Man, Elliot looked like he was going to get by so many times, even after his collision. But Earnhardt had him blocked. And even when Elliot got into him to send him into the grass, Earnhardt must have floored it through the grass and still had the lead.
Not exactly a pass in the grass, but the kind of white-knuckle racing you don't see anymore unless you go to your local track and watch some kids who still have a real hunger to win.
Wow. Earnhardt ran bill elliot up so high on the track he almost put him in the wall. Earnhardt was a dirty driver. RIP but fuck his driving style. Dirty as fuck.
@TonyPizzaro Yeah, He has a lot of class and Morals unlike most drivers today.....And even a lot of them back then. He had a right to be mad after this one. I'd be mad too if I had the fastest race car there by far and get blocked and get my tire cut down, Wouldn't you?
@homergrand99 It's on here now. Just look up 1987 Winston All Star. Its part 11 of 11. Funny as hell. Earnhardt gives looks like the cat that ate the canary, while Elliot looked mad enough to match his hair.
@homergrand99 What I wished would have happened is Earnhardt not cut his tire down and see what would have taken place then. Bill was so much faster it wasn't even funny...If he would have ever gotten out front the race would have been for second....Earnhardt KNEW that which is why he did what he did best.....Block, Wreck others, tear other peoples equipment up, purposely take someone out...The list goes on.

Pass in the grass is the biggest overstatement ever said. There was never a "PASS" If Earnhardt wouldn't have cut his tire down #3 wouldn't have finished the race. Bill was so much faster that day it wasn't even funny. That Ford thunderbird was SAILING THAT DAY.
IMHO this was the best looking of all of Dale Sr's cars, I think that's why Dale Jr. decided to replicate it in the Nationwide race earlier this year. Something about that aero M/C SS.
@RichieWilliams97 We have them, Edwards and Brad Keselowski, or Kyle Busch and Brad Keselowski, or any number of other drivers and Brad Keselowski. But in saying that all of the afore mentioned drivers lack the true SKILL that Dale Sr. did, and Keselowski needs daddy to make his threats and fight his fights for him.
@FresnoCrawlers I wonder if Kyle Busch ends up the next Dale Earnhardt. I know it's not quite the same, but I think the closest thing to Earnhardt, since Earnhardt, has been Tony Stewart. The a-hole people can get behind.
Maybe one day that'll be Busch. I mean, some people even cheer Jeff Gordon now, a taste of humble pie can go a long way in the PR department.
@jrsub3 He could be, he has the on-track talent that could be developed into something in the same class as Dale Sr. But PR was so different 10 years ago before Dale died, if you listen to sound bites of Sr. he was so much more than just on-track talent, he was off track talent too. Something you're aware of I'm sure, today it's about who's name is on the fender, not who's is on the side of the roof. When you buy a Matt Kenseth shirt for example, you're buying into Crown Royal, not the driver.
@FresnoCrawlers Kaz lets his driving do the talking, ever notice how much class he brings when they ask about him gettin intentionally taken out? Kaz came to race not play garage politics, the boys better learn they can't run him off the track when he has the line,
Do you see this nowadays? HELLLLLL NOOOOOO. The word "RACING" doesnt exist in nascar anymore because thats NOT what is happening!! Its a joke nowadays
@masterfenix9 you're a complete asshole, he was the best racer in NASCAR history, if you got your shit straight you would realize that his death wasn't his fault, he got spun into a wall, broke his neck, it wasn't idiotic driving, he was actually helping dale jr keep up in the race, to help him win, it was an accident, fuck you retard
@guitarguy940 No until 1990 you came in as fast as you could, after an accident at Atlanta in the final race of the year in which Bill Elliott's rear tire changer Mike Rich was pinned between two cars ( the Video is on here ) an latter died while in surgery. the next year NASCAR brought an Odd even rule for pit procedure latter modified to what we see today.
for those who argue about would nascar drivers today compete with nascar driver yesterday.only 3 to 5 would.back in this day there was a thing called take the win or tow the car!meant they would wreck there cars for that win!today drivers are running like pricey little girls.that the reason why alot of real racing fans love the nascar feather lite modified.plus even at a 1 mile track there restricted on the motors!
hmm, last time I checked, "real" racing went on today, just it has different drivers, newer cars, worse commentary, less personalities (although some of that is coming back) more sponsor obligations/obsessions and less short tracks. The racing is still the same though, like last years All-star race, which was one of the best races I have seen in a long time.
i dont know why everyone say earnhardt made pass on grass.. dale was already 1st place. bill never passed dale when dale went to grass n came back. he juz made a save. thats it. no pass for 1st place.
