  • My, Lord......Some vocal performances almost render you speechless....I have tears in my eyes and goose bumps right now! She really should have recorded this as a single. I had millions of dollars, or lucky enough to hit the Lotto. I would buy the rights to this performance, have it digitally revamped and give it to Ms. Holliday, so she could put it on her next album. This woman is a force of nature!!

  • Flowin' through my body as only Jennifer could.... no one comes even close to her class....

  • This is fantastic! I can't believe I've never seen this before.

  • Great!!!

  • she did that OMG she can be on america got talent

  • @Jhynita Townsend

  • Spectacular! The best performance of a song I have ever seen!

  • Comment removed

  • She made this song a BROADWAY PEFORMANCE>>>.. she totally made it BLACK!!!!!

  • I remember her very well now....her talent still sticks out after hearing modern artists. A gift like that will never get old. She's great!!!

  • I think this is the most amazing performance of a song i have ever heard. I saw it in 84 & am so glad it's here. Some things are timeless. Bravo!

  • I can listen to Jennifer sing and enjoy it, but I cannot watch her sing. Embarrassing. The affected tics and twitches and gospel jaw and the whole spastic thing . . . well . . . FUCKING weird and freaky.

  • @Mikeymcguy i know exactly what you mean, but these tics are what make a real soulful singer...that shows you how deeply she understands and feels what she sings...

  • @moormello No, those tics are affected and an extremely bad habit. If a singer pictures and feels deep down in his or her soul what he or she is singing about, he or she need not move at all. The perceiver will feel the vibes of what the singer is feeling and pick up on it, feeling the song with the singer. Someone should have stopped her from doing that decades ago. Shame on the person responsible for praising her spasms to begin with. She looks like a freak.

  • @Mikeymcguy you must not be a soul singer yourself...a real good "soul" singer feels and shows their emotions and an understanding audience knows what its about....she's not a classical singer. they are the singers with blank stares....

  • @moormello You are absolutly RIGHT!!!! Why singers dont show expressions anymore!!! If they cant dance or really blow, they are BOARING!!!!!!! I wish they show some damn facial expressions!!!! And stop trying to be so damn cute!!!! Maybe when they perform live they would sound better!!!!!

  • @Desmaification That is one of the things I love about Ms. Holliday she is not afraid to let her emotions flow freely. Have you heard of Rachelle Ferrelle......that woman can sing paint on and off a wall and her facial expressions are one of a kind.

  • NO ONE LIKE HER. ARETHA, PATTI, GLADYS NON of the old girls can do what this woman does. She IS soullllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!

  • OMG. She slayed this. I remember when this came on. And I loved/ love Barbara's version, had seen the movie and everything. But I also loved this performance, so different. The hallmark of a great song and a great singer.

  • Bravo Jennifer. You better work honey! I met this great soul and I was honored.

  • One of the best performances of any song ever performed on TV. Ranks right up there with Judy, IMHO. Thank you so much for posting this.

  • Greatest singer on the planet, Jennifer Holliday gets inside "The Way He Makes Me Feel" turning this gem in to a masterpiece...music industry totally out of it not getting behind this once in a lifetime awesome talent...Bravo Jennifer and please come to LA again soon!

  • @bradly2007 No, Jennifer Holliday is NOT the greatest singer on the planet. I don't know of any GREATEST singers. Those fucking tics and spasms destroy her performances. She needs to be slapped out of that habit.

  • yes yes yes yes that is soul

  • @pussytracy no No NO, that is just outrageously embarrassing. Soul does not include looking like you're having seizures.

  • @Mikeymcguy You are the freak here for thinking singing has anything to do with how the singer looks while singing. If you like pretty then stick to a singer who shares your view, but Jennifer is one who thinks best to show everything with her face and she is not the only soul singer who does it. In fact many soul singers of the past do it so you are not paying attention or maybe Jennifer seems to have outdone Barbra here so you are trying to bitch her by criticizing her facial expressions?

