This is true NBA when players and talent mattered more than salaries and ego...NBA in 90s was classic, NBA on NBC priceless! And has not been the same since!
2nd Q, Eisley makes 3 pointer, shot clock NOT expired. Refs call it off. Say, shot clock expired. Second half: Harper makes layup for Bulls.....AFTER.... shot clock expired.......(refs say it's good)..Now we're up to 5 points in the Jazz favor. Forget about Jordan fouling Russell (even though he did), the Jazz should have been up by 3 at that point. Doubt it? Watch the footage. It happened. Bulls given title for marketing. Your rulers were happy.
@Cydonia Oh fuck off loser. What about the other 6 games? Your statement only clarifies Jazz should have won THAT GAME. They still would have went to a game 7 where Chicago would have won. What an idiot statement on behalf of YOU and only YOU.
The NBA on NBC music just gets me pumped up. Those were the days. And Bob Costas' line about Rodman - "Dennis Rodman doesn't prefer Utah, at least it's close to Vegas." That was priceless.
Yeah, but i doubt that will happen. No matter how much NBC may offer, Disney just offers more money. This was Stern's one mistake as commish. He took more money but the ratings for the NBA on ABC...suck. NBC is a proven sports channel as their ratings just skyrocket for everything except the NHL but they still draw decent ratings. I agree, the NBA was at it's best when on NBC as everything was perfect but as long as Disney continues to throw money at Stern, the NBA won't be on NBC :(
And as long as Disney, ABC, and ESPN has the NBA, the NBA's ratings will continue to stink the way it does now.
CBS started the trend of basketball's booming popularity w/ the likes of Bird, Magic, Dr. J, and Isiah. NBC did a outstanding job picking up where CBS left off and took the NBA to new ratings highs w/ the likes of Jordan, Hakeem, D. Robinson, Duncan, Shaq, and even Kobe in his early years. ABC/ESPN took the NBA to new high-LOWS. Their 2007 NBA Finals games were beyond horrific.
Man this music definitely brought chills all over my body. I remember I was a sophomore in college when this Finals took place, where else but IN CHICAGO!!!!!!! Driving around, all going crazy. THOSE WERE THE DAYS. NBA ON NBC. Bring it back to NBC. "PLEASE"
If HE called that last shot he'd yell "YEEES AND IT COUNTS" or some showoff, showup the moment shit like that..
Costas NAILED that call....He's understated and knows when to let the MOMENT play out rather than try to show up the moment with his voice.
Costas was trained in the Scully, Jack Buck (Joe sucks ass), Chick Hearn, Enberg, Nantz, Summerall type school of broadcasting...Let the MOMENT be the thing not the call of the moment..
wow every time i hear the nbc tune it gives me chills especially the part when the guy announces the teams...just imagine if nbc covered this years playoffs, it would be the most epic ever
This was the final game of the NBA's roughly 17 year golden era, starting with Magic's MVP performance in Game Six of the 1980 NBA Finals. It wasn't just Jordan's retirement, it was the lockout that also started the league's decline.
Of course, there's been just an awesome year for the NBA this season, and if a great playoffs culminate with *fingers crossed* a Celtics-Lakers Finals...we could be heading back to glory as fans.
74.5 million. That's how many people watched this game. I know Jordan had something to do with it, but so did NBC. ABC can't even come close to half that.
ATTENTION NBA FANS. Sign the petition. Bring back the NBA on NBC. Please. Let's come together as one and make a statement and climb our way to the top and get the most signatures.
I have this game on tape. I live in Illinois, we had a tornado warning for our city during the game. It was pretty cool, the station only broke in during the commercial breaks. Great game, and call it ironic, but I remember the skies cleared in the 4th quarter.
Watching these old clips, it makes me wonder where this hip hop/gangster nba culture came from, and why it started.
You had 30-40 years of classy, "normal" players...Dr J, Moses Malone, Magic, Isiah, to Drexler, K Malone, Olajuwon. Guys you could relate to. And now it's a bunch of fools running around, acting like they're everything, but they're a bunch of 4 year olds.
That's not necessarily true about all classy guys, but this sport did turn into hip hop and it was because of the rise of the high school players. High school players were punk kids who were still immature and spent a lot of money and did not know that they could stay off the streets. They didn't have many high school players back then. That's why the NBA cancelled the high school rule, to give kids time to mature, hopefully because of thsi the nba will go back to it's good days.
Does anyone have the game 5 intro? I believe it showed some of the Bulls arriving before the game and mentioned it was possiblly the last time the Bulls played together.
goddamnit how come noone got me into sports at this time!i never got to see micheal play as a bull.looking back now my favorite year (1998) looks so outdated compared to intros now adays.
bring back the nba on nbc it should have never left for gay ass abc that was stupid the finals haven't been the same since who's with me NBC NBC NBC!!!!
It would be nice to see the NHL outrate the NBA. 8 fucking years, for that matter I hope NBC gets Olympic rights for 2016. Marv Albert just turned 66. Jim Fagan will be dead then. The good news is, Stern should be out by then, and someone with common sense will be commissioner. Ha, I'll be 30, NBC's longest contract was 4 years. Its not just because of the bad play that no one watches, its the broadcast itself, the announcers, the producers, hell even the people that do the music.
Somehow, I think, after seeing the ratings for this years Finals, more people would watch this game (Game 6, 1998 NBA Finals) than the current Finals. People just don't think of saying one aspect thats bad with the Finals, is the television deal. NBC needs to pony up enough money to get David Stern's attention.
Stern is an absolute moron, I'm reading where he wants to finalize an 8-year deal with ABC/ESPN, even though the ratings are in the outhouse. This is complete bull. Come on Dick Ebersol, pay up!!!
Best Intro music....NBA on NBC made you want to watch the game.....NBA on ABC has the worst music for the NBA......PussyCat dolls look good but plz use a different song
NBC had a way of making games dramatic. My entire family watched the NBA games in the 1990's, especially the Bulls. Now, my parents can only name two players in the league, Kobe and Shaq. ABC doesn't market at all, and they show a horrible product. Please outbid ABC, you saw what happened when you let CBS get the AFC in 1998.
The highest rated NBA game in history. This was also the highest rated NBA Finals in history. It beat out the 1998 World Series, which the Yankees won. The only Finals to best the World Series. NBC has that to show in Stern's face.
great rivalry, the by far best nba finals ive seen, too bad jordan didnt stick around during the laker championships, would of made a heck of an nba finals, bulls lakers jordan vs kobe

Now, with ABC, I intentionally turn the game on late if at all to avoid all the garbage they throw at us in the beginning that does little or nothing to build up the drama.

No, I think his MVP chances were always hurt because he played on the GREATEST'S team. Could you imagine MJ not winning the Finals MVP?