That's NOT it. Elliott was on his way to pass and Dale KNEW it! The ONLY reason why Elliott didn't pass was BECAUSE of Dale going into the grass. That's the whole point. Dale Knew Elliott was going to pass him unless he blocked. Just look at 0:44 (don't get more deliberate than that!) And you Even see Elliott let Off at that point.
Bill had the faster car & Dale Knew it. I mean, the Only reason Dale was there was cause of the 1st lap tangle (again.. Elliott faster and tryin to pass Bodine)
This was a three segment race. Let me see if I can recall who won the first two segments.......And what was the margin of victory? Difficult to recall.
@nilla003 dont know who won the first two segments, but the margin of victory was .74 sec. im looking up results 4 every allstar race as a stepping stone to try to become a nascar historian
I was being sarcastic paulsack21. Elliott won the first two segments, nearly lapping the field in both. That is why Bodine was so desperate to get past the 9 at the start. The fact is earnhardt, great though he was, was a poor sportsman in what should be a gentlemans sport. After all, as he learned, it can be life and death even when great care is taken.
AMEN bro! It's Dale's own style, with ALL Due respect, that got him killed. Elliott Did win the first 2 and then Bodine (Almost purposely?) tried to block him, take him out?? I mean..how do you cut down that far, toward the apron on the first turn with someone running up on you,Spotter seeing!?..Come on now!! Elliott was SO obviously faster (even had Dale at 1:22-23On the Outside!) but Dale was the best at blocking/pushing aside, which you see, then Elliott, forced behind, cut the tire.
@negtype13 man shut up haha if u think bill elliot was a better driver than earnhardt then u dont know shit. bill elliot may have had the better car but no matter what he did he couldnt pass earnhardt CASE CLOSED!!!!!!
LMAO at all the Ford fans leaving comments here. Face the facts, the Chevrolets beat your asses on the track and on streets. Cry all you want about it, it won't change a thing.
yeah, how's that bankruptcy working out for you???? Meanwhile Ford earned $1B Q32009 while gov't motors lost another $1.2B in the same quarter. nascar racing is one pathetic joke,. if you think big 3 boardrooms care more about nascar than they do about profit, you're dead wrong. Ford outperforms gov't motors in the showroom and on the street. facing chevy/gm is a failed/bankrupt company which makes shot cars/trucks. the numbers speak for themselves. gm=epic fail
Ford got its billions from taxpayers as well. Only it was cleverly named a "loan" under the Energy Independence and Security Act. Reading is fundamental.
Ok Earnhardt is the best hands down, had not that good of equipment. Petty had his dads championship winning team and sponsers ready to go, and Gordon was spoiled multi-car team earnhardt had none of that, from 1980- 2000 Big E left the top 10 in points only twice and the top 5 like 7 times, thats domination. Bill France said it best "Nascar has lost its GREATEST DRIVER EVER" end of story.
Look at '1986 NASCAR all star race' on youtube and you will see why earnhardt pulled this stunt. Left a bad taste in his mouth to be dusted like that. 'If you can't beat 'em, wreck 'em'. He couldn't even smell the fumes from #9. A car built by 3 brothers in a cinder-block building on a back road in north Georgia. Was earnhardt a better driver? Yes. Did he have any scruples. No, and for that his fan loved him.
Too bad the ones who make dumb comments on tube can't have a button to be pushed to send them to hell like that buceye692001 douche. We can all disagree but when someone is glad another is dead then that person is retarded or needs meds.
LOL "PASS IN THE GRASS" BABY!!!!! I remember Elliott trying to wreck everybody in that race so his slowbird could win. Too bad red. Same results on the street with the Monte SS sucking up the T-Bird in one exhast pipe and blowing it out the other like a gum wrapper. This is but one example of thousands that show Dale as the greatest ever. There are more with other drivers as Elliott usually could not run with Dale, so he did not make many highlights with "The Great One."
