the les paul and the prs are very similar, soundwise. The PRS also have the warm sound that the les paul has so its very hard to pick the best guitar. I have a les paul copy,an epiphone and I like the warm sound of it and I now for sure that the prs guitars are the second alternative to get the warm sound.
Both nice. I prefer the character oif the Gibby for what I like to play mostly which is bridge position. I thnk the PRS is a more versatile with the warmer Neck pickup though.
Gibson is a legend, great guitars, especially those older ones. Prs makes guitars that are very good, very how can I say...very accurate, precise, mixed from Les Pauls and Fenders I think. So, anyone should get one, that makes better tone for playing style.
I have Gibson Slash AFD and Tokai Love Rock from 1981... believe it or not - Tokai makes better sound anytime. My view on this.
I've always been head on Gibson, PRS makes a nice guitar, but it's apples and oranges. If you want a Gibson sound, buy a Gibson, likewise with a PRS... lol It comes down to a matter of preference, neither guitar "sounds better" it's a matter of which sounds better "to YOU". For example, your rendition of Song For Sonny Liston sounded better "to me" on the Les Paul, ...because that's what Knopfler played it on. The PRS sounds "to me" like your amp has a pillow in front of it. jmo
There's a reason why PRS has gone to great lengths to copy the design of a Gibson Les Paul. Notice I said: COPY! Having said that, I personally believe the LP trumps the PRS anyday. Gibson's inimitable sound is world renown and in a class all it's own!! I don't see PRS setting the standard for anything memorable in tone among those that have contributed to music's greatest efforts that have stood the test of time.
Sorry, but it's a no brainer for me... LES PAUL, all the way!!!
@patman0455 agreed! The pickups sound much meatier and a PRS feels much better with the ergonomic neck through design. I love Les Paul's; but for a better guitar for half the price, get a PRS anyday.
I have a 75 Les Paul, 88 JapStrat and a 99 PRS swamp ash special. The PRS is a whole 'nother animal than he others and is supposed to be in between - it's not though it is super cool. My 10# LP plays like butter and my JapStrat is better than AmStrats of the same vintage. A guitar tech I know had to get one after playing mine. If you like big necks my LP and PRS are there. I have big hands and that suits me fine.
I would probably buy a PRS guitar. The only thing that would put me off buying one is the way it looks. If the PRS looked exactly like a les paul I would definitely buy one.
Pretty different animals. The PRS has a longer scale, the neck pickup is in a different position than the Les Paul's neck, the neck joints are different (I an talking the Gibson tenon vs the PRS which is more akin to a dovetail) and one is a fixed bridge while the other is a set neck.
Rather than be a 'vs' this should just be a tone demo since the comparison is apples and oranges
So you have a PRS Custom 24, a Gibson Les Paul and a dr. z amp. It looks like you have skills but you don't hear that both your guitars are out of tune. No offense but spend your money on a better hearing instead of another way to expensive guitar. It is difficult for me, and probably others, to listen to the tone of the guitars in stead of the false notes...
For the shitty sound of the amp, the PRS sounds much clearer and has more depth. The les paul is thicker but gets muddy and sounds bland at some points. Get a way better amp, and both guitars will sound much different and create an entity of their own. It will prob be a tie between the two then.
I don't how you recorded them but both sound bad to my ears, sorry, especailly overdriven, but the best of the worse is the PRS, plus they're both out of tune!!
Thanks for this informative comparison. Great editing and recorded sound.
It would be difficult to choose one over the other, as I preferred the PRS on some, the Gibson for others. My "desert isle" electric would be a PRS, all things considered.
Great idea for the video and rather well done... but perhaps getting a pro player to do the playing would help a bit. It might help the viewer get an idea of where these guitars can go.
I guess its more a matter of taste rather than which one is better. Both are great guitars but how they fit on ones taste is then a personal thing. Its liek apples and oranges or mangoes or whatever...
The PRS sounded(to me) more like a bit on the hard side than the Gibson.I think I'ld like to have the PRS on chords or metal solos and the Gibson on rock and blues..but again, its my opinion, a matter of choice and taste..
PRS C/S 24 is much better than the Gibson Les Paul dont know why PRS just sounds like more touch than Gibson though PRS more expensive but I think I'd like PRS :D
That Les Paul sounds great, it's distinctive LP tone. I personally prefer the PRS for so many reasons. Tone wise has more of a full, thick creamy sound. It looks cooler. The neck is quicker. The entire guitar is much lighter. It's more versatile, you can switch the pickup settings from single coil to full humbucker and almost everything in between. And man does it sound good in the right hands. PRS hands down everytime.
Different windings in the pickups and magnets used + the capacitor and wiring (yes, different wiring to tone pots makes a difference when rolling off tone) is going to give both guitars different sounds.
