I have switch to an Linux OS away from Windows and like it. Windows and Mac OS are not the most powerful, safest and fastest OS. And yes you CAN replace Mac and or Windows with a Linux OS and you can also play games on it natively as I have fully switched to Linux OSs on all my computers. There are a lot of softwares in the Ubuntu repos. You can customize a Linux OS anyway you want it to be and release it to others without worrying about copyright. And yes I have also used MACs before.
I personally prefer Ubuntu over Windows. In my opinion, it works much better, its much more faster, i have more control over my system, and for me, it was very easy to learn. I started using ubuntu in Christmas, and i learned a lot about computers since then. Before i started, i knew shit about computers. lol
The major linux distributions are by far, very easy to use. For me, much easier than Windows.
The only problem with some people starting linux that i didnt have, was that it wasn't something they were used to. Somehow, i was able to not even pay attention to Windows functions with Linux, but most other people aren't like that.
@FlamingLinux Linux from what i have seen was way harder to use years ago, but it gets simpler and more useful everyday or year. (Most noticeable with year)
Neverthe less, i like where the arguement is coming from. :O)
A lot of your claims are factually incorrect. Security-wise, Linux is much more secure than OSX: at hacking competitions, Linux typically performs very well in comparison to both OSX and to the various versions of Windows.
Secondly, you say that the speed of development in open source software is typically slow, but the actual numbers show that this is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true: open source projects often have more updates than do closed-source projects.
Further, if you want to argue that Linux is only safe because of market share, then you clearly know very little about the web.
68% of web servers are run using Apache (open-source software!), the vast majority of these are on Linux.
only 21%, IIRC, run MS IIS.
You would think, therefore, that there would be a lot of malware exploiting security flaws in Apache and in Linux, because a lot of these servers are very desirable targets.
This is not what we find. We do find a lot for IIS, though.
Now, your criticism that Linux is difficult to use was fair a couple of years ago. But try the major distros of Linux now-- many, such as Ubuntu, are very easy to use. In fact, I have more trouble using OSX than I do Ubuntu, but that's because I'm not used to OSX. Many people who have difficulty with Linux do so not because it's inherently more difficult, but because it's different from what they are used to. Sure, there are things that beginners will have difficulty with-- just like on any OS.
Lastly, I find it amusing that you try to knock Ubuntu for "copying" Windows (a laughable claim, really) when OSX is just UNIX-- the very same system that Linux was modeled after.
I have a Ubuntu System and it is a very good solution if you are short on cash and need a computer. To install a program just go to the download sent and click install and tada! By the way if people don't make viruses for Linux then it is the safest.
whats wrong with windows 7 and vista? I had vista since it came out, never had any problems with it, was a bit slow but I installed windows 7 when it came out, its definitely a hg improvement, nothing like vista, it has many nice features kind of like XP when it came out.
I remember how all you fags hated XP when it came out, now your holding on to it and criticizing windows 7 because your too damn closed minded. As for open source, its not the future, no way...
Why are you asking me if you loved XP? I never had a explorer crash in Vista or 7. As for Linux, I've tried Ubuntu, Mint, Kubuntu, Open Suse, Fedora programs crashed there too, I had to restart my computer at one point. Linux is just so illogical to understand, in the new KDE my open windows disappeared form the task bar and I couldnt find a way to put this back. I had to search around the web to find out how to install Wine and my sound card wanst supported. Wtf? And Open office is a joke...
youre a fucking retard, Linux doesnt support a 1 year old system, wtf? I dont even use the versions that support my system. Linux sucks. I'm not a hater so stop taking shit, I'm just saying that linux sucks, if it was logical and well made like windows or mac I would use it so stfu your prick.
Now in his new video he says we don't need Adobe... check it out look at this video >>"Adobe, Flash, and HTML5 " but in this video he say Linux needs Adobe...
Go look at the marketshare of linux... do you have any idea how much market share linux has gained over 2 years? YOU have no idea.. but yet you act like a smartass. go do your homework. i hope u get paid well for this idiotic video. coz in my opinion its not even worth my 2 pennies... but yet you BASH google. MMM
you are so fucking RETARDED its not even funny. i have been using linux FOR 4 years and to be honest .. TODAY linux HAS BETTER GUI than both. idiot. KDE 4.xx and GNOME and XFCE is better than ur limited feature poor apple. i have no idea where u speak out of. GO USE LINUX MINT 8 MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT. AND TELL ME IT SUCKS.. USE IT ASSWIPE. USE IT FOR A MONTH. not enough money? GOOGLE apps is mostly opensource and its teh biggest internet company asshole. FIREFOX isnt POOR it is opensource.
LInux moves at slow pace? no innovation? go say that to Ubuntu openSUSE and FEDORA and linux mint ASWIPE WDF are u talking about? NVIDIa works better on linux than MAC / windows. RETARD BLAMe the assholes who work fo rteh 3rd party companies not linux. BLAME APPLE for not release an ITUNES app 4 linux. yet firefox (opensource is there 4 linux/mac/windows) same goes to GIMP and Openoffice. your companies are selfish.. open source is NOT. companies like adobe should release photoshop 4 linux.
lol dude you are wayyyy to obsessed over an Apple OS, computer is just a tool to get the job done.. haha don't cry, grab your Microsoft blankie and Google teddy bear, they'll comfort you :)
Take your fucking microsoft and apple software and shove it!
Apple is NOT the fastest and NOT the safest!
sure, it's hard to get virus on the apple, but u know why that is?? Maybe you should think about that first!
Do you even know what Open Source is??
You can Play games on Linux, more and more developers start developing for linux. linux is MUCH faster, MUCH more user friendly, and if you would want to, you can almost do anything with it!
It's funny how you take your freedom of speech for granted and being part of a free county, but you think all software shouldn't be the same.
Closed software is a thing of the 90's. Apple's own kernel is opensource and so is webkit, because they took them from the original openource version of them(Apple have no choice but to keep it open anyway).
Yes that's right., even Apple use opensource tech to get them where they're today.
i would have to say that ubuntu is easy to use for me and i am no expert (but only because of all the people on youtube that post the videos that walk you through stuff ) and i really like that it is free and more people should try it
I do have to hand it to you, your channel stats kick butt. Big Internet marketers would die to have your list and traffic. Myself included. Nice job...
You are too close to the flame, you need to get out from behind your Mac and go out in the real world and talk to the average computer user.
The average Joe only needs a browser. Unless you are a professional who needs the best you don't need MS or a Mac.
We blog in the browser on Wordpress. We connect with friends on Twitter, Facebook and Digg. Most email users use a web app. We read RSS feeds in Google Reader. Our best site traffic is from Google.
Exactly what I have been saying all along. Until you can run main stream programs easily on Linux it will not become "main stream" at least not to the extent as Windows or Mac.
