Having been a Sabres fan for years, I remember this game very well. The Sabres were not a tough team, they were pushed around game after game.  Detroit ran Barrasso and Maguire, being the toughest Sabre, ran Greg Stefan. I think the reason Maguire fought Yzerman was to force the other Sabres to stand up and be accounted for. Just my opinion :).

I remember why this started and it's NOT cuz McGuire fought Stevie Y. Mem's a little fuzzy, but as I recall Wings were running Barrasso ALL night and the refs weren't doing SHIT about it. So, puck was dumped and only Mcguire was skating into the zone. Forget the goalies name, but he was behind the net to play the puck and McGuire never let up! Just R-A-N him haha (retaliation of course). What I didnt understand was why Stevie Y decided to go after McGuire when Probie was on the ice.

While I agree that Probert is the toughest dude that ever laced them up, you are way overrating Yzerman. Yzerman used to get 40-50 minutes of ice time a night. You could probably net 25 goals in the league getting that kind of time.
