  • i like how as the videos go on the views slowly get less numbers because people probably realize they can't play it

  • AWESOME! Without question..THE BEST VERSION!

May I ask what your setup is?

    Thanks for the great video!

  • damn! nice, im actually learning how to play it. its amazing what your fingers will do after learning a few parts of this song. \m/

  • Thanks for great video! I'm trying to learn Eruption, I'm at part 4 now. Eruption is much higher than my level, I mean I need more time to get the ability to play Eruption. I've studied this all day and my finger tips are fcked up because of bends hahahaha (im using 0.10 strings)

  • Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to go through Eruption for us. I have spent the last two weeks working on it, I've always wanted to learn the entire song and it's going to happen this year. You did an excellent job with this!

  • @zcaisse2876 change your strat to 2 volumes and one tone. One for the Humbucker and one for the two Singles. Then you can studder it like a LP too.

  • Eddie made some weird-ass note choices! I guess that's part of the genius.

  • I didnt know Ryan Reynolds could shred like this!!! O.o

  • thank you for posting all these vids. they have really helped me a lot.

  • It's a really kind thing to post this video. For example, lick library charge for a video that's no where near as authentic as yours. Thank you.

  • i love these vids, i was wondering what K pots your using or what setup of pots your using with your hss setup, i am converting my strat to hss and am completely lost in what i should do, i wanted to have a 500k for the humbucker and 250k for the single's, is their any way to do that. im running a standard 5 way switch with volume/tone/tone. any one who sees this comment, id be very thankful for your imput

  • I play with 11's because I like the fatter, more aggressive tone that I get. But the hammer-ons and fret tapping is killing me! Are 9's really a lot easier?

  • Everything from your amp settings ,choice of humbucker sharing your effects like the reverb, phaser and delay settings, stomp box and most of all you playing is perfect!!! I don't think anyone could play this better than you period! plus thank you for taking the time to teach and share this Pete!

  • This rocks dude, best version of eruption on YouTube, all the other ones is missing something, but this is the real deal, awesome dude.

  • This is fantastic. I used to play a "fake" version of Eruption back in the early 80's and everyone loved it. Your breakdown and lessons are giving me new life in my guit. One question Pete, do you happen to know what gauge strings Eddie uses or perhaps more specifically what do you use?

    Thanks. Dann

  • @mrdinsdale I think Eddie used .009 to .040? I used .009 to .042 to do this vid. I usually use 10's but it's harder to play eruption with 10's- the bends just after the 1st part wear me out and then it's harder to play the fast line that immediately follows...

  • i thank you for teaching me this whole song, your one of the few good teachers on youtube, again i thank you.

  • i've fully got down part 2, but this part i need to work on a bit, i just play an interpretatively cheaper version at the moment to substitute :P

  • dude you are the shit, this tutorial is so freaken helpful, thank you so much for making this video!!!!

  • Thank you , very helpful

  • Yea I agree. I think you nail this better than anybody I have ever heard besides Eddie himself. Very impressive.

  • I felt it move

  • BON SCOTT!

    (t-shirt)

  • yours is an ERECTION !!! nice playin....

  • my hand feels like its falling off and im only 5:30 in this video

  • @zeppelin25101980 for how long do you play?

  • muchas gracis por tus videos.. gracias a ti la he aprendido. ESTA GENIAL

  • Dude! Great video, it was helpfull

  • Awesome! Hopefully I master this within a year haha

  • I learned this by playing the vinyl record on the family stereo [ the one that looked like a piece of furniture] at 16 rpm. It was an octave lower. Talk about technology.

  • @daveasc

I, too, learned this by slowing down the vinyl down to 16 rpm in the early 80's. In fact, I worked on the whole album note-for-note by slowing it down. Yes, exactly one octave lower!! There is something about listening to Edward at that speed on vinyl. I was able to totally immerse myself in his tone, SWING, and feel this way. But this video nails it!!

