Finally, she is saying what everyone else knew was common sense. Who doesn't already know these people are making big money off their music being on youtube?
Who even heard of Rhianna before umbrella went viral on youtube?
There is a reason VEVO is on youtube SHARING their music for free.
They need to stop bitching and grabbing for more power with SOPA and the lawsuits that have been going on for more than a decade, destroying others life's for sharing and promoting a few songs as well.
I also agree that it should be possible to get a warning for content marked blocked by rights holders so it can be removed and changed before getting a strike against your account.
Can you imagine how many records "auto tune the news" would have sold if they didn't offer their music for free on youtube? ZERO ZERO ZERO. When record labels say, oh, this song has been viewed 100,000 times on youtube, that must mean they stole 200,000 dollars from our pockets! They need to be kicked in their lying morally bankrupt asses.
If I upload some of my art, which is completely my intellectual property, but use a clip from a song in the background, that owner can claim my entire video to profit from my work and benefit from free advertisement, or even put a strike against my account.
IT would be much better if both parties were compensated, because videos, and even covers take a lot of work to make. Even if not, they are giving advertisement to the label and that should be paid for.
I personally find it absurd that a record label can claim a video and generate revenue on things which include copyrighted content from others as well, just because a clip of their music appears on it. Traditionally you would at least have to share revenue, Chris brown may have made a million dollars on that wedding video, but the people who produced the hit video didn't see one cent even though they advertised the song.
ummm yeah big companies borrows from the little guy but there is a difference a big one. When the little guy borrows from the big companies they demand some form of compensation when the big companies borrows from the little guy they don't pay for those ideas now do they.
Homosexual activists understand the power of words.
Please visit my channel to watch a one-minute video clip in which popular atheist author Richard Dawkins admits that homosexual activists "hijacked the word 'gay'".

Any kind of posting of videos online can be helpful to companies by "advertising" it. It's stupid that these videos get taken down so quickly because of copyright.
I don't get it. If we upload copyrighted material, then the copyright owner MAY allow it, which is good, OR they reject it and we get a strike against our account. So basically, you have to risk getting a strike just to find out whether or not the copyright owner will allow the video. Is there any way we can check if a copyright owner will allow it before uploading the video, thus circumventing the strike?
@StargateMunky I got a "warning" saying "we have identified your video containing copyrighted content" or whatever and it said that I do not have to do anything at the moment. Next day, I get a strike.
@TheDecadeMoon Tell me about it. My channel is almost all original home movies. Youtube even granted me an unlimited time length for uploaded videos. I uploaded 1 short NFL clip & I got whacked with a strike. My account was then reduced to 15 minutes max for uploaded videos. I have 1600 videos online. Nearly everyone is my own. Yet youtube placed a strike against me for what was under 60 seconds of the same video uploaded by others. See my other comment below.

