Hey man great video! I've never really heard of flats until now so ill definitely be checking them out because you said that they run semi-cheap. Loved the hi-hat section!
I like how the snare sounds, despite what a bunch of people are saying. I like how it sounds unique without sounding like an empty biscuit tin :) It reminds me of the snare sound on Weezer's 'Getchoo'. Well played, sir.
Hello. They are maybe 20% more quite than a regular kit. They can played loud or soft depending on what types of sticks and music you are playing. They are decent for an apartment in that they take up less space than a regular kit but are still loud enough to wake up everyone in the building unfortunately. An electronic kit is probably best in an apartment so you can be virtually silent using headphones.
Hello. I have not tried these outdoors so I can't comment on that. The only drum that sounds a bit thin is the kick drum. They all sound pretty good but do lack the tone and resonance of a higher end shell kit. They sound better than most people would expect but really don't substitue for the real thing as far as a playing a gig - at least in my opinion.
Yes, you can get them with the cymbals - hi-hat, ride, and crash. That being said, you are much better off not using the cymbals and purchasing a different set as the cymbals are like tin can lids - really bad. The lowest end Zildjian or Sabians are much better than the stock cymbals that come with this set. Hope that helps.
Hello. They actually sound like a regular acoustic drum set. The do lack the resonance of a maple or other higher end shell though as you would expect. I would say they are like roto toms basically. The bass drum lacks depth which is the most noticeable issue to me. They are good for practice and portability though.
@Kempscha Pearl Rhythm traveler kit is $400 new with hardware and cheap cymbals. You have to use an Evans EMAD 2 on the bass drum and they sound way better than the traps.
They are similar to roto toms actually. The difference is basically that they are all contained in a rack that puts them in front of you like a tradition 5-piece drumset that you can pick up and put in the back of your car for great portability. They are clearly not designed to take the place of a good quality regular drum set. I must say that they do sound much better than many of the low end wood kits I've played or heard though.
@ginojohnson7 Hello. I couldn't do it but I'm sure someone out there could rig this up to have shells. They are not set up to have shells the way they are currently.
Probably partly due to cheap flip camera and maybe your computer speakers aren't able to give you the true sound. They are DWs but not bad for drums without shells.
I sort of like a low sound to begin with but the pin-stripe heads (that come with the set) tend to tune lower and flatter than a coated ambassador head, etc. It also may have to do with using a cheap flip camera to do the filming with instead of a good mic and camera set up.
Hey im moving to a split home with someone i do not know and was wondering how loud these things are cause i dont think my new neighbors would like me playing for 2-3 hours a day
I would say that these are about 2/3 of the volume of a normal kit and you can muffle them with tape, etc to help. The cymbals are always going to be a problem with volume though. I have never been able to muffle cymbals and still have them have the same quality sound. You may want to get a good electronic kit if you are worried about your neighbor's tolerance of the drums.
I've never seen, heard, or played the electric version. A used Roland TD-6 or similar set up is around the same price if you are looking for electronic and are decent quality for the money.
@AcmeLink Thanks for the kind words. I started playing early in life and then stopped for 25+ years when life got busy. I've just gotten back into it as my wife volunteered me to play in a church production - and needless to say, I am very rusty. I could sure use some lessons though - but there isn't a drum teacher up here in the mountains of New Hampshire.
@positivestep Thanks for the comments. You are absolutely correct. The biggest weakness of this kit is the bass drum - which is very flat sounding in my opinion. For a practice set and being portable, it is ok though and it is pretty easy to overlook the bass drum sound for these purposes.
Thanks for the comment. It's all a matter of personal preference. Most people probably couldn't tell much of a difference if they were blind folded and had this sitting next to a mid-level stock kit. I think the whole set is good for what you pay and the portability of it. Kind of like a set of roto toms configured like a regular kit that you can carry and move as one unit.
Great solo! As far as the drums: Do they come with drum rack or is that something you bought separate? Also, do you lose stick rebound with these heads? Lastly, how much did this set you back (drum and rack only, not cymbals)?
Hello and thank you. These come with the drum rack. The stick feel is exactly like regular drums as they use regular drum heads and you tune them just like any other drum. You can find the set new for around $599 at Musciain's Friend, eBay, etc.
I also like the floor tom but all the drums are surprisingly good for what they are. The best part is that you can literally pick up the set (after removing the cymbals), throw it in the back of your car and be ready to play in minutes without all of the usual setup hassels of a regular kit. That's the best part I think.
These are a bit lower volume than a regular kit - which is good for home practice and small venues actually. I tune them low just because I prefer that sound but you can tune them up as with any drum head. I'm constantly re-tuning drum heads and changing them out for different sounds.