How about you use the Gibson pickups in both guitars, that would be the best comparison, and as long as no-one changes any pedal settings I wager both guitars will sound the same (roughly - as the Gibson may be chambered)
So, not a fair comparison really, I thought the Gibson bright + PRS bassy
two totally differnt beasts..they both sound unique..One issue i have is that if you use the same tone settings you will get different sounds from the two guitars. One would have to adjust the tone controls on each axe to get them to sound as good as possible..
both great guitars, good job man on this review!!! imo...if u want vintage bright sound go for LP , if u want vintage/modern fat and more clean sound go for PRS..i like much more the prs guitar, playability and sound!!! its only my opinion...nice job again :)
I like the PRS much more. To me, the Les Paul sounded slightly nasally and a bit muddy on that first gain setting you had. The PRS had more depth and harmonic complexity while still retaining definition. Plus, it looks fantastic with better access to the higher frets. a PRS will be my next guitar if I don't give in and buy an Eastwood first.
Well done vid. Both beautiful guitars. Put a gun to my head, and I'd take the LP (if only someone would threaten my life with just such a proposition!). Seemed to me that the LP is a bit brighter and has cleaner trebs. By comparison, the PRS is a bit murky. Just my $0.02. Nice playing - love the bit of "Sonny Liston's Blues."
hey i have both too.. not the originals though but replicas..( cant afford the originals but someday i hope to buy them..) your PRS tone sound better any day!! I have a Ratpro guitar which is a replica of PRS guitar and GC which is a replica of Les Paul. Thanks for the post.. Keep Rocking !!!
There are the similarities in wood, pickup configuration(save for the coil-tap on the PRS) and tuner layout..otherwise, lots of differences. The 25" scale of the PRS vs. the 24 3/4" of the Gibson, the tremolo of the PRS vs. the T.O.M/stoptail of the LP....both are great guitars. The PRS can cover a lot of ground and has top-notch workmanship...the LP, well, ya gotta sort through several to find the ONE, but man, when you DO.....(continued)
@bowslap There are some sounds that you'll only find with a LP(be it with humbuckers or P-90's...or if you can get one, a '50's Custom with the P-90/A5 combo), just as the same for a Stratocaster or Telecaster. My only real complaint with PRS guitars are the rather "sharp" edge of the fretboard(as opposed to the "rolled" edges of a factory Fender neck)...feels uncomfortable to my hand. Really, though...hard to go wrong with either.
They both sound different. I like the sound of both. Just because you like one of them doesn't mean the other one is just horrible. Each is better for different things.
it doesnt have to be a "which is best" contest - i got both a Les Pauls and 3 PRS in my stock at the studio - and i like both guitars quite much.
the quality of craftmanship is higher on PRS than Gibson - but a good Les Paul is devine in itself, - so i think you should one of each.... I dont think the C22/24´s should be in direct compare with the LP - it should morely be an sc245 or alike.
The LP has more ring and pearly sound to it - the PRS bites harder and warms more -my honest opinion.
I have always found that PRS guitars are more versitile than Les Pauls. But Les Pauls have "that tone" than NO other guitar can match. Its all personal taste. I own a Les Paul Standard Traditional Pro, and wouldnt trade that guitar for any other, even a PRS. Pretty much once you pass the $2000 price range with guitars, no one guitar is "better" than another. It come down to playing style and preferance.
@AnonymousThe1337 I was the Guitar Tech at a Music store for several years. I put a lot of high end parts and electronics into mid to high end Epiphones, and they just never quite got there. It comes down to the quality of wood, and the finish. Gibson, and PRS, use premium woods that "breath". And a Nytro lacquer finish lets the wood resonate properly. Polyurethane finish guitars, (all Epiphones ) have a darker, muddier tone. Wood and finish, make the most difference.
@MrMjp58 That more crisper response youre hearing is actually a thinner sound from the LP. Both are great, I agree....but the PRS has a deeper and fuller tone, which is what mahogany does for a guitars tone
It would also help to know what Les Paul it is, because there are many different models, and they all sound different. Interesting comparison though. I have a LP Traditional. I would say that it certain instances I thought the PRS sounded better and in other instances I thought the LP sounded better. To be fair, the PRS should have been played without the coil tap engaged.
the prs sounds better clean, but the dudes right sounds like your high e string on both are slightly flat...if that happens a lot, try stretching the crap out of them, even tuning them a bit sharp and leaving them overnight like that, if that doesn't work, check your nut it might be catching the string and "hanging up" if that is the case use some liquid graphite on your nut and that should solve the problem, if you still have problems after those 2 solutions, you might just need a tuner..

