  • Nice. Which knot did you use for sliding the tarp up & down the pole/ limb? Thanks

  • Great video! Thx

  • i e tool a wide and deep rain ditch also just in case, and a hooch over it!good video!

  • i have the same backpack, knee pads, and shovel. fascinating.

    very informative man! (Y)

  • @Equip2Endure What mattress are you using it looks comfortable?

  • I build all my shelters off the ground. It only takes me and extra 30 mins at most to do it, but, its well worth the time. Ground is where you lose most of your body heat, it keeps creepy crawlies off of you, and you fill the space under your shelter with "hot rocks". I build mine about 6 inches off the ground. I fill-in the back and sides with brush, leaves, whatever around, then add 10-20 hotrocks under that and the heat from underneath is quite warm for half the night. Just my opinion.

  • Nope. You just pull out your light saber and gut a taun-taun. Can't stay any warmer than that.

  • How to survive with 60kg of high-tech equipment, lol

This activity creates illusion of skill, but in real extreme situation all u will have will be your vary pants and some scrap in pockets.

  • you take your dog with you? that is so cool!

  • Can you do a video showing how to construct that camp chair sometime. Not sure if you have since this video has been posted. I have just started watching from the first video posted and just got to this one. Great stuff. Thanks

  • I like the acorn trick to help tie off the mylar.

  • @Equip2Endure

Id love to see a "I have a knife and lighter" type of shelter.

  • good job man

    thanks for sharing

  • Good post mate, you should apply to join and serve a s a SAS soldier!

  • Ich hab dich abboniert als ich den Vorspann schon geshen hab und hab es bis jetzt nicht bereut :D

    (translate.google.de)

  • just wanna know what kind of a dag you had thare? grtz from holland

  • i don't build reflective fires for my cold weather shelters any more, i dig a trench deep enough to bury a line of hot 'fire ring' rocks and cover them with 8 inches of soil. then put my bedding down on top and cover my self with a tarp... this technique will keep me quite warm for about 8 to10 hours in below freezing temperatures with zero smoke and zero fire maintenance. also an excellent treatment for emergency wilderness hypothermia victims but you need to get in the sleeping bag with them.

  • With taking all that gear, shovel, mylar blanket, etc.,. you might as well just bring a tent. How can you talk about survival training with all that gear? When I do survival (minimum 1 full week every winter), I bring only the clothes on my back and if there is snow, I do bring a jacket (no gloves or hat). I suggest you revise your narration to not take away from those of us that do real survival outings.

  • @RobotInsanity wow that sounds crazy do you think you could make a informational survival video series out of that?

  • @MyBsAcc He probably sleeps inside the snow.

  • @ForTheFutureOfMusic LIKE A BOSS

  • PLEASE Dont get me wrong! I think the "concept" is great!!! My point was the tent is about the same weight but provides more space. ALSO a tent, BY LAW, has to be fire-resistent. The tarp is not! And, you will tend to build a fire closer to the tarp then to a tent. I guess its just preference. I feel the tent is a better option. It offers faster setup, better protection from the elements, more space. And it packs up in about the same space and weight as a tarp. Just my opinion, Thanks...

  • I'm liking the foil liner

  • wool makes my eyes itch! wat do?

  • So just to be clear, you & your mates actually sleep-out in these emergency style shelters as practice for the real thing should it happen to you? With this in mind, do you keep a woolen blanket/s & a space blanket (foil) in the boot of the car or your back pack? If that's right, then do you also include some survival food? I'm thinking it's not such a bad idea to make a bag & leave it in the boot of the car. You never know when it might come in handy.

  • @BelloBudo007 smart idea. i was a high adventure scout.done some insane hiking and camping which led my desire to go on trips deep into nature w/o any impact of civilization...i always have a surv. pack in my vehicle and a go-bag in my house. being prepared is the best action you can take. i do ST as well.

  • @theblackcatofpb - Q about the food & other stuff in your bag please. Dried, dehydrated or canned? Perhaps there's something better? I assume matches or firestarter, knife and torch. Anything else essential before the bag becomes too large to leave in the car?