  • Fantastic! Really great lesson.

  • Man this is the first attempt today at learning this so called Eruption my brain hurts but I'm getting it though slowly slowly. By the way thankyou from the Gold Coast Australia.

  • cool lesson tnx a lot

  • i came here just for that lick at 5:14. i love the whole solo but that particular lick is just godlike..

  • Awesome vid, Pete...great playing...as usual!

  • what is your bridge pickup????? Thanks> Great job by the way!!!!!!

  • my fingers hurt :(

  • what effect's pedal or amp do u have for your distortion?

  • @PegLeg1314 part 1

  • you're the man dude, very helpful series

  • Great stuff.

  • amazing..lots of people dont realize that this the HARDEST [part of eruption hands down..fantastic work my friend

  • what speed do you set the phase on

  • maybe its a stupid question but how do you keep the guitar in tune when you use the whammy bar? i always have that problem.

  • @slipknotmetalfan part 1

  • this guy by far has the best eruption lesson on youtube

  • almost a 100 k! :D

  • It sounds fucked up slow

  • Nice. In the real version, the part at 6:40 in ur vid. I've seen a bunch of different ways to play it, with different sequences and frets. N will never know for sure cus he never played it this way live, or at least he varied the hell out of it. I slowed it down and its still kind of tricky to tell. I've seen where it goes B-string-14-17-20, E-string-14-17-20. Other times I see it as him leaving out the 14th fret on the E in the sequence.

  • "sorry i'm like dyslexic"

Lol that came out of nowhere

    :D

I'm not making fun of your dyslexia just saying that was random as hell.

  • I can't freakin play it! 0_0

  • @moviemaker3000

Do it incredibly slowly at first.

    For a long time.

    Until you can play it.

  • @collin292 Thanks bro I will try that

  • lol im 13, ive been playing for a year and a bit and ive made it up to 5:51 of this video and done prt 2 AND ive mastered the fingertapping ( i couldnt wait)

  • What the hell is that noise? Is your amp broken? Oh wait, I've got the Vuvuzella button turned on.

  • @llBlackDogll i remember that button :D

  • I dont 7:04 is even in a scale Eddie maybe just screwed up

  • waiit a second!! do you play guitars for chris cornell??

  • waiit a second!! do you play guitars for chris cornell??

  • 5:42 is so hard to play, the rest i dont have a problem playing fast (before that) but i think its the bending then hiting the bottom string in fast sequence that gets me, ill need to practise that alot to hget it

  • i like tacos

  • @ nomadnick726 after the strings have been streched out enough times they stop streching so they can no longer go out of tune

  • awesome teacher...

  • @sinasl1 where do you live cuz it'd be cool to have you as a guitar teacher.

  • doesnt the guitar go out of tuning since the wammy isnt locked on to the tuning??

  • Thank you sinasl1 for such an in depth explanation. really easy to pick it up from your tutorial

  • You kick ass! amazing lesson, amazing player. I saw you last year with chris cornell at the myth in Minnesota.

  • songsterr . com best website for guitar help.

  • thanks for this vid, great teaching skills. ive been playing for about 8 years now and can play all kinds of 80's shred types of music(eg. arpeggios, long scale runs) perfectly fine, but when it comes to eddie and his tone personality it stops me in my tracks. The lines of Eruption in this video is hard to emulate, well let alone all of eddies songs fall into hard to emulate. its the character in the whammy and bends with the attack that you approach it at that is what is important to learn.

  • @sinasl1 its been a dream of mine to play eruption for quite some time now. On April 03 2010 at 10:03 AM this video helped me complete that dream. You're a perfect guitar teacher . I thank you. Sincerely, Gunwolf203.

  • I have trouble with the part where you slide up too the 20th fret on the 2nd string and play that with the 17th on the 1st string. My first finger on the 17th feels like it wants to quit or something while its bending up.