DAMNIT the PRS was slightly out of tune on two different strings. How can you compare? The Gibson was only out of tune on 1 string lol. Seriously this blows my mind. $3k worth of guitars and you cant tune em man?
I think it was a little silly to use the coil tap when comparing to a LP. Showing the capability is fine but the title clearly says versus.... that being said this is apple and oranges. P/ups are TOTALLY different, construction methods despite both being set necks etc is very different as well. Ultimately in any gibson guitar has more mids which is y leads are meaty and chords are chunky. Next to an ibanez or prs chords and cleans wont sound as good. This is why we buy multiple guitars :)
I'm a Les Paul man myself.. I have two. Never owned a PRS so I guess Im no authority on them but I always thought they sounded "thin". Take that for what it's worth. As for the coil tapping feature.. I have a Les Paul Std. traditional pro it has push-pulls for both pickups.
@ColbyJMeyer lol not talking bout emgs, bare knuckle PAF style pups are where its at, i chucked some PG Blues in my epiphone and it sounds better than any stock Gibson I've heard
@Royart142 How is a tremolo, which kills sustain, and 24 frets = bigger scale = less sustain, pros for a guitar again? I bet you're one of the generation that admires people like Vai with their stupidly fast, incoherent and unmusical playstyle...
@ErebosNetherDarkness Dude I'm a Jazz player, I own a Les Paul, I have a PRS, I dont need a stupid kid to tell what is sustain and that shit, if you like les pauls its ok for me but dont blame others music or preferences that only makes you an asshole and a failure at life...
The PRS is a double cut whilst the LP is a single cut and the LP has a fixed bridge, thereby retaining more wood, so can't really compare. Yes the PRS may have the edge on build quality however, the LP exceeds on both tone and resale value. I'll take the LP and with the new classic customs, I'll take 2!
@5150VanAlien yes your right a good LP is a good way to go. But PRS singlecuts in high price range can give you a guitar that everyone will want from you. it will sound great guaranteed quality instrument. now im not saying that LP's are not quality instruments because each one has its personality. People need not to be picky when it comes to a 3000 dollar prs or LP because if you have your amp set right. you should have a brilliant tone with either guitar.
@ryandorrah PRS' are overpriced and whilst they bring quality, a good LP brings with it much more heritage and tone. Afterall, the PRS Single Cut was based off the LP design. An LP sings and sustains better. Don't agree with your point re: amp settings. With a good LP under you, even an OK amp will give you a respectable tone.
I am a huge PRS fan and yet to get my first but they look and sound great and i cant wait to get my hands on one in a month or so. but honestly you gotta give respect to both guitars.. gibson les pauls have been around since the dawn of rock and roll and will always have respect from people who really know a thing or two about music. but PRS really has something unique and special going on with the way they are making each one of them. ive played both and they are great guitars =)
on the bit you did on 1:29 to 2:20, did you use the same pickup position on both guitars? it sounded as if though you were using the neck pickup on the PRS and bridge pickup on the les paul. I just wanted to clarify. thanks
@sayocean69 I was using the middle pickup position on both guitars, but I had the coil tap engaged on the PRS, which is why it sounds a bit crisper. I had a hard time making up my mind on that clip because it's not a straight comparison, but in the end I figured it was worth pointing out that additional capability on the PRS.
@sgoodacre Hello My Friend: You Should have Taken A PRS Singletop, instead of this 24 frets PRS...It is Very Bassy, and your LesPaul is To Bright all the way down...it is very strange cause mine (A Gold Top) doesnt sound so bright!!! Maybe The Caps should be changed...I dont Know...By the Way,Nice Playin' Keep On Rocking Man!!! Take It Easy.
I just think the tone on the les paul sounds to shallow, the prs sounds amazing, i've always been a les paul man but think im gonna have to get me a 24 custom now :/
I like a lot this video :D

