Cliff Gallup used a DuoSonic and James Burton did use Rickenbackers for a period during the Ricky years when he was endorsing them. Danny Cedrone was merely copying his solo from "Rock the Joint" because the Comets had half an hour to record Rock Around the Clock which was originally the B-side.
@JediHarrison You can play any rockabilly solo or song on a solid body. Alot of guitarists use semi-hollow because of the warmer tone and a richer, deeper sound. Many Rockabilly guitar players used solid body. F Beecher from Bill Haley's Comets used a Les Paul. J Meeks from Gene Vincent used a Strat as well as Buddy Holly. Also J Burton from Ricky Nelsons band and P Burlison from J Burnette used Tele's. Most important these songs can be played on any guitar, its really up to the player
Great tutorial.Ive been playing around with the 3rd part of that lead since you still would say album but always come back to the block chromatic thing.Just sliding down one finger(can actually be any finger)from the b,f#,d,a,e,b strings in what i guess would be called a glissando sounds cool too, using an open string at the end of each string, same as the intro lick almost. If you watch any footage of Danny Gatton he did this kind of thing a lot.Either way is right. Just has to sound good.
Thank you for the Brian Setzer version of "Summertime Blues" lesson you did! Awsome vids...thank you for teaching a guy who has been trying to learn the guitar for 20 years how to play this great song! Rock around the clock is next on my list....
Nice lesson. I've been trying to learn this for months but it's just too fast for me. I can play it note for note at about a third of the speed. Just gotta keep at it I guess.
How weird. I'm sitting here working on the same solo. I thought to myself. "I wish Damian had a lesson on this solo". You literally posted this video within minutes of me thinking that!!
I have the tabs for this in a songbook called the Rockabilly Guitar Bible. That last chromatic run in the book has it a little different than how you teach it. It goes by so fast that it's hard to tell the difference but in the book it's only chromatic until the D note 7th fret. The rest of it is major scale.
@tomthefunky Ha..That's to funny. Years ago I think I have seen some tabs on this solo. and they show the last lick, maybe a little different. I have tried to play it a few different ways for years, and it's funny the way I played it for a long time was more like the one you have. But when I played them fast, I just thought this way sounded better and probably correct. I have been listening to alot of Danny Cedrone's stuff lately(mostly outside of his comets stuff). I just love his playing.
@Damianblf: Damian, I have been trying to get that last run for years! I think I like your way better. It seems easier and the differences are really to minimal to notice.
Oh yeah, pretty soon I'm gonna get your instructional DVD so expect me to be in contact with you in the near future.
@lilroach226 Hello, check out my rockabilly guitar lesson 2(in the style of Cliff Gallup). He was the original guitarist for Gene Vincent. I think you might enjoy that one. My guitar is a Gretsch Brian Setzer Nashville.

Hi, man. Is it important to play this on a semi-hollow guitar? How would it sound on a solid body?
