris. :o She could hardly have hoped for a better accompanist that day.

  • She is one of the Great violinist's. She is absolutely winner of Tchaikovsky violin competitions in 1992 and she was play Tchaikovsky violin concerto by original sheet's with out cut and very well... Respect for her

  • she was AMAZING for her age during the tchaik competitions and she blew everyone else away, but she's gotten worse now as she's obviously stopped practicing much after the competitions.

just listen to her paganini concerto now and from back then.

  • If you know the matirial when you did till 22 year's will be all time with you even you now practise. For example Paganini didn't practise at all after few time's frim his live. She was one of the great violiniste. She should be play very nice and good if she want. I suggest you to listne my playing and comment it.

  • its piece not a song. songs suxxxxxxx

  • Too faaast !!!

  • 3:00 where the slow part starts is absolutely beautiful =O.

  • OMG, great playing too but what beautiful accompaniment.

  • beautifull Akiko¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡

  • no matter what, i think i'd be quite happy to hear this as the last piece before I leave the concert hall at night.

  • I think this version is a little too fast to enjoy the piece. Good, but fast.

  • i agree. it's so fast the last note of each triple is barely heard or not at all, and it sounds more like a duple. it has to be an even triplet.

  • She deserves to use Jascha's violin like she is now

  • wow. amazing! never have i heard it played like this! fantastic!

  • ...in my dreams

  • she like a Ferrari with a 20 cylinder engine , but it stays cool and composed at high velocity.

  • you're a born romantic haha

  • I wish i could play this with her stance...i find i get too flustered, especially during the first minute...i'm not sure why. Her fluidity is the best i've seen. She's great!

  • holy crap this is fast and amazing.

  • This is godsent.

  • she looks good in that black gown

  • very fast..... and accurate... I am a violin teacher myself and I think I still have problems with this piece...

    hahahahaha

  • BRAAAAAVO!!!!!

  • little to fast

  • Her technique is impressive; but it reduces the piece to a mere finger exercise. Nice and irrelevant.

  • Absolutely marvelous technique with incredibly accurate intonation & octaves. Expressive and beautifully phrased in lyrical passages as well! Simply superb, wonderful, & magical !!

  • Hm, the whole piece is transformed because of the tempo which is ridiculously fast... Why so much vanity? Here lies a sacrificed Tarantella... tortured and mutilated... rest in peace.

  • well said.

  • ridiculously fast .... i agree....

  • What happened to Heifetz's version?

I can't find it on youtube anymore!

sweet, sweet music. GONE. I can't listen to any other version! no offense Akiko.

  • Tat's sum fast fiddlin' their.

  • This is Chairman Mao~~~~ I've heard Wieniawski played this piece faster than Suwanai~~~

  • wooooooooow. [speechless]. her arm looked like wood -_-'' and the change in tempo was kinda weird. but still impressively fast.

  • Between the hysterical tempo and "epic-masterwork" delivery of the lyrical passages, this performance is DOA. There's no savoire faire. (There's a reason why people refer to short works such as this as bon-bons, no?)

  • wayyyyyy too fast.

  • indeed

    this is totally ridiculous!!!

  • this song's so damn fast, that when I mess up, I remember that it's okay because even Akiko's having frustration playing with it. This song's monstrous! Powerful and beastly. One day, I'm going to be able to perform this at Carnegie! lol.

  • Sorry, what I wanted to say was, please do not call this kind of classical piece "a song". 'Music' without 'Lyric' can't be called 'Song

  • it doesnt have to be song, its music

  • It was a bit fast, but I actually liked it that way. Akiko Suwanai is an amazing violinist!

  • i love heer!!

  • ...and the pianist said, "Look, lady! You only have four fingers to think about! I have ten!"

Just kidding. I too found it to be a tad quick, but impressive nonetheless. The tempo changes weren't exactly my cup of tea, but that's the nature of the beast.

    Brava!

  • good!

  • これはいどい。

    タランチュラの足がもつれている(笑)。

  • she also looks so stiff! it's not good once you get older. and that sudden lapse of tempo wasn't very musical. it may have been if she played it better. good violinist nevertheless

  • oh my, it's a bit too fast for her. the clarity isn't very good. it would be better if she played slower and worked on her string crossings.

  • Uncomfortably fast.

  • toooooo fast! where's the music?

  • Heifetz could play much fast than her. but he knews that it will be sounding like that. actually, he will be playing much clear than her though. However, she is a great violinist.

  • OMG ! what a terrible mess !!!

  • I think it's too fast, she never takes time for the Music, it's only speed. She plays the piece like a machine. Maxim Vengerov plays it soo beautiful en musical.

She plays it too fast and to less musical i think

  • Maxim Vengerov plays is so much better, and not like a machine.

even though it's virtuoso piece still makes music

  • who cares what race she is?

she's a professional violinist for a reason, and there's nothing else to say about that. she's fully aware of the pace she's playing at, and she chose it because she thought it would bring out the best style of the piece at her full potential. amateurs should treat her with the respect that she deserves.
