folks, read 1st Timothy ch. 4 to see what the apostle Paul says about godliness, doctrine, meditation, teaching. read verse 16 closely. also, read 1 Peter 3:15 and see how the two relate. let's not have quarrels but rather edifying conversations, teaching each other what we know, knowing well what we teach, checking to see if it is God's truth that we speak and teach instead of our own opinion or our own doctrine.
@ObeyTheGospelOrDie - When in Africa, there are areas where people live in mud huts, where there are no cars, no electricity.....a cashless society.....I have met some of the most giving, loving, worshipping Followers of Jesus. the bible says to walk by faith and not by sight. It also says that of faith and hope that love is the most important. how many people know if you walk with your eyes closed your going to bump into a wall. understanding science and understanding pyschology, understanding unity and understanding what seperates, doing nice things for one another and not doing anything makes all the difference.
My desire to know my doctrines and God's Word CORRECTLY and try and ignite discussion with my fellow brothers, so that they may better understand God's plan, is because of
Luke 10:27 - " And he answered, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind..."
Key word being Mind in this instance. We must worship The Lord intellectually. I must say though your clip title isn't right. To say I'm idolising (cont)
The doctrine of Election, Salvation etc and would go to Hell as a result, is wrong. All biblical knowledge is from the Lips of God. Its pride in your knowledge that puffs you up. btw, CALVINIST ROOL! ;-P
"When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power." (1 Corinthians 2:1-5)
You can't drag around spiritual things with the tone of a voice just as animals can't detail their fear of fire with wild shouts. I am sure that we would not differ greatly in agreed upon "doctrine," however, I question whether or not you really understand the players in the game.
Joh 6:38 "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.
Joh 6:39 "This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day.
Joh 6:40 "For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.
I WANT EVERY PROFESSOR TO WORSHIP THE SOVEREIGN GOD AND DO AWAY WITH FREEWILL!
If Theology does not lead to Doxology it is 1. It's not true Theology. 2. It is idol worship. You will be worshipping the knowledge that you obtained for yourself rather than it being the tool for worshipping the One True God!
While it is true that one ought not to become obsessive or idolatrous towards doctrines, other elements in speeches such as this one concern me, hence the following questions. Should I stop being a Baptist, because other Baptists that preceded me are in hell? What do you think about ecumenism? Are you a separatist?
Now, I believe in unity, but in the context of a local church. Thus, if a local church agrees to unify around controversial positions - i.e., eternal security, and being KJBO - the liberal critics are the ones who are being divisive, NOT US. Local churches have the right to kick heretics out (Rom. 16:17-18, Titus 3:10-11 [Tim uses a 'bible' that tells him to reject division not heresy, which would cause him to reject Jesus - see Luke 12:51-53], 2Jn 10-11).
That conversation between the Armenian and the Calvinist was beautiful and humbling and ultimately true., I am not of either denomination but I can hear the words of true men of God when they befall my ears.

