  • Everybody was tap-dance fighting...

  • ladies ues to be ladies back then no more they do well ....

  • megan who

  • these mofos had some real talent bitd. sing, act, dance and tap not just good looks. these people were calssy as hell too wtf happened? suits to torn jeans...now we got some pussies on twilight acting emo wtf.

  • One of the BBC people said that to his mind, Astaire was the greatest all-around performer in history. And then he added, in the beginning, Adele Astaire was the draw, the person people paid to see, and Fred supported her--so what must she have been like? There's a little bit of audio of Adele Astaire, and that's it. No video.

  • I live Fred and Ginger. They're wonderful.

  • *Clackity clackity clackity SLAP!!!!*

  • Today....

  • They are..... AMAZING!!!!!!!! Its Like a mirror, just amazing, this is Dance and not bull**** that we sadly have alot of playses

  • OH thats looks like su much fun.

  • this is a pure classic. i love her out fit to, it very sexy and sophisticated

  • "Arrow piercing a heart, and dripping blood"? Wow. Not only could he dance like a god, but Fred also sent the most awesome valentines cards ever.

  • Please, somebody, upload full scene of I Won't Dance.

  • One of the few, if not the only time that Fred and Ginger's taps were recorded live. AWESOME!

  • Fred was a genius, his rythm was impeccable.

Ginger was marvelous also, but Fred's musicality makes him special to me.

  • Ginger just falls into his arms never missing a beat! Incredible the two of them were..thank you for posting this. I never get tired of watching and listening to them!

  • I like Fred's little whoop at 3:20

  • Warum bin ich nicht schon früher geboren :/

Egal, den lern ich einfach auch noch :)

  • Ginger Rogers you are a beautiful person ;w;

  • There's something marvelous about the lock of hair falling on her forehead toward the end (only to be fixed after the cut, of course).

  • One of their best routines ever.!

  • Oh my, some of the reactions here: saying she looks like Christina Aguilera! Are you out of your mind?? It's the other way around! Get your math chronologically correct please. ;)

Or saying she'd need 10 repetitions, so she's not a dancer. What?? You think a dancer doesn't need repetitions? 10 is not a lot, for such a routine. It's amazing the best dancer could do that in 10 repetitions. You're so ignorant!

Okay, keep it positive: they were so talented and amazing, the comments won't change that

  • nice...! :)

  • She acted so naturally... I like it.

  • She kinda reminds me of Christina Aguilera in her Back to Basics days... very beautiful (:

  • @mrporkchop1980 tell me about it. Not only cause of this, but a bunch of other stuff

  • It's swing tap! :D

  • @TheHamturn i have no idea what you meant there, but a short joke followed by a exclamation mark then a smilie is something that catches my eye.

  • СУПЕР!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Paracelsus911

Check out MissRepresentation on OWN October 22nd at 10am ET. This starts the movement to end sexism in the media :)

  • Did Fred hit Ginger at 0:58?

  • @cfizzlefresh I never noticed that before, but I guess he did. Whoops.

  • I don't care what the times say, I dress like this! Believe it or not, I get the most head turns when in a room surrounded by half naked women. Men appreciate class. Write me for tips.

  • I watch these guys and wonder how the hell people like Megan Fox are famous today.

  • @wanderlust712 Really I onder how half of these no talent people are..!!!!!!

  • @wanderlust712

That's simple. We now reside in a degenerate culture.

  • Just brilliant.

  • I was born in the wrong time period

  • ginger kinda looks like xtina aguilera..and also msn brought me here cos they said ginger rogers and fred astaire had pretty raunchy moves that you could "get pregnant from"...in comparison to today's porn music videos and lyrics where women do the nasty on stage, in concerts and videos but there arent really any comparisons tbh...this is perhaps more watchable than the garbage out there these days with meaningless soulless lyrics .i love the golden oldies where people actually had soul!

  • Oh, and Ginger dances in pants in "I'm putting all my eggs in one basket" in Follow The Fleet

  • One shot...

    Nuff said.

  • I want that quote changed... Fred did everything ginger did, but he did it forwards without heels.

  • “Remember, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels.” -- Faith Whittlesey

Plus sexist legs of the 40's!