  • And if it gets REALLY cold, you can always jump in your car and run the heater..... :-)

  • I always enjoy watching outdoor videos, and good to see people doing stuff, but I used to make shelters like this when I was 7. And something that is rarely mentioned is warming the ground first. only need a fire for 20 minutes with small twigs, this also dries the ground out.

  • "if you are not always prepared, you are never prepared?" Is that similar to "if you are not always sleeping, you are never sleeping?" Makes no sense if you think about it, you need a new catch phrase.

  • A little tip may be to put out the fire at night and use those hot stones to warm your shelter. I'd rather wake up cold than on fire.

  • i just got back from a three day ,two night winter camp. it was around 24 F or -10 C. I was nice and warm in my Canadian Armed Forces sleeping bag and ranger blanket.no fire

  • let's see ace

  • nice car

  • I just find it amazing anyone brings any of this stuff. But maybe I'm spoiled as a Canadian. We have Spruce Pine in Canada. It makes a home, a drink, fire, rain proofing, candles/torches(sap), and rope(roots). If you have Spruce Pine around...you need nothing else.

  • @JonnyCashmore i find it amazing that anyone goes into the woods without a basic pack. no matter how much you know or what natural resources you have available. to do so just kind of smacks of arrogance and stupidity. both of which add up to a s and r team finding a dead body

  • You should insulate your underside when you sleep. Put a layer of leaves or pine braches underneath you to make a mattress. The can ground sap heat out of you if it is cold. Put something more then a thin layer of blankets between you and it.

  • Intresting video. I sugest you dont try that with snow in the setting, might be you dont wake up in the morning.

  • I find it "funny" That most people making survival videos do not carry a 2 man or even 4 man light weight tent and sleeping bag! My 4 man tent weighs the same as a large tarp. And my sleeping bag weighs about the same as a heavy wool blanket! And, they take up about the same amount of room in my truck or on my back pack! AND, can be set up in about 3 minutes!

  • @3zonker8 I find it "funny" that people equate survival with camping. What happens when an ember hits your tent and puts holes in it? How many times have you improvised a shelter? Just a thought. Enjoy your camping trips.

  • .weather.com/weather/today/Oulu+Finland+FIXX0013

  • here is some weather detail if u want to see whats winter u pussy :D .wunderground. com/ history /airport /EFSO /2012/02/06/ DailyHistory.html

  • so wheres thre winter :D hahahah... I wan't u to come and make that in to here now when it's winter :D

  • I wanted to see your dog :(

  • ***Northern Outfitters put a man on a lake at -40F for 40 days and nights. The special foam is all that is needed. It is just thick enough to insulate, but more importantly, it takes all the water off of you *very efficiently. If you look at their gear, keep in mind they have TWO insulators, one for +35F to -10F, and one for -40F. ONLY use the one for your climate, you may overheat and die. The skin is just that, a water resistant, breathable Cordura skin. They also have a -60F system.

  • dont put forced ads in the vids

  • It doesn't look like there is much ground insulation. Doesn't the ground suck the warmth out of you during the night the way that is set up?

  • Car on the left <-

  • chuck norris would sleep outside naked

  • @patdawn1 If chuck norris slept.

  • this is one of my favorite videos on youtube

  • Great shelter vid man. Really enjoyed it! Btw, where did you get the multi-cam beanie?!

  • the "pushing" of heat is not really how heat radiation works, but i like your general idea.

  • very informative, thank you! :]

  • Awesome shelter man. Love your videos

  • Useful video. Excellent advice about wool blanket. ANY wool blanket. Wool is the real miracle fiber; It can get wet and still keep you warm, it's flame resistant (and won't melt and bond to your skin like synthetics if it does catch fire.

  • Pretty cool video adam!!

  • I thought that when you said said "Ace," you were referring to a friend named Ace. Then you said something about waking up to a shivering puppy and uh, yeah. Glad I figured out who Ace was later in the video.