"Do not be deceived you will not inherit the Kingdom of God unless you can let go of your pride."
Is that right? I would've thought, rather, that you will not inherit the Kingdom of God unless you have Jesus as your saviour. After all, no one dies completely free of pride and sin. That's why we need a Saviour... we're not saved by either humility or theology.
very true (salvation thru Christ alone) but if u know that ur pride isnt pleasing to God i wouldnt think it very beneficial to hang on to it all the same
calvinism is certainly not my idol; but i am equally adamant that "arminianism" is an evil task master that locks "Christians" in their state of ungodliness. we MUST discern the spirit behind teachings. no daggers... no attack on arminianism for me... rather ESCAPE from it.
I highly disagree that debating theology is bad, debates can make lots of people learn. In fact I became a calvinist by debating calvinists. I guess Conway just meant debating theology is bad as long as you use it to be arrogant and to exalt yourself. If you use debates to proclaim the truth and refute false teachings, than it only could be good.
Although I agree w/some of the stuff Pastor Tim said. I do believe that theology is everything. Praising God and giving Christ the number one attention is theology. Putting Christ before anything is theology. Loving people is theology. Repentance is theology. And yes studying doctrine is theology. I say bad theology is idolatrous because it gives you wrong beliefs about God, like oneness or arian theology.
Wpw!!!!!!!!!!..Pastor Conway this is awesome bro..men build Pride in there Hearts based on arguing doctrine they are trying to show a look at me and what i know mentality rather then a converted surrendered heart to Jesus Christ Yes theology is can def become an Idol....Amen bro
I find it interesting that what I'm seeing in the comments section is that most of the people who have problems with this video are the ones who want to argue theology.
Let's take a look at the Pharisees did, they put the STUDY OF THE SCRIPTURES over the ONE who the scriptures spoke of. Their FRUIT spoke against them that they were not the children of God. It is possible to be a theology genius and be as far as possible from the salvation of God.
I do believe the doctrines of grace are biblical, but I cannot put the study of that doctrine above Jesus Christ, whom that doctrine testifies. It can be idolatry and we must be on guard against it.
To be honest w/you. The pharisees seemed like they didn't put God's Word above God Himself, they seemed to put their traditions above God. This seems more consistent w/what Jesus criticized them about in Mark 7.
You said it "traditional" - this is not about tradition, it is about God's Word. To many people have traditions and not Christ and not biblical truths.
Well, what about them? They searched they scriptures, they did not idolize them and worship the theology over Christ. Tim makes it clear in the video, he is not advocating that we not study and dig in God's Word. Everyday we MUST invest time into doing such.
If I am to be labeled a Theological Idol Worshiper because I insist that people believe that Jesus Christ actually obtained salvation for all that He bled for, then you need to prove why semi-Pelagianism is not a heresy! Because if it isn't 100% grace (nothing in the creature that is determinative), then salvation is what synergism/semi-Pelagianism claims! There is just no other coherent position that one can take. Wesley affirmed some true things, but his gospel made no logical sense in total.
Particular Redemption matters much more than what people think. Because it makes no logical sense for Wesley to trust in Christ alone when the death of Christ on behalf of each particular sinner doesn't absolutely save each particular sinner (for whom Christ was sacrificed for). This is easy (not advanced at all) to understand. Therefore, I must conclude that Wesley was either a complete idiot (which he wasn't) or that he was in rebellion toward God on this crucial aspect of the work of Christ!
I presume your a Calvinist my friend. but here's a wonderful thing for you to ponder. is it not that even if there's only one soul on earth, every ounce of Christ's blood must still be shed? so even if there are ten or ten thousands of souls, Christ's blood is sufficient. did He not even die for false teachers? 2Pet2.1
if your doctrines are founded on LOGIC than scriptures, then i wouldn't wonder why you're having such claims.
2 Pet 2:1 has nothing to do with Christ dying for false-teachers. Because if He did, then Christ's death didn't do them any ETERNAL good. And, if I am going to trust in the death of Christ, then I need to believe that it ALONE is the direct/automatic cause of my being given eternal life (the new birth) by the Holy Spirit. Spiritually dead people must be made alive first (before any saving faith is even possible). And this is not a small theological detail! In fact it is a MAJOR FUNDAMENTAL.
John 1.12-13 says, Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (those who believed, they are born again or Calvinistically spaking, they are "regenerated").
If being a CHILD OF GOD = BORN AGAIN, then it is clear from this verse that believing precedes being born again or regeneration.
It does not say "He gave you the right to become a child of God so that you can receive Him and believe in His name." NO!
friend, I am not totally against your doctrine of Calvinism, only with the minor details. regeneration before faith? C'mon, the Bible teaches clearly that it is by faith that one is regenerated, i know you might give an illustration of a corpse... but i would rather want to read a verse from the Bible.
a spiritually dead person is not equal with a physically dead one, death in the Bible is not annihilation but separation my friend.
That is my point... it is NOT a small theological detail.
