  • how can u dislike this!!!!????? its like a friendly informational Mr. Smith from Matrix lol

  • im am now confused

  • Wonderful...the 4th dimension is perhaps where God/Angles/Spirits/Ghost are.....

  • @year2044

:D ...No, the fourth dimension is time ;)

  • I about to bake rap scratch Like CARL SAGAN

  • He talks like Agent Smith from the Matrix.

  • what else is there to do???

    roll a flat blunt,

    watch our flat screen,

    watch some flatball,

play our XFlatbox periphery, up to 180 degrees,

discuss nothing with our flat-chested wife,

crawl onto to our contour matress? wait what

    and go flatline into sleep.

  • Mind destroyed... wheres my bong.

  • I want him to say "Mister Andersonnnnnn'uh"

  • THAT INTENCE COMMERCIAL ROCKED!!

  • -Get really baked

    -Watch Carl Sagan

    -Profit?

  • part 2?

  • my mind has been blown in billions and billions

  • "Im not very good at singing, but here, heres a try. Woooop Uuuaaaooh"

  • Comment removed

  • Yes! i have been trying to tell people this for ages now i can show them a fucking scientist says the same thing! HAIL SAGAN!

  • i could watch this all day

  • i feel dumber now that ive watched this

  • @MajorBiscuits no you've all ways just been stupid

  • @kumili727 ..... "all ways" .... ?

  • @Errathetube in 1979

  • Saw this series when i was 11, changed my life..for more on the fourth read edwin abbotts flatland

  • The most amusing part of Cosmos in my opinion. Hard to imagine that he's dead.

  • "Mister Anderssonnnnnn"

  • @pinkrabbithappiness we matrix now

  • @pinkrabbithappiness oh my god for 5 years i have never noticed that

  • At least he knows the truth now. A lot more than I know. Struggling with the higher power, and if ANYONE can tell me the truth on the afterlife, please let me know. Does anyone REALLY know...no past relatives and friends have contacted me since. Search your soul. I'll only know on the day. Dreading it...but there you go!

  • @damiankerr I think we can know. We know that the components in the brain that makes us sense, feel and think can be damaged, or even removed, by accidents or deteriorate with age. I think it's safe to say we're 100% physical since everything about us can be changed by altering the brain. When we die all the differents centers of the brain shuts down and we are no more.

I know it can be hard to accept but once you do you'll have a greater appreciation of the life that you have :)

  • @phpeni

    Nice post! Thanks.

  • @damiankerr

A little bit of every religeon makes sense and correlates with the big picture, it's different interpretations of different events at different times. It's all about interpreting things for yourself, if someone just tells you that there's an alien lord named Xulu is coming down here on 2012 to fuck shit up are you gonna believe them right away? I sure fucking hope not Tom Cruise.

  • @peaveylove

Ha, ha! I'm certainly no Tom Cruise!! But nice post. Most relgrions have a similar core belief. Different Gods etc., but the same idea. And yes there's something to be taken from each one. I'm trying to put the pieces together. It was easier when I was just a blind believer. Yes I've got to sort it out for yourself. But for now, back to the footie on the internet!

  • if they have no height whatsoever, how can they even perceive each other?

  • "And they will pat him on his side...", lmao.

  • My brain just exploded a tiny bit.

  • :( I wish I could be in 4th dimension

  • I'd like him to say Mr. Anderson.....

  • @Ready2BeAwakened mister aajndersoon

  • If only all scientists explained with such clarity.

  • When was this recorded?

  • Carl u so silly - does not motion imply time and therefore another dimension? how could a 2 dimensional flatlander or a three dimensional cube "move" without time and thus a higher dimension?

  • @QuotidianHegemony Time is implied by the forward arrow... things decay because of entropy. It is that second law of thermodynamics that gives us a sense of time. Time is indeed often seen as a dimension. But the demonstration by Sagan was to give a feeling of multi-dimensional space... Sagan was not trying to explain time.... this would of confused the simplicity of the explanation.

  • Best hair.

  • I always thought that the 4th dimension was time. I have never given it much thought, it just came to me intrinsically. But now I see there actually can be a number of geometrical dimensions further than our 3.

  • @thedarkone123123 there has been a great debate lately as to whether time actually exists or not. Some Brit seems to have solved some quantum equation which gives out t=0... Personally I don't believe that is non-existened, but if you are interested I could possibly find and link your some videos regarding that. :-)

  • Are these 12 minute ads anonymous?

  • if you can explain 2 dimension in a 3 dimension view, than how to explain 1 dimension in a 2 dimension view?

  • @karumentic a stick.

