@iwillblenderyou He used Corel Painter and it is NOT free. But cheaper alternatives are art rage, which is in the $30 range. A free progam for digital painting is Gimp, many people praise it but I personally haven't used it. Give it a try ;)

when i draw things i look at the character for reference

i.e:im drawing shadow the hadgehog and i need reference or else the drawing won't be too accurate.

dont draw with lines, draw with values and youll get a more realistic look. in the real world, there are no lines, just values that range from pitch black to bright white

the most likely tool to do it would have been a wacom tablet ?? and if you already know how to draw, all you gotta do is get used to using a tablet instead of a mouse, if u start off on the tablet, its alot harder

oh, so they use that 'color grab tool' and just take the colors right off of the original photo. I get it now. I was wondering how long it would take some of them to make palettes filled with all the colors they need for this. that would be annoying.
