One of the most cynical aspects of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was that it encouraged people to slander and demogoge gay servicemembers or even deny our very existence, while preventing us from defending ourselves. Day after day I would go to work and hear sterotypes, anti-gay jokes and such, and I couldn't challange them. I couldn't say, "Hey, I'm gay and I'm not like that." For the first time in 17 years, I ACTUALLY feel like I can trust my battlebuddies and be part of the team.

The repeal of DADT has nothing to do with women or people of color. Being gay is somewhat a sexual perference (no offense) it defines one's partner of preference. Gays were never excluded from service, they have always served in the US Armed Forces but could not say they were gay or be seen in that lifestyle (dating, partying and such). Being excluded from the armed forces due to gender or ethnicity was a very different issue.