AnonymousThe1337 4 weeks ago
@AnonymousThe1337 I was the Guitar Tech at a Music store for several years. I put a lot of high end parts and electronics into mid to high end Epiphones, and they just never quite got there. It comes down to the quality of wood, and the finish. Gibson, and PRS, use premium woods that "breath". And a Nytro lacquer finish lets the wood resonate properly. Polyurethane finish guitars, (all Epiphones ) have a darker, muddier tone. Wood and finish, make the most difference.
StringSlinger26 4 weeks ago
@AnonymousThe1337 that is a very poorly thought out (and inaccurate) statement
MrLandlubba 4 weeks ago
@MrLandlubba You, sir have obviously never played an aged Tokai guitar... They used to be such a pain in the ass for Gibson ;)

@AnonymousThe1337
You can gold plate a KIA but it will never be a Lexus.
A Gibson is a Gibson and you can't touch it until you get one. I would go pre-weight relieved body years for tone.

Both sound very good. For me, the Les Paul has more character and and a crisper response.
MrMjp58 2 months ago
@MrMjp58 That more crisper response youre hearing is actually a thinner sound from the LP. Both are great, I agree....but the PRS has a deeper and fuller tone, which is what mahogany does for a guitars tone

That PRS is beautiful, anybody know what the finish is called?

You need a SNARK tuner.

I like the PRS the most, but it should have been a stop-tail bridge :P
SuperIthinknot 2 months ago
It would also help to know what Les Paul it is, because there are many different models, and they all sound different. Interesting comparison though. I have a LP Traditional. I would say that it certain instances I thought the PRS sounded better and in other instances I thought the LP sounded better. To be fair, the PRS should have been played without the coil tap engaged.

the gibson has more charecter then the prs, although the prs is brighter and twangy the les paul as usuall HAS MORE BALLS!!
(I sold my prs to get a fine les paul)
but after all it's just a personal taste!! ROCK ON!!

the prs sounds better clean, but the dudes right sounds like your high e string on both are slightly flat...if that happens a lot, try stretching the crap out of them, even tuning them a bit sharp and leaving them overnight like that, if that doesn't work, check your nut it might be catching the string and "hanging up" if that is the case use some liquid graphite on your nut and that should solve the problem, if you still have problems after those 2 solutions, you might just need a tuner..