Linux is great but some fans make it out to be far more than it actually is.
I agree with linux1man all the way........Stick to hunting your such a dumbass with your iMac...........all of your shows dont amount to shit........no body even gains anything from listining to your shit.........
Have you ever heard of HackToOwn contest? Mac was the first to have its security breached, then came Windows... Ones again deb packages == win, or mac installers in a way of easiness... Talk about development... All win 7 did is copy KDE4 look wise, and kept all the shit from vista... Linux has bad UI? WTF its UI is so good that you can make it into what ever you want...
Emeek, first, you CAN, I repeat, you CAN run Photoshop on Linux. Have you heard of Wine??? Crossover gets the job done better, but if you want free, use wine. Second, WHY THE HELL DO YOU THINK EVERYONE USES UBUNTU? I am on Fedora now. Third, you CAN make money with FOSS. Look at Red hat and Novell! Now, I personally see nothing wrong with selling software, I see something wrong with selling a crippled piece of shit that can't even run from a thumbdrive for $200! And we both know you hate linux!
I bet I can run Photoshop CS3 and cs4 in Linux in virtualbox what do you want to bet... I know I can I just did it. virtualbox runs great in Linux and it's free...
Now lets talk about what Mac OS and Linux can't run... Apple / Mac OS can't run 3ds Max high end 3D software used to make most 3D game for PS3, and X-Box ... The only way to run the new one on Mac OS ... is bootcamp even then it has a hard time with rendering.
You can INSTALL windows from a thumb drive. Not run it. You might be able to, but you will be greeted by 10,000 device driver messages, and will likely be started up at 800x600 with no sound. And I agree with maw88ify. You can run Photoshop in VirtualBox as well. GIMP works for me though.
I'm sorry but if Photoshop runs slow for you in VirtualBox than you must have one crappy computer, because I've been run 3DS Max in Linux in VirtualBox with almost no lag at all, and PhotoShop needs less power than that... Plus if I need a PhotoShop like App I could just use the free on-line software called >> Sumo Paint -a free online image editor ...
I am not saying photoshop lags I am saying I rather have it running at full speed than slower virtual box. There is no reason to use Linux, there is nothing cool about it at all because freebsd is 10x better.
BSD is not user friendly. It has an install is from hell that must be why they have a devil LOGO... It makes secure server , but it is not a user friendly Desktop environment. Many bsd users have to use a flash player from Linux, because BSD doesn't have a native flash player.
Who said I was using freebsd as a desktop Os? I use it as a little fileserver. Freebsd pwns Linux in every way as a server.
Windows and Mac Osx are king of desktop operating systems. Its all right to use Linux, but don't get off your high horse because Windows and Mac Osx are better for the general user market. I suggest you try BSD, once you start using it you will look at Linux and just laugh.
That is the point freeBSD is not better than Linux when it comes to being user friendly DeskTop environment. PC-BSD is more user friendly, it looks like a Linux distro.
I have BSD on a DVD, and I well play around with it more, but as of right now I like Linux for most of every day stuff, but I also have Windows 7. I've never seen a point to using Mac OS , but I have it to run in VMware, and to use in my next Hackintosh . I like trying new stuff and don't really hate any OS.
For end users Windows and Mac Osx does everything better relevant to them.
Web: Flash and firefox suck on Linux
Office: Ms Office and iWork pwn openoffice
User interface: Again overall Windows and Mac Osx have better interfaces.
Ease of use: even the easiest distro of Linux will require the terminal that is if you want packages that do not suck like Ubuntu's repo. Market is niche, it will not succeed in market share without changes.
I use it because I can. I almost never use MS office, but if I wanted to use it I can run it in Linux... The UI Linux and BSD can be change to look just like Mac OS with almost no work at all. "Mac4Lin Project" and you can add any Dock you like... I almost never need to use the terminal
I use what I like to use Linux for something, and Windows for other things... It doesn't matter to me who has big Market share I use what I like and more and more people are using Linux every day.
"ELSE First Linux Smartphone Demo from CES 2010" This Linux Phone kicks butt..
Linux still has a way to go, I searched Ubuntu ideas and on of the ideas got -37 because someone wanted to get rid of X11 in favor of something like Quartz and lin fags comments talked about how perfect Xorg is. I facepalmed from the ignorance and felt very sad for the Ubuntu community. They don't seem to want progress or a better Linux. You can't improve something that can not be improved like Xorg. I think getting rid of X11 would work because most major tool kits can be ported easily.
There was an error with the idea, but the sheer arrogance of the Ubuntu tards was just sad. I want Linux good as much as the next guy, and the first thing that must be done is kill Xorg.
Oh. BartPE? Completely forget the idea of the OS including TOOLS to do it. If you do get it running, it will likely be illegal. Windows has to install a device driver every time it gets a new device. Ever connect a new mouse? Now, imagine that on a thumbdrive going to a completely different PC. Pain incarnate.
Linux requires tools to install it on a thumb drive your point is? Well Windows license is supposed to stay on one computer, moving it to other computer breaks the EULA. Microsoft enforces the EULA with a friendly bluescreen with hex friends.
Oh, the old communism thing. Let's talk about communism, shall we? A quote from my site:
Microsoft is communism. You do not have nearly ANY rights under the microsoft EULA, exept to boot it and use your apps. Good luck getting to change the UI. If so, not only will they likely take you to court, they will terminate your license. I believe in software copyrights. I do NOT believe in software patents. It keeps people from making a good idea better.
The point of Linux is not to replace Windows for me...
I run both "dual boot" Linux and Windows it's just like most Mac users run BootCamp...
The point is it's the same damn thing Mac users do... the point is we don't need Mac, because we have Windows and Linux...
Mac OS would even be here if it wasn't for open source... That's right boys and girls Mac OS is just BSD or Linux with a price tag... Where do you think Apple gets it's code from... you got it open source...
@maw88ify Yes but the best parts of Mac Osx are not opensource. Apple Quartz vs Xorg hands down Quartz is better because it can Sync to VBlank. Xorg needs to die because its a piece of shit.
In avideo call "Troll Feeding with Dr.Arthur : The Linux Letters"
>>Darwin is an open source POSIX-compliant computer operating system released by Apple Inc. in 2000. It is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects.
>>Darwin forms the core set of components upon which Mac OS X, Apple TV, and iPhone OS are based.
>> This is from the Apple Web Site >> " Apple believes that using Open Source methodology makes Mac OS X a more robust, secure operating system, as its core components have been subjected to the crucible of peer review for decades. Any problems found with this software can be immediately identified and fixed by Apple and the Open Source community. "
>>So Apple say the best part is the Open Source it what makes Mac OS robust, and secure. Plus problems are immediately identified.
You say Linux is using 80's technology... What's wrong with that ? I mean isn't Unix the core of Mac, and BSD 60's / 70's technology ... Out with the old in with the new right ? So lets Kill Windows , Mac OS , Linux, BSD, all Unix , Plan9 Kill then all and start all over every year not building on any old technology, and lets see how far the world grows... It wont, it's slow to a crawl... everything slowly die ...
