  • His voice had started to wobble by this stage, and he starts scooping to maintain pitch. The legato becomes broken as a result, as he rounds off phrases sloppily.

That B is SO strained at the end. I have no idea why he took on such a heavy role.

  • Carreras sings great!!

  • H…

  • I like your videos...

  • Great!!!! thanks for posting and sharing this wonderful videos!!!!.Been a tenor, and doing the same repertoire, this videos help you in getting a better approach to voice mastery. Please don't listen to crazy comments, we all enjoy and thank you.Carreras, even if been a "short range tenor", manages to get all the beauty of his voice, help him in delivering a very good performance of this very difficult aria. Bravo Carreras!!!!

  • se non altro decorosa, ma nulla più

  • Cantante favoloso, ma non in questo ruolo

  • for me he is simply divine.

  • I like Carreras, but here his voice was pretty much gone.

  • no...

  • This aria is in b flat major.....

  • No c major.

  • joeleole if cbmolle is c what is c then

  • Bravo! Such passion!

  • Great rendition of J.Carreras. Thanks for posting.

  • B# is C...

  • Eso No es un DO!!!!!!!!

  • 5 stars,as usualy for Carreras!!

  • guys, i dont care who started this "argument", but dont do it on a video of carreras. if you do not like him, that is fine, dont go posting it on a video of carreras simply because you dont like him. dont bother watching it in that case, dont bother commenting. if you dont like domingo, there is no damn need to post this view on a video of jose carreras, nobody asked for a comparison!what makes a tenor good is only opinion and we need to learn that peoples opinions differ.hand in your man card!

  • And Plácido Domingo?

  • Inquisitive jerk! undrestand at last, that nobody is intereste in your foolish opinion about Jose Carreras and nobody agrees with you our wretched jester!

  • Jose I´ll always love your voice even if you sing pieces which don´t suit it...

  • You are ill my jester and need a very proffesional help of doctors (doctors and not doctor).Living in crap you have mirages of crap everywhere, besides. I am pumping my muscles and I am pumping my brain, follow me and train too, may be it will help you to overcome your complexses and help you to outlive in your desperate life!

  • Inquisitive jerk! You are so wretched. Beeng Bodybuilder means to be gay really?! But I know that living among gays, hookers and simillar aspects you have mirages, that all people around you are gays and hookers.

Tbilisi is the nice city of roses and the Sun,

But your N.Y. is a biiig black crap!

Gay parades, Stip bars, Ghettoes, are typical ellements of your city.

Whole districts of homeless children and beggars also.

  • Inquisitive idiot! I see you can not grow calm, so go to Mike Tyson's and ask him to hit you as he can and may be the devil in your head will leave you!

  • You are desperate and helpless inquisitive jerk. Now you don't sleep at all and are waiting for my comments as criminal waits for his verdict. Take some valerian caps and drink a cold water, then whatch a cartoon Tom and Jerry and go to sleep!

  • Why don't you guys just pound each others butts and get it over with.

  • And if Carreras' singing is limited it's not my fault LoL

  • The only thing is limited here is your mind wretched jester. You need a help of doctor and priest!

  • Tenor-Go tell that to the Georgian Buttboy Sandrik, who due to his latent gayness, took my comment about Carreras's poor upper register too personal and was cursing at the US and Americans. I am just slapping him around a bit. So don't be so trigger happy, and try seeing the while picture.

  • Hey American cowboy, did you food your cows? They were so hungry! Only thing is poor here it is your feeble comments. You and Opera are absolutly different fruits. O.k. I am gay (only because of my interes of bodybuilding) so inquisitive jerk get ready I like to fuck such a wretched jerks as you are. Here comes Daddy Shala cucarella sha la la la!

  • I don't expect flowers from you. You are a crap and trash, so we recieve only crap and trash from you, but I warn you, go to your father's dampy farm and poop on him and leave trash in your mother's garden! Once idiot will be idiot till the end of his time, so go back in your crappy farm and wash asses of your cows!

