The windshields in a GE go straight across and the ones in the EMD are slanted down at the outer bottom corners. The body in front of the windhields slant the same. That's how I tell at a glance.
There are a number of ways, but the way I taught myself was to look at the wheels. If you can see most of the wheels below the axel, it is probably an EMD. Most newer GEs (Dash 9 and up) have the HiAd (steerable trucks are different but you still can't see much of the wheel) trucks with a bar below (makes it look like ice skates) the axel with 2 springs on either side. The other easy indicator is the fuel tank on the right side of GEs, there are 2 air tanks kind of wedged on the top. Make sense?
@LearnWithGern close, but not quite true....most newer GE's don't have HiAd trucks....BNSF, UP, NS, and CN don't have them with HiAd trucks. CSX and CP are the only companies that have ordered some, but not all of their modern GE fleets with HiAd trucks. Most new GE's still have the standard trucks.
yah probly, they only use the EMD's in the yards here. I was luckey kuz i probly caught one of the last trains with EMD locos here in my area on video. I never see them anymore. not in the past year anyways.
yah they made me wear ear plugs lmao. I knew a yard worker so they took me on a tour of the Queensway Intermodal Yard in toronto. We got to drive one for a little while lol and yah it is loud.

A G.E.'s radiator wings usually end in the very back while and EMD's radiator wings usually are either up further or don't have them at all.

@sarge2906 there are a thousand ways. Sounds, truck styles, cab styles, fuel tank style, radiator styles, etc. That's just the obvious ones.
