and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty will I endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my care.

To the hospital administrator rule number 2: mechanical ventilators has different maker's name and model. Each of these device has a different instructions on how to use it! So it is the management's responsibility to orient and train the staff that they are hiring!!! you are responsible on what your subordinates action. In Latin respondiat superior!!!
To the nurse: rule number 1 do not act as if you know everything. If you are not sure on what you are doing then ask! It is better not to perform the task if you are unsure on what you are doing.
This life saving machine or intensive equipment must not be easily turn off in just one click of simple switch. This device should equip with switch tha has a key that should handle by the assigned physician... this can happen to anybody that entering the room. Don't blame the nurse--- blame the maker of the device.
@New777Moon -I am an RRT with 20 years experience in Critical care and also as a clinical Instructor. The On/Off button is clearly marked and labeled. If the nurse didnt know what she was doing she should not have touched the ventilator. She is 100% responsible for what she did...... It is not only impractical but unnecessary for a physician to have a "key" to the vent. RRTs are the best trained by far on ventilator management.
My opinion is-- before getting a job which needs critical care, we should always be honest to tell that we have limited knowledge and skills with this equipment. we deal with humans, lives of people...one mistake may lead to more complication, and even death.i am an ICU nurse and it entails a lot of training to be in critical care nursing.
damn im incompetent but not to that level to be put in the care of someone or anyone for that matter not even myself