You completely misunderstand what I am talking about. I never said get rid of Linux but many parts need to be scrapped and rewritten. Microsoft made WDDM to fix their tearing problem with GDI. Linux only has a few hacks that get rid of most tearing but underneath is x11 which is an asynchronous protocol that should be scrapped. I did not say get rid of everything old, but X11 is a dead end. Microsoft scrapped longhorn for Vista because XP was a dead end and could not be fixed.
Well than it's a fair say Linux is not Perfect, I'll give you a point for that ;)
Mac OS , and WindowS all have flaws "imperfections" only fanboy would believe they were perfect ... So yes there are some things that could be improved...
You kidding? Apple has over 1100 vulnerabilities for Mac Osx. Secure my ass, using a old version of freebsd with old libraries does not give you a sticker of accomplishment. Linux security is not so good either, the NSA had to get involve and create SELinux to make Linux more secure. Also Security is a process not just a product.
-Stronger than OS X when you consider that you can install Mac4Lin + Wine and run software from any platform
-Just as easy to use as OS X or Windows
My computer ran Ubuntu without the need for any drivers besides one for my wireless card. Plus, Ubuntu has built in software to download anything that you need without even opening your browser.
I dual-boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu Karmic. With this setup, you can do anything.
Well OSX and Windows can do basically same things but i like OSX because it does things more elegantly than windows. I like little things like
-expose
-spaces
-quick look
-spotlight
I love the stock apps. Also VERY good keyboard shortcuts integration. You can do almost anything with keyboard shortcuts. You can't do that in windows.
Also Automator and Apple script.
It's funny how even Skype is much better in osx :D
So yeah, there's a lot of things i love about OSX.
Yes but that stuff is also in Linux... Linux has Expose as well...
Lixux has Compiz Fusion that has all the same stuff that Mac OS has... and More...
The only software that exclusive to Mac OS Final Cut Pro that is high-end that you can't get on other OS that's all... But Adobe Premiere / Sony Vegas are just as good... You know the software Adobe Premiere use to make the Avatar movie you can get that for Windows....
Yeah, you're going to have to tell me what you are talking about, because I don't use a Mac. The only thing I know about is expose. Forget stock apps, downloading something is free and takes about 2 seconds. I believe you can do anything in Windows with shortcut keys, and most of the shortcuts are the same on both systems. Any real things that you can do with an OS X machine but not on Windows? No Mac user has provided a sufficient answer.
Personally, I wouldn't work for free. I wouldn't spend hours writing code for a program that earns me no money at all. Paid apps have money put into them to get the best work from their employees. We work hard at our jobs to be recognized and to earn raises. Should or could some things be given away? Sure. But everything? That's a stupid idea.
Hmm, let's see - YouTube's a start. All Fortune 500 companies use Linux in at least one capacity. The majority of educational institutions, government agencies, many militaries, scientific and medical/pharmaceutical companies, and that list just goes on and on.
Let me say it again Maya3D is $ 5,000 dollars U.S. is made for Linux 64bit.... Renderman is also made for Linux... If you don't know what Renderman is look it up... It is soft ware Pixar's core rendering technology... That's right Pixar you may have heard of them ? So don't say there is no high-end software for Linux because there is, you're just haven't been looking that hard...Disney/Pixar, DreamWorks Animation, Sony, and Google all use Linux for many projects...
Google uses Linux for their servers, among other things. This guy is so ignorant, he thinks that we are against all commercial software. Quite the opposite.
You'll find a huge disagreement from me, opensource is one of the fastest and rapid development on Earth that no company can match and I enjoy using opensource even on my Mac, most stuff on my Mac are in fact opensource I just have way more trust in opensource than closed source software.
That's not really true. Compare the progress that open source apps like GIMP or Blender have done over the years with what Photoshop or Houdini have done. Commercial software are very often ahead of open source ones in development.
Nevertheless, there are awesome open source apps, like the underlings of OS X, but also Webkit, Adium, jDownloader, the Unarchiver etc.
There are many many more open source projects that are way ahead of close source alternatives, Truecrypt, SELinux, gcc, llvm (what builds everything you find on OSX), propolice, GPG, OpenMP, and the list goes on and on... and besides the majority of TOP500 are not running close source OS like Windows but opensource system.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
People use open source products -
BECAUSE THOSE PEOPLE ARE CHEAP!!!!
They're the type of people who say -
why pay for something when you can get it for free?!
Well - HERE'S WHY -
With open source products, NOBODY is held accountable. The products are not held to a standard of quality & if that producer of the open source technology doesn't feel like updating or releasing new versions -
Yep! Exactly! Buy a mac, and wait 3 months before you can safetly browse the internet again. =D =D =D
Buy a mac, with a video card (i.e. hardware) that supports 1080p, and get software that will cause any applications that output to those resolutions to crash/fail!
Then bug their support facilities about it. Wait years. And finally, get no compensation, and no fixed drivers!
(Its even move fun trying to help people with this problem in irc... they FINALLY learn).
First off FireFox is open source, and MS IE took ideas for firefox...
Next Mac OS is is based on BSD, the brother of Linux... and that make Mac OS partly made from the hard work of open source... and Windows gets ideas for open source as well... So are you saying Apple and Window are CHEAP because they took open source code to add their OS... GOOD your right Mac OS and Windows are CHEAP....
LMAO @ computer geeks talking about the way the world should be rather than how it is. Take an economics class. You can either pay for MS/Apple, or use Google and "pay" with some ads popping up....but frankly it's a choice for the user to make. There is no "bad" or "good" in any of it...it simply boils down to what people want. Ubuntu makes its money through tech support-is that bad? Who cares if Google is making a ton? Good for them. That what business and free markets is all about.
Your exactly right, but i already have 2 windows computers(i wish one of them could be an apple) and i am getting another computer that i need to wipe. It's not that great of a computer so i decided to put ubuntu on it just because i don't want to pay for windows 7. Give me your advice please
Lol worried about companies "acquiring a dominance" -- coming from a buyer of APPLE products ROFL wow. Put the words in the right place boy. (Just maybe shove them up your ass next time until you learn).
Linux is FREE - and you know what the best part is? Any of this shit that you bark on about... about how you "dont like this or that". Fine great. Guess what? You can CHANGE it with linux. You CANT with windows, or appleshit.
1) I am a developer. I have kernel commits in my name, and openvpn, and vlc, and mozilla.
2) Development is NOT slow. The linux kernel has about 10,000 commits every two 1/2 months. (500,000 lines of code per major release).