  • @yeah3652 sounds like you have independence issues. As in finger independence by the way; a good practice for that is the one where you pick 1 2 3 4 fret on 6th string with 1 2 3 4 finger respectfully and do that for every string (from low e to high). But you leave every finger where it is until it has to play, don't move it until its turn

  • just got the first part down ive been playing for a year and VH has always been there for me. a simple 17 yr old ..thanks for ur time = )

  • id say that eddies tone is slightly dryer but when he puts the phaze 90 in it still gives that sweet sounding smooth effect but there is no wet feel here- but fuck pete is close

  • what ive noticed about eruption is that when eddie turns the phazer on it doesnt give such a wet sound even up at the high segment straight after the only cover that ive heard with all the modifications (atomic punk) his sounded way way to fuzzy so yer he was also shit at it .

  • Holy shit, got the first part down pretty good, but this part is easily 10x harder than the first. Maybe I'll learn the third part next then add the second...

  • best lesson by far on youtube!

  • I always got the gist of this, but you buffed out the edges. Thanks!

  • Dude, awesome lesson, thanks, just wondering, when if you do, turn off the phaser? I could have missed it but it sounds like it's off when the tapping starts, but I could be dead wrong.

  • Perfect! Thank you very much

  • Great instruction Sinas

  • the tuning is e# , a , d , g , b , e# ???

  • @TiagoCarMir standard tuning, but everything down a half step. So- from low to high Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb

  • Hey dude, i'm fourteen and i've been playing a year and a half, my dad wants to know if i'm good knowing how to play this within that time?

  • @sinasl1 but damn, you sure can play

  • @TiagoCarMir no just tune every string down a half step down.

  • @TiagoCarMir Sharps are high and flats are low. b -low #-high. Think of it this way. they are like the in-between.between notes. E goes to E# then G. but you can use Gb as a bridged for E also. Every notes can be a flat and a sharp. but you have to know in which order then correspond. But its confusing because some tuners don't say (Note)b or (Note)# Sometimes it means that your gonna have to figure out if it corresponds with sharps or flats.
  • Great Job!!!!!

  • very good review over eruption im still working on that long part that starts with the rake but ill eventually get it :) how long did it take you to get it??

  • Comment removed

  • Great lessons, will keep working on it!!

  • You are a great teacher- thanks so much!

  • guarenteed that he makes his own solo's everyday or everytime he plays to something. I can, and he's loads better than I.

  • dude u should make ur own solos i think ur do excellent well done m8

  • Excellent

  • Great teacher. Cool guy as well

  • This really helps. Thanks

Also I like the color of your strat. Mines Burgundy Mist.

  • yeah its a awsome strat suhr in torquse blue

  • what strat doyou have

  • u think he called himself dislexic

  • Comment removed

  • Excellent video series,Excellent guitarist, and an Excellent teacher...thanks so much for these lessons sinasl1.Take care & keep Rockin Man.Gazza

  • Thank you so much man.. your amazing and great and u should be famous. Out of all the video's ive ever looked up for this... you helped me the most, i tried to learn this like 2 years ago, my skills weren't nearly as good as they are now but also i couldn't find anyone who took so much time to teach every single little detail, dude u should be famous!

  • Out of the 4 lessons, this (part 3) was the one to pay attention too, very nice, specific and extremely detailed, I got it nailed now. (from 2:20 onward)

  • is that a baja your playin if it is that is the same guitar i have

  • Great Video and great playing!

  • hows it that funny that he said " of my" ??? ur retarded

  • description: "Part 3 Of my "How To Play "Euption"" loloolol euption....just a funny typo...

  • oops.. I cannot type for shit.

  • dont worry ppl are gay.

  • hahahaha. that's cool that you wrote back to someone. this tutorial is the greatest tutorial of anything i've ever seen. if i could make one suggestion, it would be to get higher quality pickups, cause you can hear a lot of feedback and buzzing. just something to think about. peace home dog.

