@OnTheRazorsEdge Empires are expensive things to preserve and the people of those colonies eventually want home rule, which then require even more expensive wars.
@OnTheRazorsEdge Betrayal? If there was any betrayal it was Edward Vlll himself that committed it. He lacked the good judgement to avoid that despicable little Austrian corporal Herr Schicklgruber, and therefore lacked the qualities to be King. The Simpson woman was another matter entirely, but a fortunate factor under the circumstances. His abdication helped save this country from Nazi domination. Politics has little to do with it. It was a matter of good judgement.
I was very interested to HEAR King Edward's abdication speech... it is a bit haunting, and it does make a person ache a bit for his dilemma.
I do think that, notwithstanding any aspect of his relationship with Wallis Warfield Simpson, the king, as Prince of Wales, did not seem highly interested in the great burdens that a Royal role imposes... and his abdication certainly favoured Britain with a wonderful King in his brother Bertie and an exquisite Queen in his niece Elizabeth II
I was tihnking of the betrayal of His Royal Highness King Edward VIII by the Conservatives today and I almost wept.
Tellingly only 1 Conservative believed in His Royal highness King Edward VIII's right to be King and that man was Sir Winston Churchill.
Possibly the saddest thing of all is that even our "far-right" here in Britain don't even want our Empire back.

...We lost our great Empire because of our own mistakes.
