A lot of these bands emulate DT (not Queensryche, Pain of Salvation and the like) and so you call those bands overrated too.

shadow gallery is even better than D.T. and Aspera too by the way....D.T doesnt create anything...is only a mix between rush and yes with another sound...pains of salvation is more interesting...to hear...and even some records of angra...bands like twinspirits....Atmosfear...Ark­...etc. im with you DT is SOOO overrated...people think that petrucci is god ...what about michael harris?

I love Dream Theater. I know a lot of people have a problem with James Labrie's voice but personally I'd take his voice over most of these dungeon-dragon vocals. No offense, it just gets old if it's every single band like most of these.

i wouldnt call dt overrated. they definitely deserve the credit they get. but i would agree than they've kinda become the stereotypical prog metal band. i mean, if you mention prog metal the first band people think of is dt. THERE'S A LOT MORE OUT THERE!!!

You see, that's very subjective and called "taste".

I like PoS more than any of the above bands, and I'd place Cynic at about the same level as DT, and that only because DT used to release quality albums a long long time ago.

And quite a few other bands are somewhere around "there" atm; not to mention I&W and Awake are the only albums from the above mentioned bands that would perhaps just make it into my top 10 metal albums.

But like I said, this is something called "taste".

Pain of Salvation is just plain amazing.

I personally would put Metropolis part 2 up there. Even though it's obvious, I think it belongs in there. Not so much the other albums.

...But I'm talking about Pagan's Mind, Queensryche and Mindflow in terms of musicianship. It's a bit hard to say "Pagan's Mind's 'Enigmatic: Calling' blows Opeth's 'BWP/Still life/Deliverance' out of the water". Of course there are different tastes, I'm just personally talking in terms of melody, which is my taste.

I already knew all these bands lol. I think CM are good but over-rated, and Shadow Gallery have some mind-blowing instrumentals but their lyrics are cheesy as hell. I really like Dreamscape though.

I personally think that Dream Theater is an incredible band, but my main frustration is their fanbase - how they think they've seen it all once they reach DT. Every band brings something new to the table, and progressive metal has so many other promising artists.

Yes, it's probably because a lot of Dream Theater fans are just metal fans, so when they hear Dream Theater, they probably just assume they are just a crazy metal band or something.

@Keyboardzrock I do think DT is a phenomenal band but as a DT fan I recognise there are many great bands out there who are on a par as musicians - love Vanden Plas, Symphony X, Porcupine Tree, Threshold and more recently Haken whose debut Aquarius is frankly phenomenal so us DT fans are open to other music - I don't think DT are overrated! The problem is that some of the other bands are UNDERRATED!- I only discovered Threshold and Vanden Plas last year - they've been around 20 years or so!!

I love this series, and it helped me discover one or two great metal bands out there that I wouldn't really have thought of listening to... here are some ideas you might consider if you plan on expanding this series

Disillusion, Back to Times of Splendor (prog/melodic death; I personally don't like death metal, but this album is simply too good)

Oblivion Awaits (watch?v=dzp8isg48yA ; mostly neoclassical, found it by accident lol)

i think the reason why they are so popular is because no one really leasons to prog metal, it basically had its chance in the 80s and no one really tried it. dream theater may not be the gods of all prog metal, but they have done the most out of all of them, so, yeah they are close

He has a point. They ARE good; I mean they're still my 2nd favorite metal band (next to PoS) but a lot of DT fans act like DT are the be all and end all of prog metal, which is simply not true. There is a lot more to prog metal than DT, you just have to look for it.

Well acctually theres alot of good progressive bands out there my self dreamtheater is my favorite:P got a dreamtheater tattoo all over my back:D but got sevral other bands i like too like Circus maximus,Opeth,symphony x,Pagans mind shadow gallery so keep looking and you find the band so fit your personal tast of prog exact:)

I didnt said DT sucks or anything similar. They are an awesome band. Ive seen em live like 4 times and they are awesome. The problem is when thier fanboys talk about them thinking that they are the one and only prog band in the galaxy. They think that no prog band can stand beside them. People lets get things straight......that people arent the same after Awake......and since that....there have been hundreds of bands with better music that DT.

I like Dream Theater. They introduced me to prog. They may be overrated, but they are a gateway into the genre.

Great vids. I make progressive videos too so watching yours give me ideas. And there are a lot more bands than Dream Theater but that doesn't mean Dream Theater aren't good