3) #2 was only about the KERNEL. To give you an idea how much FREE sotware is out there, gentoo's portage currently has 25,967 packages for linux. The kernel is only ONE of them.
Linux Vs Apple: Apple releases patches for public exploits in their java 3 MONTHS LATE.
The best smartphone which is the most secure, with tons of fantastic applications, and the full power of an iPod integrated. Who cares about multitasking when you ain't even got good apps.
"Simply put, iPhone apps, as a whole, are much, much better than Android apps," Siegler reports. "The Android Market has been around for over a year now, and the fact that there still isnt a Twitter app thats as good as the top five iPhone Twitter apps is a bit odd to me."
Multitasking is nothing big as of right now. And again, no other phone can compete simply because their apps suck compared to the iPhone's. Beside, perhaps the 4.0 iPhone OS WILL bring multitasking. What will you say then?
You've yet to substantiate why the mac is secure -- specially with 3-month-old public exploits in the open that apple is always late in patching.
"Best experience"... ooo... you must mean having your machine exploited and loaded with trojans, right?
Well, so long as we understand what you mean by best experience. After all, if your idea of best experience means letting all the pedophiles, stalkers, and frauds into your computer, thats your boat!
emeek you put two things together that you shouldnt do.
You don't have all Open Source on an Open Source OS like Linux.
There can be always close software too.
What Linux Users want is a close software port for all Adobe Software price like Apple OS/Windows or a bit higher cause Adobe will spend some time to port. Many Linux users don't want all software open source only some.
And you will never get open source software open if there are software patents in the software like Adobe has.
Eric, "open source" is not an OS, so please start talking in coherent sentences.
GNU/Linux is a FINE operating system for the average home user, provided they also purchase extended support for certain distros in the case of an issue.
Everything the AVERAGE HOME USER does can be handled easily and quickly on Ubuntu and most GNU/Linux distros.
Yeah somewhat true.. I do believe some-things to be open but it cannot replace a huge company like apple and microsoft but i do believe it cannot replace a massive OS.
I think what I like about Linux is that it's a very versatile OS which can be put on a variety of devices and computers from the small HTPC to huge Linux clusters. I do wish though that Linux would develop standards for drivers and start selling some professional made apps. I think if they did that more people would use Linux.
my main os is os x and is hands down the best, but im currently on ubuntu just trying to learn the best of every world. ive been on windows for yrs and i hafta say, i am never going back. if you have a non apple pc, i say install ubuntu and use wine to run windows apps. os x is just easy and everything just works
OS X has been made by getting together the best pieces of open source out there. It's an intelligent move that has put OS X light years ahead of Windows in terms of stability.
Other than that, applications, the UI, everything else has been done by Apple.
Today's Linux OSes are trying to copy both the Windows and OS X interface, with mediocre results.
Will you seriously shut the fuck up with "stability"? That's the only word you can say, and guess what? Windows is stable. Just because you can't use a computer, doesn't mean Windows is bad.
By the way, GNOME with Compiz is a better interface than Microsoft or Apple's. "Mediocre" is what they are by comparison.
@manjyoumethunder your going to say windows is stable, sorry buddy think of blue screen of death. Now blue screen of death comes out of no were turns off your pc damages software.... windows crashes 24/7 mac never crashes. stfu and get your facts
Excuse me? Do you even know what a Blue Screen of Death is, you misinformed Mac fanboy? It's an error screen to prevent damage to your computer from poorly written drivers or malfunctioning hardware. It has nothing to do with Windows being unstable.
As for "Mac never crashes", bullshit. My sister's Mac hangs up all the time, at least as often as any Windows based computer I use does. Get your head out of Jobs's pants.
The registry was ok for few apps, that's what it was designed for. Now it's a stupid database of crap, which gets bloated and broken within months, or even weeks.
If you ever studied about it you'd know.
If you use OS X or Linux wisely, you don't get any stability issues. While as for Windows, you can use it as well as you want but you will still get problems, as the registry knows no stoppage.
Compiz is useless. It's an interesting game, but nothing more. No productiveness.
Hey, if you go installing tons of shitty software from random developers like you apparently do, you're bound to have problems on any OS, not just Windows because of the registry. That's where "knowing how to use a computer" comes into play.
If I ever studied about it? Please, run along and play with your Objective-C programming manuals so you can make some cool iPhone apps.
Compiz is plenty productive, there's just a lot of features. You're apparently too stupid to use them.
Do you have any facts to back up your claims? apple couldn't even come up with their own OS, they took one made in the late 70's (BSD) dressed it up a bit and called it OSX.
linux copying the 'one GUI for all apple'?
linux has (to name a few) KDE, Gnome, XFCE4, Openbox, Fluxbox, LXDE, iceWM, WMaker, Blackbox, Enlightenment , Awesome wm, Xmonad wm, Compiz-fusion as different Desktop environments or window managers, how is that copying apple GUI?
And by the way the iphone isn't even a smartphone.
Apple didn't WANT to come up with their own OS. Microsoft did and look at what happened. They could use open source, great OS. UNIX was and still is the most robust and stable OS. Apple got the UNIX components for the stability, robustness and security, then added their own modern additional OS pieces, applications, UI etc.
The typical Linux UI is a mix of the windows taskbar (bottom) with the apple menu bar + start menu on top (with notifications icons on the right)
You mean apple couldn't come up with their own, linus torvalds did and look what happened, most of the major hollywood movie studios run linux not bsd same goes with web servers, supercomputers, small embedded devices etc...
Have you seen windows 7 taskbar? it's a copy of XFCE4's icon box plugin.
Have you actually used linux? (and i mean use it, not try one distro and call it quits)
you can make it whatever you want it to be, you don't have to rely on apple to tell you want you want.
They could, but why bother, when an open source OS was ready, and it was so good?
Major hollywood movie studios run Linux? And for what? Render slaves. All the video editing is done on Macs, 3D is mainly done on PCs OR Linux, but most of the times Linux is just used as render slaves.
I'm not talking about the windows 7 dock wannabe, I'm talking about the old taskbar.
Yes, I have tried Linux. Ubuntu, Fedor, Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS and a few others.
Yes, as I said sometimes Linux is used for 3D, including 3D special effects. Simply because it is cheap, much better than Windows and not as expensive as Macs.
What? Who do you think made all the pre-OS X OSes, the turquoise fairy?
IIRC I have tried Archlinux, and actually obtained some pretty much taskbars and dock-like things. Yet I'm not an artist, nor are the ones who've designed those interfaces, and I still couldn't one that is as good as OS X's. And no howtomakeitlooklikeOSX tuts pleas
I don't want to customize it. As much as I do, I never get what I want: something beautiful.
OS X's UI is gorgeous. It's been made by real artists, not mere programmers. I don't care if Apple forces me to use it or not (and can customize it anyway if I want), as long as it is beautiful. Art is Art. You can either get it or not. I get it. Maybe you don't.

