@obesehairydog Well you've still got the chapel, the water tower and admin. The wards and corridors and the laundry etc were not that exceptional in any way. High Royds was a better example which is why most of that has been preserved.
I think it was largely the NHS trust that were the culprits. English Partnerships was just a clean up agent. Mothballing these places with minimal security never works. I'd say demolish or convert from day 1 or you end up with an eyesore and a hazard to all.
@obesehairydog Except we had a lot of fun smashing it of course! The same as people have fun taking photographs of it all. If you care to look at 28 DL there are the same "reports" over and over and over again. With similar photos of the same objects over and over and over again.
At least the some urbex crews add a little to the urban decay so that as the years pass you can at least see the ravages of time. Humans respond to change and that is life's tapestry. A state of ceaseless change.
@obesehairydog Yes, we are part of the new wave Urbex smash movement. Urban exploration (urbex smash crews) is also about smashing old buildings before they are demolished. I think you'll find that Cane Hill has been demolished now apart from admin and the chapel and water tower, so it made absolutely NO difference.
@2009AdamH because of all the asbestos. old buildings were laced with the stuff. i think it cost to much money to keep open and with tablets being brought out to help mentally ill people there was not much need for the place, that's my theory on it
Shurrup man. They "studied the plans" Ain't that enough? They "studied the plans" maaaan. Don't you get it? They "studied the plans". Don't knock them. They "Studied the plans". Professional Architects maaaan. They "Studied the plans" maaan.

Right. I'm off to study some plans maaan. And then maybe smash up some "stuff". Cos its fun maaan.
this song goes really well with the video, its eerie but yet stylish and makes me think of how it would of been cos the song is kind of crazy... like the words
Well two reasons for that. It was due to get smashed by the bulldozers anyway which has now happened so it doesn't matter if we smashed it or the bulldozers smashed it, the end result is the same.
Secondly, we enjoy smashing stuff. I can't see anything wrong with that if it is going to get smashed anyway.
By the way we are not morons, we studied the plans for the place and didn't break the admin block or the chapel which were preserved. Did you study Cane Hill or do you just randomly post?
Never said anything about you being a moron... but if you want to refer to yourself that way who am I to argue. I also dont make any reference about your ,, need to release by 'smashing stuff''.
I am in Australia. I research as much as I can. I can assure you, if places like this were left, they would be ransacked, stripped, vandalised etc within days.
It was slowly closed down over a period of about 10 years. Fantastic to explore and smash the old stuff up. There was plenty to break and wreck in there!
It's already been demolished now. The only bits saved were the chapel, admin and the water tower.
Incidentally, no need for personal attacks. If you don't agree with another person's viewpoint, the comments section is here to debate the pros and cons of the situation :)
great vid, amazing to have recordings of these places now they're all getting torn down.......... i went west park asylum recently, was amazing to see all the patients personal belongings with my own eyes
for real. we're the last people in history that are gonna see these places. i made a video of west park, very atmospheric place thats getting knocked down soon too
I just wanted to congratulate the imagination and expression that has gripped me to this wonderful and stunning piece of film, Im sure many of you would agree the marriage between film and sound are both wonderful and heart breaking at the same time. The film really does capture the sadness of the moment left by its victims and portrays the obsolescence and redundancy of its remains.
they used.this building......in u know the vidio......infinity.2008 by guru....if u know the place and have seen it.....and climbed the walls....lmao......at the start of that vid is cane hill she goes into there...
Charlie Chaplin's mother was put in Cane Hill after she broke down and went insane. Chaplin (once he became successful in Hollywood) later got her out.
how the fuck did you get in there without bein' eaten by the guard dogs? the securitys well high round there these days cos its so dangerous... full'a asbestos n shit apparently. x
what i'm wondering is why everything is left at these abandon mental hospitals i mean the beds, medicine, medical records, sometimes even the patians clothes
why the hell do you people "smash" things up. do you think its cool or something. y cant you just enjoy exploring the damnn building and let everything be
Thats wild how they have everything out, It's like, when the shut it down, they set everything up perfect for Urban Explorers. Great stuff, would love to go there!
Cane Hill was great. I've smashed stuff there with my girlfriend (well she doesn't like smashing, she just takes photos). But anyway, Rooks doesn't like us going on about smashing, so let's concentrate on the positive side of urban exploring and celebrate what a great place Cane Hill was!
I feel English Partnerships could have done better plans for this site, perhaps retaining a couple of examples of the ward blocks which were in better condition. They could have been used for flats.
Good comment. English Partnerships have a lot to answer for. They have no sympathy for the historical aspects. Petition the Government on this luncacy, they should be locked up in Cane Hill.
This place was really great for smashing things up. Our urbex group has smashed a pile of stuff there. Some of the floor were so rotten you could crash things through to the ward below. We smashed up old sinks and toilets too.
It's being demolished now though. The admin block and chapel will be saved I believe.
Heads up guys. demolition has commenced June 2 2008. If you want to get in and smash the hell out of the place you've only got a few months.
Demo will take about 18 months but the last half of that all they will be doing is crushing bricks, burning stuff, and pulling out the foundations/eathworks. So basically you've got about 6 months left to smash/explore.
By the way, chapel, admin, and the water tower are to be saved, so DONT smash stuff in those buildings.
I believe parts have already gone, Cane Hill was a big one, something like 5000 patients at it's peak, a massive sprawling site with it's own chapel, mortuary, dentist...
Great video, i just wished you stuck more to your vidcam shots.Anyway cheers mate from Niagara Falls Can.I highly doubt i will ever see the place before it falls down, considering i live across the pond.
Some say that there is an underground tunnel that leads to the centre of the Earth, i find that hard to believe, but it is true. i've also heard that if you turn on the taps in the building, the water comes out sideways instead of downwards, again, hard to believe, but very true.
wicked vidio iv walked my dogs up there for years one of my favarite films one flew over the cuckoos nest i see every time i gaze through the railings - sadness-happiness-funnytimes-goodtimes-badtimes-hope- ...........thanx for great vid
This is a fantastic video. I worked for three weeks in 1983 sorting out their filing system! There were some very sad and also some lovely people. The grounds were peaceful and beautiful at lunchtime. David Bowie did make visits in plain clothes. I think his mother might have been there at one time too. It all looks so different now looking up from the junction at Coulsdon.
Excellent video footage! It must have been fascinating to be inside! I can see the tower from my house. It amazes me that the authorities just leave it to fester. Such a waste. Apparently Michael Caines mother was a resident there many years ago too.
Hey dude. I used to go explore cane hill and the tunnels under the fields next to the hospital. I gave up when I found myself standing on a god knows how old decomposing asbestos tile in the tunnels. yuk. Probably not got long left now...... Thanks alot Cane Hill.....
@obesehairydog Well you've still got the chapel, the water tower and admin. The wards and corridors and the laundry etc were not that exceptional in any way. High Royds was a better example which is why most of that has been preserved.
