  • @obesehairydog Well you've still got the chapel, the water tower and admin. The wards and corridors and the laundry etc were not that exceptional in any way. High Royds was a better example which is why most of that has been preserved.

I think it was largely the NHS trust that were the culprits. English Partnerships was just a clean up agent. Mothballing these places with minimal security never works. I'd say demolish or convert from day 1 or you end up with an eyesore and a hazard to all.

  • @obesehairydog Except we had a lot of fun smashing it of course! The same as people have fun taking photographs of it all. If you care to look at 28 DL there are the same "reports" over and over and over again. With similar photos of the same objects over and over and over again.

At least the some urbex crews add a little to the urban decay so that as the years pass you can at least see the ravages of time. Humans respond to change and that is life's tapestry. A state of ceaseless change.

  • @obesehairydog Yes, we are part of the new wave Urbex smash movement. Urban exploration (urbex smash crews) is also about smashing old buildings before they are demolished. I think you'll find that Cane Hill has been demolished now apart from admin and the chapel and water tower, so it made absolutely NO difference.

  • sweet :)

I wish I could have come with you and seen that great hospital!

  • i never got a chance to go to cane hill but i really wanted too but i went st. ebbas and iv'e been west park

  • does anyone know why the place went derelict?

  • @2009AdamH because of all the asbestos. old buildings were laced with the stuff. i think it cost to much money to keep open and with tablets being brought out to help mentally ill people there was not much need for the place, that's my theory on it

  • Shurrup man. They "studied the plans" Ain't that enough? They "studied the plans" maaaan. Don't you get it? They "studied the plans". Don't knock them. They "Studied the plans". Professional Architects maaaan. They "Studied the plans" maaan.

Couldn't draw a straight line between them. LMFAO.

Right. I'm off to study some plans maaan. And then maybe smash up some "stuff". Cos its fun maaan.

  • Luv this song. xxx

  • Anne Clark did a song called Cane Hill on her album Hopeless Case

  • song is appropriate 'cause it seems that (according to wikipedia) david bowie's family member was there for treatment...

  • He was and then he killd himself at coulsdon trainstation i think

  • this song goes really well with the video, its eerie but yet stylish and makes me think of how it would of been cos the song is kind of crazy... like the words

  • never understood´why people would wanna go there to vandalise it..... why?

track is great - video is great, but too many morons went to destory it - shame...

  • I just don't get it. Why are these places left like this. How come they are not stripped bare? Where does everybody go? And why?

  • Well two reasons for that. It was due to get smashed by the bulldozers anyway which has now happened so it doesn't matter if we smashed it or the bulldozers smashed it, the end result is the same.

Secondly, we enjoy smashing stuff. I can't see anything wrong with that if it is going to get smashed anyway.

By the way we are not morons, we studied the plans for the place and didn't break the admin block or the chapel which were preserved. Did you study Cane Hill or do you just randomly post?

  • Never said anything about you being a moron... but if you want to refer to yourself that way who am I to argue. I also dont make any reference about your ,, need to release by 'smashing stuff''.

I am in Australia. I research as much as I can. I can assure you, if places like this were left, they would be ransacked, stripped, vandalised etc within days.

    What's with the attitude?

  • Actually I think this comment fits better with the person above me. Perhaps.....

  • what even with security guards & police ? lol

  • Wow these hospitals n stuff are crazy, they just decided to abandon it one day and just went up and left it, the beds are made and stuff, scary.

  • It was slowly closed down over a period of about 10 years. Fantastic to explore and smash the old stuff up. There was plenty to break and wreck in there!

  • Assholes like you are the ones who destroy the experience for the rest of us, dont destroy the stuff in there, let others see the past.

  • It's already been demolished now. The only bits saved were the chapel, admin and the water tower.

Incidentally, no need for personal attacks. If you don't agree with another person's viewpoint, the comments section is here to debate the pros and cons of the situation :)

  • Charlie Chaplins mum went here aswell

  • The reason that this track would have been used is that David Bowie's brother went to this asylum.

  • when did you shoot this video - it looks like a long time ago, since the walls look nice. What is that at 1.26? (close up)?

  • I also see the person laying on the bed at 0:27

  • Wish I had that blueprint.

  • omg ther is a guy on the bed at 0:27!