  • To be honest, I recognize this from the show Dual Survival, however that episode was aired AFTER this came out I believe. Dave Canterbury mentioned that he's a subscriber to Equip2Endure so I'm wondering about that...

  • I have got to ask this what will people do when people can feed the dog any more. and dog start running in packs..I mean when the shit does really hit the fan In America people will not be able to afford to feed there dogs.now how does one handle a pack of 25 dogs. are a wolf pack. One man cant shoot them all.

  • Good stuff kid

  • I guess you needed another 2 dogs - that way you could have a "Three Dog Night". Not just the name of a rock group but an actual survival tactic.

  • witch wool blanket is that?

  • @iwalkedinawall Its an Italian Wool Blanket.

  • @Equip2Endure They're the best. Dave Canterbury uses one too :)

  • @iwalkedinawall A wicked witch wool blanket

  • @97sniper, yes. I'm looking for a decent shovel that won't loosen up and or snap as soon as I use it for anything but scooping sand.

  • acorn trick cool,ever thought about it...thanks

  • QUICK tip put some sort of clear wrap in front of you. makes it where the heat cant escape.

  • last time i did this my face got bite by some small creature and my ear swelled up, easier and safer to buy a tent or build a yurt. of course when u have no options..

  • What shovel is that on the right side of your shelter?

  • @TheDon427 does it matter to you

  • you mite not know this but how do you make a tent outta garbage bags?

  • @nickgor123 yeah, Dave Canterbury made a video with his nephew about shelter with a garbage bag.

    Here it is:

    /watch?v=E1prWOIC9lc&list=WL9C2E6E5A055BE00E&index=3&feature=plpp_video

  • well i dont hike any more just a short walk in the woods but one should do this in there back yard to see how it works if not can run back inside try again next night till you get it right

  • Nice expedient shelter.

  • Neo? Is that you?

  • Nice trick/tip for the heat shield you showed there, what kind of tent do you have in the background? Nice video!

  • nice shealter man

  • great video well done

  • @ bander87 you're not really wild camping until you're at least 10 yards from your lovely, warm and dry car, lol

  • Nicely done Sir!

  • ponchillow

    this will keep ya warm!

  • Great video! One tip i can give is while most man made fibers are very flamable, a very good flame retardent man made material is denim material. Denim Jeans will literally absorb heat until it disintagrates before burning. Just a tip. Great shelter!

  • @SalemGhost I'm fairly certain denim is 100% cotton which is a 100% natural fiber. It is good against flames but very bad when wet and wouldn't be my first choice for camping.

  • @Platinum1812 I apologise i wrote the wrong material. Ive found a new material that will literally disintegrate before it burns i forgot the true naame and mistakenly put denim! Im only human

  • @SalemGhost I see, no problem. Perhaps you were thinking of nomex? I picked up a surplus flight suit made of that and it isn't bad. Welding sparks still take a toll on it but its pretty good otherwise.

  • the smell of smoke on my clothes and gear, could help hide your human sent.

  • A car was parked on the left hand side... errmmm... why not sleep in the car?!

  • @smurfbike kinda ruins the point of wilderness survival training, hm?

  • @smurfbike it would probs be warmer to be outside next to a fire than being inside a car...

  • Please any advice on survival knives? hunting knives whatever. Just something that'd be durable, wont rust, and isnt TOO expensive

  • how much was the tarp

  • Enjoyed the info, thanks.

  • One trick might be to put 8 or 12 inches of leaves under your ground cloth, which gives you some insulation underneath as well as some more comfort. Of course dry leaves can turn into tinder pretty quick if you're not careful!

  • not sure if you watched the episode "shipwrecked" on dual survival, but cody makes a similar shelter with polyurithane clear plastic draped over so the long wave radiation permeates it, reflects off of the mylar, and traps the heat. 1/8 of the wood is needed for this function. slits in plastic can be made for ventilation. In my opinion, its weight vs. rate is worth it in a harsh winter survival situation. You and your dog will be toasty warm with that set up ill tell you now

  • Hey Adam, do you have a vid on pet training? I have a 2yr old wolf/husky mix and I find it hard to get him to stay focused when we go on a trek. He constantly wants to hunt every rodent that scampers into his line of sight. He also barks alot in the middle of the night when we are out camping, because of the night critters. And he just wont lay down when we're in our shelter so I have to make sure the fire is hot enough to keep him warm throughout the night, though his fur IS pretty thick.