Looks like one person with all the answers here. Too bad they are all wrong. Earnhardt is the GREATEST DRIVER EVER!!! He will be the frist driver inducted in to the Hall Of Fame. Some people can pull names out of their ass to make themselves seem like they know something. LOL I saw Earnhardt win all those races and Cups. Best ever and I don't need to keep saying it over and over to make it believable. Everyone who knows racing knows that fact. Nuff said and done in one post too.
For those who say nascar sucks is because they burden drivers with rules back in the day earnhardt could block or spin someone and then he would probably get earnhardt now a days if kyle busch does that the driver wouldn't even retalate 'cause he and busch would be penilized so thats how busch isnt like earnhardt
if theres something nascar don't like they just screw them over. they make a living out of it. they screw fords out of winning all the time. just watch the races listen to the announcers they'll give the race away. they like to play like there God or king of something.
first off i would like to say nascar SUCKS.!. and this was no pass in the grass he was leading and was blocking bill like the dirty driver he was. nascar is as crooked as politics. and dale sr is taking a big ole dirt nap.
Off subject, but how the points system SHOULD be: divide the schedule into three 12 race segments. Each driver is allowed to drop ONE result from each segment at the time of the event, not at a later date. Thus each driver would be allowed to drop three poor finishes, tightening up the points considerably. Thoughts? P.S. I don't like the chase.
Another 1 - 2 - 3 finish for those Aerocoupe Monte Carlo SS'....The post race interviews for this race are hilarious. Elliot looked like he was about to light a match to his hair after this race!
I liked him too, but their short track program really held them back. He won his only short track race in '88, the year that he won the Cup. That is where Earnhardt, Waltrip, Gant, Bodine etc. owned the Elliotts. You can''t give away half the schedule (back then) and expect to challenge for the Cup.
Bill won at Richmond in March of 1992 as well driving the #11 Bud T- Bird for Junior Johnson. Earnhardt wasn't very good at MIS, Pocono, Dover or the road courses.
Actually Earnhardt was one of the best Road course drivers around just never had luck , and he never started the road courses , he started in Ovals . :)
Rusty Wallace, Ricky Rudd, Ernie Irvan, Kyle Petty, Tim Richmond, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon and even Geoff Bodine were better then Earnhardt at Watkins Glen, Sears Point and Riverside (for the older guys). I put Earnhardt even with Elliott, Marlin, Davey Allison and Terry Labonte.
Kyle Petty a better road racer than Earnhardt? No way. Earnhardt had loads of top fives at Riverside, Sears Point, and Watkins Glen, won one race and had bad luck in both '93 races...should have won more he did. The others you listed yes, and I think saying "even" Geoff Bodine is an insult to Bodine. Earnhardt was better than Marlin and Davey on road courses; I'll agree equal with Elliott and T. Labonte.
So you would put a guy with 7 Championships in the modern era even with guys with 1 or less championship? Strange logic. Face it folks, you didn't have to like the man (Earnhardt) but you had to respect the man. Few could match his talent and desire.
As for the T-Bird vs Monte Carlo SS. Come on folks, the Monte Carlo SS won 52% of the races it was used in from 1983-89. Won the manufacturers cup EVERY year it was raced. DOMINATION no matter how you want to spin it.
Just remember 789, Elliott and his brothers BUILT the car that came from 5 miles back, under green, at Talladega. And #3 could only watch. To hear his fans, I'd have thought that he could have thrown the car up on his back and toted it past that lame old T-Bird. Also recall that in 'The Winston' post-race interview Earnhardt blamed Bill for wrecking #5. But who did the 5-car ram after the event? It wasn't the #9.
Earnhardt? Hell, Gordon passed him in wins in half the time. When Gordon came to town the winning % of #3 went in the toilet. "If ya can't beat 'em, wreck , em." Just look at the Holly Farms video on here and see what a sportsman the "intimidator" was. Was he a better driver that Elliott? Sure. But could the Elliotts build a better car under those rules than Childress? You betcha!