  • great vid, amazing to have recordings of these places now they're all getting torn down.......... i went west park asylum recently, was amazing to see all the patients personal belongings with my own eyes

  • for real. we're the last people in history that are gonna see these places. i made a video of west park, very atmospheric place thats getting knocked down soon too

  • All I have to say is, great job!!

  • I just wanted to congratulate the imagination and expression that has gripped me to this wonderful and stunning piece of film, Im sure many of you would agree the marriage between film and sound are both wonderful and heart breaking at the same time. The film really does capture the sadness of the moment left by its victims and portrays the obsolescence and redundancy of its remains.

  • absolutely love your video... love the pics, the music - everything.....

  • want 2 see the real cane hill see mi vids

  • great video - perfect choice of music too.

  • wish i went inside der. everytime me nd m8s went up der we got escorted off by da guards and der dogs lol

  • A moving video, captures the atmosphere of the abandoned building.

  • they used.this building......in u know the vidio......infinity.2008 by guru....if u know the place and have seen it.....and climbed the walls....lmao......at the start of that vid is cane hill she goes into there...

  • Í always remember Terry when I see this.

    Tanx for sharing!

    Maro

  • i'm ment to be visiting this place on wednesday, is it even possible to get in?

  • My mum and dad used to live near there. could see it through the trees. Was very spooky at night. whos laying on the 3rd bed along at :26??

  • Most likely a friend of the person filming.

  • Charlie Chaplin's mother was put in Cane Hill after she broke down and went insane. Chaplin (once he became successful in Hollywood) later got her out.

  • how the fuck did you get in there without bein' eaten by the guard dogs? the securitys well high round there these days cos its so dangerous... full'a asbestos n shit apparently. x

  • why is this place abandoned? Wouldn't they normally keep these documents scattered?

  • what i'm wondering is why everything is left at these abandon mental hospitals i mean the beds, medicine, medical records, sometimes even the patians clothes

  • They leave everything because its government funded, No one loses out except the tax payer.

If a company closed or when bust everything inside the buildings would be sold on at auction.

  • on 1:36 it kinda looks like michael myers standing there lolz

  • why the hell do you people "smash" things up. do you think its cool or something. y cant you just enjoy exploring the damnn building and let everything be

  • i wanna see an asylum 2008 al the ones iv seen r run down or let visiters in ,i wanna c one were ppl r actually held today :)

  • totaly me to !!!

  • Thats wild how they have everything out, It's like, when the shut it down, they set everything up perfect for Urban Explorers. Great stuff, would love to go there!

  • Cane Hill was great. I've smashed stuff there with my girlfriend (well she doesn't like smashing, she just takes photos). But anyway, Rooks doesn't like us going on about smashing, so let's concentrate on the positive side of urban exploring and celebrate what a great place Cane Hill was!

  • wait wait wait so it was awsome and fun but it was a mental institution?

  • Urbex boot boy song:

To the tune of "We Hate Arsenal"

Ohhh... we hate English Partnerships and we hate English Partnerhsips,

We hate English Partnerships and we hate English Partnerhsips,

We hate English Partnerships and we hate English Partnerhsips,

We are the English Partnerships, hate us !

  • Haha funny.

I feel English Partnerships could have done better plans for this site, perhaps retaining a couple of examples of the ward blocks which were in better condition. They could have been used for flats.

  • Good comment. English Partnerships have a lot to answer for. They have no sympathy for the historical aspects. Petition the Government on this luncacy, they should be locked up in Cane Hill.

  • This place was really great for smashing things up. Our urbex group has smashed a pile of stuff there. Some of the floor were so rotten you could crash things through to the ward below. We smashed up old sinks and toilets too.

It's being demolished now though. The admin block and chapel will be saved I believe.

  • Heads up guys. demolition has commenced June 2 2008. If you want to get in and smash the hell out of the place you've only got a few months.

Demo will take about 18 months but the last half of that all they will be doing is crushing bricks, burning stuff, and pulling out the foundations/eathworks. So basically you've got about 6 months left to smash/explore.

By the way, chapel, admin, and the water tower are to be saved, so DONT smash stuff in those buildings.

  • You scumbag vandal !!!

  • what happened to bowies half bro?