  • Jennifer Holiday and Jennifer Hudson are both good singers but Jennifer Holiday voice is a little more trained and stronger than Hudsons voice. We have a lot of great singers in the Black Church go somtimes and you will find out for yourself.

  • @geraldsurratt I agree with you,Holliday has a soul like none other and I still prefer her voice and song in 'And I Am Telling You" Hudson is my new diva though. I think those in the Churches are even better.

  • I remember when this was on TV. It still has the same impact it had in 1984! Maybe the most amazing performance of a song I have ever heard! Thanks for posting.

  • @jimmylee....the uh=um at the end of the sylablles were/are a part of her trademark...outstanding vocal performance as usual.

  • Maravilhoso momento do Oscar de 1984 pena que a qualidade seja ruim mas a interpretação de Jennifer Holiday e simplesmente maravilhosa

  • I recorded ths on my Beta video in stereo in 1985 (great quality) but loaned it out never to see it until now Just as great as I remember it then. Neve thought I see this again It the same when Ray Charles would his rendition of a song it becomes the standard

  • Jennifer Holiday is a force of nature. She is not always given her due. She can sing her behind off. She is classy, elegant, sophisticated, beautiful and talented. They just do not make singers like her anymore.

  • I thinks she sang it well. Just not fond of the "uh' sound she tends to make at then end of a lot of the lines (ie. "feel-uh"). I do prefer Barbra's version though.

  • unbelievable! She is amazing!

  • Good that Holliday has been/is, Hudson is even better/greater.

  • @mannail888 you mean one dimensional voice Hudson? pls.. her voice get's boring after 2 songs

  • As much as I'd loved Barbra Streisand's original version of this song...this was an amazing soulful version of this song performed by Jennifer Holiday! Even the costume was a nice touch and a great tribute to "Yentl" I am simply blown away! Nicely done!!!

  • Da'um miss thang sho did sung sang da hell outta dat one! Mmm mmmmm (((((double snaps!!))))))

  • LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. Thank you, Jennifer. (And miss you, Johnny!)

  • her voice brings tears to my eyes

  • MY FAVORITE AND ALL TIMrE singer........name one singer that has the skills and feelings that Jennifer expresses........NOT ONE!!!!!

  • Barbra loved Holliday... Miss Holliday said she saw her many times in Dreamgirls... she probably asked her to do this...

I don't agree with those who say she lost her voice when she got thinner. She still has it!

  • @rlee1976 Anyone who said that has lost their hearing. JHolliday STILL has her voice fully intact!

  • Flawless!!!!!!!!

  • I just got in from seeing Miss Holiday in concert this evening, she is still amazing - but I wish she would have done this song - I love her rendition of it. However it was a great concert.

  • OMG! speechless. I guess she really does like the way he makes her feel and he must me making her feel a lil better than he makes striesand feel.

  • @hotrodindalou lol funny but in all honestly your words is the best way to compare jennifer's rendition with barbra's. is it true that after this performance, barbra has refused to sing this song or is that myth?

  • @quiddy someone said that and we can surely understand why...this should be the next new single!!!!!

  • I often visit You Tube specifically for this clip. THANKS A MILLION StormyB. JH is one of my all-time favorite artists and her interpretation of this hauntingly beautiful... I feel it in my soul everytime. When I need to "feel" something musically, I know I can come to this and get just what I need. JH, you are a national (earthly even) TREASURE!

  • she better sing

  • She gave this song such new meaning to me. I love Bab's version, and I was shocked that Jennifer worked this song so well. It shows here versatility as as vocalist. No belting. Just moving, emotion filled sangin'.

  • i love jennifer she is one of the best but barb kills this

  • Comment removed

  • @QuentinCortez i did not say barb sang it better.i said she killed it,and she did.they are both awesome.grow up

  • @chochief my bad

  • @QuentinCortez no probs.i love jen too

  • @chochief

  • She owned this song...

