Your tone is fantastic. Very open, clear, and resonant. The only suggestion that I would make would be more contrast in the the first half. It seemed like the dynamics were on the same level for the whole page. But I really love the quality of your voice. :)
I would like to begin by saying you sound very lovely. I noticed someone ask why you were flipping your r's. As a vocal performance major preparing for a junior voice recital I learned The Crucifixion comes from his collection of songs known as The Hermit Songs. Barber asked Leontyne Price to debut these songs, including the Crucifixion, She rolled and flipped all of her r's. If you have a raphsody account you can listen to her sing them, with Barber playing the piano for the debut.
Honestly, my diction is mostly on instinct. I never actually worked this song with a teacher, as I wasn't studying with anyone when I recorded this. I definitely recommend working with a teacher or coach when singing any song, though! :)
oooh! well good job. I learned recently though, that you arent supposed to roll them if the composer is american...but obviously follow your own judgment. I was just wondering if you had different information. :)
Very nice and thank you for posting. I'm using your version for reference for a performance. Yours is the most accurate interperetation, and also very moving. It contains a much fuller sense of emotional expression due to not only vocal skill, but effective and proper use of the written dynamics and rhythmic feel. Meas. 7 piano chord comes after "Thee", meas. 22 piano comes before "-ther." Continued success & peace.
lol thanks for the comment. i'm glad i've shown improvement because the more i listen to this and other older recordings, the more i sound like nails on a chalkboard to myself! <3 u!
Thank you, Sharkbait! It definitely has its issues, but this was more an exercise in being able to put together a collage-type video than a true performance... so it DEFINITELY has its issues! But your kind words are appreciated nonetheless!
There are no sharps or flats in the signature, although it does use some contemporary harmonizations. Overall it sounds in A Minor. Hope that helps!
you do have a lovely voice, but this song doesn't sound as pure as it could because there's a bit of scooping going on, and you kind of chew into the consonants on the low notes. But overall it is lovely!
Thank you for your observations. I have to agree that there are some major issues going on, but most, if not all, have much to do with my breathing and placement. This recording was done over a year ago, when I hadn't had lessons in 2 years. Now that I'm back in school, I hope to correct these issues! :D
Yeah I LOVE the Youngs!!! I almost went to Jana's studio, but then I ended up transferring schools (I studied with Dr. Moses previously- aMAzing teacher!) I really do love the faculty at KSU. I hope you make the most of your time there and learn what you need to become an even better musician! :)
Yes, the Youngs are wonderful, and so is Dr Moses! Unfortunately I am done with my voice lessons, at this point I am preparing for my senior recital in April... very exciting... I just need to get the 'float' down pat, and I'll feel better!
I actually recorded a (don't kill me!) musical theater piece for a karaoke contest but I couldn't upload it. I was so pissed. But I promise as soon as I get some stuff together (or you just randomly feel like recording me) I will put some more stuff on here so I can be stupid for the whole world!
Very nice! you have a beautiful tone quality. I am a member of the female singer throat and vocal cords group on yahoogroups too9thus how I found this). I'm a r&b/pop vocalist though..however I do dabble in operatic techniques to improve my upper registers (I have a sample of that on my user page "high note sampler #3 oprea style" in case you are intrested) Nice to see more members on here :)
i love this song. and you did a wonderful job singing it.
i just wish the recording were better quality though :(