I personally prefer Ubuntu over Windows. In my opinion, it works much better, its much more faster, i have more control over my system, and for me, it was very easy to learn. I started using ubuntu in Christmas, and i learned a lot about computers since then. Before i started, i knew shit about computers. lol

@FlamingLinux
The major linux distributions are by far, very easy to use. For me, much easier than Windows.
The only problem with some people starting linux that i didnt have, was that it wasn't something they were used to. Somehow, i was able to not even pay attention to Windows functions with Linux, but most other people aren't like that.
FlamingLinux 1 year ago
@FlamingLinux Linux from what i have seen was way harder to use years ago, but it gets simpler and more useful everyday or year. (Most noticeable with year)
Neverthe less, i like where the arguement is coming from. :O)
FlamingLinux 1 year ago
A lot of your claims are factually incorrect. Security-wise, Linux is much more secure than OSX: at hacking competitions, Linux typically performs very well in comparison to both OSX and to the various versions of Windows.
Secondly, you say that the speed of development in open source software is typically slow, but the actual numbers show that this is not the case. In fact, the opposite is true: open source projects often have more updates than do closed-source projects.
ZippoNick 1 year ago
Further, if you want to argue that Linux is only safe because of market share, then you clearly know very little about the web.
68% of web servers are run using Apache (open-source software!), the vast majority of these are on Linux.
only 21%, IIRC, run MS IIS.
You would think, therefore, that there would be a lot of malware exploiting security flaws in Apache and in Linux, because a lot of these servers are very desirable targets.
This is not what we find. We do find a lot for IIS, though.
ZippoNick 1 year ago
Now, your criticism that Linux is difficult to use was fair a couple of years ago. But try the major distros of Linux now-- many, such as Ubuntu, are very easy to use. In fact, I have more trouble using OSX than I do Ubuntu, but that's because I'm not used to OSX. Many people who have difficulty with Linux do so not because it's inherently more difficult, but because it's different from what they are used to. Sure, there are things that beginners will have difficulty with-- just like on any OS.
ZippoNick 1 year ago
Lastly, I find it amusing that you try to knock Ubuntu for "copying" Windows (a laughable claim, really) when OSX is just UNIX-- the very same system that Linux was modeled after.