  • People share and watch these videos due to a passion for opera. Criticism is fine, but personal insults about heritage or linguistic skills crosses the line of decency. We should all applaud the fact the people from around the world can share and discuss these live performances, so let's keep it civil. Thanks.

  • Sandrik-You sould not talk about trash and dump. Just look out your window. You live in a crappy country called Georgia. Now crawl back into the crap hole from which you originated and collect some food coupons.

  • Heriocal version? You need a clue and one half! But your statement surely shows how limited your knowledge is. The other day you were suggesting that this aria ends with a C5 too, which it does not. As if Carreras ever had a top. He's struggling with a B here. This is a rather pedestrian rendition but you're too obsessed with Carreras to know better. Now crawl back to the crap hole in your crappy native Georgia and collect some food coupons

  • You wretched jester! How upset were you when I talled you, that even your Pava could not take high C?! You are limited complitly, the only hing you are able to do in your wretched life is to trash, poop and insult. You are not a man you are a provocation! get out from yt and poop somewhere else!

  • This is the most heroical version of this aria from nonheroical tenor and second herocal after Mario Del Monaco!

  • Sandrik-Struggling with basic English? Now crawl back to the crap hole in your native Georgia which you inherited from your submissive ancestors and hope that you will make it through the next winter by the benevolent "donations" of others.

  • Hey stupid jerk. as much you move so more you sink in damp, once you'll eat it!

  • Mechise-Never mind the C5. Carreras didn't have much of a B4 either. But his singing has more fundamental flaws before his lack of a solid upper register should even be considered. The gulp as his moves through his passaggio is just one such example.

  • Throaty voice, too bad.

  • Guys (and ladies)...on a lighter note, do a search on YT with "Carreras Rooster". It's hilarious.

  • We'll search for your medicaments!

  • The finale, which is the climax, is poor. Takes away the magic of this beautiful aria.

  • I don't like his throaty voice. And transposing is not something I favor either. If you cannot sing it the way it is meant to be, do not bother singing.

  • Agree with you!

  • Yes, to Mcknighty, I have read that about Verdi. So what's with all this high C hype anyway? Personally, I really like Carreras in this. I have listened to the entire recording he made of Il Trovatore, and although I admit it isn't exactly suited for his voice, I think he sounds great! Very exciting! Thank you, coloraturafan!

  • just like to point out, he did not transpose this aria down. Verdi never had a C written in this aria. He writes very few Cs, as he thought they made most singers hesitate and miss the note.

  • He was singing this as is common these days. Had he sung it as written (I have a version of Domingo singing it as written), it wouldn't count as transposing, but here he isn't singing in C major, so it's transposed.

  • He lacks the ease of the high notes for this aria, 3/3

  • How Sad Both Carreras and Domingo are both regarded by many as the Greatest Living Tenor's when neither 1 of them could hit a High C always had it transposed down a half tone and still Jose struggled with the High B his expressions are hideous looks like he has a bad case of constipation. To bad all the Greats are now gone with Corelli and Bonisolli both dying within a Year of each other. No more Franco's and no more Mario's. Di Stephano is still alive at 86 he probably sounds better than Jose.

  • Corelli and Bonisolli died on the same day, if my memory serves me well...in October of 2003. Di Stefano has passed away, he died this March. The greatest living tenor is probably Bergonzi.

  • Corelli died Oct29th and Bonisolli died Oct 30th 2003 just one day apart, What a shame ! They were probably with the exception of MDM the greatest Dramatic Tenors ever to grace a Opera Stage. I had not found out that DiStefano had passed when i wrote my last comment. I don't agree that Bergonzi is the greatest living Tenor he's very old now as is Gedda, i would have to give Rolondo Villazon the top tenor spot with Alvarez a close 2nd and Alagna 3rd.

  • Caruso and Gigli never had a C5. They sucked?

  • Gigli had a strong high C and vocalized even higher.

  • He used the C very sparingly.

  • That's true, a high C was not considered manly nor was it popular during the time of Caruso and Gigli. Jose does have a unique natural beauty to his voice but this is certainly not a role for him.

