  • nowadays they cycle

  • A former brazilian band named Ira!, which started as a mod revival act has a similar song, including the use of strings orchestration, called Flores Em Você (meaning Flowers on You in english). I'm pretty sure that they made as an homage to The Jam, as they were huge fans.

    Here's the video: watch?v=do3AEehIZAk

  • I met him (bruce foxton) coming out from the back of a gig i went to (from the jam a jam tribute band with bruce foxton in ) i shook his hand , got him to sign my parka and thanked him for smithers-jones! yeah i'm 15 and what? this track is inspiring me to speak my mind and so i say fuck you you aimless 'british' youth who listen to americanised sh*te.

  • I am feeling groovey after that... Fuck my sun tanned boss!

  • Best use of the string in a rock song I can think of.

  • Dedicated to all the traders/bankers who fucked up the global economy, nice 1 guys..cheers, chin chin, bottoms up, wankers...

  • MEEEE

  • what true lyrics as always with the jam, sort of thing that happens to me lol..

  • great band :0)

  • A Weller masterpeice !!!

  • @huskyjerk A Foxton Masterpiece! Bruce wrote it.

  • @maff8466 Sorry for the flub ! A beauty, nonetheless! "Good morning, Smithers-Jones....How's the wife and home?" Those chords are Beethovanesque, you say? Indeed !!!

  • @maff8466 THERE ARE PLENTY MORE FISH IN THE SEA TO FRY

  • It's the B-side to 'When you're young'.

  • In the suggestions column that old man looks like William Hartnell.

  • @GelGsound

Oddly never thought of that , was a random photo i took while haveing a coffe in Earls Court

    Tom

  • The string version truly adds something to this song.

  • This is the original version released on lp Setting Sons, the 'electric' version was released years later on album Snap! I prefer this original one, absolutely great.

  • The story of my working life!

  • If I remember rightly this was the B-side to When You're Young. Please correct me if I'm wrong!

  • I bought this album when it came out (dates me, huh?) and this was my favorite tune on it....made me tear up every time I heard it. Now, years later, still the same effect. GREAT tune. TY so much for posting this version (my favorite)

  • @dressagegal Setting Sons was the first Jam album I bought, so these post-mod songs were my favoutites. This is my favourite song on the album and my second favourite Jam song next to That's Entertainment.

  • Work and work and work till you die!

  • 25 años escuchandola...y los pelos como escarpias

  • What can you say ? The Jam belong up there with The kinks, the Small Faces, the Who ect... great English bands.. Weller is a great songwriter.

i love the Fabs and Stones too but somehow they are different.

  • I bought this when I was ten years old and still think it's one of the greatest albums of all time...everyone should have a copy in their collection...this is my favourite Jam song, like Lennon's 'Working Class Hero', you could write a whole thesis on it. It captures the shitty mess that Britain was in at the time perfectly. Thanks for posting.

  • @Shellback41

Yeah Weller is a real working class hero Labour Party supporter. He broke the band up leaving his mates Foxton and Rick Buckler unemployed. There was recent talk of a reunion and Weller said no way. Even though Bruce and Rick could probably use the money. Yeah Weller is all for the workers.

  • @Franzko787 Well if you listen to 'Working Class Hero' by Lennon, he's not identifying himself as such - but that the pack will turn brutally against you if you show any signs of being different or individual.

This song was actually written by Foxton so...? And if anyone can play a bass and drums as good as Foxton and Buckler I think it's unlikely they'd be unemployed for long. Buckler has just left 'From the Jam' so I don't know were that leaves old Bruce!

  • Good to know Bruce had a song in him, I know it was Wellers killer lyrics at the end of the song thsat helped, but still good

  • Serving as a counterpoint to Paul Weller's vocals, the lovely strings arguably give the song's angry lyrics more edge than they have in the 'electric version'.

  • so well written.

This version kills the other one

  • it's definitely better than the "electric" version - this version is on a Jam "B-sides and rarities" or something album

  • And Setting Sons .

  • this version was on setting sons?

    it wasn't a rarity, i know that and i'm 17.

  • Who said it was rare ? , re read what was typed . USED AS A B SIDE as well as the album though i never brought there singles just the albums so wich single it is on without the quick Google can't tell

    you .

    Tom

  • stevierevbo said that this version was a B-side, but the electric version was the one used as a Bside and never appeared on an album, only on a best of album,

  • @XsammyXscrewdriverX

    Yep on Setting Sons

    Tom x

  • for some reason I prefer this version as the electric one

  • This is the original version (Album)

  • yupp

  • great song im mean maby the best song in history.
