  • His voice, passion, and humility moves me unlike anyone else. I cannot express my feelings in entirety how I FEEL when I hear Daves voice...........Magical. Inspiring, moving, erotic (in my world)........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Just hold my hand while I come...to a decision on it.

    Awesome, Dave!

  • Saxa! classic, so adorkable he did that

  • love this guy, so talented yet so down-to-earth

  • @dinster70 all the best ones are

  • his voice went down the drain ??? invest in some Qtips...Dave sounds fantastic acoustically....educate yourself..

  • left handed people ftw

  • Wow, Daves voice just went went went.....down the drain. Sad. To me anyway.

  • Hi Dave, Rode the train from Birmingham to school in Coventry listening to this song and it still brings a little something to my eye this day.. Thanks. Carl R. H.

  • such a great tune...one of my faves from this era! i always wished i could sing like that...

  • One of the best HEHE

  • sweet more come to il

  • Holy shit- his voice has gotten even better- One of the ten best songs ever, I still like the original version, the band got everything just right on the first shot- such fading into minor backupchords, (i think, i've never been able to adequately describe it)

come to Chicago Dave, i'll buy your tickets!!!

  • dave was a god.....he still is......

  • Catchiest song about fellatio ever!

  • One of the most moving songs ever written- Keep it real!

  • great to hear and really listen again , brings back good times running in our rude boy and OSKs (o skool skins) clubs in London as well as germany again in the mid 90s...

also great to see another lefty play all fucked up and backwards.....

but now i have my lefty ovation,,,

hope to see dave again someday here in the states....jump the muddy pond again Dave..

  • Ive had a go at this riff in the tuning that Dave plays but my guitar is not upside down like his so cant quite get the same feel...check it out at baldyman123 channel

  • Wow, I've never seen anyone play a guitar upside down before! :P

  • Just adore this, absolutely and unconditionaly, if I could spell big words!!!!!!!

  • what a unique voice

  • I love Dave Wakeling! I have seen him in my neighboring town of Ventura and Santa Barbara on occasion. The English Beat was one of the greatest bands of all time. With mighty credit due to Dave and Ranking Roger.

  • what a fantastic song. I learned about it after hearing Pearl Jam through some of the lyrics in at the end of Betterman. This is so good

  • What's so great about Dave is his humility about helping Pete Townshend and Dave Gilmoure to perfect their version of "Save it for Later" and how he sat as a song writer and took Pete's Grandfatherly advice. I epsecially think he was very humble when he compared going from a "Cricket Bat" with strings to a real guitar. The Beat's version is impecable and when Pete does the version, he ALWAYS credits THE BEAT ! Now,in my opinion, that's true mutual respect !

  • I love Dave! By far the nicest guy you will ever meet on the road. And most talented!

  • excellent. absolutely excellent. Thank you!

  • Coolest dude ever, period.

  • Superb! Thank you.

  • Brilliant version

  • After all these years it is great to Dave Wakeling resembling so much of his former self ;-).

  • love this song..love it beatie(lee)..

  • Absolutely great!!Thanks for posting!

  • Awesome tune! Luv It! Thanks!

  • how many people can play an up side down guitar?

  • 2,567,421 to be precise

  • @nevertrustabunny how can you be precise

  • Paul McCartney did that.

  • ok two so far..lol..mr mcartney's a legend two

  • @sard37 You realize that all he did was restring it so he could play it left handed right?

  • @Kroush7

uses different tuning on the guitar also....

    D A D A A D tuning......

  • @skidbootify dang string poping time !!!!

  • @sard37

That would be me and what about 8% fo the pop....leftys are just fucked up ...but once we get real jobs we can afford the extra lefty tax that is tossd atop the guitar price of 300 to 2200 dollars ....and get a really nice guitar with the cutout and strings in the proper positions and then learn how to play all over again....

here is the big beni of being lefty NO ONE can play your guitar so they keep their nasty dickbeaters on your wood

  • @sard37 he's left-handed....

  • @sard37 he's left-handed....

The guitar was strung upside-down, same as hendrix.

  • @forcedRcon thanks bud didnt know that, stands to reason i guess lol

  • Just wanted to say how lucky a lot of you are. Much of the radio we knew in the Albany area was crappy album rock groups. The Van Halen/Hagar arguments were the extent of our knowledge. The Clash was practically the only modern rock group that crossed over to AOR. We never had anything like LIR/DRE until the mid/late 80s.

  • Albany, NY? We had Q104 in the late 70s -early 80s till they flaked, wasn't there some other station for a while? 106 on the dial?

  • 106 and 104 were more mainstream. The first taste we got of modern rock outside of college radio was WEQX: 102.7

Q104 is now hard rock, while PYX106 is classic rock (dead people).

  • You're right 104 was great for a while, I first heard the Sex Pistol, Black Flag, Elvis Costello, The Talking Heads, etc...

