Unsung, when you came up with this broadcast it have done alot of our souls well. Sometime your mind goes back and wonder what happen to that group, female or male artist. Thanks
I LOVE unsung...the docs are so well put together and informative while being sensitive. I'm 21 and this show got me into Bootsy Collins and now Zapp. Before I only knew them from that love and basketball song. I'm glad TV1 came up with this show. Every episode is so touching
How they gonna have a show about Roger's influence on west coast rap and not mention or interview DJ Battlecat? That's some ole bullshit. Love Roger though.
@brittanyroo87 Damn I knew that on my first birthday (your birthday so ofcourse I'm bullshitting). 3 years ago my dad kept saying "More bouts to the outs" and I finally said "Dad, you where 30 when this came out and you don't know the words yet?!" I gotta admit though, "I can make you dance" is my favorite.
One of the best concerts I ever experienced was Roger and Zapp back in the summer of 1986, and it was a free outdoor concert in Oakland, CA. Roger really put on a great show, and I really was in awe of his showman ship, as well as his vocoder skills!! Roger is the king of the vocoder!!!
AHHH I was at that muthafucka, too!!! He turned it out. Man you brought back some memories with that. That's back when "Computer Love" dropped. All the dope dealers in the hood used to test their car sounds out with "Computer Love", "Girl That's Your Life" by Too Short, Run DMC, LL and "Batter Ram" by Toddy Tee.
I just want to say thank you so much Zapp Band for sharing your amazing talent, and awesome music with the world. Roger and Larry, I miss you both, and your contribution to the music industry. You are dearly missed. R.I.P! I know it has been about 10 years, but to all The Troutman Family, and Zapp if your reading this, I am so sorry about your loss, and you all are still in my prayers. May The Lord bless, and heal your broken hearts, and grant you His perfect peace where you hurt in Jesus' name.
My fave part of that show was when two of the band members picked Roger up (he was wearing a gorgeous gold outfit) and the band members picked him up, and put him on their shoulders, and then pulled his pants down. OMG! My sister, and I cracked up, and we were s-o-o-o shocked. We certainly did NOT expect to see that, but boy am I so glad we did! Hehehe!
But if it hadn't been for them, I don't think we ever would have had a chance to go. And I'll never forget Midnight Star opened the show, and then Roger and Zapp performed right after, and finally The Gap Band closed the show.
Continued...I was young, at the time probably 8 or 9 y/o, and it wasn't easy trying to go. I had to beg my dad to buy us those tickets, because he wasn't trying to budge, but thank God his ex-wife was going, and a few other people he knew, and we ended up sitting with them.
Oh, That Roger, he was such a baaaaaad dude on that voice box, and in general. Zapp too. Man, I can remember when my sister, and myself saw Roger and Zapp "LIVE" for the 1st and only time, Whew, they tore it up that night. That was the best show I'd ever seen.
i have had the pleasure of working with both roger ,bootsy and was a MEMBER OF MICOWAVE.before joining the zapp group more bounce was 7 years before micowave made a record also roger PLAYED THE GUITAR ON more bounce ITS A fact
this is aurum winton a.k.a. ronnie winton and i had the pleasure of being roger troutman's recording engineer(and kind of producer in trainning. sometimes he'd let me decide if a take was a keeper or needed to be recorded again). the unsung episode was good, but i would've liked to seen more on the original band members, the recording engineers from troutman sound labs. the ones who helped the troutmans make those records(bobby glover, jerome derrickson, jannetta boyce, michael warren, etc.)
Why is this not available to watch online when literally every channel now has an online outfit of some sort? TVOne's own reps and guests are always talking about what black people need to do and how we let ourselves get left behind, but then drag ass when it comes to having episodes on the web knowing how important that is these days.
....and yes Zapp, Roger, insanely awesome and such.
That was from when he and Ray Davis were recording the song for the Kareem Abdul Jabbar Retirement Video "I'm so happy" 1:47-1:50 he was trying to get his Synth sound changed for his "Sky hookin" part of the song
bootsy was also(along with roger)the producer of the first album by zapp. more bounce sounds like a song bootsy did with a group called microwave a few years later.
I can't wait to see this episode as well. I love this series "Unsung" for it showcases musicans/singers/bander which had a wonderful & unique contributions to the music world but for whaterver reason their voices became muted.
He was the one who originated that sound.. auto tune..