whats wrong with windows 7 and vista?

Closed software is a thing of the 90's. Apple's own kernel is opensource and so is webkit, because they took them from the original openource version of them(Apple have no choice but to keep it open anyway).
Yes that's right., even Apple use opensource tech to get them where they're today.

Second, WHY THE HELL DO YOU THINK EVERYONE USES UBUNTU? I am on Fedora now. Third, you CAN make money with FOSS. Look at Red hat and Novell! Adobe photoshop cs3 and cs4 barely can run at all in Wine, and telling people Wine is an alternative to Windows is stupid.
Also Both Windows and Mac Osx can be ran on a thumb drive, but takes some extra steps.
IgnorantMacFannies 2 years ago
Have you ever heard of VMware, or VirtualBox ?
I bet I can run Photoshop CS3 and cs4 in Linux in virtualbox what do you want to bet... I know I can I just did it. virtualbox runs great in Linux and it's free...
Now lets talk about what Mac OS and Linux can't run... Apple / Mac OS can't run 3ds Max high end 3D software used to make most 3D game for PS3, and X-Box ... The only way to run the new one on Mac OS ... is bootcamp even then it has a hard time with rendering.
maw88ify 2 years ago 3
You can INSTALL windows from a thumb drive. Not run it. You might be able to, but you will be greeted by 10,000 device driver messages, and will likely be started up at 800x600 with no sound. And I agree with maw88ify. You can run Photoshop in VirtualBox as well. GIMP works for me though.

its possible to run Windows on a thumb drive if you are not a lintard.

So try again...
maw88ify 2 years ago
@maw88ify
sumo paint? LOL
I am not saying photoshop lags I am saying I rather have it running at full speed than slower virtual box. There is no reason to use Linux, there is nothing cool about it at all because freebsd is 10x better.

@IgnorantMacFannies
BSD is not user friendly. It has an install is from hell that must be why they have a devil LOGO... It makes secure server , but it is not a user friendly Desktop environment. Many bsd users have to use a flash player from Linux, because BSD doesn't have a native flash player.
maw88ify 2 years ago
Who said I was using freebsd as a desktop Os? I use it as a little fileserver. Freebsd pwns Linux in every way as a server.
Windows and Mac Osx are king of desktop operating systems. Its all right to use Linux, but don't get off your high horse because Windows and Mac Osx are better for the general user market. I suggest you try BSD, once you start using it you will look at Linux and just laugh.
IgnorantMacFannies 2 years ago
@IgnorantMacFannies
I like trying new stuff and don't really hate any OS.
maw88ify 2 years ago
Why would you use Linux or BSD as a desktop Os?
For end users Windows and Mac Osx does everything better relevant to them.
Web: Flash and firefox suck on Linux
Office: Ms Office and iWork pwn openoffice
User interface: Again overall Windows and Mac Osx have better interfaces.
Ease of use: even the easiest distro of Linux will require the terminal that is if you want packages that do not suck like Ubuntu's repo. Market is niche, it will not succeed in market share without changes.
IgnorantMacFannies 2 years ago

I facepalmed from the ignorance and felt very sad for the Ubuntu community. They don't seem to want progress or a better Linux. You can't improve something that can not be improved like Xorg. Oh. BartPE? Completely forget the idea of the OS including TOOLS to do it. If you do get it running, it will likely be illegal. Windows has to install a device driver every time it gets a new device. bendibell 2 years ago
Linux requires tools to install it on a thumb drive your point is? Well Windows license is supposed to stay on one computer, moving it to other computer breaks the EULA. Microsoft enforces the EULA with a friendly bluescreen with hex friends.

>>Darwin is an open source POSIX-compliant computer operating system released by Apple Inc. in 2000. It is composed of code developed by Apple, as well as code derived from NeXTSTEP, BSD, and other free software projects.
>>Darwin forms the core set of components upon which Mac OS X, Apple TV, and iPhone OS are based.
maw88ify 2 years ago
I know Mac Osx is based of Mach, I am saying the best parts of Mac Osx that makes it worth buying is closed like Quartz.
Quartz> Xorg
IgnorantMacFannies 2 years ago
>> This is from the Apple Web Site >> " Apple believes that using Open Source methodology makes Mac OS X a more robust, secure operating system, as its core components have been subjected to the crucible of peer review for decades. Any problems found with this software can be immediately identified and fixed by Apple and the Open Source community. "
>>So Apple say the best part is the Open Source it what makes Mac OS robust, and secure. Plus problems are immediately identified.

It really does not matter, if the kernel is opensource, What matters is what is not open source. Quartz.

IgnorantMacFannies 2 years ago
@IgnorantMacFannies
It wont, it's slow to a crawl... everything slowly die ...
maw88ify 2 years ago
@maw88ify

Ubuntu Linux is:
-Faster than OS X
-Safer than OS X
-Stronger than OS X when you consider that you can install Mac4Lin + Wine and run software from any platform
-Just as easy to use as OS X or Windows
My computer ran Ubuntu without the need for any drivers besides one for my wireless card. Plus, Ubuntu has built in software to download anything that you need without even opening your browser.

Well OSX and Windows can do basically same things but i like OSX because it does things more elegantly than windows. I like little things like

Lixux has Compiz Fusion that has all the same stuff that Mac OS has... and More...
The only software that exclusive to Mac OS Final Cut Pro that is high-end that you can't get on other OS that's all... But Adobe Premiere / Sony Vegas are just as good... You know the software Adobe Premiere use to make the Avatar movie you can get that for Windows....
maw88ify 2 years ago
Yeah, you're going to have to tell me what you are talking about, because I don't use a Mac. The only thing I know about is expose. Forget stock apps, downloading something is free and takes about 2 seconds. I believe you can do anything in Windows with shortcut keys, and most of the shortcuts are the same on both systems. Any real things that you can do with an OS X machine but not on Windows? No Mac user has provided a sufficient answer.

