  • "When My Baby Smiles At Me" was a hit for Ted Lewis twice -- first as a #1 record in 1920 (as Columbia 2908) and then again in 1938 (as Decca 2054) -- the version heard here. Ted had one of the hottest jazz bands in the '20s but slowly evolved from there into the maker of sentimental, slyly witty nostaglic hits. This track, Ted's theme song, captuires that mix of swing, tongue-in-cheek humor and good-hearted pathos. In total, the man -- between 1930 and 1938 -- had no lss than 102 hits!