We have understood different gospels. You say you did the believing and became born-again. I say I became born-again and this explains my believing. We both agree one must believe and place their faith in Jesus Christ to be saved. But, you have people dead in sin and in active rebellion towards God JUST DECIDING to change sides in the war against God. I have people (like Paul) getting born-again WHILE IN REBELLION toward God.
i gave you verses to point to you that faith comes first and not regeneration, i really don't know why you're exchanging some verses which doesn't really disregard with the verses i gave you. it doesn't even explain "regeneration before faith"... the doctrine that you dearly hold.
however, since you've already quoted John 6:37, 6:44, which I already presume you would and in fact you did... I encourage you not to stop there but keep going. read further my friend.
I did not just make up my own statements and explanations... i gave you scriptures from which my beliefs are derived. I inductively expound them you, you only latch on verses that supports your claim. balance it my friend. consider the entire counsel (WORD) of God and not just some.
anyways, we shouldn't argue further. Tim just nailed it right. :)
I don't even think we are brothers in Christ at this point (you and me). And the fact the Tim Conway can't see that two camps (Calvinism v. Arminianism) don't even come close to foundational agreement is truly amazing.
I know all the verses back and forth. And I have thoroughly reviewed them. And I think it is SILLY that you think you could just quote a few verses like that... and me say OH OF COURSE... Like C.H. Spurgeon and John Piper never read those verses before. SILLY SILLY SILLY :(
37all that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away 39And this is the will of Him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that the He has given me, but raise them up at the last day44No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. (NIV)
(Further reading)
45 they will be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me 47I tell you the truth,
Those whom the Father gives to the Son are those who? - Those that LISTEN and LEARN from Him. And after listening and learning from the Father, they what? Go to Jesus. And who attains everlasting life? Those WHO BELIEVE.
27All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. (Please continue reading and dont just stop here so we can see the full context of what the scripture is saying.) 28 come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (NIV)
Those whom the Son chooses are those who? who COME TO ME. Scripture says that Christ is inviting who? - ALL WHO LABOR AND HEAVY LADEN. All the lost labor and are heavily laden.
Thank you for this video. We need the grace of the doctrines as well as the doctrines of grace. George Müller could write: As to the effect which my belief in these doctrines had on me, I am constrained to state, for God's glory, that though I am still exceedingly weak, and by no means so dead to the lusts of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, as I might and as I ought to be, yet, by the grace of God, I have walked more closely with Him since that period.
Doctrines of grace typically refers to "reformed theology" or Calvinistic theology. Which is historical GOOD true theology, its just dangerous because it can be taken to far easily.
Just like all truth.
You can take pride in knowing the truth and take it to far.
Reformed theology is good and true, but its not the end and goal of our faith, Jesus is.
Good video and topic. I think it is a very fine line that we as Christians in our walk to obtain TOO much theology and NOT enough theology in our walk with Christ. We must walk the line.
And as Pastor Tim says, the doctrines of grace should humble us and keep us humbled. If the doctrines of grace start to make us prideful, we should repent.
I agree, but we have to be careful ... because it seems that these days the danger is not so much too much theology but more likely not enough theology in most churches. We also need to be careful to not give the impression that theology is not important (I am pretty sure some will use this to justify bad theology)
Greetings! in the name of the Lord Jesus who is God most High.
Doctrine divides particularly those whom expouse beliefs that contradict the sacred word of God. Therefore, if we are followers of Christ Jesus and his doctrine then we would seperate from those whom advocate beliefs that are contradictory to the beliefs of Christ Jesus.
May the God of all grace grant unto you all wisdom, grace, and peace always. in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
I do agree with this video for the most part. But I think we should be careful calling the study of God's word idolatry.
1Pe 3:15 commands believers to be ready to make a DEFENSE for the hope that is in us.
As a former Arminian, I know what it's like to be confused and scared. I am so thankful a Calvinist came to me and challenged my beliefs, although it felt like the rug was being pulled out from under me at the time. Now I am forever greatful that God brought him to me and showed me truth.
GLORY BE TO GOD! This is SOOOOOO MUCH CONFIRMATION about issue I spoken on JUST YESTERDAY! I give God glory!!! Let us go back to the ROCK from which we were cut! So many of us get puffed up in our knowledge that we forget THE REASON we know anything is because of the revealing of the Holy Spirit. I have gotten caught up in the mess to and repented, but there are so many caught up. We have to guard against these types of divisions. Often idolatry of knowledge is the cause of many divisions.
For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
I enjoyed watching this, the Charles and Wesley dialogue he shared was nice as well. Theology can indeed become an idol, I'm glad that Pastor Tim Conway dealt with this subject real well. He's really knowledgeable when it comes to answering questions.
As soon as I saw the title, I smiled because I am dealing with this. Especially since I've been introduced to the Reformed theology. I began to realize that the obsession was creeping in.

