I am the mother of 2 vets (1 Marine and 1 Air Force) . My youngest served 4 tours in Iraq and I am so grateful that he came home-- but as the song says no one walks away from this battle. Thank you for the song Stevie!
This one hit home, being an Army brat and wife. I watched my father go to war and my husband on more than one occasion. She was visiting Walter Reed Army Hospital when this song came to her. Her feeling's run deep for these men who serve, hoo-ra Stevie and thanks for the beautiful, haunting song. It touches my heart like no other.
The first time I heard this song was by her in person in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a very moving song! It brought tears to my eyes because I have a lot of friends and family that are serving and have served in the past! Thank you Angels!
She performed this song live at Red Rocks and it was awesome. I hate blind patriotic songs, assuming the US is always right, ignoring the horrors our sides do, and I did not sense that in this song at all. She explained it was written out of the madness or sadness she saw at a soldier's hospital, and it wasn't glorifying war at all. It had nothing to do with warmonger. I think our soldiers are abused by their(our) leaders, but know we must care for those they sacrifice for profits sometimes.
I see this as a song about the battles fought by the loved ones of soldiers, and the heartache that they deal with. It is about as opposite of glorifying war as any song can be. It isn't about how wonderful war is; it is about how heartbreaking it ends up being. Anyone who claims this song glorifies war either didn't bother to listen before they opened their mouths, or they are just drama hounds looking for attention.
Did anyone see the interview on bbc 1 breakfast show in England?
If so you would KNOW from the interview she is not glorifying war infact the soldiers asked her to finish this song but she couldnt get the chorus just right this is why 4 years later she finished it...So wish folk would think and look into things before writing an utter load of rubbish they know nothing about! Carry on the good work Stevie Nicks!
I consider myself to be a huge fan of Stevie's. She has always been a part of my cultural psyche since I was 15 years old when Rumours dropped. I'm really disappointed in this whole album, and this song especially. Musically, it is beautiful and hypnotic. It is full of the character of the songstress I have loved all these years. The lyrics, however, glorify war and continue the romanticism of it. Stevie is older now, and needs to feel connected to the culture, but this isn't the way.
I think wars are often fought for profit and we're lied to about what is wrong and right and what we're really doing and why. Sometimes we're securing areas for profiteers, contractors telling our soldiers what to do, not fighting to be free, but "regime change" for warmongers, so there is nothing wrong with a bicycling save the world type when that is the evil telling our soldiers what to do sometimes. Still, I loved this song and our soldiers deserve better leaders and better care.
@555pghbob She visits Veterans Hospitals to help them. What she is doing isn't glorifying WAR but the human spirit. She gives them ipods, she talks to them, and cares. She is not making war romantic.
I find it interesting that you think of this song as a "troop support" song...it is more like a woman who is doing her part in a revolution....this is about the correct frame of mind to be in today, as we are headed into revolution.
@medini2 and no one escapes from this battle, revolution or war, or not..because the real battle is about what is right and wrong and what is righteous...i personally think the wars we are fighting are for corporations, oil and to some extent, for israel. is any of that righteous? that battle i am struggling with daily as people are maimed and killed and in horrific pain...how can i escape that? how?
@medini2 You have obviously missed Stevie's reasoning behind the song...
"This song is from a poem written after my second visit to Walter Reed & Bethesda Hospitals. I printed the poem, all verses of it and started to give it out to the soldiers and their families every time I visited."
@medini2 no... Are you dense? It's Stevie's explanation...Another quote from STEVIE, NOT ME, for the slow people in the crowd...
"My Experiences spending time with our wounded warriors at Walter Reed Hospital over the years have taught me more about heroism and humanity than I can ever possibly say here. The honor has been all mine, and this song is for all of them and their families."
@P3SuperBee I am not nearly so dense as you might imagine, brother. Is this your natural way of speaking to people who ask questions of you? It surely is a sad state to be in. I hope you will be more forgiving of the next person who asks you a question or challenges right or wrong. There is no room in today's world for that kind of rigid thinking. I asked the question because, I see this song/poem quite differently...it can very well have 2 meanings, and one even the poet did not intend.
Not to mention... "Stevie is auctioning" the song on eBay and monies goto the Yellow Ribbon Fund. (helps military families)
So you can see it how you want. I'll I am saying, is the way it seems, everyone else here, has gotten it right, (in they see it the same way as the Poet / Songwritter, witch is one in the same.
I was in Barnes & Noble and heard this song for the first time yesterday and I stopped looking at the book I was reading.....and just listened. It really spoke to me because I AM a Soldiers Girlfriend and he calls me his Angel! I love this song.
@fmacfan She's a fantastic person. All the fame and fortune didn't change her, she still cares for himan beings for no other reason than they are human beings. Such a beautiful person, with a heart of gold. She gave her time to the men and women who are soldiers... she is their soldier.
moving!

Stevie and Lindsay back together again. Fantastic. Strangely, the lyrics remind me a little bit of 'war pigs' by Black sabbath!

@555pghbob Sorry but you are one of the fantasists who would rather be enslaved than free, you are indoctrinated just like we were in the 60s.
Sorry but you cannot attempt to understand war, those who fight, those who sacrifice, those who die.
"Glorify war" !!?? It has always been with us you neither understand human nature nor could you cope with realty.
I know "Imagine" is you anthem. A bicycling, save the "one world" planet type.
It will be too late to understand one day.WAR IS NOT ROMANCE