Gordon is no better than anyone else. He was beating Earnhardt when he was old and Jeff was in pampers still. Realize the 40-50 guys that run Nascar are the cream of the crop. The crew is much more important than the driver and any driver can win with the right tools.
Dale would drive hard BUT he owned up to it and admitted when he spun someone. He was NOT a whiner like most are today.
Four Cups and he's no better than anyone else? Well, if we use that criterion then #3 wasn't that great either. As for the intimidator owning up to his liability regarding certain wrecks, ask Labonte about Bristol. I always enjoyed seeing #3 push and shove his way forward, making rapid progress. Then he would come up to Morgan Shepard or Rusty or Spencer and he would suddenly become a bit more gentlemanly. No doubt that he was a great driver. But others did it with much more class.
If you are claiming he won 4 cups based on driving alone its ludicrous. He had the best team for many years. Im guessing you havent driven a stock car so I can understand your comments. But if you put a moron in charge of setting up the chassis for any team they will do nothing. Look at how good Martin is running now with a REAL crew chief! Look how NOT good Dale Jr is w/out his old crew.
Look how poorly Jr. has always done. No I haven't driven a stockcar. But I was watching cup races before #3 won his first Cup. They should make a wine for all the Gordon haters and use only the sour grapes. He put too many 'W's in his column to suit the intimidator fans. And by the way I'm NOT a Gordon fan (or hater, just a respector). I AM a Martin fan. And have been since he first drove the Strohs T-Bird. There is a driver that always behaves like a man. He deserved better in '90.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Like Kenny Schrader was fond of saying, Earnhardt always said he was sorry after wrecking him out of a race. The point being that he had to say it so often.
Let's see, from 1979-1994 (16 years), Dale Sr won 7 Cups. 1993-2008 (16 years), Jeff G only won 4 Cups. Doesn't matter now many races you win, it's how many titles. Dale E also did something no other driver had done before or since, win Rookie of the Year and the Cup in back-to-back years. Not even Jeff did.
I'm not saying Jeff isn't a good driver, he's a great driver, BUT his peak was when Ray Everham was his Crew Chief. Yes, he won the 2001 Cup without Everham, but has struggled since. Then along came a certain driver (hired by Gordon himself) named Jimmie Johnson who has dominated the last few years (including 3 Cups back to back to back, something only Cale Yarborough had managed to do prior), and now Jeff has been mired to mediocrity.
Pearson could have won more cups, but Holman-Moody and the Woods Brothers only ran a limited schedule during the 70's. David had some incredible years dominating the mid size and big tracks from 1973-76. When he did run the entire schedule in the 60's, he won the cup in 1966, 68 and 69.
people can say what the want about dale senior but that man could flat out drive ... I miss his presence in nascar every time I see these whiny guys do their interviews lol
Back in the day, those two where the top rivals. They one some, and lost some. Like the amazing 2 lap comback Bill made at the Winston 500 back in 1985. Bill and Dale were duking it out, but eventually Bill came through. Props to both drivers. Rip D.E.
1 #3 win at MIS from 1986-88 for your nearly unstopable AMC and 1 non-Earnhardt AMC win at Dover? I guess they couldn't handle the tourqe range and better shape of the t-Birds at those two tracks.
Only chance they had was to put Elliot out of the race? What race were you watchin?? Dale even went down with all 4 wheels into the grass and Elliot still couldn't take the lead. Gimme a break, Earnhardt just flat out beat 'em that day.
Bill was way too nice this day! I would have put Dale into the wall! He clearly came down on Bill and nearly ran him off the track! Bodine did the same thing earlier. They knew their only chance was to put Bill out of the race! I have to admit racing isn't the same since Dale died. But, I just wonder how many races that Dale won without wrecking or bumping somebody out of the way! I'd bet not many!
Elliott would have easily won, but the pace car pulled off late and blocked Elliott from a clean restart. Anyone who has followed racing knows that Elliott is as about as clean driver as there is; IMO Earnhardt came up the track on the frontstrech causing himself to spin out. Elliott could have finished it when Earnhardt came up after being in the grass - after all, we've seen Earnhardt do this kind of blatant stuff all the time..
