I just love this, Doc. Your salutes to Kirby, Cage, and Hanley had such perfect songs for each. I'll always be insanely crazy about Saunders/Morrow, but my eyes have been opened about Hogan/Kirby. Maybe RickJason was right and Hogan was the best actor?? It bugs me, the goldbrick/slacker image Kirby has when really, whenever someone's dragging another GI out under fire, it's Kirby doing it! He's loyal and brave. BTW, him sighting along the BAR at 2:48, nice shot! Hogan wears the role like skin.
He looks a bit like Toby Stephens, doesn't he? I've only just discovered this show (after watching every single episode of The Virginian and LOVING it) and must say, I'm ready for the transition from westerns to WWII! The trash on today should be boycotted! I can feel brain cells committing suicide whenever I find myself channel surfing. Thanks to everyone for sharing their classic TV and films! We who have taste and scruples salute you!
@gwt55 That IS very cool, though I have to admit it's pretty funny when Saunders (or Hanley) orders, 'Shut up, Kirby!' I think I'm gonna make a T-shirt...
From a five year old's perspective, watching Combat! with my father, I only remembered the Lieutenant with the beautiful sad eyes, the grumpy "Sarge", and the funny guy that made my dad laugh. Not much. I finally got the series at the library thinking I would pick a few and then return them. Now I am hooked. I have fallen in love with the entire squad! They brought back sooo many forgotten memories. Especially Kirby. I either wanted to whack him with a rolled up newspaper or rub his belly!
Actually it is not a Marine helmet cover. The helmet cover he is wearing is custom fabricated from a Camo parachute scarf. I've seen some pictures of guys using them, they a different from Marine camo.
@BANZITOMMY he wore a helmet liner ok for parades but you need a steel pot on top for battles probably cause a steel pot is heavy it could make your neck hurt acting in it all day he had 2 sub machine guns one was fake and lighter
ya know, there were times when we made it back off a recon and watched COMBAT,and thought,"shit,if we wouda watched this before we went out,we probably wouda come back a bit better off" the sarge is the sarge and theres nothing like a fully automatic 30.06 covering your six...rock and roll...out
I always like Kirby when I was a kid watching combat. I notice he carries a machine gun while the rest carries rifles. The way he fires the gun is cool too.
Jack Hogan (and Vic Morrow) were two of the finest actors to come out of the early 60's and Combat was among TV's finest series. The overpaid "stars" of today should watch a few of these episodes and collectively hang their heads in shame. Even the so-called "non actors" such as Pierre Jalbert outshine most of the modern celebrities. These people, from the writers to the producers and actors cared about quality.
Kirby + BAR = Trouble. Shoot, he was trouble without the BAR!! lol. I loved Combat! Tuesday nights. Channel 7, Detroit. I bought the DVD series and highly recommend it. Get whatshername's book, too.
OH. MAH. GAWD. Best fanvid EVAH! And I mean that - the music is oddly fitting and effective, and your editing is beautifully done. Rarely have my lady parts been made so happy by a mere bunch of pixels. You have given the world 6+ minutes of solid Kirby, and that bit at the beginning....I LOVE that episode. Better than 95% of the war movies ever made.
Jack Hogan is still with us. Living somewhere in North Carolina. Hogan is also a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and served on its alumni committee. He is also runs a well established business too....a locally owned and operated dairy farm located just outside Chapel Hill,North Carolina.
Excellent!!!! I think it was Rick Jason that said that the best actor in their cast is Jack Hogan, and that's saying a lot with a cast that includes Vic Morrow.
This is great! Kirby's the man! I belong to an online gaming clan that plays Battlefield 2. My online name is *DBH*Kirby in honor of Jack Hogan a.k.a. Kirby, William G.
KIRBY!!!!!!!!!!! TAKE THE POINT-LOL. YEAH loved the show. The BAR weighed about 20lbs with 6 fulls mags thats a load. Even the Thompson was a load with a few 30 round sticks.
Kirby was the perfect "Private". Smart ass, wise cracking and a whiner. then as the show progressed they show him harden up, especially when he gets trusted with he BAR. he became such an asset to the squad

Combat! was a good show but Kirby {Jack Hogan} ruined because he never carried the B.A.R. like a man. Real B.A.R. men never wrap the strap around them.
hedujg26 ... Your comment is very offensive. As a former infantryman, I have had the honor and privilege to patrol with 'real men'. I can assure you that 'real men' DO use their slings. Patroling exhausts men physically and emotionally. Using their slings does not lessen them as men; it merely gives them an opportunity to relax their arms. After awhile at port arms the muscles begin to cramp. You shift your carry position, use your sling, ANYTHING to reduce the weight.
Hedu is right they never carried the B.A.R. like that and Dwyight thank you for your service but my great grandfather was a Marine and he told me that B.A.R. men never carried it like that