  • Ginger also danced in shorts in Follow the Fleet and jodphur pants in Top Hat

  • It's a very rare thing to see Ginger dancing in pants. I think it was only one other time in The Barkley's Of Broadway. As always they are a wonderful pair together. You will never see this kind of talent ever again.

  • @levimom There was also at least one other time in Follow the Fleet where Ginger danced in pants, during the "Let Yourself Go" dance routine.

  • I loved it. Just amazing. Cannot wait to share this with Mike.

  • She looks kinda awkward. .

  • Ginger's autobiography is called Ginger: My Story

  • they're stunning...this is my fred and ginger dance!

  • NO ONE will ever compare to these two.

  • All I know is that Ginger Rogers was frikkin' HOT!

  • We should all learn how to speak in tap. :)

  • @TheRealJohnMiller It would resolve soooo many arguments.

  • If any Fellini fan here can understand German you should really check out my upcoming book "Nur Mut!" - I worked with him several times as an actress and have many unusal, great stories to tell about working with him. For further details check out my youtubechannel (more videos are coming) or/and my facebookpage. Angelika Hansen.

  • I've never realised that Christina Aguielra looks like Ginger Rogers...

  • Coming from a competitive ballroom dancer who is ranked internationally in the styles that Fred and Ginger did, you can't compare the guy and the girl and say who is better. The guy and girl have two separate roles. They're both good at what they do. Don't compare them to each other.

  • People, please! The joke about Ginger doing everything Fred did but backwards and in heels is just that - a joke. It wasn't backwards to her, she was used to heels, and there's a reason Astaire was the one with all the solo numbers! Ginger was Fred's most famous partner, but not the most skilled. Ask a professional if Ginger was as good as Fred or listen to the DVD commentaries. There is no doubt at all: Ginger was nowhere near as good as Fred!

  • So Christina Aguilera...

  • The old days are talking about the old days... HA!

  • Legends... Truly amazing.

  • Oh dancing..my favorite pasttime

  • I feel like I'm the only person who can never take their eyes off of Ginger! I make an effort to only watch Fred every now and then, but it never works out.

  • @ladyjazzkiller I completely agree :)

  • i think that comparing fred to ginger is comparing apples to oranges. guys and girls have different challenges to face in dance. They are great individually and together as partners. lets just leave it at that.

  • I would not be surprised if Fred got hard to handle dancing with Ginger.

  • It's very beautiful, wonderful! the music, the dance and the dancers of course. Sadly the people today is so ignorance and they don't admire this rutine. It's fantastic!

  • They look delighted with every step as though they had just thought of it there and then. So spontaneous!

  • Amazing dancing

  • Only valentine she ever got? I find that hard to believe.

  • I don't know much about tap dancing, but according to my grandmother, who was a dancer, Fred was a very hard person to partner with. He was more of a soloist than a lead. So way to go Ginger for keeping up!

  • i want what shes wearing.

  • I read somewhere that Ginger would rehearse with Hermes Pan, the choreographer, and it took her about 10 repetitions to get the dance down. When she was ready, she'd rehearse with Fred. Sorry to burst some bubbles, but Ginger was not a dancer and it took her a while to learn all those steps. It's true.

  • @xander7ful That is ridiculous - the proof is in the pudding as we say. It took Churchill ages to learn his speeches, but he was a master of the language.

  • @xander7ful She sure looks like one hell of a dancer to me.

  • Comment removed

  • @xander7ful Who cares how long it took. If Fred Astaire took interest in her that pretty much sums up her ability to me.

  • @xander7ful Ginger was a dancer, even dancers have to learn new dances and rehearse. She danced on Broadway and in numerous other musical numbers in films, including 42nd Street and Stage Door. Saying she is not a dancer is to deny what it going on within this number here.

  • sweet merciful jesus I've never seen so much class 0_o

  • Comment removed

  • It is just me...or she's SEXY???

  • @blackgassbass she's extremely sexy!

  • i bet when women danced with fred astaire they thought they had done died and went to heaven

  • 0:58 headshooot. :D

  • Does the fact that 1:03 to 3:51 is one shot blow anyone elses mind?

