Be sure to check out the 1973 David Bowie cover; it's quite good. Bowie uses a distorted guitar and a sax playing a unison riff in the chorus - it's a great arrangement.
I ask myself this every single day. Toss the paper, shut off the radio and TV, turn off the computer, and then go out and live your life. No news is good news. Today's music just doesn't get it -- it never will.
@numchar You're right! "Where have all the good songs gone?" Actually they are still here but we have to go back a couple of decades and beyond to find them; Back to the days when you can hear the words in a song. Also there was better use of instrumentation to go along with lyrics that were more about love, inspiration, real life analogies, and energizing feelings. Today's music is junk compared to the 60's, 70's, and 80's. I work with teenage and young 20's kids who say so themselves.
how easy it is to make imperious comments online and forget that when you cover a song, you're very often dealing with the very people who created a context where you could become popular. and this is coming from a van halen fan.
Love the Bowie version off Pin Ups. The entire album is good, and it's comprised of covers from famous bands like The Who, The Kinks and Pink Floyd. Worth a listen at least.
Like all Kinks song fits 2011, 1979,1969. they all still work...... from the oldies like this to gallon of gas, catch menow i,m falling from the come back album...........kinks and the clash are the 2nd and 3rd best uk bands ever(we all know 1)which means they might be 2 and 3 worldwide
Why is it that everybody bitches about the radio "these days" and how music sucks "these days". Fuck that. Leave your house, turn off your radio. There are kids in your town rocking, right now. They might not be the Kinks, but they could use the attendence, the CD sales, and encouragement. Basically, radio hates everyone except 12 year old girls. That's who buys CD's, that's the music on your radio. Figure it out, corporate America won't feed you cool music when there is no profit motive.
I went to a couple of live shows. They were crude beyond belief. I always end up at the wanna be frank zappa show. Were are the live bands like the kinks? I may need a time machine to the 1960's.
@DrReaper It's gonna take a little while to find the good ones, but sometimes the bad ones figure it out too. It depends alot on the city you live in. Go see Monotonix. Their lead singer used to captain a tank.
you guys talk like you dont know the difference between this and van halens version, well the difference is that the kinks were pretty damn original for their time, very few people were doing music like this in their time, van halen and every other newer band had older bands to copy, and redo the songs the originals WROTE!!, thats the difference
Supergrass also did a pretty good version live in the 90's too.But how could anyone prefer a cover of a Kinks song to the original. That's just krazy.Kontroversial
it has the dreary tone to it, but that is what i love so much about it. He draws the song in such a dreary way like he's Bob Dylan and that makes this the song with the most soul.
Great song, great clip. The Kinks are my favourite band. It's one of my reason to learn to speak english well ( I'm french lol ). I want to be able to understand all they say without need to go on a site. Love the Kinks <3
( Erm... I love other bands too, and Kinks are not my first reason to learn english, of course, but it's ones. It makes me more motivated )

@BigDaddyB70 No disrespect to the Kinks but I also prefer the more upbeat lively version of Van Halen because it has SOUL. Kinks version is good but it does not have SOUL in it.
Until now I always thought this was VH' song, but with all do respect to Ray Davies Van Halen owns this one. But I guess it's also a matter of preference, not to mention a 20+ year time gap. This reminds me of when Motley Crue covered The Beatles Helter Skelter, both great versions, just different generations. But I will thank Ray for writing it, but it will in my mind always be VH' song.