For most smaller sized venues (ie churches, clubs, etc.) I think they are loud enough - with the exception of the bass drum which would need to be mic'd. That said, I have never gigged with them. I think a regular bass drum with the rest of this setup would be fine for most gigs actually.
No. I did not speed anything up. I used a very basic flip camera and did not edit any part of this. I don't have enough technical skill to even blend a video together actually.
im not tryin to be rude but whats the feckin point in makin a video if ur playin with rods, who the plays the type of rock beat you play with rods?u didnt buy coated skins either
I use rods (occasionally) when I am having a hard time holding onto regular sticks. This video was done spur of the moment so I really didn't put much thought into which sticks I was using or what to play. I usually use zildjian dips as they are great and have a good grip - just didn't use them for this demo. I did try coated heads on these and didn't like the sound as much as the pinstripe.
@paddioche Why does he HAVE to use coated heads? And why does it matter if he uses rods? You can hear everything perfectly well. Unless you load up a video of you playing BETTER than this guy, keep your dumb ass comments to yourself, you monkey-rimming grabastice piece of amphibian shit.
They are around $600 new (without the cymbal upgrade) but you can get them cheaper on eBay (used) occasionally. I would say they are definitely better sounding than the low-end sets like CB, Pulse, etc. This setup is way more portable than regular sets and a bit lower volume as well. A mid quality set like Pacific FS and up probably sound better, especially the bass drum. Get these if your looking to put them into a small area, want less volume, and need portability.
I would type in Flats Trap drum set each day until you come up with a used set. I actually sold my set (the one in the video) on eBay for $300 (which was stupid on my part). I would not recommend getting the cymbals that come with the set. Right now I can only find new sets for $599. Keep checking though and you will find a deal.
hey nice video im think about getting a traps set. How durable are the drums and hardware? Can they stand a beating? The floor tom looks as if it is about to break off the mount soon
Hello. The drums and hardware are a lot stronger than they look actually. The floor tom does look wobbly but it is pretty solid as far as being durable goes. I will say that the bass pedal that comes with it is terrible and you will really need a different one. I also prefer a regular snare stand to the one that mounts to the rack but it is only a personal preference thing. The rack is great. Overall, it is not bad for an inexpensive setup that is very portable.
I think most of the higher end Zildjians sound good. There is a clear sound quality difference when you go to more expensive cymbals (I think I've tried them all over the years). That seems to hod true with whatever brand you use - Zidjian, Sabian, Paiste, etc. The Armands have a more traditional sound but I like the a-customs quite a bit too. It really comes down to personal preference.
I think the best use for them is home practice and for portable transport for band practice, etc.. I don't think many drummers would use them for a live gig, although I suppose it is possible. I can honestly say that they are way better in sound quality than the low end shell drum sets on the market today. These don't have the quality of a high end set but I don't think are really intended to. I have a DW set and roland TD-20 electronic kit and I wasn't unhappy with these.
hmmm not sure if i should get these or not do you know of any better fairly cheap electric drums but if not these sound a hell of alot better than i thought they would
As far as cheap electronic drums, I would go with either Roland TD-6 or Yamaha DTX III (I've had them both). You can get them both around $700 on eBay (close to the same price as these). The electronic sets are good because they are silent if you want. These Traps drums are a lot of fun and are much more like the real thing though. As good as they sound, they aren't quite like a high-end shell kit. Very good for practice and portability. Hope that helps.
Although the sound quality is surprisingly good, I don't think it would be great for gigs - although I have not tried it for this. It is good for home practice or band practice if you have to lug you drums around. I would spend the same money and get a DW Pacific FS set or the equivalent for gigs, etc. Hope this helps.
I like the kick and the snare but the toms lack to me personally. The floor is the best out of them all but they just sound dead. I can see why since there is very little shell and now reso head but it would bug me. Nice chops though. Also along with what the other guy said about the cymbals, you can put a small piece of moongel on the top ot a strip of duck tape on the bottom. Doesn't cut down a lot on volume but takes away a lot of wash and ring.
The E450 is almost the same but it comes with electronic pads that you can put on the drum heads and it becomes an electronic drum...but this one don't come with cymbals
actually i bought the E450 but i prefer to use it as an acoustic drum...so i bought Zildjians and im using the electronic pads as other cymbals and toms...works great
I typically muffle the bottom drum head with some tape and folded paper towel and then put a piece of tape around the snare strainer in the middle to give it a more controlled snare sound and cut down on the snare buzz. This is just a personal preference and I play around with this a lot to get the sound I like.

