Helmets do nothing for your neck. Go to a motorcycle shop and get a neck protector. They range from a simple padded collar, to a serious $300 neck restraint device. I suspect mtn bike protection makers have something like this moto gear now. Wear it when going big --- save your neck/cervical vertibra!

wicked gravity video is right. full face helmets will save your skull and face. there is somthing called a fish spine and its a bunch of pieces of playstic that alow you to bend your back foward and not backward. it also offers a litle bit of lower neck protection.

They do nothing, as Wicked says. They protect you from hitting your mouth and stuff from the ground. Neck braces are sometimes worn because it keeps your head from swinging around and possibly tearing your brain out of its membrane (concussion) or hitting soemthing with your head while it's flailing around