  • @Strawberryjam1916 It sure does mine! How do you know that?

  • @Strawberryjam1916 Hey there, I think you'd be amazed at how many dance sequences were all done in one shot back then... a real homage to the talent on display!

  • It occurs to me that Rogers is framed by Astaire - she's the picture, he's the surround that hold the picture in place.

  • If they still had clothes like that I would wear them. I love it.... I always said I should of been born in those days, but then again I wouldn't be here right now lol

  • valiente para ser una homo sexual de los años 20

  • Sorry, how can you possibly thumb down this?

    Are you retarded?

    Fred Astaire = genius.

  • Think of how much rehearsing went into those three minutes of dancing. This whole thing in one take. Amazing.

  • i absolutely love the continuous shot.

  • If only the stores stocked clothes like these spritelybird! I swear some women don´t possess a mirror in their homes so they can´t see that some fashions don´t suit.

I grew up watching Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing and never get tired of watching them

  • OHHH DIOS MÍO QUE TALENTOOOOOOOO

  • I love them

  • The best dancecouple EVER

  • Ginger was the perfect partner for Fred. She matched him step for step, and she did it backwards. The world misses these two.

  • Dei beiden sind einfach phenomenal! Love them!

  • I really want to pay attention to what Ginger is doing, but, Fred just wouldnt let me.. HE IS AMAIZING

  • @brendavitulli I agree. that always happens to me. I try to watch ginger and matter of fact all of fred"s partners but I end up fixed on him.

  • oh my! I love Gingers' outfit!! Don't think you could ever find something like that nowadays, and she is so pretty =)

  • Their musicality is just astounding.

  • If the black legend around these two that said they couldn't really stand each other is true, they must have been the best actors ever, cause I've never seen anyone have more fun on screen.

  • Smack!!!!

  • Did you notice at the 1:52 to 1:56 interval Ginger misses her tap but Fred just laughs it off and they continue? They were obviously just having a lot of fun in this (unusually long) number.

  • I am no dancer, but when you watch, you want to dance! Love their movies. It is simply the best of American enterainment....

  • Where can I buy her outfit? Ha. And like someone just mentioned, its astonishing that this is ONE CAMERA SHOT. No editing, just pure acting and dancing ability, with tons of stamina to boot. I admit it's the first I've ever seen these two (I'm 21, with no dance history to acclaim, a biochem major though :D ), but nonetheless the endurance of these videos doesn't surprise me, what marvelous dancing!

  • I would kill for Ginger's whole look!!

  • got i wish people did that kind of stuff today!!!

  • I would like to dance like them !!!!

    Wonderful !!!!!!

  • this makes me want to learn how to tap dance :D

  • OK we can disagree about Ginger, bit I certainly agree about Michael Jackson, who was a great, think I read that Michael said he learned so much about dancing by watching Fred Astaire movies. Even if he did n´t say it , am sure he did learn a lot.

  • once the dancing starts, it's one camera shot. from start to finish. no editing, no different takes. one shot, one dance. true perfection. astaire and rogers, we love you.

  • I just can't imagine how these fun moments were all rehearsed *_*

  • I absolutely love the tap fight and how she slaps him lol :D man where did the good times go in Hollywood? all we have now is justin bieber :P

  • TAP FIGHT

  • I would have loved to be an extra in these movies. You get to dress well, probably smoke a few cigarettes and watch fantastic amazingness.

  • bozpity: I agree with you!

  • Charming and real class. Something Hollywood has completely lost today!

  • Fred was so suave. You just know he got laid by every dance partner he had. ;)

  • @deankeith1008 In truth, Fred Astaire was very happily married from 1933 to 1954 to Phyllis Potter. He was a man of considerable charm, but no rake. He was close friends with Clark Gable, Errol Flynn and Bob Hope but unlike them, Astaire was not a womanizer nor a rake. But he certainly could have been! He was simply content with his wife of 21 years. Like Jimmy Stewart was content with his wife of 45 years. It does happen to some folks.

  • Robert Mitchum was married for over 40 years.Quite a surprise.