  • Transposed down, yes, but he was a fine, fine Manrico. His spinto style suited Verdi so well. He creates more excitement here than Bergonzi, but both are in the absolute top tier in this role, in my view.

  • 4/4

Transposed down a half step and still struggled with the B. I must admit however I rather like his voice and style of singing.

  • Not suited for his voice, and he was a bit late on an early note

  • admitted, carreras's voice isnt tremendously suited to this role and its lowered half a step, but i love carreras and this was a still a great performance

  • 5/5 I love Jose, even if his voice isn't meant to sing this piece.

  • Contest? I'm getting sick of this - is singing a sport or an art? You seem to think big is best - I reckon it's a homo-erotic fantasy.

  • Isidore98, contests don't necessarily imply a winner, and therefore your theory of "biggest is best" doesn't apply. I have a wonderful idea, and yes it's a HOMO-erotic fantasy of mine: if you don't like my videos of my contests, KISS my (fill in the blanks genius!)

  • Accepted

  • HIG B's but thats ok many-- even Corelli live and Del Monaco did B's sometimes, even on recording Del Monaco is a B and Bjorling live later in the 50's SANG A B AND TUCKER AND MANY OTHERS BUT THIS IS NOT A BIG VOICE, I HEARD HIM SING TOSCA AND IT CARRIED ALRIGHT, IN 1975 I BELIEVE IT WAS AND IT WAS IN CALIF. NILSSON WAS TOSCA SO HE HAD TO CARRY! HE HELD HIS OWN! YES.

  • Not a voice for this. His top was small and his voice was small and tried to sound louder like Giusepe Di Stefano. Bad singig techqnique and a lot of publicity...

  • ok, lucky he. envious?

  • One of my former teachers sang in an opera with him before his illness and said that his low- mid range was big but his top wasn't that big. Great voice though.

  • Well... I think your teacher was right... he had not just tiny top notes but almost had not high notes because he used to puch ALWAYS his voice trying to sound louder than he is. SPinto or dramatic soul but not a voice for that. I am 101% convinced that his ill was not the cause of his voice damage.

  • Very good, i am surprised, but still not perfect 4/4

  • The final notes are C-s!!!

  • It's transposed down to B.

  • He was about to crack on the first B (now, was it a Bnatural or Bflat?)

  • 4/5 bravo

  • That final note is a B right?

  • yes...and a pretty good one at that...his voice is youthful, no wobble, and before his illness, when he was still one of the worlds best tenors.

  • love it 4/5

  • I would have loved to hear his Ah si ben mio! I bet he was out of this world! This is great of course, I mean he was one of the THREE tenors ;-) 5/5

  • José in the prime of his career (before his illness occured?). He does it well though his voice is more suited for lyric role's. 4/4

  • so many things he could have done without ruining his amazing voice. 4/5

  • He puts this aria over, but just. You can tell he is forcing. 4/4

  • Not bad. This is one of the reasons his career went Stefano-like (vocally), took heavy roles too soon. 3.5/5

  • Nice, he deserved his place among the legendary three tenors (Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras). The high notes are slightly forced. Mark: 4/5

  • Holy! WOW! Pushing or no, this is so frigging THRILLING! I envy you for having this! 4.5/4.5

  • La voz más bonita del mundo. The best voice of the world

  • 4/3. I'm going to give everybody 3 for characterization, since I don't think this aria gives much opportunity for it. I could tell more if Ah Si Ben Mio was included.

  • I agree the aria would have been nice also, but the clips would have been long, in some cases too long for youtube. True there isn't much "music" to go on here, but it does display some wonderful singing. However, I would have to disagree, I think this cabaletta gives the tenor a good chance to display character, and many of these tenors do a great job at that.

  • coloraturafan, let me take this opportunity to thank you for all the work you put in on these contests. They're so much fun! I wasn't intending to criticize you, I guess I'm just not that big a fan of DQP...

  • 4/4

  • 4/4

  • 4.5/4.5

  • Geez....such an exciting voice, even if it's pushed a bit here he sounds AMAZING. He was such a freakin' animal at his best. His voice when he was in his prime is probably one of the best ever. 5/5
