@ptangboy Uh...no. Many notable chess games have been repeats of other games. All it takes is for a player to encounter a line he hasn't seen and then resign...bam, duplicate game. Chess really doesn't have that many options, and given the number of games that have been played there have been many duplicates we don't even realize.
SF is many, many orders of magnitude more varied. Ever 1/60th of a second is a "move" in SF. Games of SF really are like snowflakes.
@ptangboy Just to clarify: Sirlin is right about the variety of possible chess positions. But only a fraction of a percent of those positions are seen in real games, and those few positions are seen over and over and over. The first 20 moves is just formula, no thinking involved, when you're talking high level play.
Making sure you have the first 20 moves figured out for all the notable lines is part of preparation, and most good players play a handful of "best" responses.
@Meatballer First off we don't need the parry system again, if you like that play 3S. Also, All players started out as young scrubs there is nothing wrong with a game bringing more people into the community because having a lot of people is a good thing.
actually i heard that Gerry Kasparov (chess GM) played one match in Brazil that shocked many people. he sacrificed his Queen and ended up mating his opponents King, 18 moves later. it blew me away.
hes right isnt he? who wouldnt play to win? who says he has to be nice anyways? hes a human not a robot. and its not like hes like im david sirlin and i kick ass and u fucking SUCK! he acknowledges some poeple arent as good as the game as others. in other vids he even admits he isnt that good and bows to other players. he has no reason to be nice, and he isnt mean in the first place.
plusss. what about that background? its like the exposition of a frank miller novelXD
Quote from his writings that support the notion that he's a dickhead:
I once played a scrub who was actually quite good. I gave him the best advice he could ever hear. I told him, “Play to win, not to do ‘difficult moves.’” This was a big moment in that scrub’s life. He could either ignore his losses and continue living in his mental prison or analyze why he lost, shed his rules, and reach the next level of play.
Wait, then what the hell are those grandmasters doing when they take sometimes up to an hour before they make a move? Are they just stalling for time, waiting for their intuition to kick in or something?
There are tons of different options in chess. The one thing you don't want to do in a high level chess game, is just move a piece because you thought it was right. You have to think about all of the possible angles, and what consequences you might have to pay for what ever piece you decide to move.
Chessmasters not being able to see 10 moves ahead? Not knowing exactly piece by piece of the moves? Playing by intuition? These ARE ALL WRONG
First off. Chess is about looking into the future.. if i take, he takes, i take, he takes, ect. Why do you think GMs resign? Bc they can see ahead that they're gonna lose or get checkmated.
Second. They play in Blindfolded matches.. enough said.
Third. Chess is about CALCULATIONS.. not Intuition.
I think it is clear that what he meant was "Chessmasters are not able to see every possible combination of moves, 10 moves ahead". You even go on to agree with this yourself. "Chess is about looking into the future.. if i take, he takes, i take, he takes, ect.." Chess Grandmasters are able to predict that if I do 'this', he *will* do 'that'. They do not number crunch the optimal move ten moves ahead for every combination of their opponents' moves.
@crushanator When they calculate xMoves ahead they look at whats optimal and whats best.. not EVERY POSSIBLE (useless) MOVE. Lets say my opponent is working on a mate.. I'll think about how to stop that. I wont think about moving a random piece to a random location (which'll do completely nothing for my position)
And for your information they do think that DEEP of a level. When you see grandmasters sit there thinking for 40 minutes, do you think they're thinking ONLY 5 or less moves ahead?
"In chess, the possibility space of all possible… all possible chess games is like, absurdly large. I heard some statistic once that if… if every particle in the universe were made into a processor that could process a bit of information per second, and you had the whole thing rigged up as a parallel computer that it could not, uh, go through every chess position until longer than the length of our universe has been in existence. I-it’s th-that big." -- David Sirlin, 2010
@SELG88 That was one game, sure. He was lead designer for some remix games like that and the puzzle strike remake, as well as original stuff like Kongai. I hear he's working some personal stuff now. In any case, he's obviously a game designer.
@Lofobal He isn't pretentious as much as he is condescending. In his writings he places such heavy emphasis on the concept of 'If you aren't playing to win, you're a SCRUB.' He just sounds like a snobbish asshole and so would anyone else if they were so brutally focused on winning a video simulation of fighting.
Oh God, I can go on and about this discussion also, SF v Chess. What really does matter in both games is that you ultimately understand that it is about you impossing your will on your opponnent and how to come about it.
For the first 22 seconds of the video I couldn't pay attention to what he was saying because I got mad transfixed on the ambient noises of the rain and sirens.
I thought it was actually thundering outside because it's been stormy here with loud ass thunder and a few minutes before I started watching the video there were ambulance sirens down the road. For the first 20 seconds I just zoned out and was looking at my window expecting to see flashes of lightning then I realized it was just the video and felt mad dumb.

"a bit of information per second" ? a single core nowadays does billions of calculations per second.. 64 bits. not 1 bit.