For me it was close but i have to give the edge to the PRS it had a much clearer bottom end without too much muddiness.
Besides depending on the year of that LP, Gibson is now making them all with weight relieved and chambered bodies.
The PRS is still all solid wood, and that will always be better than non solid bodies.
damics1969 2 months ago
I never thought i'd say this but the PRS is way better sounding. But if it was drop D maybe the LP

I have a Les Paul Std. traditional pro it has push-pulls for both pickups.
nice guitars man

@ColbyJMeyer lol not talking bout emgs, bare knuckle PAF style pups are where its at, i chucked some PG Blues in my epiphone and it sounds better than any stock Gibson I've heard

Royart142 2 months ago 15
@Royart142 How is a tremolo, which kills sustain, and 24 frets = bigger scale = less sustain, pros for a guitar again? I bet you're one of the generation that admires people like Vai with their stupidly fast, incoherent and unmusical playstyle...
ErebosNetherDarkness 2 months ago
@ErebosNetherDarkness dont hate on steve vai he dosnt even use prs. and may I remind you santana uses prs
Mikerockgod3 2 months ago
@ErebosNetherDarkness Dude I'm a Jazz player, I own a Les Paul, I have a PRS, I dont need a stupid kid to tell what is sustain and that shit, if you like les pauls its ok for me but dont blame others music or preferences that only makes you an asshole and a failure at life...
Royart142 2 months ago
The PRS is a double cut whilst the LP is a single cut and the LP has a fixed bridge, thereby retaining more wood, so can't really compare. Yes the PRS may have the edge on build quality however, the LP exceeds on both tone and resale value. I'll take the LP and with the new classic customs, I'll take 2!
5150VanAlien 2 months ago
@5150VanAlien yes your right a good LP is a good way to go. But PRS singlecuts in high price range can give you a guitar that everyone will want from you. it will sound great guaranteed quality instrument. now im not saying that LP's are not quality instruments because each one has its personality. People need not to be picky when it comes to a 3000 dollar prs or LP because if you have your amp set right. you should have a brilliant tone with either guitar.
ryandorrah 2 months ago
@ryandorrah PRS' are overpriced and whilst they bring quality, a good LP brings with it much more heritage and tone. Afterall, the PRS Single Cut was based off the LP design. An LP sings and sustains better. Don't agree with your point re: amp settings. With a good LP under you, even an OK amp will give you a respectable tone.

les paul has a full sound prs is a pretty sg

RedTV8888 2 months ago
Anything involving the neck pickup, the Les Paul sounded better to me. Any time the bridge pickup was used alone, I preferred the PRS.

PRS is so much better. If I had both of these, I guess I'd rarely pick up the Les Paul at all.
otofotobingoloto 3 months ago
I am a huge PRS fan and yet to get my first but they look and sound great and i cant wait to get my hands on one in a month or so. but honestly you gotta give respect to both guitars.. gibson les pauls have been around since the dawn of rock and roll and will always have respect from people who really know a thing or two about music. but PRS really has something unique and special going on with the way they are making each one of them. ive played both and they are great guitars =)

Good review, Simon. Neither is better, just a bit different.
Budyguy222222 3 months ago
on the bit you did on 1:29 to 2:20, did you use the same pickup position on both guitars? it sounded as if though you were using the neck pickup on the PRS and bridge pickup on the les paul. I just wanted to clarify. thanks
sayocean69 3 months ago
@sayocean69 I was using the middle pickup position on both guitars, but I had the coil tap engaged on the PRS, which is why it sounds a bit crisper. I had a hard time making up my mind on that clip because it's not a straight comparison, but in the end I figured it was worth pointing out that additional capability on the PRS.
sgoodacre 3 months ago
@sgoodacre Hello My Friend: You Should have Taken A PRS Singletop, instead of this 24 frets PRS...It is Very Bassy, and your LesPaul is To Bright all the way down...it is very strange cause mine (A Gold Top) doesnt sound so bright!!! Maybe The Caps should be changed...I dont Know...By the Way,Nice Playin' Keep On Rocking Man!!! Take It Easy.