  • Nice video. Very informative. The section about the concave area wasn't quite clear but the rest was great. What was with the A frame things you had lashed together?

  • LOL high winds will kill you.

  • i feel dumb i thought ace was a person, and that you were an ass for making him sleep in your first shitty shelter. now knowing he was a dog good job

  • I would be interested to so how you packed in the pieces you used to construct this shelter and how they compare weight wise to a standard 2-man tent.

  • U r noob thats soo easy! I am living next to wood and i made shelter, and ist for 4 persons and ist so much better than yours

  • @Goml3r Troll

  • @Goml3r wow! You are just so amazing! Wish I was you.....

  • Nice job! enjoyed!

  • I know that when I'm out in colder weather, I will use logs around the base of my shelter, pack in leaves and cover. Sleeping directly on the ground, even in warmer weather will suck the heat right out of you. So, I'm curious about why you didn't do something for ground cover?

  • What kind of tarp is that and cost?

  • I see his tent in the background, so it makes me think he's a wuss.

  • Just rewatched, great stuff. I'm about a lot of different things but it you're ever bored, check out what I'm into. I may have to someday depend on what you are teaching. Yet interestingly enough, a lot of what you teach brings us all closer to where we need to be.

  • Just curious, how much more efficient would a tipi type structure be at keeping a fire inside the shelter?

  • can you pls do a movie about your equipment pls? and send me thx;D

  • What would you do if it was raining?? It'll put down your fire. and you'll freez your ass. I was always wondering. Those shelters are made for perfect weather situations.

  • Thanks for the videos Adam. I've slowly been working my way through them. I see you have a camp shovel there with you. I have yet to find a decent folder. Have you encountered any that you are fairly happy with?

Thanks again for taking the time to make these videos.

  • good video thx for share keep making more stuff like this, it is a really nice way to keep life going on. thank again

  • I have never built anything but purly natural shelthers, I have never been freezing in those, but where i live there is mostly pine and spruce forrestation, which provides very good natural shelters, all from ground insulation to building materials for the shelther. I bring a sleeping bag good for -32 degrees celsius. So im not carrying more than hemp cordage for the shelter it self.

  • Do you notice how many times you say "you guys?" It is a common vocal tic among beginning presenters.

  • how come you have so many cuts in your video?

  • really ncie and informative vid! i´m not into hiking but would love to. but u know.. work and all these other things in life.. ;) Still its good to know how to make a shelter. Thx for ur efforts!

  • Good video. Very instructive .

  • Good Vidio.

  • cool video its helped me

  • Bro great video keep them coming

  • I am from Canada...I don't see this as cold weather survival....come try the snow with minus 45 with the windchill...then give me some cold weather survival tips.

  • @dooob69 its a general cold survival tip video mr. badass

  • what kind of backpack is that ??

  • nice man

  • that's more than I use for my regular camping trips into the Santa Lucia mountain range here in big sur, California. The terrain is some of the roughest, steepest terrain in the lower 48 states and the temperatures can range from below 20F at night to above 100F in the day. All I use for my shelter/bed is a canvas tarp and wool blanket, and a fire on cold nights. Your shelter does look nice and warm though. Good job.

  • Well done, but I would have built the rock wall higher to reflect more heat back toward you. Thanks for doing the video.

  • Have you ever taken and added a plastic tarp that the heat can go through, bounce off your blanket, and then keep the heat in your shelter?? Saw it on a survival tv show. It was a consistent 70 degrees inside the shelter.

  • That's more shelter than I use on my regular camping trips. A wool blanket and canvas tarp will get me through the roughest of nights, so long as I have a fire.

  • When we were kids we called this "building a den" and "camping". How come nowadays everyone is in a "survival situation"? It's bollicks!