  • @karumentic a flat square crossing the 1 dimensional line, with only part of it appearing at a time... similar to the apple crossing the flat land

  • @gogators432 so it would just appear as a line(would change shape)in the 1D world?

    I see,thank you! =)

  • @karumentic interesting... isn't it

  • @beenn15 it seriously is @@

  • I wonder when one first percieves the 4th dimension one could always remember what direction it was so you could point to it in a 3d world. It must be 90º angle away from Length Width and Height so let's call it Tiyth so it has a logically defined name. it operates in four directions so you can move on it's diagonal(the direction which is the longest straight line in a geometric figure.) A²+B²=C² 2d A³+B³+C³=D³ 3d A^4+B^4+C^4+D^4=E^4 4d 1d is A¹=B¹. If I'm wrong reply.

  • I thought I was smart but I really have no idea what's he is saying

  • @Rockferry19 you're retarded

  • He's MR. SMITH!

  • Goodbye..... Mr Anderson

  • Is there such a thing as absolute flatness? Planck-level perhaps?

  • @ilikemyfitteds In two dimensions, there is nothing but absolute flatness. Kind of hard to imagine because we ourselves live in three dimensions.

  • @ilikemyfitteds You know how black holes take up no space at all? It's like that, but also moves in 2 directions. You can only see it from 1 angle.

  • Wow, he is so smart.

  • 46 people exist in zero dimensions.

  • Holy Shit, THIS IS JOE ROGAN FART THEORY!

  • smoke weed everyday

  • Smartypants.

  • I think ive gone BONKERS

I have a hypercube in my closet,

    but you can't see it

  • I feel sorry for the squares...

  • which episode of cosmos is this from?

or is it not from the series cosmos at all?

  • @Robomandude it's from cosmos but i don't remember the episode, sorry

  • @Robomandude

    cosmos: episode 10

  • I

    like

    the

    way

    he

    talks

  • @leahcimrac It's so idiots and/or non-English people can more easily understand him.

  • It's simple... ask a 4D apple to kick us in the butt so we get into 4D :))

  • "Flat business"

    Kills me

  • i swear he sounds just like smith from the matrix.

  • Strange how he manages to give that red little sqaure a personality..

  • Haha "they will... pat him on his side."

  • 46 people have "gone bonkers."

  • wow he sounds almost exactly like mr.smith (hugo weaving) from the matrix!!

  • 0:23 dear sagan, i'm from argentine and no, you cannot live in falkland! i dont like this video!

  • @revisionhistorica did you know carl sagan died in 96 at age 62.

  • @am7b51 i know he actually lives in "flatland" since then

  • @revisionhistorica haha what a place! next thing is that flatland is he's own heaven LOL.

  • Thank you Carl for not saying "heightTH"!!

  • @Acolyteofchaos carl sagan rests in peace since 1996. it is sad.

  • i don't understand brain steaming!

  • @havabighed well, yes time is a dimension, but a temporal one, which traditionally isnt viewed as spatial.

  • @havabighed no, it wouldnt. the dimension youre in is described as the minimum number of coordinates youd need to locate an area on it. in this case, 2. so it would be greetings from the 3rd dimesion. sagan aint wrong. sagan aint never wrong.

  • I think Carl Sagan is agent Smith from the Matrix!

    Fantastic explanation!

  • the harder i try to understand the more impossible it becomes to understand

  • Actually... it would be "hello, I am a visitor from the 4th dimension" cause..... the 3rd dimension for the flatlander would be time.

good try mr. sagan... good try.

  • Mr. Anderson...

  • Wow, this guy isn't very smart, is he? Clearly he hasn't read a little something I like to call the bible. These guys seriously need to grow up.

  • @JeSuSR0cksaLl Not sure if trolling or just another idiot theist

  • @Tackelot obviously trolling, lol.

  • @Tackelot You're dumb, it's spelled, "theory" and obviously you don't know much or you wouldn't be risking hellfire by calling the TRUTH that. This isn't gods science, it's fairy tale nonsense that only those starving for attention pretend to believe in. Of course you call anyone who calls you out to accept responsibility names like, "troll". You have some growing up to do and some big time soul searching if you don't want to be eternally damned.

  • @JeSuSR0cksaLl Go troll Dawkins videos, Carl Sagan videos are off limits. Flagged and reported.

  • Mr. Anderson

  • ok so if you have fourth dimension, then you may lost some energy in that dimension if you have some source which scatter in all direction....

  • How can something be absolutely flat? Still something flat must have height or it would cease to exist?