YouTube (as owned by Google) makes millions of dollars a year on pirated video uploaded to its site, yet hypocritically removes users for - gasp! - uploading a 30-second clip from a movie.
YouTube tells users to "only upload video that they own," but 90 per cent of the content on this site is uploaded by people who don't own it. So, what is it, YouTube?
The website that punishes its users for its own vague policies is the website that needs to get a grip.
The danger of facing adversarial (c) owners remains, especially in the event of a serious damage to their interests or an opportunity to inflict serious damage on somebody else.
Margaret Stewart states that most rights owners, instead of blocking, will allow the content to be published and then they benefit through the exposure from advertising and linked sales. Margaret discourages auto-blocking of borrowed content as rights holders would miss out on new art forms, new audiences, new distribution channels, new revenue streams and providing joy to the world.
I have clicked on Like, cause youtube actually made an official statement that in my opinion explains why the majority of its music based content still remains posted without challenge and it advocates a community friendly application of copyrights.
Copyright owner abuse THE FUCK out of these matching systems. I once did a death metal cover with a musician named Andy Rehfeldt of Armstrong's What a Wonderful World. We put our cover, over some very old TV footage, it went viral, but one day Range Road Records decided to delete all Armstrong content from YT; songs, covers, our video too even though all the content we used was either free our ours.
So now every time I come across blocked content I torrent it. Greedy bastards, fuck em.
@HappyCabbie HappyCabbie, are you following me around? :D
Well anyway, me and AndyRehfeldt do that block appeal with other videos to restore them, but this one gets deleted straight up, no block or anything, just BAM - deleted and immediately deleted on re-upload. I wanted to write to Range Road Music, but I can't seem to find a website or anything :S
@HappyCabbie Nah, at that point the damage had been done and Andy's channel is in enough danger of being shut down for using original vocal tracks in his arrangements as is so we didn't want to bring more attention to it, besides we gave it to people to mirror it a bunch of times, so as long as it's on the internet making people laugh it's okay :)
Basically unless you have the corporate given privilege of having your video going viral, don't bother trying to spread awareness about a song or movie you like/dislike, or youtube will take away your channel.
@TheMarkRCS "so using copyrighted material is essentially legal" - Really? Have you created a new law? Try that and you'll end up in court. Doesn't matter whether you make money from it or not it's theft without getting permission from the copyright holders. Some artists think these videos are doing more harm than good to their songs. Don't make excuses to suit your own needs!
Doesn't matter if you're making money or not from the video, it's still theft whether you like it or not and you can end up in court if it's pursued and you will lose without a doubt! Damages could be crippling at least for anyone. Think carefully about it. If you get a warning from YouTube it's best just to delete the video in question, don't fight it. Definitely not worth it!
You support these....corporations? Even saying the name makes me sick! So corrupt...so biased....so uncaring....and copyright! That old copyright, those....things! Those sickening things, take it to the freaking extreme because they want to bathe in the one thing that is more evil than them...MONEY! They want to bathe in it, yes they do, and absorb the dark powers of it. The dark, evil powers, absorbing it like a sponge...to make themselves equally as evil!
@BlittleMcNilsen Those corporations employ a lot of people. Don't you want money? We all need money to live these days but stealing it is not the way to go about it. Make your own money, it's the way of the world. It's the best system we know of.
@LinkKaiba Exactly, Sony allowed the wedding video instead of blocking it to get fucking money. Yet when an average YouTuber tries to upload a video (that won't get much views) with copyright material on it, they block it.
Because copyright is evil. Pure evil. Corporations...the name sickens me...use it to get their hands on the one thing more evil than themselves....money! Money, causing all of the world's troubles since the dawn of time! They want to bathe in it, and absorb the dark, evil powers within, to make themselves equally as evil. Maybe even absorb excess amounts, to make themselves even more evil.
Ok so why did one of my own songs i made on my mixcraft music mixer that i own and used ONLY my music loops i OWN and MADE myself get removed due to copyright when its only OWNER is ME ..i did NOT use any part of any copyrighted song. And the video to it was us dancing so clearly no copyright infringement there ether !
I usually don't care for a lisp but in a presentation made for thousands of people there has to be another person to do this.
Don't get me wrong i just think that there are requirements for this as there are for any other job and having an annoying voice is one of the worst things a presenter could have.
give us tag's subscription back! I subscribed a lot of them and some in other languages like Japanese and Russian characters. How do you expect to type them one by one in search field and change the results to the newest? That's sick.
DRM legislation being passed in some countries are quite scary. It seems to be dictated by big corporations who are only interested in limiting content to deny their competition to re-sell or creatively re-develop concepts. Thus limiting the amount of exposure the artists could have gotten with Fair usage DRM. Producing & developing talent does take money & if content is affordable, non restrictive the masses will buy. Corporations should'nt take away freedom of expression!
