His voice, passion, and humility moves me unlike anyone else. I cannot express my feelings in entirety how I FEEL when I hear Daves voice...........Magical. Inspiring, moving, erotic (in my world)........mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Hi Dave, Rode the train from Birmingham to school in Coventry listening to this song and it still brings a little something to my eye this day.. Thanks. Carl R. H.
Holy shit- his voice has gotten even better- One of the ten best songs ever, I still like the original version, the band got everything just right on the first shot- such fading into minor backupchords, (i think, i've never been able to adequately describe it)
great to hear and really listen again , brings back good times running in our rude boy and OSKs (o skool skins) clubs in London as well as germany again in the mid 90s...
also great to see another lefty play all fucked up and backwards.....
but now i have my lefty ovation,,,
hope to see dave again someday here in the states....jump the muddy pond again Dave..
Ive had a go at this riff in the tuning that Dave plays but my guitar is not upside down like his so cant quite get the same feel...check it out at baldyman123 channel
I love Dave Wakeling! I have seen him in my neighboring town of Ventura and Santa Barbara on occasion. The English Beat was one of the greatest bands of all time. With mighty credit due to Dave and Ranking Roger.
What's so great about Dave is his humility about helping Pete Townshend and Dave Gilmoure to perfect their version of "Save it for Later" and how he sat as a song writer and took Pete's Grandfatherly advice. I epsecially think he was very humble when he compared going from a "Cricket Bat" with strings to a real guitar. The Beat's version is impecable and when Pete does the version, he ALWAYS credits THE BEAT ! Now,in my opinion, that's true mutual respect !
That would be me and what about 8% fo the pop....leftys are just fucked up ...but once we get real jobs we can afford the extra lefty tax that is tossd atop the guitar price of 300 to 2200 dollars ....and get a really nice guitar with the cutout and strings in the proper positions and then learn how to play all over again....
here is the big beni of being lefty NO ONE can play your guitar so they keep their nasty dickbeaters on your wood
Just wanted to say how lucky a lot of you are. Much of the radio we knew in the Albany area was crappy album rock groups. The Van Halen/Hagar arguments were the extent of our knowledge. The Clash was practically the only modern rock group that crossed over to AOR. We never had anything like LIR/DRE until the mid/late 80s.
I usually have this song on repeat on my ipod. I was a "rude girl" back in the 80s in my native England and played their LPs until the grooves wore out. Now in my late 30s, I'll be seeing them live for the first time in NYC in Feb '09. Can't wait. Is Rankin' Roger still with 'em?
Im so jealous!! I too in the 80's was a bit of a rudeboy, now in my late 30's it's reel boss to see people of my generation are still doin the damn thang. Thanks for the post 'bunny.
I actually was a "rude girl" through the initial 2Tone era, was the best time of my young years, Terry Hall of Specials fame was always my fave, closely followed by old Dave.
Was fortunate to see the 2Tone tour-- The Specials, Selector, Madness, The Beat, bad manners and the Body Snatchers before they went their seperate ways, good times, DAM GOOD times
I remember one night in the late '90's this club I used to go, Live Bait, in the LBC, would from time to time have live bands playing. Well one particular night I was totally toasted but the music that was playing, I recognized the voice and the music. I turned around from dancing to actually pay attention. There was Dave standing about 5 feet away playing away.
I love Dave Wakeling. I saw him in Toronto at the Masonic Temple; around 1985 or so...the band casually walked into the building by the back door and didn't mind meeting their fans. I'm still a fan...I love you Dave! Brings back memories....
Did Roger write this? No, it was Dave, did Pete Townsend go to Roger when he wanted to record this? No he went to Dave. Who's guitar is in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame? Rogers? No, Dave's :)
I whent to see THE BEAT as RANKIN ROGER as lead vocal`s and it sounded like they did back in the 80s.Seen some DAVE WAKELING`S stuff it sounds nothing like what it used to
Since when has Roger been the lead vocal? He's the toaster, does he sing all of Dave's parts when they play as The Beat? I've seen The English Beat three or four times in the last year and a half and they sound just like they did when I first saw them in 1983.
Roger sings with his son in the band and roger never bean lead vocals but he should of bean because he`s really good and he fill strongley about the words he sing aswell
That's cool, I'd love to see them some day. They are both great and I wish they were back together. But hey, at least it gives twice as many people the chance to see two great performers sing great songs.
Yes, I see Dave regularly in San Diego @ House of Blues and The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. I even sang on stage with them for a song when my friend owned a pub called The Pour House many years ago.
He's left handed and playing a right handed guitar, he's got the strings on backwards and the guitar flipped upside down, notice the pick guard, I think its artistic
Dave is great, got to sit in on an interview in San Diego last month and he was very funny, gracious and sounded great, even let my German friend and I sing along. Dave is a San Diego favorite and he plays at the local "Belly-UP" Tavern often.
Dave is one of the very few artists I can think of who sounds every bit as good live as in studio! Also, is one of the few I've seen(and I've seen him perform MANY times over the years)who gives consistently GREAT performances!
The Beat's Third album Special Beat Service was very popular in the States and not so popular in the UK Dave obviously likes living and touring in America.Rankin Roger tours the UK with The Beat.Everynow and again they hook up together
to do a show.I would love to see the entire original line-up with Andy Cox and David Steele who went on
Yeah, that would be great. I would just like to see Rogers and Weakling perform together again.
It's still very confusing...
English Beat, International Beat, Special Beat and I'm gonna see Rankin'Roger & Son (Rankin'Junior) perform live as The NEW Beat in Amsterdam on oct. 11

great vid- looks like he starts with open D and slides to the 7th fret and back to fifth on the 2 droning As. Then slides up to the Es on the 2 highest D strings (4 and 6). Finishes with a bar at the 5th for a G.
Cool ! I try playing this song on open strings (Standard Tuned Acoustic).I play D , A and G. Is this correct or do the strings need to be re-tuned ? Thanks

Albany, NY? We had Q104 in the late 70s -early 80s till they flaked, wasn't there some other station for a while? 106 on the dial?
RAF71chingachgook 2 years ago
106 and 104 were more mainstream. The first taste we got of modern rock outside of college radio was WEQX: 102.7
Q104 is now hard rock, while PYX106 is classic rock (dead people).
mezzofondo 2 years ago
You're right 104 was great for a while, I first heard the Sex Pistol, Black Flag, Elvis Costello, The Talking Heads, etc...
It was a great station for a while and always introduced new music. Who could forget the "Hump Day Unusual Moment" with Lynn What'shisname?.....