  • suicide

  • Of all the Urbexers that've explored the place....

why hasn't anybody rode the spaz bike at 2:37,and took a pic?

isn't some parts being saved (chapel etc)?

doubt i'll ever get to see it :(

any NW explorers going? hint hint :D

  • i have been there lol i live near it

  • Aren't the bulldozers moving in any time? :(

  • I believe parts have already gone, Cane Hill was a big one, something like 5000 patients at it's peak, a massive sprawling site with it's own chapel, mortuary, dentist...

  • awesome vid, and what an location! got to explore this one to.

  • They should re-open this place into the new Aushwitz

  • Awesome!

    5 stars

  • Great vid :) would love to go and do an explore before it crumbles into nothing.

  • If I were there I would be collecting some souveniers

  • Great video, i just wished you stuck more to your vidcam shots.Anyway cheers mate from Niagara Falls Can.I highly doubt i will ever see the place before it falls down, considering i live across the pond.

  • Where is this Asylum Located? Great video. Cant believe at all stuff left behind. You should check out my vid on classic mental institution.

  • It's in South London :)

  • in coulsdon, i've been there :D, its proper strange, u get a strange aura about the place

  • thats the maudsley! Cane Hill is in Coulsdon...get it right before you reply yeah!

  • It is really sad to see like abandoned buildings like that. with like stuff still in it.

It's kinda creepy to think about the patients that once were in there.

  • Some say that there is an underground tunnel that leads to the centre of the Earth, i find that hard to believe, but it is true. i've also heard that if you turn on the taps in the building, the water comes out sideways instead of downwards, again, hard to believe, but very true.

  • Very constructive! The artist's brother was actually sent to this asylum so I thought the music was most apt. Can't please everyone eh? ;)

  • He said later on thats what he wrote "The Bewlay Brothers" about.

  • He and his bro Terry.

  • Can't believe you got inside! I really wanna go here, but I live a fair bit away, proper good video!

  • Another great vid! Dying to see this place in person, looks fucking amazing!

  • wicked vidio iv walked my dogs up there for years one of my favarite films one flew over the cuckoos nest i see every time i gaze through the railings - sadness-happiness-funnytimes-goodtimes-badtimes-hope- ...........thanx for great vid

  • so when we going back rooks he he :)

  • nice video. Someday I'll go to a place like this :)

  • This is a fantastic video. I worked for three weeks in 1983 sorting out their filing system! There were some very sad and also some lovely people. The grounds were peaceful and beautiful at lunchtime. David Bowie did make visits in plain clothes. I think his mother might have been there at one time too. It all looks so different now looking up from the junction at Coulsdon.

  • That's incredible, thanks for sharing-I love hearing stories like that :)

  • His poor bro jumped from a window there. Tore Bowie to pieces from what I understood. They were really tight as kids he said.

  • they say there's a basement full of 3000 dead body's

  • Some say, that according to legend... that is absolute bullshit. Good video rooks, we were up at the hill for about 5 hours yesterday

  • Ha ha ha ha good reply!

  • amazing footagee:)

    big washing machines haha

  • How The Hell Did U Get in? Im looking to check it out, but it looks well fenced. Can U LEt me know how u got in, cheers!!

  • could you contact me im doing a docuemntary on the place and would like to talk to you ?

    thanks johnnie

  • Well done, excellent video.

  • awesome video, im yet to get in after many many attempts, i really hope i can before its too late :(

  • you could open up your own medical eqipment shop with that lot

  • Cool video, think I recognise you from 28dl.

Of all the places in the world that aren't guarded by men with big guns, Cane Hill is up there top of my list.

  • Excellent video footage! It must have been fascinating to be inside! I can see the tower from my house. It amazes me that the authorities just leave it to fester. Such a waste. Apparently Michael Caines mother was a resident there many years ago too.

  • Yes it was David Bowie's half brother called Terry Burns.

  • Didnt David Bowies brother go there?

  • Absolutely loads-its fascinating stuff ;)

  • great video, did you find any patient reports?

  • Hey dude. I used to go explore cane hill and the tunnels under the fields next to the hospital. I gave up when I found myself standing on a god knows how old decomposing asbestos tile in the tunnels. yuk. Probably not got long left now...... Thanks alot Cane Hill.....

  • dont lie is dat what dat soft shit is on the floor

  • It's a collection of my last two trips over the last couple of years

  • Good montage of clips etc....what year?