This fucken bitch shes a lieing whore they copyright everyfucking video you do no matter what. this is bulshit i got my fucking channel deleted for "Copyright" you can't do shit with youtube ever since google bought it, its been fucking gay as hell everything is copyright there a bunch of dumb ass douche bags
yea well Youtube screwed me over, I saw the Nike "Ennio Morricone" campaign and had the song on a CD I bought years ago and uploaded a video featuring the full length song and it got 3 million views - iTunes then co-oped the song and featured it for download at their store and then I got slapped with a copyright violation and my account deleted. I'm sure iTunes would have started carrying the song because that was a very popular Nike ad, but my 3 million views on my video wasn't chump change
@taender no because no americans give a fuck about soccer until the world cup but what is it supposed to do if its a soccer ball? it just is very loud and annoying
@PS3NitroLambo its those fucking horns they audience is constantly blowing, the vuvuzelas.its become somewhat of a meme for no reason in particular.i want to murder the bastard who invented it in the first place.
im always wondering, is all those censorship on copyrighted material necessary?
if people want the song, for example, they are going to get it one way or another. either through bit torrent or dc+ or other websites. and if the artist dont sell album, is not because of piracy, is because their music suck and nowadays people are just exposed to quicker, better materials all the time.
She is a horrible public speaker, she keeps using the 'pause so the audience ponders your last words' but she spams it at the worst times......someone get her off stage.
In addition to all of the idiots reposting other people's content and videos of their cats, YT has a lot of talented young artists(singers, filmmakers, etc) who are not backed by large corporations. How do they register their stuff in the Content ID System?
Geesh I wish human beings had as many rights and abilities to enact those rights as companies do, why isnt a system like this made for lawmakers so we dont have to deal with corporate lobbied changes and or laws that encroach on our human rights.
@Fulcanelliii actually the civil rights acts of the 50s are what gave corporations all the rights of a person. as soon as the law was enacted to protect minorities, corporations made a case to the supreme court that corporations were persons that needed protecting as well. and they have subsequently called upon that law more than 5x as much as any actual person has sence it was enacted.
According to court judgments, anyone can you portions of any copyrighted material for commentary purposes. Youtube was banning all Olympic videos citing the Copyright act, however, if they took the time to dig deeper they would have found that you have the right by law to show clips of copyrighted material.
I cannot help but resent her analogy when she talks about youtube and refers to it as an 'ecosystem', which would imply natural evolution and growth (also bottom up). In reality there is no balance as people are prohibited from uploading on very arbitrary terms catering mainly top down to the whims of a few huge corporations who 'own' the copyrights.
It sounds too much like polished up propaganda, at which TED too often excels, if not, at least certain speakers they feature on their channel.
She made the point. Copyrights mostly owned by corporations and coping help them making the profit. So, to save The Planet from corporations simply obey copyrights! Stop copying and the creepy world of drugged up celebrities, associated problems of overconsumption, pollution, carbon emotions, drug addiction, mind control and health will be solved! Stop copying them. Copyrighted means – made to kill.
This gives a rather false picture. It implies that the user can upload copyright matter and YT will sort it out. Thats not the case at all. Their TOS prohibit uploading copyright music - and the wedding video would have been covered by those terms.
In practice the result of uploading copyright matter is arbitary and changeable, it may be tolerated or the user's account may be deleted, there is no way for the user to know what the consequences of his action will be.
@deepinthewoods You are missing the point: they act in that way because they are essentially forced by copyright laws.
The bright side is they now are trying to publicize how to be overprotective about a copyright may not be the smartest thing to do, and I appreciate that.
Quote: "The bright side is they now are trying to publicize how to be overprotective about a copyright may not be the smartest thing to do."
---
Sad thing is, is that WMG will most likely try to revolt against the people doing so. And hopefully fail so badly that they will be forced to go out of business, and the reign of muted videos will finally come to an end....or at least a big chunk of it.
By law you are permitted to air copyrighted material in part in a commentary. The problem is that the general public is easily confused as to what "commentary" and "excerpt" means. The Olympics were completely banned on Youtube do to outright threats by the IOC and even though most would argue it is within your rights to air portions of those events, Youtube just didnt want to chance it.
@deepinthewoods soon everyone will have a "fake" channel just to test the video if it will pass or not. After a month or so it will be removed and upload to the "clean" channel :)
@deepinthewoods Doesn't matter if you're making money or not from the video, it's still theft whether you like it or not and you can end up in court if it's pursued and you will lose without a doubt! Damages could be crippling at least for anyone. Think carefully about it. If you get a warning from YouTube it's best just to delete the video in question, don't fight it. Definitely not worth it!
This system isn't as perfect as she is claiming. Ask the amateur musician fretkiller about how he lost his account for simply singing the song over the rainbow.
