I drove my friend's Fiat 500 the other day and "happy" is precisely the word I'd use to describe it. It's so small and awesome it gives me a genuine feeling of joy, a perfect car for perking up a crappy day. Not to mention it's tons of fun to drive as well. I want one so badly it hurts.
I can't figure out what Jeremy likes so much about the 500. Even the Abarth is slower than.. most anything. The only thing to like about it is the style, which is cute, but not much else. Driving a MINI after a 500 shows you how good it could be, if they did it right.
I see one of these quite often in my area, the pops and bangs and snarls that the engine makes are unbelievable. One of the best sounding cards i have ever heard :O
I want to drive one! More importantly, I want to see how reliable they are, and how well Chrysler dealers are able to work on them. Everything from engine to switchgear will be new to them. From a recent road test (Road & Track?), they pointed out that hills and passing at 70 mph needs a downshift in the 500, but not the Mini, but they liked the 500's engine smoothness better. The base Mini was a bit faster than the non-turbo 500. I'd go with GTI over the Abarth SS, if I was buying now.

@CemetaryGatesML OK that is your opinion. The Abarth 500 looks pretty aggressive to me. Thats one reason why I bought one. Twin exhausts, scorpion badges, sexy alloys, sport leather seats..it couldn't be more aggressive than the standard Fiat 500. I think the Mini Cooper looks alot more feminine and the interior is hideous. My Abarth is also fantastic fun to drive. It's a pleasure to own. Everyone says it looks great, especially the rear exhausts. I'm going to upgrade to the SS version very soon

I hate small cars. I'm 6'3" and weigh 230lbs. This is the first small car I have ever drove that I had to move the seat forward. I drive a Ford F-250 diesel and am buying one of these for a commuter car. I love everything about it.
@Alakzander "I am *in* a Lamborghini, really." Jeremy rarely likes small cars, but he really liked the Fiat 500 Abarth SS. The new Fiat 500 has been featured on the show a bunch of times since then, and no wonder, it's a nice little car in every incarnation. One of the surprises is that he also liked the new Skoda Yeti, which is basically a big SUV-style car in a small package. One of those bigger-on-the-inside practical cars.
Fiats have just appeared for sale here, the Abarth wont be here till 2012 but I test drove the standard 500 Sport and found it to a very enjoyable car, interior ergonomics are great, the standard features list is very impressive, only niggle I have is that if your 5-11 or taller dont order the glass sunroof, my hairs were scraping the ceiling on the test drive, but I had plenty of room on the regular hardtop. I am saving up my down and will be on the waiting list for the Abarth early next year.
Fix it again Tony. Wow, had a 128 years ago, never looking back. There was a reason the company pulled out of the U.S. years ago. Emissions and crash standards were the excuse I believe at the time. Grossly unpopular/falling market share most likely the true reason. The 124 Spyder was a very hansom car I will admit and a blast to drive. Mechanically temperamental like the rest of the line-up.

That car is an abomination. The most ridiculas and ugly new production car I have ever seen. I am a dodge fan so I feel like I should have some loyalty to its parent company Fiat but there is no way a car like that can be successful in North America.......I saw one of these at my local Dodge dealership for the first time today and I threw up in my mouth.
@MrLiontheory I guess Chrysler buisness is not going so well if they brought Fiat... With the gas prices like now, Fiat will take over Dodge over this summer.

@CemetaryGatesML OK that is your opinion. The Abarth 500 looks pretty aggressive to me. Thats one reason why I bought one. Twin exhausts, scorpion badges, sexy alloys, sport leather seats..it couldn't be more aggressive than the standard Fiat 500. I think the Mini Cooper looks alot more feminine and the interior is hideous. My Abarth is also fantastic fun to drive. It's a pleasure to own. Everyone says it looks great, especially the rear exhausts. I'm going to upgrade to the SS version very soon

but based on my opinion and many others, the car doesent look agressive, to you yes, to me...no.
you think a cooper is more feminante... i think a cooper S with alloys and a dark gret paint job with dark red stripes looks badass.

@CemetaryGatesML Yes of course its good for me. It's not good for you. It's your loss in my opinion. I can assure you that most people share my view on the style. My Abarth 500 is a much better car than the Mini. It's not just about looks. It's special, like most Italian cars because it's got soul and character. Anyway, like you said, each to their own. I'm happy so I don't really care.

Everyone says our American cars are shit, and honestly for the most part I agree, but shut and do something please we beg you! A lot of European cars look better, are faster, AND more economical, not to mention better made, you dont even have to flip the steering, I'm dying to own a right hand drive sports car

I hate small cars. I'm 6'3" and weigh 230lbs. This is the first small car I have ever drove that I had to move the seat forward. I drive a Ford F-250 diesel and am buying one of these for a commuter car. I love everything about it.

@Alakzander "I am *in* a Lamborghini, really." Jeremy rarely likes small cars, but he really liked the Fiat 500 Abarth SS. The new Fiat 500 has been featured on the show a bunch of times since then, and no wonder, it's a nice little car in every incarnation. One of the surprises is that he also liked the new Skoda Yeti, which is basically a big SUV-style car in a small package. One of those bigger-on-the-inside practical cars.

Fiats have just appeared for sale here, the Abarth wont be here till 2012 but I test drove the standard 500 Sport and found it to a very enjoyable car, interior ergonomics are great, the standard features list is very impressive, only niggle I have is that if your 5-11 or taller dont order the glass sunroof, my hairs were scraping the ceiling on the test drive, but I had plenty of room on the regular hardtop. I am saving up my down and will be on the waiting list for the Abarth early next year.

Fix it again Tony. Wow, had a 128 years ago, never looking back. There was a reason the company pulled out of the U.S. years ago. Emissions and crash standards were the excuse I believe at the time. Grossly unpopular/falling market share most likely the true reason. The 124 Spyder was a very hansom car I will admit and a blast to drive. Mechanically temperamental like the rest of the line-up.

this is my one of my favorite cars ever for one simple reason........ it makes me smile every time i see it and my dad is a serios guy,and when he takes his fiat 500 he smiles,in a car the best thing you can have is its character,and the feeling that it delivers,not even a ferrari or lambo can match it :),you guys might dissagree but i dont care,if i feel happy thats all i want :)

That car is an abomination. The most ridiculas and ugly new production car I have ever seen. I am a dodge fan so I feel like I should have some loyalty to its parent company Fiat but there is no way a car like that can be successful in North America.......I saw one of these at my local Dodge dealership for the first time today and I threw up in my mouth.