  • The Best rendition of this song i have ever heard gon head Ms. Holliday

  • she blows Barb out of the water

  • Comment removed

  • @tt247jer No, she does not blow Barbra Streisand out of the water.

  • @Mikeymcguy of course she does.....she made. jthis her own.......u cant put Barbara next to Jennifer!!!

  • omg she brought so much dept to this song. She,s just amazing...

  • The testament of a great song is that it lends itself to a variety of styles. Both Streisand and Holiday do a great job with this song even though both are vastly different singers.

  • can somebody please post her version of goodmorning heartache.. she killed that song

  • @dare57

    She performed that song ? ! ? ! ? !

  • hey aalakfan, Im a Native Aboriginal Australian with dark skin and very far from having white ears. I still think it starts out nicely but she totally turns it into a trainwreck. Im allowed to have my opinion so dont assume people are one race or another

  • @hardsam68 really? it was actually the opposite for me! lol i couldn't get with the extraneous sounds signature to Ms. Holiday's singing throughout the song lol (they kind of grew on me later), but how she did it in the end made me love it.....strong and dramatic. Its all a matter of personal taste. ^_^ Barbara is excellent too! Her soft angelic voice made her song a great version as well.

  • Sheer brilliance

  • Sooooooooooooo good.....thats it.....nobody cant compete with this one!!!!!!!!!!

  • Impeccable. With such a powerful instrument, it's amazing to me how she can also make her voice so sweet and controlled, as in the beginning of this song and several points throughout. I once saw JH at Blues Alley in DC where her show was comprised of ALL STANDARDS (Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, etc.). She treated each song with such tender respect, care and style... The arrangements were "sickening" (that's a good thing btw).

  • Greatness of voice, of Expression and Delivery rise like a Phoenix, leaving us in shivers, as our listening overcomes a 26-year-old video and audio, of a live performance in a hall with weak acoustics, whose quality leaves oh so much to be desired. And still she draws a standing ovation.

Imagine if she had done this as a digitized performance in a studio.

  • Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @QuentinCortez I listened to Barbara's version.....she ain't got nothing on Jennifer

  • I've been living on this performance more than year.. and I need no food, no water just Jennifer's voice... :)

  • Love this version, Jennifer owned it.

  • wonderful unique sensational - one of the geat voices - in one line with aretha !

  • @gomiat .i totally agree with you.One of the very few who sounds alot like Aretha, and has the ability.

  • She really made this her own.......Great renedition of Barbara's song...I've neevr heard Jennifer botch anything up,,,NEVER!!!!

  • THE INCOMPARABLE>>>>>>>>>>Jennifer Holiday!!!!!!

  • hardsam68 sorry to disappoint you but babs praised this performance. she loved it so much that she vowed never to sing it again she said jennifer owned that song . i'm glad she changed her mind .

  • The sadness and longing in the song really suits her voice. And look at her face. She looks like she's 18. I really wish she'd make a comeback.

  • Wow to say this is "Awful"? Really?? Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, if not, we'd all be dressed alike and driving the same cars.. At least I am open minded enough to love both versions of this song. Barbras' original version and Jennifers' "interpretation" done at Barbras' request to perform it! "Cringe"?? She asked Jennifer Holiday to sing it!!

  • @hardsam68: As a matter of fact Barbara loved it, and told Jennifer so personally. You are clearly white, with white ears. Not that either is bad, people have different taste and perspectives. Yet,that you can't see that this young lady (in her 20's then) is a freaking genius with perfect pitch is a blind spot.

  • Great singer but the wrong choice. This has to be sung without all the vocal gymnastics. Barbra must have been at home cringeing

  • Brilliant! I remember singing this on the original night..and got goosebumps. I still get them. Holliday did Streisand proud! She always does herself proud! Go Jenn!

  • I like the way Jennifer makes me feel ever sice I first saw her in Dreamgirls in 1981..........God I'm showing my age. Actually Jennifer and I are 2 months apart in age.

  • A taste of brilliance...

  • to all you haters out their! fuck off!!!

