  • @0e0l7i

    "real human rights discrimination" ??

have you been to gaza? well i live here. dont compare us to nazi germany, and stop yelling out antisemitism, we are not against jews as people, just the actions of the israeli military.. we are all humans, regardless of race or religion, and we deserve our right to live

  • @marzutrall this is not about land... this is about basic human rights

  • I honour all the brave activists who boarded the Gaza flotilla and I especially honour the memory of those who lost their lives trying to bring humanitarian aid to the people are experiencing one of the worst human rights situations in the world today. The Israeli blockade of Gaza and general brutal occupation of the Palestinian in their legally recognized land is, by the most fundamental standards of international law, completely illegal and morally indefensible.

  • @MrDarkbloom hhahahahahaha you're funny!!!

  • @FiREFLYSerenity408 And you're (probably) an inhumane prick. hahaha

  • @MrDarkbloom and you're (probably) a limp-wristed liberal hippie wimp!!! hahahhaha I love Israel!!!

  • And to think, at cardiff university people are ficked out for running over bushes with trolleys.

  • this looks like a scene out of Nazi Germany. Universities singling out Jews for discrimination. countries with real human rights discrimination like China, Iran and Saudi Arabia are never protested about!

  • Silly English students. BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! Go watch your Harry Potter!

God Bless the United States of America and Israel!!!!

  • koduğumun piçi

  • @FiREFLYSerenity408

I'm an English student, we're not all like this.

  • @1878EFC2008 I know not all of you guys are like that, I like the UK by the way.

  • can I ask how does stopping some univeristy proffesors leaving a building in their cars stop a war in the middle east ?

  • It's just one small contribution to a global struggle.

  • you want to stop war? go to palestine, stand in front of some tanks, thats stopping a war, this is uni students pretending its the 60s, nothing more

  • This contributed to the struggle against the Israeli genocide because it was one of the decisive events of the occupation, whose victory and whose very presence strengthened the movement for boycotts of companies which financially and logistically support the IDF, because it increased the profile and the funding of the Viva Palestina project and the DEC appeal, and because of its (not major, but notable in the short term) positive effect on the morale of people in Palestine.

  • Not to mention its significance to the struggle for student emancipation in Britain.

  • how do students in britain have to struggle for politcal rights? first of all...

  • The right to a free education

The right to a true education (ie a curriculum that isn't half bullshit)

The right to an emancipating education (admittedly progress has been made in that quarter in the past half century or so, but there's a long way to go)

The right to democracy in the institutions

The right to freedom from scrutiny into the private life of a student

  • excuse me, am i missing something here, free education how dont students have that? right to a true education (ie a curriculum that isn't half bullshit) if your referring to Unis having pathetic degrees in child care and such easy things then I aggree, democracy in the institutions?? right to freedom from scrutiny into the private life of a student ??, alot of this just sounds like you had a bad time at uni to be honest mate

  • too true.

  • Well done, this is great. FREE PALESTINE!!!

all the haters can get lost

  • "There is no such country as Palestine! Palestine is a term the Zionists invented! There is no Palestine in the Bible. Our country was for centuries part of Syria."

    - Arab Leader Auni Bey Abdul-Hadi to Peel Commission, 1937

Listen to Abdul-Hadi and call them what they are: "Other Arabs From The Same General Area Who Are In Deep Denial About Never Being Able To Accomplish Anything In Life And Would Rather Wrap Themselves In The Seductive Melodrama Of Eternal Struggle And Death."

  • I think, by the looks of it, we fundamentally disagree on this issue but c'est la vie. each to their own i suppose.

  • Meh, ok. It chafes just leaving it there, but sometimes people can't be convinced of the extent and nature of an instance of oppression without experiencing it directly and unambiguously themselves. You probably would find a trip to Palestine enlightening though...

  • I'm still interested to hear how you found the occupation personally disruptive though - its very important that we, as activists, learn from our mistakes

  • Hmm, I resent that you don't think I'm aware of the 'oppression', and that it is simply ignorance that leads me to my beliefs on the subject. I also resent the fact that people so freely fling terms like oppression around when discussing a group of people who through all of time have been oppressed and shunned. I know the counter argument to this is going to be, and i understand it, but the Jewish people deserve a land, because the rest of the world has simply failed to protect and respect them.

  • "the Jewish people deserve a land, because the rest of the world has simply failed to protect and respect them. "

You misunderstand the basis on which the state of Israel exists. Israel has always belonged to the Jews, since it was promised by God in the bible. Also, international law since the 1920's clearly states that the entire land of Israel belongs to the Jews.

  • The fact that the occupation is now over anyway (and will remain over indefinately, assuming the negotiations go well) notwithstanding, the room was available for normal use even while the occupation was ongoing - in fact the occupiers made great effort to make sure it was in a teach-able state whenever there was a lecture planned, and there was a sign in the corridor outside saying exactly that.

  • As for what it has achieved, even if the demands aren't met (which would only result in re-occupation anyway), the occupation has been largely responsible for the rebuilding of mass activism in the Manchester student community.

  • As much as i sympathise with the cause, the rallies, protests and occupation have disrupted at least one students learning, and that is one student too many.

I wish to congratulate those who have been involved because the dramatic change in Israeli policy has been well worth it.

  • "disrupted at least one students learning, and that is one student too many" - As in you? Mind if I ask how so?

"I wish to congratulate those who have been involved because the dramatic change in Israeli policy has been well worth it."

Bringing down a state is a long-term process. But yes, the dramatic change in public opinion in the last 2-3 months is a very significant step.

  • 'Bringing down a state'??????? Are you kidding me?

I really hope that wasn't meant to sound how it sounded? Those who campaign for the removal of the State of Israel completely help destroy the only way a solution can be found, to create two separate states.

  • The so-called 'two-state solution' is not a solution, nor is it necessarily even two states, in that its based on the idea that the second state would be formed around the Palestinian Authority. You might have noticed how the Palestinian Authority is corrupt, anti-democratic and a puppet of the Israeli regime, and could never be involved in a solution to the vicious spiral of oppression and the reaction to it - nor could the fundamentally racist State of Israel.

  • 'One-and-a-half state perpetuation' might be more accurate terminology.

  • ORLY?

Its about freeing people from institutionalised racism and institutionalised destitution. Everyone I spoke to in the occupation seemed to understand perfectly.

  • You mean fundamentalist Islam, specifically. And in places like Iran and Saudi Arabia, they do. In Britain, Islamic fundamentalism has no real influence and there's not a lot we can do to influence it either, whereas our government and our corporations fund Israel's wars directly. So for obvious reasons, it makes more sense for us here to not waste our time.

  • Alan Gilbert, we know you - Melbourne Uni hates you too!

  • Excellent presentation of the events, 5 stars.

  • Excellent report, really sums up what happened on the day in a fair and balanced way.

Yesterday (friday) the Vice Chancellor finally agreed to enter into negotiations with representatives from the occupation and the student executive on Monday. He has obviously seen how commited students are to this cause and just how quickly students can mobilise in large numbers. Even if you don't agree with the politics over Palestine, I think everyone can admit that this is a victory for student activism.

  • Alan Gilbert is a dick!
