Thanks for the post! I left my Joe & Eddie album, and other items, behind at UA (Fairbanks) when I had to hitchhike down to Seattle for a draft physical in 1970. Never made it back to Alaska--hope whoever inherited the album enjoyed it as much as I did.
If anyone out there could post "Drinkin' Gourd" and "Mariah" on YouTube, I would be mighty grateful.
I grew up in Berkeley, and Joe and Eddie were in the church choir with my parents, and used to visit us all the time. What a treat to see them here, back alive thanks to video. Thank you, thank you!
A friend who had an LP when I was 16 played it..and we fell in love with them. I have never forgotten them and just watched them perform two songs on The Best of Hootenanny. I think I will cull those two performances off of the DVD and put them on Youtube ..Other than Ian and Sylvia...Joe and Eddie were the only saving grace of that 1st Hootenanny disk.
I've always loved Joe and Eddie. I saw them perform live in Pasadena in the early 60's. They did so many wonderful songs -- I hope more video footage of them turns up here. They did the ORIGINAL version of, "The first time ever I saw your face," and it was different than later verions than became popular (and sweeter, too). Other good ones are "Where's the old man," (a kids' song, really), and "The water is wide."
They are without equal, I found them quite by chance, and must say they have impacted me more than any other act in musical history! It is my greatest wish that someone make a documentary about them, the most under appreciated folk group ever, hell , of any genre! Their music is so great no one can remain unmoved by it. I scoured the internet for any information about them and was moved to tears to find out Joe's untimely demise. Without a doubt one of the greatest tragedies in musical history.
I would have loved to see the (probably all white) studio musicians trying to keep up the rhythm these cats were laying down. Especially in the first minute-you talk about totally lost! I imagine there was a rehearsal prior to the actual event with a bunch of musicians just shaking their heads in amazement. Classic gospel-- just great .
Just got high speed...a new world, living in the Hawaii rain forest.
I grew up in So. CA. and remember seeing these amazing performers in many small clubs in the beach cities. Loved them then. Love them now. So amazed I found them. Where are they now I wonder?
Joe & Eddie were one of my biggest influences as a musician. This singing is so intelligent and cooperative in its musicality. They have no match in that regard. Thank you for finding this and posting.
I saw Joe and Eddie perform live probably about six different times in Southern California about 1963-64 at the Mon Ami in Orange, Ca and several other places. They were world class. I wish people had Flip video cameras then.
I wrote some songs with Eddie back in the early 80's when we were both working as songwriters in the LA area. Last I spoke with him - maybe 7-10 years ago, he was living a bit further north from LA - and still writing. An amazing soul and very talented singer/songwriter.
I first saw J&E in some dopey hootenanny kind of movie in 1963 or 1964. They sang "There's A Meetin'" and it was a wowzer. I bought a couple of their albums and later learned that Joe Gilbert was killed in a car crash in 1966. What a loss.
I'm sure glad I got to see "There is a Meeting" on YouTube a couple years back. Absolutely riveting. Thanks for posting it back then, jguth3. Hope WBG eventually sees the value of having it back on YouTube.
I knew Joe and Eddy as I babysat Joe's kids. Kevin and Little Joey.Their rendition of House of the Rising Sun Is the best I ever heard. Saw Joe a few weeks before he died.
Running of the group became too much for him and he had a breakdown. I was there the night it happened. I love them then and never got over Joe's untimely death. See you on the other side Joe. Your voice and perfect harmony will live forever. Don't know what happened to Eddie after Joe died. Judy Joe's wife disappeared too.
Shantoo, Oh my I would love to see them all again,Judy,Kevin and Joey. I am Elza Camacho and there were all a great part of my teenage years. I loved those boys as if they were my own.Judy was always there for me. Is Eddie still singing /producing? Thank you for your responds.
I've gotten the words, will take the cd and together 7 of us who have met weekly for a good while, will sing this out together to celebrate my and my friend's 4th yr of a religious study class. It's going to be awesome! Hope Joe and Eddie will be pleased!
I remember seeing this as a little girl, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and hearing it again took me right back to the black and white TV we had in our recreation room in our basement.
The magic of music.
I may not be a religious person, but this is what god is.
I make a point of listening to it once a day, and it works better than any "drug" or anti-depressant out there. It simply makes you feel better than good.