You cannot love Christ without loving theology. Period.
You cannot worship Christ without theology. Period.
You cannot have Christ without theology. Period.
You cannot know Christ without theology. Period.
False theology may become an Idol for someone, but the truth cannot. For to love the truth is to love God. For God is truth.
Without theology, a person is lost.

It does not say "He gave you the right to become a child of God so that you can receive Him and believe in His name." NO!

23For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
IMPERISHABLE SEED = GODS WORD/GOSPEL. Is it received by faith or not? By faith. Therefore faith is before and leads to regeneration.

friend, I am not totally against your doctrine of Calvinism, only with the minor details. regeneration before faith? C'mon, the Bible teaches clearly that it is by faith that one is regenerated, i know you might give an illustration of a corpse... but i would rather want to read a verse from the Bible.
a spiritually dead person is not equal with a physically dead one, death in the Bible is not annihilation but separation my friend.

Read John 6:37...
All that the Father gives me will come to me
Who is coming? All that the Father gives.
Read John 6:44...
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.
Who can come? All that the Father draws.
What happens to them? They are raised up (go to heaven).
Logically (as Jesus taught)...
The one drawn = the one coming to Him = the one raised up.

TCMAO0 2 years ago
i gave you verses to point to you that faith comes first and not regeneration, i really don't know why you're exchanging some verses which doesn't really disregard with the verses i gave you. it doesn't even explain "regeneration before faith"... the doctrine that you dearly hold.
however, since you've already quoted John 6:37, 6:44, which I already presume you would and in fact you did... I encourage you not to stop there but keep going. read further my friend.

You believe a false-gospel. May God have mercy on your soul!
TCMAO0 2 years ago
I can tell you the same thing as well, but i wouldn't.
I gave you verses with clear explanations but you just locked me up with sentences of accusation.
:)
nailed2save 2 years ago
Why not!? We obviously don't agree on the fundamentals of the gospel... Maybe neither of us are saved!
TCMAO0 2 years ago
that's why I asked you to provide me scriptures.

SILLY SILLY SILLY :(
TCMAO0 2 years ago
ok, if that's what you say.
your witness is really pretty amazing. (I'm just being sarcastic, I'm sorry).
nailed2save 2 years ago
Don't apologize...
You preach your Christ - Who needs man to do something to make salvation effective.
And I'll preach my Christ - Who raise dead people from the grave and they fall in love with Him because of it.
Your Christ can't save anyone by Himself. Mine can!

John6.37-47

Those whom the Father gives to the Son are those who? - Those that LISTEN and LEARN from Him. And after listening and learning from the Father, they what? Go to Jesus. And who attains everlasting life? Those WHO BELIEVE.

27All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him. Thank you for this video. We need the grace of the doctrines as well as the doctrines of grace. George Müller could write: As to the effect which my belief in these doctrines had on me, I am constrained to state, for God's glory, that though I am still exceedingly weak, and by no means so dead to the lusts of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, as I might and as I ought to be, yet, by the grace of God, I have walked more closely with Him since that period.

doctrines of grace ?
what is that ?
ageofpoo 2 years ago

God bless.

Now I am forever greatful that God brought him to me and showed me truth.

we study God's word all the time
where are you getting that from?

The title of this video - "Is Theology your idol?"
I'm not trying to start an argument. I just said WE (collectively) should be careful calling the study of God's word idolatry.
The title of this video was a little surprising to me. Especially coming from a church that actually realizes the importance of theology.

No, its not.. But this statement is.. "Do not be deceived you will not inherit the Kingdom of God unless you can let go of your pride."....
ARE WE TALKING TO BELIEVERS OR UNBELIEVERS! Are we TEACHING OR SHARING THE GOSPEL? Why are confessing Christians constantly threatened with Hell?
My sheep hear My voice, and I known them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, AND THEY WILL NEVER PERISH;..
And Perishing is an ever-present THREAT to those who confess Christ.

I enjoyed watching this, the Charles and Wesley dialogue he shared was nice as well. Theology can indeed become an idol, I'm glad that Pastor Tim Conway dealt with this subject real well. He's really knowledgeable when it comes to answering questions.

CONFIRMATION!!!!!
As soon as I saw the title, I smiled because I am dealing with this. Especially since I've been introduced to the Reformed theology. I began to realize that the obsession was creeping in.
Thanks, Pastor Tim.