It was a great station for a while and always introduced new music. Who could forget the "Hump Day Unusual Moment" with Lynn What'shisname?.....

  • happy b-day Dave

  • I usually have this song on repeat on my ipod. I was a "rude girl" back in the 80s in my native England and played their LPs until the grooves wore out. Now in my late 30s, I'll be seeing them live for the first time in NYC in Feb '09. Can't wait. Is Rankin' Roger still with 'em?

  • Im so jealous!! I too in the 80's was a bit of a rudeboy, now in my late 30's it's reel boss to see people of my generation are still doin the damn thang. Thanks for the post 'bunny.

  • I heard that shuddrbugg. He still sounds good too.

  • I actually was a "rude girl" through the initial 2Tone era, was the best time of my young years, Terry Hall of Specials fame was always my fave, closely followed by old Dave.

Was fortunate to see the 2Tone tour-- The Specials, Selector, Madness, The Beat, bad manners and the Body Snatchers before they went their seperate ways, good times, DAM GOOD times

  • Great times, I only got to see the specials live when ghost town was number one.

They are all coming back though...lol

  • I remember one night in the late '90's this club I used to go, Live Bait, in the LBC, would from time to time have live bands playing. Well one particular night I was totally toasted but the music that was playing, I recognized the voice and the music. I turned around from dancing to actually pay attention. There was Dave standing about 5 feet away playing away.

    Fucking awesome.

  • saw the english beat last week

    all incredible

    a time warp

    a blast

    thanx utube

  • Mulder I WANT TO BELIEVE

  • beautiful. so great to see Dave Wakeling.

  • sweeettttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry missed the 3 there...nearly sure it was 1983...anybody else attend that festival?

  • Dave still ROCKS..........

  • Just saw The Beat on Sunday. AWESOME. Couldn't wipe the smile off my face or stop my feet from moving. Superb show.

  • Only live gig I ever saw was The Beat in Lisdoonvarna festival, west of Ireland in 198...I think...

Still one of the most memorable gigs EVER!

    Rock on Dave! :)

  • I love Dave Wakeling. I saw him in Toronto at the Masonic Temple; around 1985 or so...the band casually walked into the building by the back door and didn't mind meeting their fans. I'm still a fan...I love you Dave! Brings back memories....

  • I just saw Dave live on 8-2-08, they played this song and it was great!

  • who are these losers leaving comments.dave is the talent and is dam good.

  • Awesome! What a terrific singer! He must have sung this FABULOUS song at least 10,000 times and he really gives it his all!

  • Dave Wakeling is SO cool. He lives here in Ventura County, California. Very nice person.

  • Brum's finest - love the Saxa prompt...

  • I would love to have a copy of this version.

  • Such a great song and such a fantastic voice

  • No words!!!

    Just "AWESOME"!!!

  • Ranking rouger better

  • Roger was the toaster, Dave the singer they were great together but there's no one like Dave Wakeling.

  • Naaa Roger was better

  • Did Roger write this? No, it was Dave, did Pete Townsend go to Roger when he wanted to record this? No he went to Dave. Who's guitar is in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? Rogers? No, Dave's :)

  • I whent to see THE BEAT as RANKIN ROGER as lead vocal`s and it sounded like they did back in the 80s.Seen some DAVE WAKELING`S stuff it sounds nothing like what it used to

  • Since when has Roger been the lead vocal? He's the toaster, does he sing all of Dave's parts when they play as The Beat? I've seen The English Beat three or four times in the last year and a half and they sound just like they did when I first saw them in 1983.

  • Roger sings with his son in the band and roger never bean lead vocals but he should of bean because he`s really good and he fill strongley about the words he sing aswell

  • That's cool, I'd love to see them some day. They are both great and I wish they were back together. But hey, at least it gives twice as many people the chance to see two great performers sing great songs.

  • Are u from the U.S mate

  • Yes, I see Dave regularly in San Diego @ House of Blues and The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. I even sang on stage with them for a song when my friend owned a pub called The Pour House many years ago.

  • Ya Dave fucked off to U.S when the THE BEAT splited up Well we`ve got the Origanall drum from the band LOL

  • Roger is singing all of the songs that Dave himself wrote, his band is more like a cover version than anything else

  • Well it started in England first don`t know why he pissed off to u.s and he also fuck with the vocals witch i don`t like

  • Roger is singing all of the songs that Dave himself wrote, his band is more like a cover version than anything else

  • Brilliant, mate. Brilliant!

  • I'm vibin to this

  • HOLY FUCKNESS MY LAST NAME IS WAKELING, HOFY SHITNESS. cool

  • Cool, killer version, I met him and Saxa back in 1991.

    Nice one.

