this game is a prequel 10 years prior to kingdom hearts one so roxas does not exist yet and sora is only 4 years old during the time when this game takes place. the 3 characters are not sora, riku, kairi, but they do have a connection to sora, riku, and kairi.

Okay, I think Roxas is Sora's Nobody from when he got turned into a Heartless in KH1.

By freezing Sora, they affected his nobody too, and they all got stuck in a little virual world together.

My theory, anyways.

It is explained in KH2 that Ansem the Wise put Roxas in the Virtual world and wiped his memories after he left Org. XIII in 358/2 days.

Sora waking up causes the 'visions' of parts of KH1 in KH2 at the beginning with Roxas. And, to explain sora being in the 'virtual' world, Roxas woke on day 6 (or 7?) in the real world where he existed in 358/2 days. He goes into the chamber from COM where Sora went into the stasis pod and turned Sora back into a 'somebody'. And yes, Roxas was made KH1.