  • @mQtek He's talking hypothetically about a world that only has 2 dimensions, length and width - and without height. So, like a flat piece of paper, or a laptop screen, in this hypothetical 2-dimension world, everything is absolutely flat. So they would exist, they just wouldn't any solid form - like the words on a paper (visible, exists, but completely flat) versus a cellphone (visible, exists, but you can hold it, lift it, move it - because it has form).

  • dude wat

  • pervy apple

  • I love this dude, and so does his attire. It follows him everywhere he goes.

  • Has any-one have a clue what it would look like in flatland if the creatures were to have eyes, since everything is flat, no hieght whatso-ever how would they distugensh movement if the could not see any land?....Some-one please answer

  • @bezoo69 lol made me laugh too!

  • The only thing more awesome than Sagan talking 4th dimension, is that a YTber named SuckDeezNutsBitch watched it and commented.

  • I can't even begin to imagine a 4th dimension...

  • Flatland only has one layer of atoms.

  • If Flatland has no height, and the apple has to pass through, wouldn't infinite slices of the apple be shown to the square??

  • @tacoyum6 No, only what was shown as 2-D plus time. It would be constant, but not infinite perhaps? Supposedly, time still relates. If time wasn't a factor, it would be infinite, otherwise, it's a freak event that would almost go unnoticed. Which makes me think, that if a 4-D creature interacted with us, we may never see it, or hear it, because our plane of existence is out of touch from theirs.

  • its almost like a kid's storybook "Apple in Flatland"

  • Carl Sagan was truly a man ahead of his time

  • If Carl Sagan was born in another age, he would be known as a messenger of heavens. But this is 21st century. Now he's just an interesting geek.

  • That looks too small to be a house. I think the square lives in...

    [puts on sunglasses]

    ... a flat.

  • @ph3r0x they live!!!!

  • @ph3r0x YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • @ph3r0x fucking end of comments. lol.

  • @ph3r0x YYYEEEEAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ph3r0x YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

  • Carl Sagan saying "Cube" is one of the most awesome things I've ever heard! It's right up there with Rowan Atkinson saying "Bob" in Blackadder.

Pronunciation separates ordinary men and epic legends!

  • lol imagine if the square fell upside down

  • the more he explains the more he tells about God. We are the flatland people, the apple would be God. huahuahuahauhauhaha

  • @zkk17 2D square met God, and he cannot explain where it is to his atheits friends, point where is your 3D? Where is your 3D now? hahaha, 3D is not real. EXPLAIN THAT. You lied, 3D is not real if you can't prove. hahahha, Carl Sagan you dumb ass.

  • @zkk17 That does absolutely nothing to prove that God exists...

  • @zkk17 Even if that did prove god exists, which it doesn't, why would that make Carl Sagan a dumbass? He never tried to prove god didn't exist, at least not intentionally.

  • @zkk17 Prove it.

  • @Nanofuture87 the square will never be able to prove that the apple is real. he has 2d it's impossible he prove that the apple is real. same happen to me.

  • @zkk17 Actually the square could at least prove that the third dimension is real with math, just like we can prove that the 4th dimension and beyond exist. I don't need you to show me the apple, but you do have to show a reasoned way that you can come to the conclusion that apples exist. You can't start with a conclusion and then flimsily try to justify it; that isn't how science works.

  • @Nanofuture87 He could explain with math, because he learned math and how it works and it can fit in a paper and numbers, God cannot be explained by math because it is not made by numbers, it is not composed of things present in our univrse so we can put him in a formula. Science will never be able to explain or prove because for science it must fit in a formula so then it is proven. We will discuss forever and will get to no where. wish you have a nice day.

  • @zkk17 So in short, no, you don't have a rational reason for believing in God. Have a nice day.

  • @Nanofuture87 Why everything must be always rational? Your mind is so closed for the rational things that you can't see anything else. It's impossible.

  • @zkk17 If it isn't rational, then it must be irrational. Irrational (adj): without or deprived of normal mental clarity or sound judgment. Sorry if I need, you know, reasons for believing things.

  • He is just proving that God exists. If we were in flatland people, we would not be able to see things that belongs to 3D world. God is made of no dimesion, so that is why we cannot see him, but that does not mean that he is not out there. People from flatland will say, there is no 3D, 2D is everything. But 3D is real, flatland people can't prove it.

  • @ycantweallgetabong its a lack of light i guess

  • @karl198 a shadow isnt an object, it has no mass

  • @rampager049 I agree with your reasoning, but if a shadow is not an object, what is it?

  • @YcantWeAllGetAbong it's an absence of light

  • @BirdPhobia a 2 dimensional object would be less than Planck Length.

  • lol imagine if the square fell upside down

  • Carl Sagan manages to sound both informative, and at the same time entirely friendly. That's so rare.