  • @BeadStallcup I love watching Fred dance. He was amazing and I know he was devoted to his wife. It's a rarity in Hollywood and I give him props for being able to be in love with the same woman all his life.

  • INEGUAGLIABILI !

  • Really... How can 15 people actually dislike this? Damn nuts...

  • Stunning!

  • A statement on how impressive it is that such an old video has us wondering how it was done with our fancy CGI stuff now lol

  • Still want to figure out how he did the magic cane thing! Looks pretty amazing how it all blends.

  • @shaolin95

A very neat and seamless bit of film editing for the magic cane effect, at least that's what I read somewhere (can't remember what exactly they did with the film to achieve that trick).

  • @shaolin95 What magic cane thing?

  • @CoffeeAddictLaura from Blues skies...I haha Just realised I thought You meant in this video x

  • @CoffeeAddictLaura From the Puttin on the Ritz video :-)

  • I will take a look at that one but my advantage is, I dont have nostalgia which can affect judgment ...with all due respect, since this is way beyond my time. I do like to explore things that happened before I was born to separate old from classic. For example when I watched Puttin on the Ritz I was blown away...have been watching that video over and over way too many times. :-)

  • @shaolin95

It's also way beyond my time too - I'm not writing out of nostalgia, just out of a love for old movies I've had since I was in college several years ago. And after watching Swing Time and Top Hat for instance, Fred and Ginger have become favorites of mine dancing together. As for the The Puttin on the Ritz routine - I haven't seen the movie that's in, but I agree it's such a brilliant and fun video.

  • I am sorry but I have yet to see a anyone dancing with Fred that does not look just plain bad compared to him. She just looks too stiff and without that grace that Astaire has. Perhaps he is just THAT good but when there is a female dancing and my eyes are stuck watching the guy dance...something must be wrong! :-)

  • @shaolin95

One of my favorite Fred and Ginger routines is from Swing Time, when they're doing the little leaps over a barrier at the end. I don't know how anyone looking at that one for instance can say that, even compared to him, she can't do complicated footwork, and doesn't have tremendous grace or gift with dancing (especially from :45 onwards in that video), along with the acting while dancing.

  • @shaolin95 Do not agree , I think Ginger was as good as Fred, after all she was usually wearing high heels, a long dress, that would probably have made it more difficult for Fred if he had to wear the same.. She was good actress too.

Ginger was Fred´s best partner by a long way, I would say they were perfection. The nearest I have seen to them were Torville and Dean at their peak.

  • @135yearswaiting I guess we must disagree then. As a dancer she is not even on the same league but then again...how is aside from Michael Jackson and a select few :-)

  • @135yearswaiting Yes! Ginger could do everything Fred did, backwards and in heels.

  • @135yearswaiting I do believe her autobiography was called something like backwards in high heels! Personally I'd take Cyd Charisse as she was mesmerising

  • @135yearswaiting Ginger Rogers was best on-screen partner for Fred. The had the best chemistry. But Fred's tap dancing equal was Eleanor Powell.

Also, take note of how this very long dance sequence had no edits. Fred Astaire insisted his dance routines be shot with one camera from start to finish and no edits. Who could do that today?

  • @135yearswaiting

Torville and Dean???? Ice skaters who were great On The Ice. As good as they were,

they still were a bit overrated. Still, it was nice to see someone besides the Russians

get inflated scores all the time.

  • My face aches from smiling! What a pair!

  • Man-they could freaking MOVE!!!

  • The 1911 version of this has no differences! :o

  • The really really amazing thing is how fun they make it look, and how much it looks like they are just improvising and having a good time ... when actually every single movement is rehearsed. That is great acting while dancing!

  • Thier both just so light on thier feet it's breathtaking, i mean how could anyone not enjoy this, it's truly dancing at it's best.

  • I wish women would dress like this now. They are clueless when it comes to ELEGANCE. The notion that just because something is "in" it doesn't mean they should necessarily wear it. These women wore their clothes, the clothes didn't wear them.

  • @spritelybird

I agree wityh everything you said! Just because something is in doesn't mean have to wear it! But everyone follows the same trend and it's so annoying. And what they wear now is practically nothing.

