I came to tears today listening to this. Just imagining what was going through his head when he was creating this. I wonder if he knew how this would make others feel. RIP Dilla and to everyone else who has impacted people in a positive way.
Its fucked up how people say that people didn't care about dilla until he died. I didn't know dilla was around until a couple years ago, and i dont think theres a day that goes by without me listening. Sounds like people are giving reasons to dick ride other dick riders.
man a lot of dilla dickriders only like him because it makes you look hip hop savy and most of you guys didnt give two shits about him until he passed, j dilla is a legend and definitly one of the goats but saying kanye isnt talented is bullshit, even his shit that you hipsters call garbage is heavily layerd with organs, strings and samples that fit perfectly within his song, also hes a dope mc, maybe he doesnt talk about things that are relevant to you but give the man his respect
After pointing the finger and calling people Dilla dickriders, the more people who know dilla the better because the more that know him the more it will spread and therefore more kids/people can be touched by the brilliance of J. Even if some people (which i highly doubt) just say they know j to seem cool. they might be the link to their little cousin who hears him saying Jay Dee, looks him up, falls in love with the music.
here is the entire ORIGINAL album ( not digitally remastered, but the ORIGINAL vinyl sound copy) on this channel.... themotherlodealbum1967 ...... check it out and enjoy :)
@snorlax140 haha i know. I mean yes dilla and kanye are both great producers but who cares if all your going to do on MOTHERLODE's video is argue it's dumb lol
this so deep when u realize the circumstances in which he sampled this...it must be some serious shit to know ur that close to death, but use it to produce things so beautiful and meaningful to so many. This song dope i can see why he used it.
Another in a long line of Canadian R&B classics that should have been more widely recognized. Can't believe this only finished #18 on the Billboard Charts in '69.
For other under-rated Canadian soul classics, give a listen to Bobby Taylor and the Vancouver's "Malinda" (1968), Shirley Matthews, "Big Town Boy" (1963), or Dr. Music's "Sun Goes By" (1972).
"When i Die" sampled on the last track of Donuts, the last album he worked on before he died. The symbolism is just too powerful. This is straight beautiful, Donuts, one of the most powerful hip hop records i ever heard.
It's funny how you sell records to someone you don't even know. And he turns out making music that you can't stop listening to. Much Luv to Detroit, My home and J Dilla, Soul Brother No .2 (1 for me). Peace
@bluelifemedia This is a piece that should be re-recorded and/or re-released. It was awesome back in the day and stands the test of time! Motherlode had the best sound and I hope they will be recognized for same.
Here's a challenge...can you find Peter Sarsted's "Where Do You Go To My Lovely"?
Im Just Glad this song hasnt been buried too deep to dig. People like dilla should be thanked for that. Although there is only one dilla there are the copious amount of forgetten brilliance laid on wax to be found which we should seek out not just after the head figures of sampling culture bring them out.
Anyone know the name of the track/artist Dilla used that has a bongo background, lyrics go"Don't be afraid to speak your mind, you'll find that your still a friend of mine,.."?
I heard this song with my wife;we were sitting in a restaurant and I heard this song (around 2003). I didn't have a clue who sang this...it sounded like early Chicago or Blood,Sweat and Tears. Then late one night a few years later, I was watching Adult Swim and heard the Dilla (the late, great Dilla) re-mix. I went to the AS web site, found the bumper, got the orginal title and headed to iTunes.
It's funny that I have discovered such cool music because of hiphop. People down sampling, but fuck that, son. I get a lot out of hiphop BECAUSE the sampling exposes me to other really cool music that I would never know about.
I agree...its so much fun rediscovering music that I otherwise would have never thought to look for, and most of the times I end up loving the originals
I know. Then, you go looking for the original and find even more great stuff, but I guess some people would rather have this stuff forgotten. If it wasn't for Adult Swim, I'd never have heard this song. It's got such a unique form. I love it.
My opinion about Kanye changed once I heard Finding Forever. He was trying to fill in Dilla's shoes. He was trying to sound like Dilla and his beats didn't turn out as nice. (Then again, how could they?)
Now that he's discovered the auto-tune, he's ruined his career.
I doubt he'll turn back around now that he's found a quicker and
easier way in getting a number one hit.
I do own Kanye's first 3 albums, and I got to admit "Spaceship" is one of his best beats.
@GrumpyPancake - dilla of course was better but i dont see how anyone could think kanye was ever a dilla copycat. their beats are very different. i dont care for him but kanye used to make some ill beats before he starting doing the garbage of today. now that dude illmind jacks dillas style at times but he has many sounds and is ill as fuck. tbh i think now that dilla is gone, its not a bad thing if one can capture a bit of that magic on occasion if they dont bite him on every track, like illm
Ever since i seen them videos about Kanye West being a bad loser and whatnot, his voice has been annoying man...ruined "spaceship" for me...well alot of his tracks...
you shouldn't be sorry...although i must admit kanye is a very good producer, i think even he knows that dilla was the truth. im sure kanye will gladly admit that dilla was an inspiration to him. if only dilla was still here...maybe hip hop wouldn't suck so much now...:(
there is so much great music out there. i never would have heard of this song if it was for dilla. which is a good thing and kinda a bad thing at the same time
God, it almost brings me to tears knowing that Dilla knew he would be dying soon while making Donuts. The more I find out about that CD, the more I respect and love Dilla's remaining music. I can only imagine what he would be flipping if we were blessed enough for him to still be alive.
yeah and whats also cool about Donuts is that instead of the album sounding dark and gloomy it comes out as a str8 heat maker nothing but feel good music! R.I.P. Dilla

i figure, if it sounds good, it's cool...
People always frown on sampling nowadays...
When honestly, that' been a major thing in hip-hop since the very first rap song...
Which was included a sample i believe...
Sampling is wonderful...
There's nothing wrong with fusing genres togetther and incorporating other styles to make your own unique thing that sounds nice...
I LOVE when people sample classical/ orchestra/ opera music... it's great :)