  • What are the pants you are using in this video and many others. I've been looking for them but can't find them

  • Good shelter and all that but I am a bit curious as to what kind of temperatures you guys have during winter where your at because over here you usually get several metres of snow when we call it winter, otherwise it's just autumn :P

  • You talk too fast

  • This sounded so GAY until I found out Ace is a dog.

  • @Robikus I concure

  • @Robikus LMAO

  • @Robikus So following your train of thought bestiality is better than homosexuality? ;)

  • @MrAnthonyRizzo gay people......

  • @MrAnthonyRizzo OK, perhaps this needs spelled out, sleeping with a man implies sex, sleeping with a dog at your feet or side implies a loyal friend. I don't know many men who sleep together who aren't bumping uglies, but it is not uncommon to snuggle with a pet.

  • @ShadeToSun LOL! No it needs no explaining. The fact is that in a survival situation where it is really cold spooning with a dude, girl or dog will help conserve body heat for all parties involved. There need be no impure actions implied unless of course someone is grinding their pelvis against another. That is a whole other ball of wax!

  • @Robikus Beastiality FTW

  • @Robikus I was thinking the exact same thing... Then I was like trying to justify it in my mind.. Like oh its okay it's a survival situation and then I heard ACE was a dog and I was like OH THANK GOD lol

  • @jrdei906 You don't want to know how I took, 'had a shivering puppy in my back'.

  • @Robikus LOL!

  • great video. was expecting to see Ace. i really liked that you told us what you tried and failed at so i dont make that same mistake. that is what you call looking out for your fellow bushcrafters. i have a tarp i just got and havnt used yet but it is reflective on one side like the mylar. i think it will be perfect for this. just waiting for the rain to stop so i can go out and try this.

  • I did the same shelter with the clear plastic in front. 40 degrees and didn't need any blanket or anything.. Ended up putting clear plastic on top so I had easier access to put wood on fire PLUS I was afraid of starting a fire with all the dried leaves and wanted to see fire better without obstruction. Kept pile of wood by my head. Needed to get colder for plastic front or will get to hot inside.

  • i really like your videos keep it up!

  • Was that your Falcon 2 pack you had there? If so how did it hold up? :)

  • @TheSacredKier , yes it was and it's great!

    - Adam

  • @Equip2Endure I'm really thinking about buying one, but I'm afraid its to small. Can the pack atleast substain you for like 2 to 3 days if used wisely?

  • Comment removed

  • nice

  • Excellent, excellent video brother, you explained very well. I love to see well educated people helping others with their knowledge. Sincerely Whispering Cloud. Keep up the good work.

  • its surprising how effective shelters like this are. I just got back from a 3 week winter primitive camp / survival trip I used a very similer shelter on this trip.

  • how big is that tarp on top?

  • @DustinTheGoth , 7 X 5 I think. Lol, I will have to go check, I have so many tarps, lol

    - Adam

  • @parkermorgan88 , getting a GSD and A Rotty in a hammock would be a cool video! Lol, I would go with a lean-to.

    - Adam

  • Looks good mate, you need to be as comfortable. Al

  • i like your videos keep up the good work and if u could can u tell me how to add music and pictures to a video thanx

  • @survivalboy22 , you have to add the music in some video editing program. Like Microsoft Movie maker.

    - Adam

  • Put visqueen, 3mil clear plastic sheeting, in front and move the fire back and that set up will be toasty

  • Nice ideas, thanks for sharing, mate.

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahaahahahahahahahahahaahahahahaha

  • Adam, I have watched a few of your videos and have noticed a a lot of familiar training. Have you been the the USAF SERE school? BTW, I like your channel and keep up the good work.

  • @mattjo620 , Thanks, but no I have not to the USAF SERE School, it would be cool to go or train with those guys.

    - Adam

  • at least you admit it is a Bad location at the top of a hill.....

"Winter Shelter for Cold Weather Wilderness Survival"....i think not.

  • @jsmallwood2007 - Was thinking the same thing, southern winter maybe but nothing that would be usable here during our Canadian winters. It still has a lot of good info, b