That's what Earnhardt liked to say anyway... Not a lot of people shared the same view of "racing," as he did. I remember him plowing Terry Labonte on the last lap of Bristol one time... he didn't slow down... just used him as breaks. He was a pretty dirty racer a lot of times, but still would have won a lot if he raced clean... just not as much.
Amen!!! Earnhardt would wreck a guy and blame it on him. Dale cut Bill off and went into the grass and Bill backed off so he wouldn't cause a big mess. Shit like that is the reason I never liked Earnhardt.
Hahahaha, thas funny..Elliott backed off...not! And yes it's true, Earnhardt drove the shit out of a car, Stewart is about as close as we'll ever come to Sr.
People who are unfamiliar with the sport; you need to marvel in the amount of skill and audacity it takes to pull off this move.
FresnoCrawlers 1 year ago
@FresnoCrawlers Lol, alot of shit's happened ever since I made that post.
RichieWilliams97 1 year ago
@FresnoCrawlers I wonder if Kyle Busch ends up the next Dale Earnhardt. I know it's not quite the same, but I think the closest thing to Earnhardt, since Earnhardt, has been Tony Stewart. The a-hole people can get behind.
Maybe one day that'll be Busch. I mean, some people even cheer Jeff Gordon now, a taste of humble pie can go a long way in the PR department.
jrsub3 1 year ago
@jrsub3 He could be, he has the on-track talent that could be developed into something in the same class as Dale Sr. But PR was so different 10 years ago before Dale died, if you listen to sound bites of Sr. he was so much more than just on-track talent, he was off track talent too. Something you're aware of I'm sure, today it's about who's name is on the fender, not who's is on the side of the roof. When you buy a Matt Kenseth shirt for example, you're buying into Crown Royal, not the driver.
FresnoCrawlers 1 year ago
@FresnoCrawlers Kaz lets his driving do the talking, ever notice how much class he brings when they ask about him gettin intentionally taken out? Kaz came to race not play garage politics, the boys better learn they can't run him off the track when he has the line,

hmm, last time I checked, "real" racing went on today, just it has different drivers, newer cars, worse commentary, less personalities (although some of that is coming back) more sponsor obligations/obsessions and less short tracks. The racing is still the same though, like last years All-star race, which was one of the best races I have seen in a long time.

ChevyPiston63 2 years ago
This isn't Earnhardt's pass on grass. That was at Riverside in the same year I think.
Friedchicken80 2 years ago
That's NOT it. Elliott was on his way to pass and Dale KNEW it! The ONLY reason why Elliott didn't pass was BECAUSE of Dale going into the grass. That's the whole point. Dale Knew Elliott was going to pass him unless he blocked. Just look at 0:44 (don't get more deliberate than that!) And you Even see Elliott let Off at that point.
Bill had the faster car & Dale Knew it. I mean, the Only reason Dale was there was cause of the 1st lap tangle (again.. Elliott faster and tryin to pass Bodine)

nilla003 2 years ago
@nilla003 dont know who won the first two segments, but the margin of victory was .74 sec. im looking up results 4 every allstar race as a stepping stone to try to become a nascar historian
paulsack21 2 years ago
I was being sarcastic paulsack21. Elliott won the first two segments, nearly lapping the field in both. That is why Bodine was so desperate to get past the 9 at the start. The fact is earnhardt, great though he was, was a poor sportsman in what should be a gentlemans sport. After all, as he learned, it can be life and death even when great care is taken.
nilla003 2 years ago
Elliott was SO obviously faster (even had Dale at 1:22-23On the Outside!) but Dale was the best at blocking/pushing aside, which you see, then Elliott, forced behind, cut the tire.
negtype13 2 years ago
@negtype13 man shut up haha if u think bill elliot was a better driver than earnhardt then u dont know shit. bill elliot may have had the better car but no matter what he did he couldnt pass earnhardt CASE CLOSED!!!!!!