DrSunnz 2 years ago 2
That's not really true. Compare the progress that open source apps like GIMP or Blender have done over the years with what Photoshop or Houdini have done. Commercial software are very often ahead of open source ones in development.
Nevertheless, there are awesome open source apps, like the underlings of OS X, but also Webkit, Adium, jDownloader, the Unarchiver etc.
emperordarius 2 years ago
There are many many more open source projects that are way ahead of close source alternatives, Truecrypt, SELinux, gcc, llvm (what builds everything you find on OSX), propolice, GPG, OpenMP, and the list goes on and on... and besides the majority of TOP500 are not running close source OS like Windows but opensource system.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
People use open source products -
BECAUSE THOSE PEOPLE ARE CHEAP!!!!
They're the type of people who say -
why pay for something when you can get it for free?!
Well - HERE'S WHY -
With open source products, NOBODY is held accountable. The products are not held to a standard of quality & if that producer of the open source technology doesn't feel like updating or releasing new versions -
the consumer gets screwed!
When you pay for something -
9 out of 10 TIMES -
YOU GET RELIABLE QUALITY!
TimoJulz 2 years ago
I agree with you, since 9 times out of 10 is how often people buy Windows PCs over Macs.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
Yep!
Thats money well spent!

That what business and free markets is all about.

those people who want open source are those people who would own you in terms of using the computer...

Your exactly right, but i already have 2 windows computers(i wish one of them could be an apple) and i am getting another computer that i need to wipe. It's not that great of a computer so i decided to put ubuntu on it just because i don't want to pay for windows 7. Give me your advice please

You are a DUMBASS.
NONE of this video is supported by FACTS.
You CANT with windows, or appleshit.
jetdog440 2 years ago
change it? ha if you know how, if not your at everyone elses development rate. lol.
AppleSoldier 2 years ago
1) I am a developer. I have kernel commits in my name, and openvpn, and vlc, and mozilla.
2) Development is NOT slow. The linux kernel has about 10,000 commits every two 1/2 months. (500,000 lines of code per major release).
3) #2 was only about the KERNEL. To give you an idea how much FREE sotware is out there, gentoo's portage currently has 25,967 packages for linux. The kernel is only ONE of them.
Linux Vs Apple: Apple releases patches for public exploits in their java 3 MONTHS LATE.
jetdog440 2 years ago
So you mean I have to learn how to 'change' Linux just to be able to do what I do on my Mac? No thanks, I have other things to do.
emperordarius 2 years ago
No, I never said becoming a developer meant you had to know anything about Linux. I'm saying that under two circumstances:
a) That Mac/Apple were opensource, including kernel, drivers, software, and security.
b) You knew c. (you don't have to actually know linux ;>).
(^^Under those circumstances) you would be able to actually *change* what your mac does, and extend what it does.
Or, you could, say, watch smartphone ads and buy 800% overpriced mini-dvi adapters for the rest of your life :P
jetdog440 2 years ago
Yeah, but how may people have the intention of learning a programming language, let alone one as difficult as C.
Or I can, say, use the best smartphone in the world and get the best experience possible out of my Mac?
emperordarius 2 years ago
* the best smartphone that lacks any ability to multitask except for rudely during calls in single apps, making it particularly useless.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago 2
The best smartphone which is the most secure, with tons of fantastic applications, and the full power of an iPod integrated. Who cares about multitasking when you ain't even got good apps.
"Simply put, iPhone apps, as a whole, are much, much better than Android apps," Siegler reports. "The Android Market has been around for over a year now, and the fact that there still isnt a Twitter app thats as good as the top five iPhone Twitter apps is a bit odd to me."
"

emperordarius 2 years ago
@emperordarius
The full power of an iPod? Oh em gee, it plays music.
The Android market has plenty of fine apps, but even if it didn't, it doesn't excuse Apple from not having such a basic feature as multitasking.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
Multitasking is nothing big as of right now. And again, no other phone can compete simply because their apps suck compared to the iPhone's. Beside, perhaps the 4.0 iPhone OS WILL bring multitasking. What will you say then?
emperordarius 2 years ago
@emperordarius
Assuming the iPhone OS 4.0 does have multitasking, I will commend Apple on having finally added such an important feature to their smartphone device.
I find the apps on my Droid Eris perfectly fine, and plenty multitaskable. Try before you hate, dawg.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
lol *experience* as in exploitable experience?
You've yet to substantiate why the mac is secure -- specially with 3-month-old public exploits in the open that apple is always late in patching.
"Best experience"... ooo... you must mean having your machine exploited and loaded with trojans, right?
Well, so long as we understand what you mean by best experience. After all, if your idea of best experience means letting all the pedophiles, stalkers, and frauds into your computer, thats your boat!
jetdog440 2 years ago 2
emeek you put two things together that you shouldnt do.
Baumroder666 2 years ago
thats why open source is not a good primary os for a home user
AppleSoldier 2 years ago
Eric, "open source" is not an OS, so please start talking in coherent sentences.
GNU/Linux is a FINE operating system for the average home user, provided they also purchase extended support for certain distros in the case of an issue.
Everything the AVERAGE HOME USER does can be handled easily and quickly on Ubuntu and most GNU/Linux distros.

Yeah somewhat true.. I do believe some-things to be open but it cannot replace a huge company like apple and microsoft but i do believe it cannot replace a massive OS.