  • @sinasl1 who needs to type when you can play guitar like that :)

  • this guy is FANTASTIC!! the most comprehensive breakdown of this solo I've seen yet

  • EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT!!! I have never heard a solo picked apart like this! Amazing job!

  • i'm finally getting this, thanks and keep up the great work!

  • Continued: Do this instead: pick 14 string1, then on string 2, hammer-on 20, then pulloff to 17, then 14, then hammer-on 17, string 3. He does very similar 5 note runs in other songs, stretching with 3 fingers.

Thanks again for the great lesson series.

  • Incredibly well done, and excellent lesson. In the interest of insane perfectionism, my only suggestion is, at 8:47 instead of that 15th fret first string note, he more likely played fret 20 on 2nd string. So instead of sliding down to 14, then picking 15, you would still be in position of doing the wide diminished 3 finger stretch of the previous ascending hammer-ons, doing the following:

  • u rule.

  • waita second how long ago were u in australia and what state(s)

  • was there in 07, played sydney, melbourne, brisbane, adelaide, perth

  • i wonder if he can cook sausages..as well....hmmm!!!!

  • That's a shit hot t-shirt. Bon Scott rules!

  • got it in Australia! Bon was the man

  • if you put eruption in sony vegas and double the time you get eruption half the speed but at the same pitch. and when you listen to it slow in sony vegas you realize how accurate this guy is and you can hear eddie has either reverb or slapback echo or maybe both. anyway thanks for these lessons they're a great help.

  • also at the 14h17h20 the same thing happens, so message me or reply to me if you have an answer for me

  • I just had the same problem, it's all in the attack on the first pick, the harder you go at it the louder it will be, sounds to simple but you really have to hit er to get that last note.

  • thnx man

i thought it had something 2 do w/ my guitar, cuz my sustain on my 20th fret and above is horrible

i also thought it had to do w/ my amp and the noise reduction i was using

i'll work on wut u said

  • Same with me, I'm on a mexican strat barely getting by on it. I just had rail pickups put in it so it sounds like a beast now. It also seems the faster you play it the louder and longer it will ring, or sustain. Good luck because this is my favorite part of eruption but I just can't get it right up to speed.

  • I stand by what he said in this video

  • for some reason whenever i do the 16h18h20 part, my i can't get the 20 fret note out of my guitar, even w/ my amp on

can someone help me out here

  • This is the only part of the song that i just can't get.

  • dude, i never get tired of you playing in the begining of the video xD

    lesson was awsome!

  • You seem like a really nice guy. I'd take lessons from you.

  • What is on that shirt?I think I saw something like "IRON KAΛΠ" lol

  • actually it says bon scott - you may have heard of him ;-)

  • Aww,I think I will need 4-5 years of practice until I'll be able to play this song like you!!

  • But why do most people playing "eruption" and eddie as well tune the guitar on half step down???Anyone know?Is this to get harmonics more easily or not to get out of tune quickly or something?

  • Using 9 gauge strings and tuning down a half step makes really wide vibrato and big bends quite easy. Also, it sounds a bit more aggressive and it helps Dave in that he doesn't have to kill his voice trying to hit higher notes. Win/win for everyone in VH, ha ha.

  • Eruption is really more jazz than rock .

  • Well with a comment like yours you are most likely to be the idiot!

  • lol i already robbed him sorry

  • Comment removed

  • dude are you fuckin rich? ive watched all your eruption vids and look at all those guitars in the background? i want to rob you!!!!

  • Dude you are creep. why would you say such a thing, this guy doesn't have to do this. get job and buy your own stuff. beat it trash!

  • is he rich? lol thats funny.....HE PLAYS GUITAR FOR CHRIS CORNELL!!

  • Out of all the eruption lessons on youtube yours is the best thanks

  • just a tip EVH never moves his index and thumb when playing he mainly uses his wrist ,thats when hard becomes another level.

