When King describes Hilter why do I hear Darth Vader saying "you don't know the power of the dark side." If the Devil was without charm how could you ever be tempted?
Why did MacKenzie-King, say he feared "Canada would become a divided Dominion"?
And why did Canada enter the War right from the start, before Germany made any attack on Canada itself? I mean, Canada didn't play the waiting game or have to be attacked before deciding to join, like the USA.
@DonegalRaymie201 1) Half Of The Country Would Cry For War & The Other Half Would Not Want To Have Anything To Do With Wars In Europe. Most Of The Men Were Still Around From WW1 & The Stories They Had All Came Down To A Waste Of Life.
2) The British King/Queen Are Essentially Still In Charge Of Canada (even today). WW1 Never Really Ended, It Just Went On Pause For 20 Years. Britain & Her Allies Needed Help So We Went Back To Fight Germany To Finish The Job. It Was More Of An Honour Thing.
@MapleBalls "The British King/Queen Are Essentially Still In Charge Of Canada (even today)." Uh... this isn't even remotely true. The King/Queen has absolutely no legislative, judicial or executive authority in Canada. She is the head of state by assent of the Parliament. Canada can reject the monarchy and become a republic at any time. Even in WW II the British Parliament could make no laws regarding a Commonwealth country without its request and assent.
@Everstruggling The Queen Can Stop Or Start Parliament, She Can Vito Laws, All Canadian Soldiers (air navy & army) & New Immigrants Pledge Allegiance To Her. That Pretty Much Makes Her "Essentially In Charge" But More Of A Historically We Let Her. Canada Will Never Break Away From The Commonwealth. Yes We Are A Democracy, But That Pretty Lady Is Still @ The Top Regardless Of How You Look @ It.
That sounds like more power than She actually holds in the UK! Since the time of Cromwell, the Monarch has been banned from entering the UK Parliament, (the House of Commons). Might be wrong, but I imagine what Power she does hold in Canada is largely ceremonial/ historical, powers that Canadian governments have never bothered to repeal.
Is there no movement for a Canadian Republic, even today?
@DonegalRaymie201 Putting The Hardcore French Aside, I'd Say About 8% Don't Want Any Thing To Do With The Monarchy. 5% Don't Count Because They Think Canada & The US Should Merge, Most Of Them Couldn't Debate On Why, They Don't Understand History, They Just Get The Stupid Idea Burned Into There Head From Watching American TV. Preposterous Thinking. I Know I'm Getting A Little Off Topic, But If You Have Time, Watch My " The War Of 1812 - Canada" Thats What Separates Most Of North America.
@MapleBalls If you definition includes "doing exactly what we tell you to", then yes, I guess she's in charge. She wields as much real power as the Canadian flag does.
@Everstruggling Its More Of A Historical Thing Really. She Has Those Powers Because We Have Trust & We Allow It, But Really She Doesn't Use Them. I Personally Don't Have Any Problems With The System @ All. Some People Might Get Mad @ What I'm About To Wright, But Its True. One Of Canada's Most Distinctive Properties Is That We Aren't American Or British, We Are In-between With A Dash Of French). Remember We Are A Young Country. Our First OFFICIAL Flag (the maple leaf) Was In The 1960s.
@MapleBalls I don't particularly have a problem with the current system either. Personally, I like that we are part of the Commonwealth. I'm glad that she's the official Head of State instead of Hitler...er.. Harper. My only point is that it's misleading to say that the Queen/King is in charge in Canada because to most people "in charge" means that she has anything other than ceremonial powers. And trust me, I know it's a young country. I watched the Constitution Act 1982 being signed.
@Everstruggling Same here i have no problem with being part of the commonwealth and having the Queen as a figure head but it bothers me when people from other countries ... mainly the us ... think she runs Canada when in fact she really has no say :/ Its also bothering when people say Canada has no military but ...
@Everstruggling i agree, you take a look at the roman republic, or modern day america, and you see how fucking stupid their govenment structure and politics are, and as much as i hate the idea of royalty in the 21st century, i think canada can have all the freedoms you really need with a reasonable limit and with a different but far more effective government when compared to republics... britian did set us up here, least we can do is not shoot them in the back for it like the US
Thanks for your reply, but can you elaborate a bit? Which half of Canada would "cry for war" as you put it, and who wanted Canada to stay out of it?
Don't be offended but I think of Canadians, as being descended from either French or Scots settlers, much more so than English, maybe I'm wrong?
And BTW, while I think WW1 was essentially a waste of life caused by strutting European powers, WW2 was very different. Hitler alone was spoiling for War in the 1930's & Euro ethnic cleansing!
@DonegalRaymie201 Cry For War: All English Canadians Who Weren't Told Personal Stories Of WW1 From A Family Member, Anyone Out Of Work (from the depression), Young Men & Women Looking For An Adventure Or Excitement, Hardcore British Loyalists, Old School French Canadians That Forgave France & Still Feel An Attachment (verry little from this group.) Before WW2 Canada Was MOSTLY Made up Of British, American, Scott, Irish, French & Polish Immigrants.
@DonegalRaymie201 Your 100% Correct On The WW2, It Was All In His Plan To Rally The People Behind Him, He Worked On That For Years Before He Made His Big Move.
I wonder if anyones knows that RUSSIANS lost 27 MILLIONS (!!!) and germans 20 millions in WW2????
