@ptangboy Uh...no. Many notable chess games have been repeats of other games. All it takes is for a player to encounter a line he hasn't seen and then resign...bam, duplicate game. Chess really doesn't have that many options, and given the number of games that have been played there have been many duplicates we don't even realize.

SF is many, many orders of magnitude more varied. Ever 1/60th of a second is a "move" in SF. Games of SF really are like snowflakes.

@ptangboy Just to clarify: Sirlin is right about the variety of possible chess positions. But only a fraction of a percent of those positions are seen in real games, and those few positions are seen over and over and over. The first 20 moves is just formula, no thinking involved, when you're talking high level play.

Making sure you have the first 20 moves figured out for all the notable lines is part of preparation, and most good players play a handful of "best" responses.

There are tons of different options in chess. The one thing you don't want to do in a high level chess game, is just move a piece because you thought it was right. You have to think about all of the possible angles, and what consequences you might have to pay for what ever piece you decide to move.

First off. Chess is about looking into the future.. if i take, he takes, i take, he takes, ect. Why do you think GMs resign? Bc they can see ahead that they're gonna lose or get checkmated.

Second. They play in Blindfolded matches.. enough said.

Third. Chess is about CALCULATIONS.. not Intuition.

I think it is clear that what he meant was "Chessmasters are not able to see every possible combination of moves, 10 moves ahead". You even go on to agree with this yourself. "Chess is about looking into the future.. if i take, he takes, i take, he takes, ect.." Chess Grandmasters are able to predict that if I do 'this', he *will* do 'that'. They do not number crunch the optimal move ten moves ahead for every combination of their opponents' moves.

@crushanator When they calculate xMoves ahead they look at whats optimal and whats best.. not EVERY POSSIBLE (useless) MOVE. Lets say my opponent is working on a mate.. I'll think about how to stop that. I wont think about moving a random piece to a random location (which'll do completely nothing for my position)

And for your information they do think that DEEP of a level. When you see grandmasters sit there thinking for 40 minutes, do you think they're thinking ONLY 5 or less moves ahead?