yeah, how's that bankruptcy working out for you???? Meanwhile Ford earned $1B Q32009 while gov't motors lost another $1.2B in the same quarter. nascar racing is one pathetic joke,. if you think big 3 boardrooms care more about nascar than they do about profit, you're dead wrong. Bill France said it best "Nascar has lost its GREATEST DRIVER EVER" end of story.
neyneyturkey 2 years ago
Look at '1986 NASCAR all star race' on youtube and you will see why earnhardt pulled this stunt. Left a bad taste in his mouth to be dusted like that. 'If you can't beat 'em, wreck 'em'. He couldn't even smell the fumes from #9. A car built by 3 brothers in a cinder-block building on a back road in north Georgia. Was earnhardt a better driver? Yes. Did he have any scruples. No, and for that his fan loved him.

Off subject, but how the points system SHOULD be: divide the schedule into three 12 race segments. Each driver is allowed to drop ONE result from each segment at the time of the event, not at a later date. Thus each driver would be allowed to drop three poor finishes, tightening up the points considerably. Thoughts? P.S. I don't like the chase.
nilla003 2 years ago
Pass on the grass? Earnhardt was already leading when Elliot bumbed him on to grass and Dale could barely hold the lead.
And they always refer this as the pass on the grass.
Petrooli 2 years ago
One reason that earnhardt drove like this was his memory of the '86 Winston.
nilla003 2 years ago
Another 1 - 2 - 3 finish for those Aerocoupe Monte Carlo SS'....The post race interviews for this race are hilarious. Elliot looked like he was about to light a match to his hair after this race!
McCall72 2 years ago
I liked him too, but their short track program really held them back. He won his only short track race in '88, the year that he won the Cup. That is where Earnhardt, Waltrip, Gant, Bodine etc. owned the Elliotts. You can''t give away half the schedule (back then) and expect to challenge for the Cup.
nilla003 2 years ago
Bill won at Richmond in March of 1992 as well driving the #11 Bud T- Bird for Junior Johnson. Earnhardt wasn't very good at MIS, Pocono, Dover or the road courses.
Longlakedreaming 2 years ago
Actually Earnhardt was one of the best Road course drivers around just never had luck , and he never started the road courses , he started in Ovals . :)
creedgaming 2 years ago
Rusty Wallace, Ricky Rudd, Ernie Irvan, Kyle Petty, Tim Richmond, Mark Martin, Jeff Gordon and even Geoff Bodine were better then Earnhardt at Watkins Glen, Sears Point and Riverside (for the older guys). I put Earnhardt even with Elliott, Marlin, Davey Allison and Terry Labonte.
Longlakedreaming 2 years ago
Kyle Petty a better road racer than Earnhardt? No way. Earnhardt had loads of top fives at Riverside, Sears Point, and Watkins Glen, won one race and had bad luck in both '93 races...should have won more he did. The others you listed yes, and I think saying "even" Geoff Bodine is an insult to Bodine. Earnhardt was better than Marlin and Davey on road courses; I'll agree equal with Elliott and T. Labonte.
arenasnow 2 years ago
So you would put a guy with 7 Championships in the modern era even with guys with 1 or less championship? Strange logic. Face it folks, you didn't have to like the man (Earnhardt) but you had to respect the man. Few could match his talent and desire.
As for the T-Bird vs Monte Carlo SS. Come on folks, the Monte Carlo SS won 52% of the races it was used in from 1983-89. Won the manufacturers cup EVERY year it was raced. DOMINATION no matter how you want to spin it.
McCall72 2 years ago
Just remember 789, Elliott and his brothers BUILT the car that came from 5 miles back, under green, at Talladega. And #3 could only watch. To hear his fans, I'd have thought that he could have thrown the car up on his back and toted it past that lame old T-Bird. Also recall that in 'The Winston' post-race interview Earnhardt blamed Bill for wrecking #5. But who did the 5-car ram after the event? It wasn't the #9.
nilla003 2 years ago
You betcha!
nilla003 2 years ago
Gordon is no better than anyone else. He was beating Earnhardt when he was old and Jeff was in pampers still. Realize the 40-50 guys that run Nascar are the cream of the crop. The crew is much more important than the driver and any driver can win with the right tools.