Open Source does not equal free.
zoulkyud 2 years ago 3
I think what I like about Linux is that it's a very versatile OS which can be put on a variety of devices and computers from the small HTPC to huge Linux clusters. I do wish though that Linux would develop standards for drivers and start selling some professional made apps. I think if they did that more people would use Linux.

my main os is os x and is hands down the best, but im currently on ubuntu just trying to learn the best of every world. ive been on windows for yrs and i hafta say, i am never going back. if you have a non apple pc, i say install ubuntu and use wine to run windows apps. os x is just easy and everything just works
redspade04 2 years ago
Even steve jobs himself said the OSX darwin kernel is very linux like, so who's copying who?
benjy288 2 years ago
OS X has been made by getting together the best pieces of open source out there. It's an intelligent move that has put OS X light years ahead of Windows in terms of stability.
Other than that, applications, the UI, everything else has been done by Apple.
Today's Linux OSes are trying to copy both the Windows and OS X interface, with mediocre results.
emperordarius 2 years ago
Will you seriously shut the fuck up with "stability"? That's the only word you can say, and guess what? Windows is stable. Just because you can't use a computer, doesn't mean Windows is bad.
By the way, GNOME with Compiz is a better interface than Microsoft or Apple's. "Mediocre" is what they are by comparison.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
@manjyoumethunder your going to say windows is stable, sorry buddy think of blue screen of death. Now blue screen of death comes out of no were turns off your pc damages software.... windows crashes 24/7 mac never crashes. stfu and get your facts
CTtutorials 2 years ago
Oh, and learn to write English.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
No, Windows is NOT stable. As long as the registry will be there, it will NEVER be stable.
I can't use a computer? Then how come I've never had any stability problems with either OS X OR Linux?
Yeah, Compiz is the king of the utterly useless visual effects.
emperordarius 2 years ago
@emperordarius
Windows is plenty stable, and all the registry is, is a centralized database of configuration settings. Hardly anything that would make it "unstable".
I don't get where you n00bs pull this shit out of your ass from.
No stability issue with OS X or Linux? You must be pretty fucking lucky then, because I know computer -experts- who can't say that.
And Compiz is the king of brilliant UIs.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
The registry was ok for few apps, that's what it was designed for. Now it's a stupid database of crap, which gets bloated and broken within months, or even weeks.
If you ever studied about it you'd know.
If you use OS X or Linux wisely, you don't get any stability issues. While as for Windows, you can use it as well as you want but you will still get problems, as the registry knows no stoppage.
Compiz is useless. It's an interesting game, but nothing more. No productiveness.
emperordarius 2 years ago
@emperordarius
You're apparently too stupid to use them.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
Do you have any facts to back up your claims? apple couldn't even come up with their own OS, they took one made in the late 70's (BSD) dressed it up a bit and called it OSX.
linux copying the 'one GUI for all apple'?
linux has (to name a few) KDE, Gnome, XFCE4, Openbox, Fluxbox, LXDE, iceWM, WMaker, Blackbox, Enlightenment , Awesome wm, Xmonad wm, Compiz-fusion as different Desktop environments or window managers, how is that copying apple GUI?
And by the way the iphone isn't even a smartphone.
benjy288 2 years ago
Apple didn't WANT to come up with their own OS. Microsoft did and look at what happened. They could use open source, great OS. UNIX was and still is the most robust and stable OS. Apple got the UNIX components for the stability, robustness and security, then added their own modern additional OS pieces, applications, UI etc.
The typical Linux UI is a mix of the windows taskbar (bottom) with the apple menu bar + start menu on top (with notifications icons on the right)
Compiz is useless. Game.
emperordarius 2 years ago
You mean apple couldn't come up with their own, linus torvalds did and look what happened, most of the major hollywood movie studios run linux not bsd same goes with web servers, supercomputers, small embedded devices etc...
Have you seen windows 7 taskbar? it's a copy of XFCE4's icon box plugin.
Have you actually used linux? (and i mean use it, not try one distro and call it quits)
you can make it whatever you want it to be, you don't have to rely on apple to tell you want you want.
benjy288 2 years ago
They could, but why bother, when an open source OS was ready, and it was so good?
Major hollywood movie studios run Linux? And for what? Render slaves. All the video editing is done on Macs, 3D is mainly done on PCs OR Linux, but most of the times Linux is just used as render slaves.
I'm not talking about the windows 7 dock wannabe, I'm talking about the old taskbar.
Yes, I have tried Linux. Ubuntu, Fedor, Linux Mint, PCLinuxOS and a few others.
emperordarius 2 years ago
Know your facts, Weta Digital, Industrial Light & Magic run linux, look it up on wikipedia and you will see how many movies where made using linux.
No they couldn't make their own OS, when has apple made something from scratch
I'm glad linus torvalds didn't share your thinking.
How about you try a distro that leaves the choices up to you, such as archlinux if you can
benjy288 2 years ago
Yes, as I said sometimes Linux is used for 3D, including 3D special effects. Simply because it is cheap, much better than Windows and not as expensive as Macs.
What? Who do you think made all the pre-OS X OSes, the turquoise fairy?
IIRC I have tried Archlinux, and actually obtained some pretty much taskbars and dock-like things. Yet I'm not an artist, nor are the ones who've designed those interfaces, and I still couldn't one that is as good as OS X's. And no howtomakeitlooklikeOSX tuts pleas
emperordarius 2 years ago
OK made something good from scratch
They use linux because it better not because its cheap, do you think hollywood its tight with money?
you sound like the kind of person who needs to be told what he likes or dislikes in which case apple probable suits you well
benjy288 2 years ago
I don't want to customize it. As much as I do, I never get what I want: something beautiful.
OS X's UI is gorgeous. It's been made by real artists, not mere programmers. I don't care if Apple forces me to use it or not (and can customize it anyway if I want), as long as it is beautiful. Art is Art. You can either get it or not. I get it. Maybe you don't.
emperordarius 2 years ago
@emperordarius
I fail to see how OS X's UI is gorgeous. It's a bunch of grey windows and taskbars with stoplight colored buttons and a single glassy dock.
manjyoumethunder 2 years ago
You don't get art then.
emperordarius 2 years ago
@emperordarius
... Grey isn't art. Maybe the wallpapers included with OS X are artistic, but that really isn't the "UI".