  • Thank you for this lesson, its been a massive help.

Also your voice sounds just like James Hetfield.

  • Comment removed

  • When thinking of it, Eddy is a natural gifted-practice-my-ass-off- genius!

Meaning, you get the work done by practicing a lot.....

Brillant video, here's the work of a well concentrated-patient musician.

    *****

  • He's right about the swing on the lick up at the 20th fret - it's probably the trickiest bit of the song

  • you have halped me very very much i have been playing for about a year when i decided "HEY LETS DO EDDIE!" so flipped out dads old albums found it and started tryin to learn it...

I failed at that and after an hour of surfing youtube for an AMZING vid on teACHing this i found yours thank you for your help you are amazin

  • thanks!!!

  • can you tell me wat the chords are did you say a g than d? for the first part?

  • Yup A G D

  • And with any cover, getting the feel/vibe is key. That's why some note perfect versions are still just "meh".

And that is why the vast majority of covers on YT stink. Be they Vai, VH, ACDC or whatever. And it is always clear if they guy playing is influenced by the artist or whether he is just attempting a popular solo.

  • When you hear "it's in the fingers" - this is what is meant. Attack, vibrato, the way notes are played. I sound like Vh as he is my biggest influence and I copped his style. This guy clearly does too.

There are countless renditions on YT. Some good. But even they aren't right because they lack the vibe and feel. Vai is a monster but he couldn't play Eruption as closely as this guy as his way of playing is so different to EVH.

  • this is really informative im almost finshed learning this

  • anyone know where to get the phrase trainer hes talkin about at 3:40

  • try "transcribe" software or "amazing slow downer"... do a google search.. both are real nice

  • ok thanks! that should really help with those tricky phrases i think. BTW you're an awesome teacher, I've been trying this solo out for a long time, and these videos have been a huge help.

  • dude don't listen to any of those stupid comments. You rock at the guitar. I'm glad you appreciate the rock and roll power!!!

Keep on rocking cause you rock!!!!!!

  • You need to make sure it's a rendition and parts are different than the original. You have a nice sound tho'.

  • the point of the lesson is to teach the solo note for note...... not to do a rendition. I find that transcribing things note for note is a bit of a lost art- musicians have gotten a bit lazy about it, i think... and even Ed Van Halen learned early Clapton licks dead on, note for note. He turned out ok! it helps to break you out of ruts and playing the same licks all the time, and to develop your technique... makes you see things differently. And, it develops your ear.

  • hey dude, i saw ur lesson, and u ROCK! ive only been playin guitar for a year and a month lol (that means Laugh Out Loud in case u dont no haha ^.^) my amp (Line6 spyder 3) has knobs that give me phase, destortion, reverb, and delay sound. wuld that b ok 4 this song? or do i need the pedals? if i need the pedals where can i get them? if its ok can u tell me the settings u have on ur pedals pplz? ty. dnt listen to any of those stupid comments ur AWESOME! pplz get back to me ASAP lol cya.

  • YEs you need the pedals, don't try to manage it all with the phaser effect, because I've realized this effect is just for fun on Line6's.You can buy pedals in any musical instrument store. If you need help tell me.Also,if you're from Europe and don't have any stores near your house go to the website thomann de and select your country.Cheers

  • Right on! I've been playing a "rendition" for years but wanted to learn the exact licks and I'm doing that thanx to your lessons. It's really cool that you're helping musicians everywhere with this stuff. thanx again

  • it's true. i remember having to cop solos of coltrane or anything for that matter and always feeling transformed. i've always wanted to have eruption under my belt..... so much contained in this one movement. here's simple question that i feel needs addressing and i think most players don't discuss because they think it's ridiculous.... but not! what guage of strings do you favor for this type of playing... remembering that you can loose ' meat ' on the first string if too lite....many thanks

  • lol i have no problem with the stretch at 7:35 i have huge hands