Dale would drive hard BUT he owned up to it and admitted when he spun someone. He was NOT a whiner like most are today.
brown55061 2 years ago
Four Cups and he's no better than anyone else? Well, if we use that criterion then #3 wasn't that great either. As for the intimidator owning up to his liability regarding certain wrecks, ask Labonte about Bristol. I always enjoyed seeing #3 push and shove his way forward, making rapid progress. Then he would come up to Morgan Shepard or Rusty or Spencer and he would suddenly become a bit more gentlemanly. No doubt that he was a great driver. But others did it with much more class.
nilla003 2 years ago
If you are claiming he won 4 cups based on driving alone its ludicrous. He had the best team for many years. Im guessing you havent driven a stock car so I can understand your comments. But if you put a moron in charge of setting up the chassis for any team they will do nothing. Look at how good Martin is running now with a REAL crew chief! Look how NOT good Dale Jr is w/out his old crew.
brown55061 2 years ago
Look how poorly Jr. has always done. No I haven't driven a stockcar. But I was watching cup races before #3 won his first Cup. They should make a wine for all the Gordon haters and use only the sour grapes. He put too many 'W's in his column to suit the intimidator fans. And by the way I'm NOT a Gordon fan (or hater, just a respector). I AM a Martin fan. And have been since he first drove the Strohs T-Bird. There is a driver that always behaves like a man. He deserved better in '90.

Like Kenny Schrader was fond of saying, Earnhardt always said he was sorry after wrecking him out of a race. The point being that he had to say it so often.
Longlakedreaming 2 years ago
Let's see, from 1979-1994 (16 years), Dale Sr won 7 Cups. 1993-2008 (16 years), Jeff G only won 4 Cups. Doesn't matter now many races you win, it's how many titles. Dale E also did something no other driver had done before or since, win Rookie of the Year and the Cup in back-to-back years. Not even Jeff did.
TyVulpine 2 years ago
And Dale Sr won 6 Cups in just 9 years (86, 87, 90, 91, 93, 94). That's domination. And lost the 1995 cup by just 34 points to Jeff.
TyVulpine 2 years ago
See comments of Mr. Brown, below.
nilla003 2 years ago
I'm not saying Jeff isn't a good driver, he's a great driver, BUT his peak was when Ray Everham was his Crew Chief. Yes, he won the 2001 Cup without Everham, but has struggled since. Then along came a certain driver (hired by Gordon himself) named Jimmie Johnson who has dominated the last few years (including 3 Cups back to back to back, something only Cale Yarborough had managed to do prior), and now Jeff has been mired to mediocrity.
TyVulpine 2 years ago
Races won is not important, just titles???? Tell that to David Pearson!
nilla003 2 years ago 2
Sure the Silver Fox won 105 races, but only won 3 Cups (1966, 1968, 1969). Dale Earnhardt Sr only won 76 races, yet still won 7 Cups.
TyVulpine 2 years ago
Pearson could have won more cups, but Holman-Moody and the Woods Brothers only ran a limited schedule during the 70's. David had some incredible years dominating the mid size and big tracks from 1973-76. When he did run the entire schedule in the 60's, he won the cup in 1966, 68 and 69.

But, I just wonder how many races that Dale won without wrecking or bumping somebody out of the way! I'd bet not many!
68drummer 2 years ago 3
Elliott would have easily won, but the pace car pulled off late and blocked Elliott from a clean restart. Anyone who has followed racing knows that Elliott is as about as clean driver as there is; IMO Earnhardt came up the track on the frontstrech causing himself to spin out. Elliott could have finished it when Earnhardt came up after being in the grass - after all, we've seen Earnhardt do this kind of blatant stuff all the time..
GuitarGuyBMG 2 years ago 2

That's what Earnhardt liked to say anyway... Not a lot of people shared the same view of "racing," as he did. I remember him plowing Terry Labonte on the last lap of Bristol one time... he didn't slow down... just used him as breaks. He was a pretty dirty racer a lot of times, but still would have won a lot if he raced clean... just not as much.
GuitarGuyBMG 2 years ago
Amen!!! Earnhardt would wreck a guy and blame it on him. Dale cut Bill off and went into the grass and Bill backed off so he wouldn't cause a big mess. Shit like that is the reason I never liked Earnhardt.