  • @promisedeyes

Intelligence and kindness rarely co-exist due to the overwhelming urge for intellectuals to insult those less fortunate than them.

And oops, there I go doing that very thing. I'm sorry. Gotta exercise that friendliness

  • "which oddly enough looks like an apple" lol

  • Just when I think I'm getting an understanding of our world, Carl Sagan has to come take it away from me.. In a good way :)

  • I could listen to Carl Sagan talk all day. He's both fascinating to listen to and relaxing.

  • Good god, I love Carl Sagan.

  • a 2d object "scurrying about" would be ontop of something so that means there would be heinght right?

  • I can't believe i'm forced to watch a hairspray advert before I can listen to the genius that is Carl Sagan.

  • ummm so 2D has no height only left, right, backwards and front right? so....what does 1D have? o.0

  • @xmax669 1D Is literally linear, go one way, or go the other way.

  • Could a 2 dimensional object be considered an object at all? Were it to have no depth that would imply it doesn't really have mass so by our understanding of the physical universe a 2 dimensional object can only exist as an image.

  • Only listen, it is as if agent Smith is talking about the 4th dimension.

  • Someone please answer this! I was thinking up crazy stuff the other day, and thought up some theory. If it already exists, let me know what it is called. Here it is. You know the old philosophy question, "If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" Well what I thought up was, "Does an object or place cease to exist until one acknowledge it?" Meaning does an object only exist when our senses acknowledge it.

  • @SuckDeezNutzBitch Thats a fun Idea and I like how you approached it, but yes that Idea has been thought up before, in fact it's a basic construct of quantum theory, the idea is as you said it, if you don't see and object you can't know for sure it has mass or is real, this is usually adapted to particle physics in that some particles act as if they don't exist or are being acted upon by something that you cant see, you can't be sure matter even exists in the first place.

  • @SuckDeezNutzBitch Yeah. That's Einstein's physics. Apparently we can be in two places at once.

  • he acts like he's 50 million times better than everyone else....

  • But, if we live in flat land, how can we see each other?

  • @Schonke we live in '3D land' ... The 4th Dimension to us is what our 3D land is to Flatland... so a 4th dimensional creature can seem to us to be talking to us from nowhere, like the apple talking to flat land. so it goes 2D (flat land) 3D (you and me) 4D (a dimension at right angles to all other axis at the same time that we can't see because we can only see in 3D)

  • Poor Apple :(

  • I used to be 4-dimensional, but then I got an arrow to the knee.

  • @Quesadilla117 :( I used to be 2-dimensional, but this strange floating 3-dimensional object called a 'dragon' sent me spinning into the air (critical hit and all). Now I can watch YouTube, which is way more interesting than YouCircularCrossSection.

  • @Quesadilla117 THESE COMMENTS ARENT FUCKING FUNNY.

THEY'RE WORSE THAN "THE CAKE IS A LIE"

  • Numbers******* (dimensions).

  • Holy shit I'm baked right now and I can see the 4th dimension and it actually makes 109% perfect sense. The 4 dimension is what would be called out of body. Out of body because when you would time travel one body of yours would be the time traveler, and then the other body of yours will be your sub conscious taking over on your earth body and it would carry on the same exact tasks if let's say you never time traveled to begin with. And since it's YOU, that's why the measurements are the same nu

  • @SignMePlease1 Oh man, the first sentence of your comment made me laugh SO FUCKING HARD. Thanks for that, man.

  • Why can't there be preachers who talk about this shit in church? I'd go every Sunday, 3rd pew.

  • @SuburbanoidMisfit111 Not religion, but science sermons. That is a brilliant idea!

  • That apple is a jerk.

  • a 2D object can never exist in our 3D world as no matter how small, it will always have a height

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx

    Paper Mario.

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx Yes you are correct 1D,2D,3D and 4D objects will always exist in our universe but some physicists believe that their are even more than ten dimensions. We just haven't discovered them yet or created the idea of them.

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx wow so smart

  • That's true, but we can encounter 2-D images: shadows. They have zero depth/height

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx perhaps if the Planck length is determined to be the true "minimum" length, a two-dimensional object would be defined as having only a single Planck length of height :D

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx shadow?

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx shadows

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx Yup. Without one of the 3, you cease to be!

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx And as such, no 3D object would be able to exist in any form on a flatland because it would also have a height. Not to mention that it would be impossible for a flatlander to identify each other by anything other than side length.

And even then, what makes someone think that there is a 4th dimension? What extra direction would it be in that currently doesn't exist on this 'plane'?

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx

A shadow has no height >.>

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx He never said they did.

  • @xXVXPLiCiTVXx but projection of light... does that count? like at the movies with a projector
