These species are closely related to the pygmy killer whale (Feresa attenuata), but less closely related to the killer whale (Orcinus orca). The term 'dwarf killer whale' is not an officially recognized species or name, and has been applied to a sub-species or new species of small killer whale found in Antarctica, but not to the pilot whale.

I think it would have been better to say Hectors dolphin instead of Maui's because Maui's is a subspecies of Hectors. I feel so sorry for the Maui's subspecies! There's only 110 left around New Zealand!

@Herpoburpo Hector's is mentioned as well - so we've got 'em both. It is indeed a bummer about the poor Maui's - they are listed as Critically Endangered.The WWF website has some great info for anyone interested in learning more about them.

I keep having this reoccuring dream about a baby dolphin. The first few times it showed up in my bathtub, then I carried it around and showed it to my family outside, but they didn't seem to care much. Now it's at the creek, when it's kind of early and there isn't enough morning light to see quite clearly. Then the dolphin jumps out of the creek and rolls over. That was really funny! xD lol Then it flopped on it's stomach and I pet it. =3

@meadowluv The Baiji (or Yangtze River dolphin - Lipotes vexillifer) was declared 'functionally extinct' in December 2006 by a group of experts who were unable to find a single animal after an exhaustive search.