How come the cymbals sound so good when they are flat aswel?
iainmccormack 2 years ago
I think most of the higher end Zildjians sound good. There is a clear sound quality difference when you go to more expensive cymbals (I think I've tried them all over the years). That seems to hod true with whatever brand you use - Zidjian, Sabian, Paiste, etc. The Armands have a more traditional sound but I like the a-customs quite a bit too. It really comes down to personal preference.

when i saw these i had to search to find out what sound they made and that was really far from what i expected.

wow love the cymbals

Good cymbals make all the difference. The cymbals that come with these drums are worthless - the upgrade really makes a difference.

these drums are very strange. i found one on craigs list and it freaked me out

I have a DW set and roland TD-20 electronic kit and I wasn't unhappy with these.

hmmm not sure if i should get these or not do you know of any better fairly cheap electric drums but if not these sound a hell of alot better than i thought they would
funnyamericans93 2 years ago
As far as cheap electronic drums, I would go with either Roland TD-6 or Yamaha DTX III (I've had them both). You can get them both around $700 on eBay (close to the same price as these). The electronic sets are good because they are silent if you want. These Traps drums are a lot of fun and are much more like the real thing though. As good as they sound, they aren't quite like a high-end shell kit. Very good for practice and portability. Hope that helps.

very nice playing, those sound good for rotos and i love your armands
njnetsfan524 2 years ago
Thanks. Zildjian Armands are a good brand of cymbal for sure - have a classic sound without tons of volume. I like the A-customs a lot too.

I'm not great - but thanks for the compliment!

sound alot better than i thought they would
RidethLightning 2 years ago
You're right. It is hard to believe that drum heads without shells would have this kind of sound. Roto toms are also a bit amazing in that regard.
Kempscha 2 years ago
They don't project much sound do they?
DogOfPanic 2 years ago
Not really. They do not have the volume (I would guess around 75%) of a normal set - which can be a good thing for home practice, etc.

Excellent drumming and a nice introduction to the Traps set!

Dude should I get this? How good is this for gigs?
samiparisis 2 years ago

Thanks for the cymbal idea - I'll play around with it.

Hello. No, this is just the regular acoustic kit. I have not tried the E450.
Kempscha 2 years ago
The E450 is almost the same but it comes with electronic pads that you can put on the drum heads and it becomes an electronic drum...but this one don't come with cymbals
actually i bought the E450 but i prefer to use it as an acoustic drum...so i bought Zildjians and im using the electronic pads as other cymbals and toms...works great
cheers mate

I feel the same way when I see some of the drum stuff on this website.
Kempscha 2 years ago
yeh i wanted to know how did you tune your snare...coz i love it
DEL4016 2 years ago
I typically muffle the bottom drum head with some tape and folded paper towel and then put a piece of tape around the snare strainer in the middle to give it a more controlled snare sound and cut down on the snare buzz. This is just a personal preference and I play around with this a lot to get the sound I like.