I grew up listening to my parent's Best of Joe and Eddie album back in the early 70s day and night. This brings back such good memories-how sad their career was cut short; they had more talent in their pinky fingers than many have in their whole bodies. Thanks for the pleasure of enjoying them again.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I woke up around 2 pm and all I could think of was "Children Go Where I send Thee"...after doing a search and listening to several others I discovered this wonderful duo. This was such a treat and I plan to send my friends to this. Again...thanks so much.
Thanks for the posting. I loved their music since I hear them in 1963. They also had the most beautiful version of Scarlet Ribbons. I have been looking for it for years. Maybe someone could post information?
Amazing! Thank you for posting this -- if it weren't for the magic of youtube, I probably would never have heard of these incredibly talented artists, much less seen them perform. These two should be household names.
They are magnificent. I had an album of theirs and I wore it out -- I couldn't then and still can't believe the brilliant blend of their voices. And to think of the talentless idiots who have become big stars. Ain't fair.
As odd as it is, I first heard this song last night, on a demo of Bad Company (shooter game) for the PS3. This isn't the arrangement/performance/whatever I was looking for, but I sure am glad I found it. These guys are awesome! ^_^
They are the most overlooked artists in all of musical history. They sing with all of their hearts. I found them by way of a friend inheriting his dad's records, I picked up the first one I saw, made fun of how I thought it would be, and then proceeded to be overcome with the finest live singing performance I have ever heard. Every song they do is the absolute best version in existence. It's heart breaking to have found out how they slid into relative obscurity. The Kingston Trio can bite it.
They were the greatest duet ever, I have every album on CD and vinyl. I was lucky enough to see them live many times in southern California and got to meet them and get autographs, They are the best!! E. Lineberry
Thanx for that. I remember seeing the specific show in high school I first saw Joe and Eddie on the Jackie Gleason show and was hooked. Got all their albums
I have searched high and low for precious little about them, finding this is something I cant even begin to explain, no singers have ever been this together , the live stuff is every bit as good.
I remember seeing them when I was a little girl and was so impressed. I think I even thought Eddie was so cute. Their talent was so unique and incredible.
Thank you so much for jguth3 for adding these very rare videos to my memories of my Uncle Joe! They were an original act that really spiced up folk music. Please let me know if you have more, and add them so others can see their gift. I intend to share all that's here with the family.
I had no idea who they were. But someone said I shouldn't miss the concert in the Burbank High School auditorium. I'm guessing it was 1964. What a thrill. What sadness when I learned that Joe died. I still have the original album I bought - The Best of Joe and Eddie.
Love harmony singing and Joe and Eddy bring back lovely memories. Can somebody tell me why I'm having trouble getting the whole song. It seems to cut out at 54 seconds. Most grateful in advance.
It might be a connection issue. I haven't had a problem watching this. My suggestion is to hit the pause button and wait till the entire song loads before watching it.
Ta, saskabush, for the suggestion, but it already looks as if it has been loaded (load line has gone from black to red), but it isn't playing till the end of red line. Don't have trouble with any of the other songs anywhere else on Utube. Does it have anything to do with the message that says - 'Embedding disabled by request'?
Glad to see this clip. My parents had a couple of albums by them and I've enjoyed their work since discovering it back in the 70s. I'd never seen any footage of them until now and while I knew Joe had died (learned that from an LP cover actually) I didn't know Eddie was still active till I found his website. It's a shame there's only one CD around with their work. The complexity of their vocals on this number is remarkable!
Forgot my manners...thank you so much for posting this xlnt video of J&E! We might have rubbed elbows at the Troub... ;-) btw, Joe died 8/6/66, an indelible date on my heart & soul.
Joe & Eddie were amazing. I've transfered all of their published music to CD's. Even the early CBS 45's. I know their second guitarist and talked at length with their first.
Do you know what Eddie Brown is doing these days? Also, btw, The Live in Hollywood album is now available on at Apple's i-Tunes store. Love to see all their albums out on CD.
Thank you so much for posting this great video. I have all of their songs and just about all of their records, missing only a couple of their very early singles. The Danny Kaye show was telecast on Saturday nights in my home town and I always waited home to see if Joe and Eddie were going to be on before I went out. They were so versatile; and how fantastic that you actually knew them personally.
Thanks for your post. The last time I heard them sing was back in the mid 60's.This brings back a lot of memories of that time."There's a meeting"was my favorite.