@bluebrett70 exacltey. The kinks version is boring. Van Halen gave it energy. This version just sllowwwwwly drraaaggggssss ooonnnnn, while Vh's is up tempo and exciting, and they made the chorus very catchy.
@bluebrett70 I always thought it was a VH song too. You learn a lot on youtube. I like the Kinks original but you gotta give VH some credit, their cover is fantastic.
@RManFlint I look at VH's version this way. I LOVE their version. I like Kinks music, but never heard this song until VH did it. I think their version is a rockin' version that was done out of respect for the Kinks if anything.
@RManFlint I look at VH's version this way. I LOVE their version. I like Kinks music, but never heard this song until VH did it. I think their version is a rockin' version that was done out of respect for the Kinks if anything.
@TheLadySpartan I highly agree. Thank goodness for the Kinks and their music. But VH's version of this is more up tempo and rockin with Mike's bass and Eddie's guitar.
As both a Van Halen and a Kinks fan i like both versions. You might not like VH as a band but they had a eye for good music and the Kinks were high on their priority list. After all their first top 40 hit was a remake of "You Really Got Me" and actually led me to discover the Kinks music, so it was a win-win situation both ways.
Personally, I like Van Halen's better. Maybe I'm biased because VH is my favorite band. BUt even so, you really can't compare the two. The Kinks were a British Invasion rock group, Van Halen was an Amercian 80's hard rock/early glam metal band. Two totally different genres. Kinks fans should apppreciate the fact that VH respected the Kinks, and they should also realize that VH's version, whether they like it or not, is 1000xxx better than the shit on the radio today.
Sorry, tried van Halen for the first time tonight in my sorry-ass 56yrs, and have to say the minor chord dropdowns of the Kinks that made the song are nowhere to be found. I would have liked to have found them too. While trying to be broadminded, I have to declare that the The Kinks Rule!
Lets c, ray one night came up with this great song, he thought it, wrote it down on paper...his idea, yeah van halen did a decent cover of it...but the kinks created this masterpiece....end of story
although i dont care for VH's cover of this song, at least they apparently knew who the Kinks were. People who cant tell whether they're hearing the Kinks or Bob Dylan(scroll down) have a very shallow appreciation for rocknroll and i would assume they are missing a lot of great music. btw another really bad cover is Bon Jovi's "Glad All Over", originally by Dave Clark 5.
What a tune - everyone else writes anthems about feeling good and football and stuff, the kinks write about depression. Thats why they're amazing. Amongst a million other things...
Mm-mmm! Reminds me of cigarette butts, popcorn crumbs and cum stains - what happened to all the good times? Oh yeah, sorry the visuals are so dull but it looks like they never promoted this song.
@tarax59 well I'm surrounded by popcorn kernals, roaches (one better than merecigarette butts), and can't seem to keep the damn cum stains off my shirt. Cool, I guess the good times are still here afterall----rock on!
@ScottAln05 scott there are loads of skilled musicians playing pubs and clubs up and down the country.....perhaps VH should try playing a few.....by the way my favourite version of this song is on Bowies pin ups....
This is my top ten favourite songs done by The Kinks: :)
Waterlooo Sunset, Lola, You really got me, Days, Shangri La, Where have all the good times gone, All day and all of the night, Im Not Like Everybody Else, Sunny Afternoon, Picture book.
I believe That Van Halen Idolized( The Kinks)! The Kinks Rule!Their version tells the story. In the time the Kinks grew up! I like all three versions each has it's own appeal! David Bowie covered it too!
@FaerieCrone Better production. Better musicians. That doesn't mean the passion of the original isn't evident. Sorry, but my wax is gone and my head is squarely on my shoulders. Van Halen, like most who played Dylan songs, do it better than the original. There is nothing wrong with that.
@FaerieCrone Or maybe they just like a different type of music. You know, the type where Van Halen too a god and turned it into a rock monster with You Really Got me
@FaerieCrone I must totally agree with you! As much as I like VH, I never particularly cared for the Diver Down album, which was mostly covers. And they DIDN'T do a very good job covering this song.
@DiamondDavidLee8 Lol oh I'm an idiot? And what has Davis Lee Roth done lately? He's an old dinosaur too. Newer music doesn't necessarily make it better music, and the Kinks didn't have to swivel their hips and wear tight trousers to sell records!
@FaerieCrone old dinosaur? Like the Kinks? Tight trousers & hip-swiveling, what are you, seventy? Can't let the kid see such vulgarities as hip-swaying!
@MisterSynyster No you fool, I meant that the Kinks WROTE great songs (including this one) and had natural talent, and didn't have to stoop to flashy gimmicks. I don't know how you can mock the Kinks last hit when David Lee Roth hasn't done anything in years, so get a clue. Conversation over.
@FaerieCrone Cause the Kinks are still going strong these days, right? And Diamond Dave isn't still doing shows or anything right? Also, the Kinks name is a "cheap gimmick" trying to be popular through outrage over a strong sexual word in our Puritan society such as "Kink"
@gnizak "Let it be" was released in 1970, so it's not a reference. But there's a clear reference to "Yesterday" ("yesterday was such an easy game FOR YOU to play").
And how appropriate...BECAUSE TODAY'S MUSIC IS FUCKING HORRIBLE!

@FaerieCrone Or maybe they just like a different type of music. You know, the type where Van Halen too a god and turned it into a rock monster with You Really Got me
SpiritKnob 1 year ago
@FaerieCrone I must totally agree with you! As much as I like VH, I never particularly cared for the Diver Down album, which was mostly covers. And they DIDN'T do a very good job covering this song.

@FaerieCrone Fuck You

@fraroc I didn't say I hated VH. I just don't like them doing cover versions. I prefer their self written material, okay? Now...breathe...

@FaerieCrone
I am fond of Bowie's version, though.

the kinks music rocks!

@FaerieCrone You are an idiot.Kinks music died in 1978 and 1982, they have been outstaged by the masters of Rock. The Rock Gods of any generation.
DiamondDavidLee8 8 months ago
@DiamondDavidLee8 Lol oh I'm an idiot? And what has Davis Lee Roth done lately? He's an old dinosaur too. Newer music doesn't necessarily make it better music, and the Kinks didn't have to swivel their hips and wear tight trousers to sell records!
FaerieCrone 8 months ago
@FaerieCrone old dinosaur? Like the Kinks? Tight trousers & hip-swiveling, what are you, seventy? Can't let the kid see such vulgarities as hip-swaying!
MisterSynyster 8 months ago
@MisterSynyster No you fool, I meant that the Kinks WROTE great songs (including this one) and had natural talent, and didn't have to stoop to flashy gimmicks. I don't know how you can mock the Kinks last hit when David Lee Roth hasn't done anything in years, so get a clue. Conversation over.
FaerieCrone 8 months ago
@FaerieCrone Cause the Kinks are still going strong these days, right? And Diamond Dave isn't still doing shows or anything right? Also, the Kinks name is a "cheap gimmick" trying to be popular through outrage over a strong sexual word in our Puritan society such as "Kink"

Anybody else notice all the beatles references? In my life, Yesterday, Let it Be, even though this was written before some of those.

Referencing something even though it was written before? WTH dude...
pane02 1 year ago
@gnizak "Let it be" was released in 1970, so it's not a reference. But there's a clear reference to "Yesterday" ("yesterday was such an easy game FOR YOU to play").

Van Halen does Kinks songs better, not once but twice.
Mystifier122 2 years ago
Wish I knew where all the good times have gone. Yes, I do hear a little Dylan-esqueness in the jangly guitar line.

I've always found the opening lines for this piece sound like Bob Dylan - anyone else hear it in there?