  • Great performance. I love Jennifer .

  • One listen at 15 and im already in love

May the good lord bless you Ms Holliday-truly my favourite artist-sadly so criminally underrated

    Great vid-5*****

  • This is a moment in history that I'll never forget! It was almost as wonderful as seeing Ms. Holliday on The Tony Award singing before she won the Tony for HER ROLE of Effie in Dreamgirls.

The person, obviously not familiar with song styling or tonal dynamics and theatrical deliverance really should get a life. You obviously are very boring and miserable. I hope you at least go out and get a hobby after today.

  • She had just won the TONY and a Grammy.....She made Streisand proud...

  • Gone baby !!!!!!!! Sang That song!!!!!

  • @victate LMAO!!!!

  • @DavidRobertLaman

She's not as bad now. Her "uhs" at the end of alot of phares were a result of extreme weight. She's between 5'2" and 5'4" and at this time, weighed close to 300 lbs. Had a hard time breathing.

  • DAVIDROBERTALAWOMAN youre so jaded you unhappy homo

  • This is one of my favorite performances by JH :) - u go girl! - please if someone can post a better recording? - is there some way?

  • Sensational!! I love it,, I have chills! Jennifer Holliday one of the greatest singers ever!

  • OMG!!!!!!...IAM SPEECH-LESS!!..did any one see her face..u can tell the words were coming from the heart.

  • This is a beautiful song and I just love Barbra's original version! ...but Jennifer gives me chills.. I wish she would record this.

  • amazing!!!

  • Phenominal...

  • Notice that Miss Streisand never sang this again after this performance. Jennifer took over and COMPLETELY made this her song now. Babs is OWNED!!!!!!!!!

  • I remember reading that Barbra asked Jennifer to sing this on the awards show and also asked Donna Summer to sing her other nominated song. Both were wonderful.

  • @intre94 rubbish, its the academy who decides who sings the songs on the Oscars, not requests by people like Streisand. She had NOTHING to do with it....Its probably the worst performance ever on the Oscars. Holiday stinks

  • Absolutely amazing! Barbra is IMO such a Once in a Lifetime Talent, I love "Yentl" & all of Bab's Artistry. I've always been blown away by Jennifer Holliday but attempting to do a song SO connected to a Legendary Performer, well I just thought I HAVE to hear this. My opinion is WOW, she managed to make it her own. Even J H, I thought might not be able to do this song justice. I was so wrong, BRAVO!! AMAZING INTERPRETATION! Barbra Streisand and Jennifer Holliday give me such joy! Thanks 4 posting

  • it goes to show all that this voice is not to be reckon with...some says she screams...others just mocks the way she looks when she sings...but let the truth be said...even this video is in low quality and the voice is in high quality...so imagine if we were to hear this in high quality video...her delivery...her tone...her enunciation...is just superb...

  • last yr there was a vidoe of this performance that was a fantastic quality right here on youtube but it's been removed. I was very sad. It was superb

  • Yes the video was up for a couple of years and now they have decided to remove it for copyright infringment. Now, all we have is this crappy copy to watch. It's to bad because this is one of the best perfomances ever. Maybe someone else will post a better quality.

  • i love this song on her i love it i cant stop watching it

  • Comment removed

  • actually Barbara said that she would never sing this tune ever again after seeing and hearing jennifer version. In an interview she stated that if she had a voice like jennifer's that's the way she would've put it on the soundtrack. Barbara said that she loved jennifer's version so much that she could not sing it again. thank god she changed her mind .

  • really? where can we find that interview, thats incredible. wow

  • Bummer, what happened to the quality version that was here? This is awful. It's unimaginable that anyone could outsing Streisand on one of her own songs, but in my opionion Jennifer pulls it off.

  • Seriously speaking: I can remember as a toddler, long before I understood what is soul music, this woman's voice captured my attention. I didn't understand until long after, but I also realised how vast a talent she is to really touch the soul of a sweet angelic child as I were. I love Jennifer straight to heaven!

