I'm surprised to see the late great Buddy Miles here on bass. I always thought he was about the drums, dating back to the Band of Gypsys. But seeing him get funky on bass makes him even cooler.
Oh man, I had some great "trips" to this music. This is when it was about the MUSIC. Today, it is about just exactly how badly you can out-whore your counterparts. These fools today wouldn't know real music/talent if it hit them between the eyes. @drmorb I have heard of a mixer. Theres one next to me, in my studio. I am a producer, and a live sound guy. I think I know the difference. :):):):):)
Jimi Hendrix had played with only two drummers: Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles. Buddy Miles is a great part of Music...(even if I don't like that much the way he played drums). Didn't know he died.
You might think I am crazy but, take a good look at the bass player and listen to his voice. That is the late great singer/drummer Buddy Miles (Them Changes- remember that jam?) playing a left handed bass. Larry Graham by this time was already soo with Graham Central Station.
woodstock show was better, but man even almost 20 years after they sound almost the same, just a question is larry graham here? i can't tell or see him
Larry Graham was long gone. I think he left the group in the early 70's.
Damn that boy can play the slap bass like nobody's business. Actually, it was no one's business at the time, he pretty much started the style. Great singer too. Like his bass guitar, his voice was equally as low.

can someone please tell me what boom lacka lacka boom lacka lacka means please? I work in the Whitehouse and George Bush says these are terrorist words and they must all be exterminated.
Get down - get funky! I saw SLY and the Family Stone last night at Anaheim House of Blues. I think the cheese done fall off the mans cracker but he's still the King of Funk!
They did reunite, in a sense... I saw Sly and the Family Stone at BB King Blues Club on 11/20/07. It was great, sad, and disappointing at the same time. Sly was erratic to say the least, but when he sang, "If You Want Me to Stay", it was worth the large price of admission. I don't know how many gigs they're doing. Google their website
1971 Larry Graham and Sly were no longer on friendly terms, and Graham was fired in early 1972 and replaced with Rusty Allen. The band's later releases, Fresh (1973) and Small Talk (1974), featured even less of the band and more of Sly. The band's shaky reputation for not showing up at concerts caused promoters to avoid booking them, and after a disastrous engagement at the Radio City Music Hall in January 1975, The Family Stone broke apart completely.
I remember when I bought my first car in 1973 & one of the first twenty or so 8 track tapes I bought were Sly & The Family Stones Greatest Hits. Classic & I have the same one on my CD collection.
i wish Sly would reunite the original Family Stone before it's too late. music fans were already deprived of a Beatles reunion. if Sly doesn't and he probably WON'T it would be a shame. they revolutionised music in the 60's and early 70's.
sometimes artists forget that their time to perform and create is limited. you never know when someone will fall ill, be in an accident, or worse. Life is short.
Thats The FUNKMASTER Sir Sly! ha! War, Earth Wind & Fire comes to mind... Funky jazz rock fusion bands Tower of Power Avg White Band Blood Sweat and Tears Chicago off the top of my head. Great Stuff! coz of money etc.. dummy down the huge band lineups bad decision by record execs. in my opinion.
I remember seeing Sly & The Family in concert in Chicago, and this number is outstanding in my mind. A thick cloud of marijuana smoke hung in the air so thick you could get high just breathing. Great memories. Boom shakalaka wanna take you higher
However, it's not about what the performing artists wears, but more the message in music and the manner with which they deliver it. It's nice to enjoy familiar sounds of yester-year that allow for some to remember.
yall gotta remember that Sylvester Stewart AKA "Sly Stone" and the family came on the scene in 1967. Sly combined a blend of genres like rock, psychedelia, some gospel and RnB. As for their stage outfits, they sure didn't take no leaf outta Prince's book. More he took a leaf out of Heatwave's book with regard to some of the regalia that he wore...(cont'd)
I dont think they were trying to rip off prince, it was just a fashion in performers clothes at the time, like michael jacksons clothes, sometimes very simmilar to prince.
sly and the family can stand on their own merits anyday but it sure looks like they were trying to jump on Princes bandwagon at the time the way they were dressed
uhhh, ummmm, it was the sixties and Prince was thinking about getting out of diapers and into some sequined knickers. I uh, doubt that Sly could see that far into the future
60'S WHERE'S THAT GUYS HEAD?? I was in WICHITA,KAN.Being interviewed for a job "on the air"at one of the ROCKERS there. Two things happened (it was 1970)there,,I'll never forget.SLY STONE DIDN'T SHOW UP FOR A CONCERT THE STATION WAS HAVING "AND" I saw a "240 Z" for the FIRST TIME "turning" on a display in a DATSUN dealers showroom window.I know you needed that INFORMATION. HARD PART OF ALL "SLY'S" GREAT STUFF IS THAT MICHAEL JACKSON OWNS ALL HIS SONGS NOW.
did a minitour with them on the same ticket in 71 They were struggling to make all the dates booked with Sylvester in really bad shape and getting worse. Quaaludes and Peruvian marching powder. The pocket was always full, even when not at their best, they could light 'em up every time.
I couldn't get the video to load so I'm unsure of the date of this show, but I know they crashed for good 1n'75. Maybe they did some comeback work later that that.
Yeah that is none other than the great Buddy Miles with them. A lot of people don't know but Buddy plays other instruments besides drums, and he's leftY. handed. Buddy has been lead singer in
First of all, the clothes are ugly, Sly looks like Michael Jackson from Thriller, and it looks like he has a runny nose. But overall it was good and I still love Sly very much. By the way, that is Buddy Miles. Interesting...

wygakyl, it wasn't all that expensive to get in. $135 or $190 or so? $300? I'd have paid that much happily, and not complained either.

The only other original members that played on 11/20/07 was Cynthia Robinson, and Jerry Martini.

More he took a leaf out of Heatwave's book with regard to some of the regalia that he wore...(cont'd)
wilmitw 4 years ago
I love their outfits! The cloths add to their funky performances! Wouldn't it be great to dress with this kind of flair in every day life? :o}

if nething sly revolutionized this "groovy" style mayne tha first wit da big stunnas they always wore and all dat man
jaketabe55 4 years ago
I dont think they were trying to rip off prince, it was just a fashion in performers clothes at the time, like michael jacksons clothes, sometimes very simmilar to prince.
KalypticBass 4 years ago
sly and the family can stand on their own merits anyday but it sure looks like they were trying to jump on Princes bandwagon at the time the way they were dressed
jasonleverett 4 years ago
uhhh, ummmm, it was the sixties and Prince was thinking about getting out of diapers and into some sequined knickers. I uh, doubt that Sly could see that far into the future

you might try looking at this video title and see the year 1984 in parentheses at the end einstein

THEORIGINALMOJOMAN 3 years ago
did a minitour with them on the same ticket in 71 They were struggling to make all the dates booked with Sylvester in really bad shape and getting worse. Quaaludes and Peruvian marching powder. The pocket was always full, even when not at their best, they could light 'em up every time.
I couldn't get the video to load so I'm unsure of the date of this show, but I know they crashed for good 1n'75. Maybe they did some comeback work later that that.

First of all, the clothes are ugly, Sly looks like Michael Jackson from Thriller, and it looks like he has a runny nose. But overall it was good and I still love Sly very much. By the way, that is Buddy Miles. Interesting...
