You can see why Mutt decided to multi-track the shit out of Elliot's voice. He sounds so thin here. Hearing him live recently I thought he just "lost" it with age. But from the sound of this debut, he never really "had" it.
@termsofusepolice I disagree. I just reckon he hadn't found out he could be such a good singer. Because listen to him on live songs such as Stagefright, Rock Rock till you drop etc. He definitely doesn't have a thin voice.
@termsofusepolice I prefer this recording instead of all the bombastic electronic studio tricks and TONS of reverb that make it sound like 500 voices singing on the chorus and a snare drum that rivals a cannon going off. Can you say "overproduced" ? Sure, I knew ya could.
WTF are you whining about`?! Are you fans or not? ''They're not the same. '' '' They're style is sooo different.'' Or '' Where is Def leppard?'' I think they're awsome as the've always been. And the're album Mirror Ball is kickass if you ask me. ;) Def leppard is the best and always will BE:
They still had solos. Steve Clark was always way ahead of the rest. I agree thats a damn good solo though man. On through the night is one of the best albums
This album came out 30 years ago and, IMO, it holds up really well. When it originally came out Def Leppard instantly became one of my favorite bands. Listening now I can understand why I was so taken by them back then. What the hell happened to them???
@Gilmourfan11 - that's exactly what I've been saying all these years too. I believe it's been Joe's fault, he wanted to sell more, so much so that DL softened it's style. I've always wondered what would've happened if they had stayed with the hard rock of the first three albums.... they're still great, just not as great as they would've been....
@Gilmourfan11 Best Def Leppard album they ever put out. They were 15 and 16 years old when they recorded this record. I would love to see a re-mastered version of it. Absolutely their best record to date in my opinion.
@azumpire Agreed. For me it was all down hill from here. High... was a step down; Pyro was a bigger step down still; Hyst was just unlistentoable, i.e., it sucked! Pour Some Sugar on Me...indeed! Guess what Def Leppard? Way, way too much sugar.
DAMMMn I remember getting this album as a gift in 1989. At the time Hysteria was still playing loud on the radio. I remember I barely liked On Through The Night, I found it too heavy. I was 13 or 14. Now I re-listen to it and it sound amazing. Maybe my ears were missing the sound of heavy metal after all those years of pop and hip hop on mainstream radios...
i saw them a second time live a few months ago. I think joe voice was pretty good and hit notes good

The first song I ever played in a band, top twenty (at least) riff of all time - I bet hardly anybody in the states even knows this exists!

its weird listening to a song like this then a new one like "Undefeated" and you think to yourself "is this really Def Leppard?".

@trackerhunter Yep. Wish they'd kept Pete

another album - then I wouldn't have to change