  • I cannot get enough of this vocal in my adulthood. Holliday may be an acquired taste vocally but I have come to adore that talent. Soul, Broadway or R & B. It makes me FEEL!

  • Thank you so much for posting this! It was up then gone! I wish I could download an audio version!!

  • Wow, such a unique voice

  • STORMYB, I cannot thank you enough for posting this!! I found another version 1-2years ago and immediately Favorited it, then sadly it was gone. I am a HUGE Barbra S. Fan and I just came across it and was BLOWN AWAY! Very few people are blessed w/this kind of talent and I feel so fortunate to be alive at this time and to be able to have these amazing Singers/Performers speak to my heart. So, for you to bring this back to us who love these Women is am awesome gift. And I Thank You!! Mark

  • No thanks..I just don't like the inflections in her voice..they detract and distract from the beauty of the lyrics..though I understand there are people who consider these inflections a sign of emotion and depth in a song..especially since these types of inflections are common with black gospel singers. But all those "uhs" at the end of sentences just sound awful here.

I'll stick with the original version..no one can sing it better than the person who originated the song..Ms. Barbra Streisand.

  • My goodness! I've been looking for this version. Thank you for this! WOW!!!!!

  • I love Yentil!!!!! It's my all time favorite movie!!!! :-D This is such an awesome song. Actually, ALL of the songs from this movie are awesome!!! Barbara did her thang in this movie. I LOVE IT!!!!!. Jennifer took this song to a different level and now I love both versions!!!! :-D Barbara's version will always be my best favorite though. Kudos to Jennifer for an excellent rendition. Heart felt, soulful. Beautiful!!! :-D

  • In my youth I made fun of her performance. I didn't get it. I like-uh the way-uh he-uh makes-uh me-uh deep breath and in low tones.....BLAST FEEL!

I was an idiot! That performance is exquisite. Soul and GORGEOUS pitch perfect notes!

Sorry Jennifer. I was dead wrong!

  • how could you possibly make fun of that?! she tore into that song...you know barbra had to be mad as hell.

  • encc007 baby! Did you read my ENTIRE post? You sound like a fool.

  • wow, actually i did...if you took it as i meant it, you would've realized i was talking about when you made fun of it in your "youth". i think like in your "youth", you a little too quick on the draw in this one too. smooches!

  • Yeah...jackmacdaddy.....the "I like-uh the way-uh he-uh makes-uh me-uh deep breath and in low tones.....BLAST FEEL!.." was shear conviction and genuine genius! She had to get that out!!! You cant hold conviction like that inside!!! I can relate!! :-)

  • PLEASE read my entire post! I am tired of being misunderstood about this. I think Ms. Holiday is BRILLIANT singing this. Whe I was young and stupid I disliked it. I only included that "impression" to illustrate how stupid I was. Thanks.

  • jackmacdaddy..I initially read your whole post and was ONLY agreeing with you. I completely understood from the onset what you were saying. I was adding to what you said by telling you that I understand the uh he-uh makes-uh me-uh deep breath and in low tones.....BLAST FEEL because I most definitely can relate!! Yours is a outstanding post!! :-)

  • I am in awe how Jennifer sings with her heart wide open, so raw and gorgeous feeling this song and making all who listen feel along with her. I would love to see Barbra's reaction to this as Jennifer is singing. Both women do this song justice in their own unique way. This original version with orchestration is the best one out there. The jazzy version of this song misses the soul of the song. thanks for posting. what a gem.

  • I LOVE that note at 3:49.....she is amazing...

  • Jennifer Holliday is the greatest ever. Sang girl, SANG!

  • Well once again it proves the point that there are great singers and then there is everyone else. It is beautifully song but also beautifully conceived. I ask you how many times in life have you heard a Streisand song song and all you think about is the person singing it and NOT Streisand. Remarkable!

  • excellent, this is the first time I ever heard anyone but Barbra Streisand perform this song from Yentl. Really good.

  • She's so great!