  • He's left handed and playing a right handed guitar, he's got the strings on backwards and the guitar flipped upside down, notice the pick guard, I think its artistic

  • He's right-handed! Apparently copied Paul MacCartney as a kid and stuck with it.

He actually plays upside down, the strings have not been reversed! A genius of inconvenience!

  • sounds great...looks great...feels great.

a friend is going to the Malibu show on New Year's and I am green with envy....one of the all time great bands and Dave hasn't lost a beat. ; )

  • oh wait...

    it's

050000 then 057070 then 050000 for the first part

  • I love how he mouth-improvs the sax...

    Cute.

  • Dave is great, got to sit in on an interview in San Diego last month and he was very funny, gracious and sounded great, even let my German friend and I sing along. Dave is a San Diego favorite and he plays at the local "Belly-UP" Tavern often.

  • Dave is one of the very few artists I can think of who sounds every bit as good live as in studio! Also, is one of the few I've seen(and I've seen him perform MANY times over the years)who gives consistently GREAT performances!

  • Can anybody post a tab that Dave's playing?

  • His guitar has been tuned DADAAD.

    Here are the chords:

    050000 then 057000 then 050000

    002000 then 002400 then 002000

    brief pause

    555555 then 000000

    basically it's D-A-G

He is playing his guitar upside down! So keep that in

    mind while you watch.

  • Hey, great stuff, thanks for posting!

  • Save It Fellator !!!!

  • ha ha. just hold my hand while i cum

  • Just to qualify things,

On the Special Beat Service album inlay printed Lyrics "Save It Fellator" is printed

Its how it sounds phonetically at points on the song.

  • Maybe my favorite song of the Beat

  • i think this is the second chord that nobody can figure out. (in dadaad tuning)

    -0-

    -4-

    -0-

    -7-

    -0-

  • Why did this guy leave The Beat anyway?

Ranking Roger and son are still performing.

What's up with this International Beat and English Beat? Anyone knows?

  • The Beat's Third album Special Beat Service was very popular in the States and not so popular in the UK Dave obviously likes living and touring in America.Rankin Roger tours the UK with The Beat.Everynow and again they hook up together

to do a show.I would love to see the entire original line-up with Andy Cox and David Steele who went on

to form the Fine Young Canibals.

  • Yeah, that would be great. I would just like to see Rogers and Weakling perform together again.

    It's still very confusing...

English Beat, International Beat, Special Beat and I'm gonna see Rankin'Roger & Son (Rankin'Junior) perform live as The NEW Beat in Amsterdam on oct. 11

  • I saw The Beat Rankin Roger and Rankin Roger JR a few years ago with a whole load of skinheads in Camden Underworld It was a good laugh actually !

  • I can't see what he's playing... :(

  • play by ear foooooooooooooooo

  • shut it.

  • Search for the first video of this interview titled:

dave wakeling tunes his twanger to dadaad

  • i saved it! favorites

  • Don't runaway and let me down... brilliant

  • bloody marvelous !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Somehow unplugged never did it for me. Great song in the 80s when it was synthed up.

  • no synths in the original either.

  • Great song!! Very mellow and simple in this acoustic set.

  • briliant have always loved this song, to see it raw like this is just a joy

  • search

    watch?v=xTWChIJxOiY

  • "What can you do? Join Greenpeace." - Brilliant!

  • Nice to see someone other than myself who plays the guitar the way I do...right handed strung instrument playing it left handed.

You really do produde a cool, unique sound.

  • Awesome, and timeless!

  • you know you made a cool song when pete townsend covers it

  • beautiful voice beautiful face (still) beautiful lyrics beautifully put beautiful soul thanks dave - brought back memories of sydney (!) in the 80's for me

  • Does this guy ever age??? He looks as good as in 1979! Great clip. More more more...

  • Its the Yoga! And the love of life

  • I'm not sure, but I think that his guitar is not strung for a lefty. It's still strung for a right handed player. You can see a close up on a clip of an acoustic performance of "Mirror In The Bathroom" from 1996 here on youtube. I think that is just the way he learned how to play.

  • on second thought- I think he keeps as much droning as possible. goes from 7th to 5th fret on the b string, plays the A with the major 3rd on top (4th fret on A) and an E (second fret on D string)before barring on the 5th fret.

  • great vid- looks like he starts with open D and slides to the 7th fret and back to fifth on the 2 droning As. Then slides up to the Es on the 2 highest D strings (4 and 6). Finishes with a bar at the 5th for a G.

  • I think the chords are D A and G with the guitar tuned as described above.God knows what the shapes are though.

  • Cool ! I try playing this song on open strings (Standard Tuned Acoustic).I play D , A and G. Is this correct or do the strings need to be re-tuned ? Thanks

  • tuning is d-a-d-a-a-d

  • Is this from the top E strings? What are the chords if there are any specifically?

  • Great to see the guy who wrote the tune playing it acoustic, one love Dave x Tony
