That's a rather intellectually dishonest position. There are a great many Biblical "laws" and prohibitions that call for the death penalty. But, Jews don't see the old testament as a book of law for the modern world and Christians allegedly believe that Christ's teachings of tolerance, forgiveness and understanding supersede all. So it's very easy to see where Christians would get a "soft stance" approach to everything, really. It's the extreme view that is insupportable.
That would just mean that the Bible is contradictory, jbetp99. It wouldn't support any view, except that you shouldn't be basing important moral decisions on the Bible.
Evidence in favor of the extreme view is the Jesus character says that he came "not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it". That "till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled".
I'd like to offer another reading, that makes more sense, actually. The writings collected in the Bible were not meant to halt human progress 2,000 years ago. If anything, they are a chronicle of man's changing relationship with God, particularly through the adoption of monotheism. It's a journal of change, so yes, it will be contradictory, and no it was not meant by the writers to decree an end of thought or progress. This is not the most common religious view, though.
If your view is correct, then the laws of the Bible (supposedly sent down by a perfect and eternal being) cannot be used as a source of morality that a person can use to make important decisions. Inform, perhaps, but not determine.
It just feels like we agree. Now I'll quibble:
None of this seems beyond human, or transcendent. It isn't "man's changing relationship with God", it's man's changing relationship with his fellow man. We just redefine "God" to back up our own opinions.

That's a rather intellectually dishonest position. There are a great many Biblical "laws" and prohibitions that call for the death penalty. But, Jews don't see the old testament as a book of law for the modern world and Christians allegedly believe that Christ's teachings of tolerance, forgiveness and understanding supersede all. So it's very easy to see where Christians would get a "soft stance" approach to everything, really. It's the extreme view that is insupportable.

That would just mean that the Bible is contradictory, jbetp99. It wouldn't support any view, except that you shouldn't be basing important moral decisions on the Bible.
Evidence in favor of the extreme view is the Jesus character says that he came "not to abolish the law, but to fulfill it". That "till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled".
We are better than the god of the Bible.

I'd like to offer another reading, that makes more sense, actually. The writings collected in the Bible were not meant to halt human progress 2,000 years ago. If anything, they are a chronicle of man's changing relationship with God, particularly through the adoption of monotheism. It's a journal of change, so yes, it will be contradictory, and no it was not meant by the writers to decree an end of thought or progress. This is not the most common religious view, though.

If your view is correct, then the laws of the Bible (supposedly sent down by a perfect and eternal being) cannot be used as a source of morality that a person can use to make important decisions. Inform, perhaps, but not determine.
It just feels like we agree. Now I'll quibble:
None of this seems beyond human, or transcendent. It isn't "man's changing relationship with God", it's man's changing relationship with his fellow man. We just redefine "God" to back up our own opinions.

I would agree on the first point (though apparently someone out there thinks disobedient children should be stoned, since they marked that thumbs down).
But I think it's kind of silly to that the Bible has nothing to do with man's relationship with God. You could say idea of God, clearly, since we're talking about something intangible and that cannot be proved. But Moses isn't talking to his fellow man on Mt. Sinai.

Restatement: If a god doesn't exist, then people cannot have relationships with it. Since you do not offer proof of a god, all we can say with great certainty is that people have different concepts of gods at different times.
You have to allow for the fact that there are people like me who do not believe that anyone can have a relationship with a god.
Or don't. It was a quibble, after all.

I've heard a lot of hate spewed. And I've felt a lot of disdain in church. I still believe in God, and I still love my fellow man. But to hear that "man of God" go on like that makes me ill. The Bible also states:
Hate the sin, not the sinner.
Judge not lest ye be judged. Obviously that hate mongering "man of God" needs a refresher. May God bless him and keep him.