The only copyright owners that would take large hits from things like this are probably actually being helped by the exposure. Plus let's be honest, it's not about the creative persons; it's about the managers, distributors, and record companies, etc.
The amount of money spent on just developing this detection system, plus the hardware to run it on such scale, could probably have payed all infringements that would have been made so far on youtube without it.
Add maintaining this monster, and you could probably even cover all that were to come.
While the task is technically very interesting, this was a lot of money spent for a bad cause, and on the wrong end. What a pity.
The worst think of copyrighter is the YouTube blocking sistem by coutry, it's so stupid when you are in Portugal and can't see for eg. one video of WMG!!!
Or.. yes we can see all the contents of WMG, but we have more work than just click on the link, before I need to use some proxy address!
So what's the point of do this type of rights YouTube?
@sapperbloggs Yes STILL you are parroting the 'official' version. Yes its "my opinion" but I would also stress that its pretty fuckin obvious for someone with a reasonable level of awareness that was I laid out is the truth. If the 'official' version was fair and true then America wouldn't be on the verge of a revolution would it? America is being suffocated by Fascism.
@sapperbloggs No , you said it was my "opinion" that legislation has been passed, I corrected that and said it was a fact . It is, the legislation is/has been passed that can imprision any us citizen indefinitely for no reason other than being a suspect terrorist.
Whats not fact is that truthers/tea party will be routinely treated as terrorists, although some have been already. But yes as time passes this will increase ( thats my prediction)
@sapperbloggs Well already the media (cont rolled by the government) have demonised many people saying they are terrorists so that phase has already began. Now,as time will tell I STRONGLY suspect ( because I have common sense) that we are going to see more and more INNOCENT people classed as terrorists AND severe action will be take against them in the name of protecting national security.
And again, you dont live in the real world. The constitution is being violated on a daily basis ALREADY.
@sapperbloggs You insinuated it quite blatantly. Yes some of what I said was opinion but we agree that the legislation is there which would make what I said possible. And not only will I unfortunately be proved right. Already people who have committed no crimes are being labelled terrorists and could be imprisoned indefinitely without no due process thats totally unconstitutional, it illegal.
I haven't made up my mind. I just have this moron thing that I do its called "thinking for myself"
It's not Youtube that wants to take your videos, but instead its the companies that CLAIM the right to types of media... Youtube is only doing what it is supposed to do... if Youtube didnt start to do this then it would be sued for piracy and then close down... Give youtube a break, it's trying as hard as it can to stay alive and keep freedom of expression alive through them... if it weren't for greedy companies then Youtube wouldn't be this way
Ye great and all Margaret, but I think you shouldn't compomise that much with the copyright owning companies. I think fighting back will speed things up more. Forcing them to either accept the web and start using it in their benefit without killing user's or even 'illegal' content. They'll probably make more money that way anyhow. The copyright environment needs change. Just let them sue Youtube / Google. If YT get's banned, just let people get angry, and change will be :)
@BrokenBjartur Well there we go another mis represention of my words. I NEVER SAID THAT REPEATING AN OPINION MADE IT FACT!
And this is the thing with you, when it comes to hard evidence you just flat out deny that its credible evidence. Well, you could be genuine but I've been in this situation so many times before thats why its pointless dialoging with debunkers. Because you dont give a shit about the truth . Its just all an exercise for your ego's
I hate people like this woman. They over complicate things way, way to much.
There's copyright holders that don't like there shit being sent out. Then they have a cry, Youtube tries to cheer them up. That is all... fucking hell.
@sapperbloggs OK, im really starting to repeat myself here, we agree on the legislation. My point is that this legislation can and HAS been manipulated to imprison ANYBODY the government so wishes. I provided a real life example of this - "you are change" member. You disagree about that.
And...just because I use a news source for convenience doesn't automatically mean that I get all my info from new sources.
@sapperbloggs Its not a "belief" I live in current day reality whereas you dont give a shit about what reality you live in just that you get a chance to self righteously parrot the 'official' version of reality.
Ive given you proof that legislation has been passed that can imprison any American, indefinitely without trial. You think this is no threat to any Us citizen unless they are specifically conspiring to be a terrorist. YOUR WRONG! You just dont 'get it' do you?
@sapperbloggs Look mate all your doing is taking on the role of unpaid employee of the department of home security. We all know full well how they intend to use this legislation. This is hard to get across when you are so unaware of how the MSM plays a part in the role of demonzing people.
In short, Guantanimo bay is coming to the US in the form of FEMA camps
you enable infringement by allowing any video with copyrighted material to be uploaded. it is this simple. if you were true to protecting copyright you wouldn't allow any online but viewership/ad dollars would TANK . here's how your policy would work in the real world. you & i are pulled over for driving through a red light at the same time. we each have clean driving records. officer let's me go, but gives you a ticket. that's fair. right?

