Good fight but horrible ref, Perez. When Ali clinches, the ref never swats Ali's glove away from grabbing the back of his head. Considering how Frazier & his trainers mentioned this before this fight, as Ali was clinching behind Joe's head nonstop. The fight wouldve been way better if he didn't allow Ali to clinch behind the head and neck of Smokin Joe. That's the real reason Manila was so good, & that ref was relatively unknown & did a better job than Perez.

called clinching boxers are fine tuned athletes ali for example was known to run for 9 miles every day, but even boxers with there insane stamina can get tired thats the first reason to clinch.. another reason to clinch or hold on to eachother like you call it is to break the timing of your oponent.. stepping away from your oponent and try to hit him is not a good tactic.. i think one of the few who could actually do that is ali.. thats what makes him great ;)>

@SR0Penne0Brillo They use it to replenish a bit of stamina. Another reason is that if a boxer lands a clean punch, he may clinch to make sure the opponent has no chance to counter. In the last rounds, if a boxer is winning he might start clinching so that the opponent has a hard time going for the much needed ko. The last reason I know of is that if a boxer is fighting an aggresive opponent and has a hard time dodging and countering, he might clinch to stop the assault :)

When he bought me an old black n white video of the 70s fights between Ali, Frazier, Foreman and Norton I was transformed forever.