  • @spritelybird

Are you saying that women know nothing about elegance? I'm only 16 and know of many woman who dress elegantly.

I do love Ginger's outfit. If I ever found it, I'd definitely wear it. :)

  • @BoxOfChocolates94 There are some, but most women have no idea what true style is. it's what looks good ON YOU, how to put an outfit together. It has nothing to do with money. Yes, there are elegant women out there but IMO they go against type and ignore the social engineering in the media to look a certain way. Most girls "role models" are train wrecks, wearing very expensive garbage that makes them look trashy. I esp hate the platform stripper shoes. Rachel Bilson is young one with style.

  • @spritelybird You're certainly right about Ginger Rogers. Her apparel brings out her natural beauty and womanhood. Very, very attractive, and not a inch of "skin" showing. Today's actresses are utterly misguided by false values. With very few exceptions today, they are completely obsessed with their sexuality and the power to intimidate with it. It's a false measure of womanly charm and character. Women in Hollywood today display their body parts to hide their terrible insecurity.

  • @BeadStallcup I think women had more power then than now because they were very talented and unique. Now fame is come by so cheaply, instead of with hard work that these people were accustomed to in the 20's and 30's. The women now have nothing but sexuality, they have no longevity and their exploitation is sickening to me, how for example Britney Spears has been treated. If they knew their worth they'd have more to bargain with. Ginger Rogers was no one's fool. She was a strong sensible woman.

  • @spritelybird I am a woman, and I agree with you. However, I think that's quite applicable to men too. Today there are very few men capable of wearing a suit (not to mention a tux) the way Astaire did it. There's a difference between being a businessman and being a gentleman.

  • @spritelybird well i truely wish they sold clothes like this (im 17 years old by the way)

  • @Crystalientje Well, you can take the long way and learn how to sew. You can learn at Joann's and at some point make your own clothes, that's the joy of sewing when you have the skill down, it's whatever you desire. In the fabric and trims you like, not what is offered to you. I am twice your age and I am learning to sew and it's hard but fun. I suggest checking out JoAnn's and Etsy and see what amazingly creative people are out there. You are young, you could make a career of it!

  • @spritelybird thanks i would've tried sewing along time ago, but where i am there is no possibilities of sewing nor sewing classes ;P or else my closet would have been full with these sorts of clothings :D

  • @Crystalientje Where are you from? You can take a correspondence course too! All you need is a decent sewing machine. I took sewing and dressmaking from Stratford Institute. You probably won't get a job except alterations but you will learn to make clothes. Also! Try Etsy and look under clothes. there's a lot there to love you won't find in a store and it's cheaper and unique.

  • @spritelybird you're so right, sometimes I feel like I was born the wrong age, honestly!Today it's too much about being superficial, with bad taste!

  • @spritelybird Unfortunatly fellas who hold that veiwpoint tend to be both in the minority these days and not in any position of power over fashion. So I wouldn't hold ya breath mate.

  • @spritelybird You have no idea actually how many girls my age would love for this era to make a comeback.

  • @iloveoreos15 and how old are you ???

  • @iloveoreos15 Well, miss, how old are girls your age?? Some men my age would love to live back then too. Men my age are almost 40, but inside every older person is a younger person wondering what the hell happened! :P

"I can't imagine what's got into Madge recently. She's never hit me before." - Horton

"Maybe she just never thought of it before." - Astaire

  • @iloveoreos15 and i'm one of them!!! :D

  • @iloveoreos15 Definitely. Except, minus the lack of rights for women.

  • Comment removed

  • @Sibly73 Women do not totally have rights these days either. Entertainment and the media cater and encourage perverted males (a small but powerful group) and women are forced to endure harassment and emotional rape on a daily basis. Please choose to boycott certain films, magazines, etc. when possible. I do see another world in our near future :)

  • @dkawec123 Yes I totally agree with you. The lack of equal employment opportunities and degredation of women is clear in today's society, however, I meant that I would like to return to a time like that without its oppressive qualities.

  • @spritelybird

elegance is not the trend now. currenty the trend is looking like a slut

  • @spritelybird I wish men would dress elegant too! It is no turn on seeing them in pajamas and flip flops.