@MarkArandjus why not just appeal the content ID block and get your video restored?
HappyCabbie 11 months ago
@HappyCabbie HappyCabbie, are you following me around? :D
Well anyway, me and AndyRehfeldt do that block appeal with other videos to restore them, but this one gets deleted straight up, no block or anything, just BAM - deleted and immediately deleted on re-upload. I wanted to write to Range Road Music, but I can't seem to find a website or anything :S
MarkArandjus 11 months ago
@MarkArandjus have you filed a DMCA counternotice?
HappyCabbie 11 months ago
@HappyCabbie Nah, at that point the damage had been done and Andy's channel is in enough danger of being shut down for using original vocal tracks in his arrangements as is so we didn't want to bring more attention to it, besides we gave it to people to mirror it a bunch of times, so as long as it's on the internet making people laugh it's okay :)

I'm sure iTunes would have started carrying the song because that was a very popular Nike ad, but my 3 million views on my video wasn't chump change

im always wondering, is all those censorship on copyrighted material necessary?
if people want the song, for example, they are going to get it one way or another. either through bit torrent or dc+ or other websites. and if the artist dont sell album, is not because of piracy, is because their music suck and nowadays people are just exposed to quicker, better materials all the time.

Geesh I wish human beings had as many rights and abilities to enact those rights as companies do, why isnt a system like this made for lawmakers so we dont have to deal with corporate lobbied changes and or laws that encroach on our human rights.
Fulcanelliii 1 year ago 3
@Fulcanelliii actually the civil rights acts of the 50s are what gave corporations all the rights of a person. as soon as the law was enacted to protect minorities, corporations made a case to the supreme court that corporations were persons that needed protecting as well. and they have subsequently called upon that law more than 5x as much as any actual person has sence it was enacted.
smkymcnugget420 1 year ago
According to court judgments, anyone can you portions of any copyrighted material for commentary purposes. Youtube was banning all Olympic videos citing the Copyright act, however, if they took the time to dig deeper they would have found that you have the right by law to show clips of copyrighted material.

MOSSUPTHEHERO 1 year ago
I cannot help but resent her analogy when she talks about youtube and refers to it as an 'ecosystem', which would imply natural evolution and growth (also bottom up). In reality there is no balance as people are prohibited from uploading on very arbitrary terms catering mainly top down to the whims of a few huge corporations who 'own' the copyrights.
It sounds too much like polished up propaganda, at which TED too often excels, if not, at least certain speakers they feature on their channel.
Geinponempie 1 year ago

It's because their minds don't work like that. They think in terms of dick waving displays of power, and revenge.
Think of drug laws as an example. It's the 60s, the godless alternative lifestyles and leftist thinkers were rising. So you kick them in the teeth.

If the 'official' version was fair and true then America wouldn't be on the verge of a revolution would it? America is being suffocated by Fascism.
1madaboutguitar 1 year ago
@sapperbloggs No , you said it was my "opinion" that legislation has been passed, I corrected that and said it was a fact . It is, the legislation is/has been passed that can imprision any us citizen indefinitely for no reason other than being a suspect terrorist.
Whats not fact is that truthers/tea party will be routinely treated as terrorists, although some have been already. But yes as time passes this will increase ( thats my prediction)
1madaboutguitar 1 year ago
@sapperbloggs Well already the media (cont rolled by the government) have demonised many people saying they are terrorists so that phase has already began. Now,as time will tell I STRONGLY suspect ( because I have common sense) that we are going to see more and more INNOCENT people classed as terrorists AND severe action will be take against them in the name of protecting national security.
And again, you dont live in the real world. The constitution is being violated on a daily basis ALREADY.
1madaboutguitar 1 year ago
@sapperbloggs You insinuated it quite blatantly. Yes some of what I said was opinion but we agree that the legislation is there which would make what I said possible. Ye great and all Margaret, but I think you shouldn't compomise that much with the copyright owning companies. I think fighting back will speed things up more.
